It's not just the amazing vocal. It's the whole damn performance. The woman is raw, unfiltered, mesmerising, unmatched!! This kind of performance doesn't exist anymore. Incredible!!
I saw her live, she was a kick in the pants! She was outrageously funny and sassy. It was one of the most beautiful moments in my life with my late husband , his late best friend and one of my late best friends. I'm the only one still here, 6 feet above ground, to carry the memory for us 🙏 .
I’m here in 2024! I’m totally obsessed with this performance. This is ART! From the sweat, her makeup never budging, her overall Jean dress, HER RAW VOCALS 😮, the band, HER EMOTIONS! Can’t get enough 🙌🏾
Its' now 2024 and I'm 78yrs old and when I feel hurt, sad, and alone, I play this song. When your children treat you like your not important and you never did any thing for them, it HURTS. I'm hurting so deep down inside, tears are rolling down my face.as I listen to this song. This pass year so many things have happen in my life, but I must say, AS LONG AS i AM ABOVE THE DIRT, GOD IS NOT FINISH WITH ME. He still has work for me to do and maybe one day the ones I LOVE will see it. That's why I continue to SEW, CROCHET, GARDEN, AND HELP OTHERS WHEN I CAN. REMEMBER TO BE KIND TO OTHERS.
How many times must Etta have performed this song and yet the emotion that she displays while singing you'd think she had only just seen him with that other girl 2 mins ago.
The pain she had to relive her heartache. She didnt have to, but she went through this for the love of her art. I hope she found a bit more closure everytime she sung this song.
Yes, and every time I hear it my heart breaks just like the first time. She has an extremely rare power to tame that type of emotion - to let it live strong and exposed without letting it destroy you.
I had the rare privilege of meeting this talented woman and having a meal with her. I was a sophomore in high school and she was unforgettable and funny and cool as hell.
It hurts me how people can hear and see this, and give all their attention to her facial expressions rather than the way she transpires passion, mourning, pain... this was real talent rather than looks.

How did Etta not win an award for this song but Rod Stewart won one for it? I really like Rod Stewart’s cover but Etta’s is so powerful, so soulful, she makes you feel this song. She “sang it” as my people say. 🎤🎼🎸🎹
This is real art. I have never experienced this kind of heart break spoken about in this song. Yet she transported me to that exact place of deep pain and made me feel it. Feel it to the point of watching tears run down my cheeks helplessly. This is why Etta James is Etta James.

