  • It has been almost four years since 71 people, including almost the entire squad of Brazilian football club Chapecoense, lost their lives in a plane crash just outside the city of Medellin in Colombia.
As with all disasters, whilst the world stops for a moment, ultimately the planet keeps on turning, and people's attention turns elsewhere.
But four years on from one of football's darkest days, in this short documentary, HITC Sevens revisits the heartbreak and agony of that incident, and how the people of Chapeco and Chapecoense as a club have fought to bounce back.

As an Atlético Nacional fan living in Medellín, i can remember every single moment, when a friend called me to tell me that the plane was missing from the radars, i cannot believe it, to then find out the tragedy, it was a massive pain. I followed them through that glorious campaign and couldn’t believe what i was watching, they were undoubtedly one of the best teams in the continent and as a Nacional fan i was really scared of facing them after their massive appearances against other South American giants. Every time i hear the glorious story of Chapecoense i can’t help but to cry, it is still a massive story about a group of people that flew so high that reach the skies and stay there. I will always root for them and expect to see them rebuild from the ashes and be there with the massive giants in South America, just as it is meant to be.
Great video Alfie, congrats for doing such a fine memorial and as always: VAMOS VAMOS CHAPEEEEE!!

Chapecoense tragedy, was something shocking, I remember when I got to school early in the morning and was told about what had happened, I think everybody here in Brazil isn't going to forget what was doing or where they were when told about it, and as a person who born in Santa Catarina, in Joinville, to be more specific, and happily they are playing very well this year, winning this season state championship and being playing a good football that remembers that team in 2016, of course not as good as that team. Most people here in Brazil has chapecoense as their second team, the team turned into something that belongs to Brazil now, no more only to the south of Brazil, or only here in state. And congratulations for taking about Chape, when the crash happend everyone was talking about but now they're not talking so much, and the club like majority of others clubs in Brazil, are suffering financial problems, majority and almost only because the crash, and that thing that the clubs and some football stars offered thing to Chapecoense at that time, everyone said but no one did something in reality.

I'm live very close of Chapecó just across the state border, and man chapecoense its a really big deal, I remember going to Chapecó before the acident ,and the atmosfere was incredible, its really very common here in the south that 80% its either grêmio or internacional fans ,19% are from some team of São Paulo or Rio . But Chapecó even before the acident created something trully unique.
I remember since my childhood seing the chapecoense climb to the top, in 2016 i had like 13 years and was not believing they made to the finals, the win over San Lorenzo in the semis was one of the craziest days of that year , fireworks until dawn. The day of the acident , my mother wake up Very early and saw in first hand the acident, she woke me crying, that was like un 9/11 to our comunity but since then we are more united than ever

There are no words that can be said to show our deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and supporters of those who perished in this tragedy. Alfie's final meaningful words of this video speak volumes. You are so right to say that if there's a second favourite team to support, it has to be Chapecoense. Even as a Corinthians fan, I could never be against Chape, and I am sincerely glad that the club has been able to move on, and are well on their way back to the Serie A. Right now they are second place in the Brazil's serie B so chances are they are gonna fight fro promotion and keep being a relevant team in the national scenario while fight to remain their state's best team for years to come... what a great story

Weather was not a significant factor here and only partially so at Munich. Sadly human incompetence was to blame in both cases. At Munich, the airport authority were to blame for failing to ensure that the runway was in a safe condition for use, although in fairness the dangers of doing so were not well understood at the time. The dangers of commencing a flight without sufficient fuel to reach the intended destination are, and always have been, blindingly obvious.

That Chapecoense's squads last game was against my team Palmeiras, that was the game we won the brasileirao. Palmeiras was one of the better run teams in Brazil so we managed to help a lot, some loans, and we played a friendly with the revenue being donated, and our new signing from Chape only didn't go because he was injured, (Hyoran is at Atletico-MG now). I had always felt a connection to chapeconse they have the same colors as us and they were promoted alongside us, at first I did not like them at all because they almost embarrassed us by winning the title of Serie B, as we the supposed giants almost finished second, and beating us very badly, but they were underdogs something that Palmeiras knows well especially in this period were we got promoted to serie a, almost got relegated again, and against all odds went on to win the Copa Do Brasil, followed by the Brasileirao, so just like everyone I learned to love Chapecoense, and their impressive group of players even before the crash, I was really sad when they got relegated, almost as much as when the plane crashed, I wanted Palmeiras to loan our best payers so they would not get relegated, even though I knew It was impossible. But they will come back Vamo Vamo Chape.

The Barcelona-Chape charity game with Jakson Follmann coming on to take kick-off was the moment that really got me. I'm also reminded of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl disaster of 2011, on their way to the first game of the season in the world's second biggest ice hockey league. It happened during the equivalent of the Community Shield, and the President of the league walked out onto the ice when the game hit a break and read out a statement informing everybody of the tragedy. On the other side of the Atlantic, Pavol Demitra's children learned of their father's death by reading that "is" had been changed to "was" in his wikipedia article.

I actually cried during this. I’ve never cried to a video or a movie before. Idk why. Football makes you feel things that you can’t get anywhere

Hey Alfie, I just thought of a cracking idea for a video you could do on the turbulent recent history of Goztepe in the Super Lig. They’re one of the Super Lig’s most well supported clubs (a bit like a Newcastle United, Sunderland or Strasbourg if you may). In the 2001/02 season, they finished seventh in the top flight, however from 2002 to 2008, they were relegated five times in six seasons, due to their inability to reduce their outstanding debt which resulted in the football club being banned from signing new players during that time. In August of 2007, a business based in Istanbul, vowed to take them back to the top flight making them one of the top five clubs in the country, but they were met with lots of suspicions from the fan base, and then they handed over the ownership to another bloke called Mehmet Sepil in 2014. Anyway, they’re back in the Super Lig as a solid mid table/weaker top half team. Why am I bringing all this up? Because apparently Abramovich is looking to possibly buy the club himself, after being sanctioned from the UK. It’s a crazy crazy story and may you could look into this, not to mention, they are not only a rare example of a club that is considered a neighbourhood club, as well as the fact that they’ve played in 3 different stadiums since 2011, but also in 1969, they became the first Turkish football team to play a semi-final of a European competition.

Just to point out, Chape was relegated, so you might think they're over, but not, one of the big 12 teams also got relegated, Cruzeiro, this is Brazilian football, it's hard even for the big teams, and Chape held their ground graciously, I'm 100% sure there's a lot they can do yet.
So, while you might not choose Chape as your 2nd team, why not your 3rd? I'll always follow Chape, it is my 3rd team (because the other 2 are from my childhood, São Paulo & Manchester United) and I'm sure they'll be back up to the Brasileirão soon.
*EDIT:* Chape is currently 2nd in the Brasileirão Série B, but they still have 2 games to play, and a single victory of 2 goals or more and they're 1st, I believe is they'll be back at Serie A this year.
