    This is such a perfect movie moment. After years of utter neglect and abuse, Celie gets the most beautiful song sung to her and she finally feels like she exists! Wow. Powerful moment

    This scene made me tear up. Shoutouts to Shug for putting some respect on Celie’s name. This was the most love Celie has gotten since Nettie left years ago. Shoutouts to Sofia as well. She acknowledges Celie’s presence and she was the admiration Celie needed to get the guts to read Mister for filth.

    Just watched this film for the first time ever yesterday, and I was so taken aback by how beautiful it was. The women just... glowed. They shined. It made me feel so many things, and it gave me such an empowering perspective on African-American women. So strong. So beautiful. I wish my culture appreciated our women in general, but colorism and sexism still exists in my country. I am trying to just absorb the power African-American women went and continues to go through. Same here I was 7 and I even knew the meanings and felt them in my soul as a black female. It was the 80’s. We took my grandma to the movies to see it for her birthday. About 10-15 of us. One of the main memories I have of my grandma. coming from the deep south even a child could feel this in their soul especially a black child. That oppressive spirit is passed down unfortunately. The 80’s was a unique period just a few decades since civil rights but a new found freedom. The grandmas and pawpaws were still worn down from the past and we got to see it. We are in our 40’s now. So when they try to tell me anything about get over it. I just 😒and call em a 🤡

      It would seem so Daniel.
      Although 'Out of Africa' was a wonderful movie and did very well at the academy awards that year.... 'The Color Purple' had really tough competition.
      But I have always maintained the film should have received the recognition it deserved.
      My only criticism was the watering down of the love affair between Miss Celie and Shug ..its was far more intimate in the book..
      Again..Hollywood shying away from something they considered too controversial for the majority of cinema goers back in the 1980s.

    • @MrNaturalhigh72
      @MrNaturalhigh72 6 лет назад +29

      +Darren--many people don't even realize the relationship between Shug and Miss Celie. Kudos to you and anybody else who actually read the book! Although the movie was beyond excellent, it did shy away from certain subject matter simply because it made mainstream America uncomfortable at that time. The Broadway version currently playing does not shy away from the relationship between the two women. For some who haven't read the book or picked up on clues in the movie it came as a bit of a shock. One woman behind me even gasped and got up and left during the performance I saw last night. SMH at such closed minded people.

      @@aces985 no they're not. I think when Shug was calling Celie "sister" and serenading to her, she was basically calling Celie her friend and telling her she's worthy of being noticed and being strong. In the book, they actually become lovers. The filmmakers didn't include that part of the story in the movie since they were already "pushing boundaries" as it is. Such a shame, since it adds so much more to the story. After this scene it's implied that something happened between Shug & Celie, as Celie says herself, "Shug like honey, and now I's just like a bee. I's follow her everywhere. Want to go where she go." Shug (besides Nettie) has been the only person to show her kindness and love.

    And it also shows you how much Mister was fixated on making her miserable and low because the look of disgust on his face in this beautiful moment shows what kind of person he is.

      @@devvywevvy222 I haven’t seen the new one. Once I saw the first few tidbits of the new one, I was shocked to see the cast. Shug really makes the movie what it is. Everyone is drawn to her like bees to honey. She’s the life of the party. I’m not a casting director, but the original Shug, Margaret Avery, was perfect for the part. When she was in character, she walked and talked like a woman of the night who sang the blues and drank her heart away.
      You really have to find the character and stay in character to make the movie work.

    So uplifting. That's true sisterhood keeping our eyes on each other and making sure we are each doing alright. Wish I felt more of that in this busy isolated world of comparison, judgement and disconnection. Used to spend ages in the bathrooms of bars and nightclubs drunkenly encouraging, pep talking and complimenting other gals to give them a boost to their esteem. Hilarious, but I always wanted my 'sisters' to feel good and enjoy themselves along with me.