It’s almost 2023 and this is still one of the BEST Live Performances EVER! Today’s pop artist can’t touch this LADY. I Cried watching this performance because I could FEEL her pain.
When I first heard this as a young man who had never been in love, my soul brother laughed and said your time is coming! I was sitting at the bar and BLOWN away…,
@@judyberry5447 First of all, Im not your honey, nor your baby. Secondly she can do whatever she wants, but that does not change what made her amazing.
@@rondaallen7211 Do you think you and "sleeping bear" could come up with 2 brain cells to rub together? Only thing messed up is your analogy of the lyrics. Lets hear a song you have written.
If you never had your heartbroken, or you read a book, see a doctor, smoke some bud, drink some Muscato, YOU STILL WILL NOT get it ; all you need to do is listen to this song AND you will understand what a broken heart feels like.
I was 21 y.o. when this song was released. I had just gone through the gut-wrenching realization that my relationship was over when I saw him walking arm-in-arm with her. No letter. No goodbye. Just a see-it-and-weep. Pain is part of being human, and I had never felt so very human in all my life.
Oh, she says it so well... That moment when you realize that the thing you wanted so badly is not going to happen. Whatever might have started, it's over. Whatever you dreamed, that's over, and done or just never was. Thank you Etta, posthumously. You got it right.
how deeply I feel this at the moment. It's like the moment of death. All the things that could have been are left for others to enjoy but not you. I rather be a blind girl. Enjoy the moment and keep my essence
Agree, Dawn M, and how confident must a singer be in the strength of her vocal *power to perform at the Montreaux Jazz Festival and show her audience that she can even sing *without the mic, and *still be clearly heard over her brass-filled band !
We will never have another Nina Simone, nor, now, another Etta. But I still enjoy Beth Hart for *incredible all-around vocals and musicianship along with a Blues Artist from the Kansas City Blues Scene named Danielle Nicole, and an Irishwoman from Belfast named Kaz Hawkins.
I don't get it. Everybody's making comments about her making faces, how she's walking, and whether she high or not. How about the way she sang the song. She hit every note perfectly. That's all that matters, and she sang it hard to express the pain & emotions of the song. High or not fantasia job Etta James. R.I.P.
Totally agree should never be mocked incredible talent don't get talent like hers. Anyone stop to think that she's getting into her music and reaching the notes
Etta James put her soul in this performance. Singers aren’t like this anymore, they’re not putting life into the music. I want my singers sweating and sangin’ 🙌🏾
the sweat!! the tears!! the emotion!! how silent everyone was just soaking up her performance and being so entranced in the story she was telling through this song just makes this performance so much better than anything we can experience now a days. RIP 🕊️
She never got the Recognition she deserved. I used to run the streets being young and wild in the 70's and she would be in the clubs and I remember her well because she was involved With a guy called Slim who was a known pimp ❤
Saw Etta about 6 months prior to her passing, opening for Al Green and BB King. She was helped out on stage and sat on a chair for her set. She still could sing the hell out of all of her songs. ❤
This women can sing on heroine in a way I couldn't sing stone cold sober and after 5 years of vocal lessons. She's amazing and she had such a hard life.
Yesss. This is the era when it was real. Where thru the alcohol and drugs and heartache, she put it all on stage and sang every emotion she could. I love it
No matter how many times I watch this it brings me to tears. So much emotion in a song, beautifully crafted and delivered. Etta was one of the true greats of this genre. It doesn't matter if played on the phone or over some exotic HiFi. She takes it straight to your heart. Wonderful lady.
It gives me the tears as well. I know its a great song when I can cry without having it remind me of a past love. The only other song that does that to me in the same way is Claire de Lune. I heard it as a kid and cried for no reason. My mom said I was an old soul. Now Im just old. 🤦♀️
She ABSOLUTELY DESTROYS ME Every single time in this performance, can I get an Amen?!!! One of the best vocal performances I have ever seen!! Hands Down!!!
When was the last time we saw a performance of a woman all covered? Nothing hanging out and the audience is still captivated. It helps to have natural talent
There will never be another Etta James, this performance just makes me love her more. The soul, true grit, and emotion in her voice during this song was phenomenal. She was out of this world and so talented. I love singing this song and adding the same amount of emotion that she does. You can feel the pain in her voice and the lyrics. It’s unreal, like an outer body experience 🤍
I was 6 years old, went to spend a weekend with my Aunt Betty and she played this song for me. She always bought records as soon as they came out. My parents did not let me listen to music like this. But My Auntie said, What goes on in her house stays in her house." It was a secret we kept between us. I learned to love all kinds of music, especially the Blues and Jazz.
I lived in Mahattan Beach...small world....wish I saw that concert small as it was I know she captivated the whole room and each and every person hasn't been the same since.. Thank You for sharing that
@@mariahyohannes Even if they did have it, it wouldn't have been accepted. A robot voice could never express a human emotion. That's why anyone from this era considers todays music garbage and talentless. When you have been exposed to real music and artist that are one of a kind voice, that brings something special. its hard to accept music that sounds exactly the same no matter what artist is playing with nothing special to display. For instance when Bruno Mars was using autotune, I thought he sounded horrible. But when I heard him sing with his actual voice, His actual talent shines. I thought he was great. You can not get the emotions of a song that comes from a singers voice from a computer. Imagine James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Al Green on autotune.. why would anyone ever want to destroy something so special?
Yeah.... but in 2021 we are keeping our vision, listening to our minds over our hearts, and being with the men who appreciates us and stays....Gods will
This music playing in the background, growing up back in the 70's on the record player takes me to my childhood days, growing up as a South African in the apartheid era, so much memories ❤❤

Had a crush on Miss Etta when I was a kid. Now at 76 I still have the same feelings.
Thunder doesn't get it...
awhhh aha bless you brother
Richard Roma how cute❤️
Daddy, I'm there with you!
That's so sweet!
It’s almost 2023 and this is still one of the BEST Live Performances EVER!
Today’s pop artist can’t touch this LADY. I Cried watching this performance because I could FEEL her pain.
I feel the performance in my stomach, that's what I call (Pro performance).
ofc
Absolutely
@@RD-nq7fl
Yes sir 👏 🙌
Today's artist don't feel thier music they just sing the words and try to showcase themselves instead of the song
When I first heard this as a young man who had never been in love, my soul brother laughed and said your time is coming! I was sitting at the bar and BLOWN away…,
She singing her absolute soul out ..she hurt but she’s turning it into something so beautiful and it’s crazy
And stoned out of her mind. Great vocals

