I've been engrossed in all five parts of your video so far. I wish that I had your talent, patience and experience. I love how much time and attention to detail you spend on this guitar... I don't know how much it cost, but it's worth infinitely more now as a unique instrument.
+Peter Marshall thanks for the comment. This guitar needs one more coat and a buff out. I want to sell it but wanna keep it as well, its a one of a kind for sure.
Love the finish. I thought Brock Burst have more yellow on the middle but I really like this one. Hope you demo this guitar once it's done, really want to know how it sound.
FYI, Lawrence-McFadden lacquer is still available, Seagrave Coatings bought them out. AFAIK it's still the same formula, just under a different brand name.
I am Impressed young man! I will wait for what maybe the final video on this awesome and amazing restoration you are performing on this great Les Paul!
Can you aplie dark Brown and red what you where doing and dont sanding it? does the Wood than hold the Paint? I Just dont know much about painting and i want maybe applied angelus leather dyes on a drum set because it looks really cool on your guitar
Nice job, looks really great. It's funny how you find all the imperfections in this Gibson, That's why I though they over charged. Quality comes with a price but it doesn't always mean you get it.
big d guitars! got a question. once i sand the mahogany and fill it with grain filler and then sand that off can i spray my nitro? or do i have to spray a sanding sealer? if so why? also how would i finish a hornbeam wood headstock veneer?? (les paul)
Isn't a brock burst some kind of German sausage? I really appreciate the way that you show all the little mistakes and problems, and the way you work around them. Really useful. Thank you for posting.
Hey great video! Do you sand each coat of lacquer down before putting on another coat? Because Im rubbing on Poly Lacquer on my guitar project but I'm having a hard time getting it to dry without any runs or small particles getting into the finish...Should I have put Sanding sealer on first before applying the poly?
+Harry Muff I moved to nashville and have just resetup shop. I was looking at the guitar last night saying I need to finish spraying this one. I am going to try and get some nitro on it today. I will get a vid up on the final before summer
I watched the 5 chapters. Your work is awesome. The way you deal with little things makes the big difference at the end. Congratulations! You would be my luthier if I were near your home. I´ve got a question I´ve got a 1978 25/50 Gibson LP. I bought this guitar used and it seems it was refretted, but keeping the original binding with nibs and all. But the binding is cracked slightly at the junction of the frets. If you want to make the binding again do you need to pull off the fretboard or not necessarily? thanks.
Hi, I am thinking about buying a diy kit of a les paul and I want to paint it like the Gibson lpj 2015 VINTAGE SUNBURST PERIMETER (SATIN) Do you know which paint I need to use? Thans a lot!
I gotta tell you man, RESPECT! You are a true artisan. That being said, after watching all 5 parts, I'd really like to see it finished and being played. You've got great how to video's but I think I speak for just about everybody when I say, can we see the finished product?
+Adrian Massi I moved to Nashville mid refinish. once it gets warmer I will finish spraying buff and load this thing up with electronics. The move threw off my life and vids!
+BigDGuitars - I understand, I look forward to see the finished projects. Are you going to show how you do the oil, lacquer, varnish, etc? I've ordered some of the Tint Dye, although I've noticed you switched over to the leather dye. Is there a reason you switched?
as a smoker I like the tobacco burst haha naw it looks awesome though. Great freaking job man. Wish you lived near me. I got a less paul that needs a LOT of work.
This is going to be a pretty amazing guitar when it gets finished. This is the one that had the crappy ripped up bindings isn't it? The ones that were filled all over the place. Was it an US made Les Paul? Sorry, I didn't remember if you had said. Thanks for posting all your work!
I just watched this entire project BigD, you are inspiration man ! So I have a question for you I've been asking a lot of people, but haven't got an answer to. I have this Epiphone Joe Bonamassa Gold top (solid color, poly finish). I've been thinking about refinishing it (to some kind of flame/burst). The question I have about that is this.. How much chance is there the top underneath the gold finish is good (grains and such) for a burst/flame ?
pretty much none. epiphone uses plain maple tops with veneers on some of their guitars. but concidering yours came with a gold finish there is probably no chance of a flame veneer. just a plain top. it can still(and probably will) look amazing. good luck
BigD, this was painful to watch. With the work you put into it, I thought you were going to tells us it belonged to Peter Frampton or someone famous. The end result didn’t disappoint as usual. I learned a lot by watching. It showed off your skills as luthier. 👍. Thanks for sharing.
That colour you had before applying the red leather dye was gorgeous

