I remember watching the 1985 Shug Avery and being taken in by her beauty and attitude. Then I saw this, and I swear I was speechless. She brought a whole new light on Shug Avery, and OMG that entrance is the best!!! They stuck pretty close to Shugs original dress, but this took it a step further and... wow. I caught myself singing this all day today. Red is a color that commands respect and attention here. OH and to see her walk right past Mister and go right up to Celie was the best end to this scene!!!

Shug Avery showed out in this wonderful reimagined Color Purple Musical!!!! Thank you to the entire cast👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Fantasia par excellence made me cry a few times during her performances, Danielle, such a beautiful voice...ladies and gentlemen hats 🎩 off and a standing ovation!
IMO Taraji was the STAR of this film. Danielle is getting all the buzz because of Broadway but Shug has A LOT of juicy screen time and lots of songs. And Taraji DELIVERS. Blew me away… missed her when she wasn’t on screen. She should be in the Oscar conversation for sure.