@@judyberry5447 First of all, Im not your honey, nor your baby.
Secondly she can do whatever she wants, but that does not change what made her amazing.
She's singing about a man she loves that doesn't love her. That unrequited love is extremely painful but the song is still amazing.
@sleepingbear lol-and the lyric is messed up from the start-something told me it was over when i saw you talking to that girl...
hilarious.
@@rondaallen7211 Do you think you and "sleeping bear" could come up with 2 brain cells to rub together? Only thing messed up is your analogy of the lyrics. Lets hear a song you have written.
@@KStewart-th4sk you must be on your period so i will overlook the fact that you totally missed that we have the right ANALYSIS of the lyrics.
Amen amazing 😢😍
If you never had your heartbroken, or you read a book, see a doctor, smoke some bud, drink some Muscato, YOU STILL WILL NOT get it

Who’s listening in Jan 2020 , just beautiful!

Wow sensational absolutely sensational....
Of course i am! 🎶

The way that the musicians match the vibe.. is out of this world.

The pain means we are still alive. Physical and emotional!
My heart-break 💔 occurred after we broke up and I saw him and his new wife standing in front of the church christening his new baby girl 👶.
I hope you feel better now Big Sis.
@@fabricerwakabishya4396 oh good lord bless you dear. That would be a cruel pain. Sorry.
I hope you're better and stronger now.❤
I got chills when she just puts the mic down and looks so hard at the audience and just vocalizes pure emotion! Such power in her spirit!
She's ok but rather listen to Beth Hart's version . I'm 76yrs old
@sandrabiggin752 good for you ma'am.
Omg🥰❤️🔥
Stares right into their eyes and watches the reaction. Pure confidence!
He performed this song 10 years before i was born. And here i am listening to it in 2024 and it is still relevant. Golden i must say.
Are you freaking kidding me?!? Who TF puts an ad in the middle of Miss Etta James's testimony!?
I know right??? WTF😎
Right!! I was so HOT with Liberty Mutual, sap-suckas!!😡😡. Lol!!!
I have adblock, so I didn't notice that. That's crazy inappropriate though!

Oh, she says it so well... That moment when you realize that the thing you wanted so badly is not going to happen. Whatever might have started, it's over. Whatever you dreamed, that's over, and done or just never was. Thank you Etta, posthumously. You got it right.
So beautiful and it touch my heart
This comment got me whooooo😭
Suzaynn Schick that part!
That what you wanted so badly was never going to happen. Yes, that's the blues, strength from sorrow.
how deeply I feel this at the moment. It's like the moment of death. All the things that could have been are left for others to enjoy but not you. I rather be a blind girl. Enjoy the moment and keep my essence
Etta's faces are darling ! That's called expression of *emotion. Etta *wrote the song,
Etta gets to *sing the song any way she *wants to !
Bruce Coleman I love her facial expressions. She put it all out there ❤
Agree, Dawn M, and how confident must a singer be in the strength of her
vocal *power to perform at the Montreaux Jazz Festival and show her audience that she can even sing *without the mic, and *still be clearly
heard over her brass-filled band !
Bruce Coleman She was golden. My second favorite right next to Nina Simone
We will never have another Nina Simone, nor, now, another Etta. But I still
enjoy Beth Hart for *incredible all-around vocals and musicianship along
with a Blues Artist from the Kansas City Blues Scene named Danielle Nicole, and an Irishwoman from Belfast named Kaz Hawkins.
Bruce Coleman Amen❤️🙏🏾
I'm only 30 years old and her voice touched my soul to the point of tear came out my eyes I wish I was born in her days ❤❤❤❤❤❤

This, ladies and gentlemen is what soul & the blues, LOOKS, SOUNDS & FEELS like!!! Wow, just wow… ❤️😉
My thoughts exact !
#PREACH BABY! Thank you!
Selah...no truer words!!!
Haah yes. And that right amount of ego in the performance is the origin of that, isn’t it?
WORD!
Anyone stop to think that she's getting into her music and reaching the notes
maybe she just feeling tired who knows
For me it’s the best
mikimike agree with you
She sang that song like a true soul singer does, with all of their emotions, their whole body and unapologetically.
Absorbing this kind of performance and singing live must have been enchanting to the soul 😄
Ms. Etta James.... one of the very best to ever hold a microphone and let her voice fill the room with soul.
You can feel the pain.