I'm in awe at how awesome your refinishing series for this LP has been. Thanks so much for posting! Subscribed.
Love the finish. I thought Brock Burst have more yellow on the middle but I really like this one. Hope you demo this guitar once it's done, really want to know how it sound.
***** Brock burst is usually red yellow and brown, I need to use the brown in the middle to get that figure to pop.
Just bing watched 1 to 5 in this series. Great info. Keep them coming.

Great job! You make it look easy. Where can I find a kit for LP with the correct truss rod? Most I’ve found have hex key, and not the nut.
another great video man!! i was wondering if you use lacquer thinner for your first 4 coats (7:50). thank you =)
no thinner just nitro
@@bigdguitars thank you!
Really excellent, detailed luthier skills!

Post the next video!!! I'm dyeing here!
I'm gonna do this but I don't think angelus dyes ship to Britain 😔
Is that the same stain gibson uses? I have a sg faded and I want to apply a darker burst around the edge. Any insight would be appreciated.
I want to do a transparent/Olympic white stain over a dark blue or green accented grain how do I do this
Wish you are here in the Philippines to restore guitars.. :) Really cool way on restoring guitars man..
Nice job, looks really great. It's funny how you find all the imperfections in this Gibson, That's why I though they over charged. Quality comes with a price but it doesn't always mean you get it.
erm, part 6? please? loved this, wanna see the finished article?

Symon Fobbester the amount of filler I had to use because the destruction with the hide glue was unreal.
Symon Fobbester oh you meant bock wurst. sounds pretty similar. it's a reddish long sausage, right?
BigEdWo The finish on the guitar is a bit reddish. Sausage burst?
Symon Fobbester:-)
+BigEdWo nope, its usually a big sausage without casing
usually jarred in salt brine
If I wanted to apply a night burst would I still use this same method
Very nice!
Have you ever done a colour change on an Epiphone Les Paul? I dont think it is a real binding
Do you know where you can purchase older-ran down Gibson Les Pauls that need restoration? I'am wanting to do a project
great job man thank you
where can i buy Angela products?
I'm from Canada

Thanks for the advice!

If your still around how did you remove the neck? Didn't know that could be done?
Take off the fretboard. Then steam the neck. A ton of work to put it back together.
@@bigdguitars Would have loved to have seen a video on that. Thanks for your reply.

Hey, great videos. How's this process with a DIY kit that has a flame veneer?
sorry, whats your question again? he is refinishing/restoring a gibson les paul

what happened to the final video?

Love all the videos excellent work.I would hate to pay the bill on that one LOL.

Thank you very much Tomislav. Have a good one :)
+Ray Torvalds you are welcome
Goldtops are chosen to be goldtops becsuse the wood was subpar. Its how every epi. Gibson is. Any subpar wood is a solid color usually
I've watched this video series 5 times...so far.
+Philip Brister thanks!
How do u know how much stain to use?
+Donny Walker I have done a lot of videos and test on scrap pieces
How many hours do you figure went into this guitar? and by the way I loved the videos, very satisfying to watch.
Jessewebb10 Webb a lot of hours. Maybe 100 or more
Looks good D! Going to the last vid!
IT really starts to look like the Boneyard at 3:20
thanks for the video.
Looks great so far! Do you use, water based dye or alcohol based? Also, what's the size of the nozzle you use to spray the lacquer?

So many projects taking too long.
I can not be the only one who thought cam was upside down at 9:09 :(
You have spray equipment, so why not just spray the burst? It works a lot better.
Greg McKnight a lot of guys don't have the equipment so I like to show the rubbed on method.
you pronounce figured like figgered... its weird
Oooooh yea, spray that baby stroller, lol.
at what point is it worth just finishing an already made body hahaha
it's a pity to do such a good job and spoil it with an ugly paint
