I love how you are providing examples of two ways to hit these shots. A lot of other RUclips golfers will only show one method, stating "you have to hit it this way to lower your score". Your true teaching approach is greatly appreciated! Thank you. Cheers

I was taught the hands forward method, but I definitely like the higher softer ball path of the hands center method. Seems like, given some practice, it would give more control and be a bit more forgiving. I need to practice it to get the feel for it. And I’m sure I’m not the only one that can’t miss a green on purpose. But who knows, maybe if I start trying to miss the green more often I might end up on the green, because the opposite strategy doesn’t seem to be working for me. Lol.

I’m loving your chipping instruction. Suffered from the chip yips for years. Your chip and slide method has been a revelation! I used to slide but with my legs which caused me to hit the ground first and chunk every chip. I now rotate a lot more and getting more of the clubs bounce. I’m also hitting my chips much higher. Been practicing in the garden through the UK lockdown even more desperate for our courses to open to test the technique in real play

What I do given the situation:
    1) Floaty lie - hands forward square face
    2) Perfect lie - hands middle very slightly open face
    3) Very tight lie / ball even sitting down a little - Toe Down / Vertical Shaft Raymond Floyd Style chipping with toe of club

What a nice endorsement of the Phil Mickleson hinge and hold method of chipping around the green. Ball back in stance for a low shot and ball near front foot for higher shot. Super easy and accurate.

I used to be a hands forward guy, but during the lockdown I spent a lot of time in my backyard working on the center hands and rotation. When I finally made it out to play my chipping was great! Almost holes out several times and all chips felt solid. With my hands forward it brought the front edge into play and I would catch at least 1-2 heavy coming up way short. With the neutral hands the bounce of the club keeps that edge from biting so even an in-perfect swing turns out a better average.

  • @GP-yc2it

I use both methods depending on the situation. Do I need to run it out, do the check'n'release, hit the stock/neutral shot, or flop it? There are shots for all occasions!
    Hit'm straight!

I appreciate this video, I have always been a hands forward guy (drives included). Recently I’ve been watching a lot of other golfers and tried the center hands method. It was kind of a disaster. I have never sliced so badly in my life. I will keep looking at the hands center method while realizing I’m not crazy using a hands forward method. I will also keep missing greens to work on my shots 😎

I always try to decide if I want to lob it in with my 60. Or run it up with a pitching wedge. Depends on the green and how much room I have and if its uphill or downhill. Shot a 78 today at my cities toughest course. I don't usually break 80 but today I was making most putts within 10'. Also wasn't duffing any chip shots around the green! Feels great cant wait to go again on Friday!!

  • @georgesebren126

Depends on the distance and whether there is a bunker to go over or not. Mostly hands slightly forward with a 52. You have to have a good judge of where to land the chip to get it close though.

Great vid! Love you style of talking about the options (hands center vs hands forward) rather than staying hands center is best because that's how you play.
I'm hands center, personally but tha k's for explaining both and what happens to the face of the club when you lean your hands forward!
    Keep up the great work!

  • @phileoness
    @phileoness 4 года назад

I used the hands forward method with short shots close to the green with some green to work with. This is where people tend to use a 7 or something, but I like delofting a 56 or 60 with the hands forward method. It feels like a little putt. I do better that way than putting from off the green. It’s not a good method when you have to throw it further with less green to work with or if you’re gonna end up on a down slope. It does work nicely on an up hill lie and/or to an up hill green.

    Love it!
Been practicing 1 to 2 hours a day chipping 4 days a week!
Love hands forward! I definitely have to compensate for the miss left. This is where practice pays off. However 1 big huge thing (I think anyway ) is this helps ME keep my legs from moving so much. I tend to go heavy on the lead (for me left foot) . Sometimes I think too much weight on the left. But since practicing so much I play with a little bit of ball positions. Back foot inside heel for bump and run, middle of stance is about as far forward as I go for loft. And yes I even sometimes go as far forward as front left heel but I need to keep practicing that one cause it can get ugly. Love all your videos keep them up they are awesome!
    Ps 52 degree for me
And I just bought a Cleveland chipper with smart sole. It's about a 7 iron in loft .
I started calling it the cheater club
But have since called it the Chutter. Love it!!!

Courses reopened in San Diego. I am coming up short of the green while I get my swing and speed back but doing a lot more bump with and run with the PW than I ever had before. It's actually better than getting out the 54 degree and popping it up. However, your "low spinner" technique has also helped me when I need it.

  • @tscholent
    @tscholent 4 года назад

I use all the methods you’re showing depending on the lie ,distance and weather conditions. How ever being a 22 hc also makes decision making (which method to choose) another handicap and I sometimes wonder if one method per round would save me more strokes. When I first discovered the hands forward method I realized quite rapidly that chipping the ball firmer made the ball spin much higher and the ball would check and gun for the hole more often than not. My point being that a 20 hc player is near the green because of ability not choice so the mind then chooses the next method of saving a stroke ie. 3 foot circle.

Great video. I've been using both methods depending on the shot. I like the hands forward when in the taller grass to get a steeper angle. I'm using the 56 the most and only using the 60 when I need to. If I have room for the ball to roll, I really like to get the PW in my hands.

  • @anthonybennett4274

I am able to get out some days at lunch and do about an hour of practice. I alway played the ball back when chipping. I have started to use your method of center and more around my body. I am starting to find my distance and roll out are more predictable with your technique. I also tried that low check shot you had in one of you other videos I have messed it up but the other day I had to play over a bunker from about 30 yards and I did that and it worked text book . The ball actually backed up. My buddy's were clapping LOL

  • @jfeisel

I prefer hands forward. Get the balling rolling as soon as possible and with practice you can get feel for distance. I can never determine amount of spin/roll out when I go hands center. I also love the make-shift par 5.

  • @leoespino3686

I typically use the hands forward style on most of my chipping shots that require a little more travel. I like to use the toe of the club for better control and use it like a putter. The exception being when I have a tight lie with a small landing area (over a bunker). Next to my putting, it's usually the best shot I have. I ractice it all the time in my backyard.

Hands forward 9 times out of 10 (unless height required). Amongst golfers over 8 handicap, a ton more reliable and accurate. Also totally transferable between tight lies (links) and fluffy - because you always hit ball pre turf

Hey Matt, great video as always. My longer iron shots to the green usually go left therefore I would choose the hands center method. However I like to use my 54 degree wedge to bump and run which is more hands forward sometimes I will hood the club face to get the ball rolling better. You have a magnet personality the butterflies and the frogs come out to meet you much like the rooster. Stay safe my friend, sanitize up!

Method 2 (hands forward) I call a chip because it rolls out farther than it flies in the air. Method 1 (hands middle) I call a pitch because it flies further than it rolls out. I'm using the bounce here. Both methods clearly have their uses.

The object of a chip is to get the ball closer to the hole. No 1 assess the lie, 2 pick club, 3 decide high or low, 4 pick spot to land ball depending on terrain. Imagine you are throwing the ball to that spot, high or low that is your swing. Tight lies weight forward, fluffy lies weight in Centre. Personally I play a 60 wedge and prefer to play a high shot landing closer to the hole. This uses the trajectory to stop the ball more than spin which is not always guaranteed. I always aim for top of flag, it’s more aggressive.