Yes please put the RESPECT on her name bc she deserves that and more MS ETTA JAMES
Etta James put her soul in this performance. Singers aren’t like this anymore, they’re not putting life into the music. I want my singers sweating and sangin’ 🙌🏾
Sweating and sangin... love it!
exactlyyy
Janis Joplin and Etta James were the queens
Love this. She's so beautiful and that voice. Omgsh
Etta always put her heart into everything she sang.
the sweat!! the tears!! the emotion!! how silent everyone was just soaking up her performance and being so entranced in the story she was telling through this song just makes this performance so much better than anything we can experience now a days. RIP 🕊️
I love her very much❤ R.I.P.😢
I was born 16 years after this performance and I’ve watched it 20+ times. I can’t explain how powerful it is. ❤
Etta james is a legend. She deserves more recognition. Timeless piece of art that extends past her time.
You’re right. There is a clip of that performance on YT. Unbelievable vocals even at an old age!
Beautiful memory to hold on to ❤️

D. Esterling You nailed it with that comment.
This women can sing on heroine in a way I couldn't sing stone cold sober and after 5 years of vocal lessons. She's amazing and she had such a hard life.
You can hear the pain in her voice....wow..........so much pain and emotion, real singing....

Real Blues right there
Yesss. This is the era when it was real. Where thru the alcohol and drugs and heartache, she put it all on stage and sang every emotion she could. I love it
Without the mic she still express her pain in her vocals
just fantastic
No matter how many times I watch this it brings me to tears. So much emotion in a song, beautifully crafted and delivered. Etta was one of the true greats of this genre. It doesn't matter if played on the phone or over some exotic HiFi. She takes it straight to your heart. Wonderful lady.
I hear this song every day,. Love so much this woman.
ABSOLUTELY !
SO DEEP
I'm cutting onions right now
It gives me the tears as well.

I completely fried my speakers with this video/song of the amazing Etta James. It was worth it for me to show these youngsters what real music is!
If this song doesn't break your heart, you dont have one.

I don’t have a heart that really hurts you know so I do
breaks mine every time i hear it
For a woman!
@Inez Whatley don't tell that to a woman unless u want to make her sad!!!😇♥️🤔
Or it's too broke to feel any more...
This just gutted me. To the depth of my soul. The voice. The passion. The sorrow. The eyes. Everything about this, is achingly beautiful.
No dancers, no fancy lights or gimmicks, just a women with her band. Simply awesome.
Not sexualized either. PURE Etta!
This is the very very best performance I have ever seen or heard of this song by Etta herself. I love it ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
I agree!!
When was the last time we saw a performance of a woman all covered? Nothing hanging out and the audience is still captivated. It helps to have natural talent
No twerking
Thank God there is this recording showing her total talented genius. Damn, she is missed!
I'm 15 and, sadly my friends don't understand the reason why I love this song...poor guys
THAT'S REAL GOOD MUSIC YALL!!!!
They've got no soul!
You're wise beyond your years-I'm sure. Give them some time:).
You are ahead of your time young lady!!
Im 20 and i love it
Listen to Angelina Jordans cover. So young and full of soul.
She doesn't even care where the mic is, half the time it's on her hip. That strong, that real
Church singing...no mic back in her day...
She didn't need the mic to be heard....that's power
She knows exactly where the mic is. Trust.
Truth!
To me all music 🎶🎵in the 60's & 70's do.
That is so damn fucking truth about right about that shit right about this song right here it will never in the fucking world be a other etta
I too love singing Etta, since I was 16, I'm now 70 can still do it, but not like that QUEEN!!!!
absolutely. you said it all. outstanding performance. will never be another Etta
Never Ever Ever
When I listen to Etta, James sings this song and she finishes up the song with that one line,,,,,, I'd rather go blind,,,,,. I believe it,,,,,,,,,❣️
I was 6 years old, went to spend a weekend with my Aunt Betty and she played this song for me. She always bought records as soon as they came out. My parents did not let me listen to music like this. But My Auntie said, What goes on in her house stays in her house." It was a secret we kept between us. I learned to love all kinds of music, especially the Blues and Jazz.

God bless Aunt Betty
I saw Etta at the Hermosa Beach Lighthouse Cafe in 1981. Maybe 150+ people in the audience. She sang her soul out. I still get goosebumps...

You were so lucky, so many of these artists I adore, but missed.
No auto tune here, just pure talent.
Can't using something that didn't exist then
@@mariahyohannes Even if they did have it, it wouldn't have been accepted.
