This was the best game I have every watched live. The tension, the clock running down to 40 move, the middle game, the strategy, the end game. BRILLIANT.
This isn't the greatest world championship game ever, but it's certainly one of the greats. It should also be pointed out that the previous longest game (Korchnoi-Karpov 1978) was adjourned a couple of times. It wasn't played all in one sitting like this one was.
@@louiscyfer6944 it was Ian who decided to go with that trade. He placed the rook over the queen and offered (almost forced) an exchange. Not like it changes anything, just that both players wanted to spice things up
Andrea was right when she said only Magnus knew how the knight moves because this match Ian missed that the rook was indirectly protected by the knight
I think the commentators were more excited about the record number of moves made than that there was finally a rare win in a world chess championship game
Great job both Magnus and Ian. And we can't ever blame Ian for losing or blundering against this champion. Simply, because he's playing versus a BIOLOGICAL CHESS ENGINE. #The_Longest_Game in the Chess World Championship
Our world champ pushed very hard on this game and did not let go. Very well deserved win against a vaillant opponent. I hope Nepo gets a revenge in this game so we get more exciting games.
Does the length of this match show that it's getting more difficult to win in chess with the relatively small move set (compared to Go) and the supercomputer training that they can both take advantage of?
To add to the previous comment: On such a high (human) level of play, classical Chess is going do be a draw-dominated time format, just because players rarely blunder. The mistake Nepo made is not an obvious one. Qe6 looks SO natural, and when under such time pressure, you trust your intuition. Would he have found Qb1 or Qc2 with more time? Probably, yes. But compared to his blunder in game 8, this was just a minor slip up which lead to devistation. For chess in general: Just look at the TCEC. Pretty much the only Enginges fighting for the win here are Leela and Stockfish, with Stockfish currently having the upper hand by quite a bit, winning the last Superfinal (Season 21) 56 - 44. Last time Leela has won was in Season 17. In this last Superfinal, Stockfish scored 19 wins, 74 draws and 7 losses, so a draw rate of around 75%, which is MUCH lower than in human chess. Keep in mind, their Elo is at 3637 and 3618, respectively. Humans most likely won't ever break the 3000 mark (or just because of inflation of the point pool, which is why ELO is not a good rating system).
I can watch this, and watch, and watch all the time. It's beautiful and terrifying at the same time how brutal chess is. Most brutal game in fight sports.
Why is Magnus Carlsen talking about himself in 3rd person? "Magnus Carlsen Won Against Nepo" i tought this was his channel? (I know someone else is running this channel, relax :D)

there are certificate exams out there that take even longer than that, check out the OSCP for example.

Magnus showed his will to win, powering through fatigue and keeping his focus. That's what champions are made of. Awesome!
Magnus you have our full support, We want you to win the world championship. Best of luck!
I'm just glad this finals is so much more fun and watchable than the 2018 Caruana one. Can't really care who wins, it's just fun to watch.

Congrats Magnus. I remember watching Fischer play and then Kasparov, and now I get to see the greatest of all time!

Ian Nepomniactchi throwing game 8 of the world chess championship right now.
Andrea would be pleased to know that Ian knows how the knight moves
He does now...
Nepo’s preparation is so much better than Magnus.
But Magnus is… Magnus. 💪🏻
His openings don't give him obvious and immediate advantages, but Caruana still says that Magnus is the best prepared.
Magnus was in fact really well prepared in the whole match.
