  • Cruzeiro are one of the most successful clubs in Brazil, and in South America, having won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A four times, the Copa do Brasil a record six times, and the Copa Libertadores twice.
The club from Belo Horizonte were crowned champions of Brazilian football / soccer in both 2013 and 2014, and won the Copa do Brasil as recently as 2018, yet they suffered their first relegation in 2019, and are now at threat of dropping down into the third tier.
Now managed by World Cup winning boss Luiz Felipe Scolari, in this documentary video, HITC Sevens takes a look at the rise and fall of Cruzeiro, and how their sudden decline has come about.

I'm a Cruzeiro fan since I was born I've been to many games and loved the club my whole life. It's very sad what happened to such a giant club in such a short period of time. The team was criminally run by Wagner and especially Itair (which bankrupted another team, Ipatinga FC from my home town). Now the team is deeply in debt and it seems unlikely to be able to gain promotion this year. We are slowly gaining some confidence that we will eventually return to the top tier, now with Felipão in charge and the new president has been able to make some very good deals for us. We are down but we are not out and hopefully we'll come back stronger!

But you missed a point that is interesting. The oldest, most expensive and sucesseful players, that we call "Medalhões" (huge medals) in Brazil were one of the biggest responsables of the relegation. Players like Neves, Fred, Dedé, Egídio and others.
They made Ceni get fired when the team was starting doing better and showed a poor attitude.
Neves was the worst of them all. He missed a penalty in one of the last games that was so off target that the fans thought he did that on pourpouse.
Than he faked an injury to miss the remaining matches. In the game against Palmeiras he wasnt even on the stadium to support. Instead, he was seen doing a popular drug, called lança, in the councert of a famous "pagode" artist

Good to see foreigns talking about Brazilian clubs, thank you.
As a Cruzeiro supporter, a few notes:
    - Wagner Pires de Sa took power in 2018, after the glorious 2017 season when Cruzeiro won Brazil Cup. Here, Brazil Cup is almost as valuable as Brazilian Championship, mainly because there are many big clubs, so it's hard to win anything (except useless state championships).
    - In addition to being called the biggest financial crisis from a Brazilian club in history, Cruzeiro was the first one to get relegated without retaining First Division's TV revenue, so it was always super easy for big clubs to return to Série A. In Brazil, money from TV is by far the biggest source of revenue. If the rule hadn't changed, Cruzeiro would earn almost as much TV money as all other Second Division clubs combined. But now the money is equally divided among all.
    - Cruzeiro former name was Palestra Italia, just like Palmeiras in São Paulo. Yale was another Italian descendants club from Belo Horizonte, it even played against Cruzeiro (Palestra Italia) a couple of times. When the government banned names and symbols related to The Axis, the name was provisionally changed to Palestra Mineiro (people from Minas Gerais state are "Mineiros"), then the board chose the name Cruzeiro, from Cruzeiro do Sul (Crux), one of the most known constellations, only visible in southern sky. You can see Cruzeiro's stars on almost every Brazilian symbol (including the flag), on Australia and New Zealand flags etc.

one big factor too is that the Brazilian league stopped giving parachute payments to clubs that dropped from Serie A to Serie B, which used to be a huge factor for relegated clubs to keep some of their squad and coast back to promotion the following year. Not only is Cruzeiro in huge debt, but they didn't get the extra cash that clubs like Vasco got when they got the drop. But considering Chapecoense's form in the Serie B, it's not much of an excuse.
Also, an even more dramatic fall was Fluminense in the late 90s, the only big club to drop to the 2nd division and then to the 3rd division the following year. They only got back to the 1st division through some unbelievably ridiculous rule changes that pulled them (and pretty much just them) up from the 3rd division straight to the 1st division in 2000, in the aptly named Copa João Havelange. Since then they still owe the Brazilian people at least one season in the 2nd division, having gotten out of that recently through another ridiculous set of off-field rulings.

I'm a supporter of Cruzeiro and this video is a good summary of what happened.
The directors board of the club has always been an equivalent to North Korea,
nobody outside knows what is happening until the scandal.
The fact is that the club has had problems since 2004, the representatives of the clube at the time, Perrella's family organized an almost complete dismantling of the 2003 squad (best Brazilian team in this century), selling very talented athletes at a bargain price, they even brought Rivaldo (the same as was at the 2002 World Cup) for 04 season, but unfortunately it was one of the worst signings in the club's history, Zezé Perrella later dedicated himself to politics, becoming a senator, and lforgotting and leaving the club on the verge of relegation in 2011, we didn't fall because luckily the last game was against the rival who is a historic customer (the game ended in a resounding 6x1). In 2012 there was a small change in the presidency of the club, the name was changed, but the candidate Gilvan Tavares received support from Perrela's to take over, after an apathetic first year, in 2013 a very strong cast was assembled and until then without great stars, players like Éverton Ribeiro (today at Flamengo) and Ricardo Goulart (today at Guangzhou Evergrande) came as strangers and left their names marked in history, 2014 the cast became even stronger and almost did repeat the feat of 2003's season, at the end of the year the cast was dismantled again, some promising sales were made, like Lucas Silva's for Real Madrid, but what we saw in the following seasons was the real beginning of the problem, because the money earned in these sales was not used to pay the team's debts, but to bring expensive players that despite the titles in 17 and 18 seasons, brought and still bring problems to the club,
namely Thiago Neves and Fred, although Wagner Pires was the president, the person who commanded everything by the shadows was Itair Machado (my blood boils just having to write the name of that citizen, i hope this bastard burns in the bottom of the hell), a good part of supporters didn't want him to participate in the club, he had already been responsible for the disappearance of another club in the same state, Ipatinga (they still barely exist today), another party of supporters(tehe organizated ones in good part) started supported him because of his speeches, but everyone knew of the growing debts left by previous administrations, what did Wagner and Itair and company do? They doubled the debt, increasing the wages of players to unsustainable levels for the club, and letting them think they do as they want.
I don't like the style of game proposed by Mano Menezes, but it worked on the cups, while the titles and good campaigns came in this type of competition, the Brazilian championship was treated as a side competition since 2015, proof of this that even on the apocaliptic 2019 season the club reached the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil (including a 3x0 against our customer) and was only eliminated in Libertadores by River Plate in the penalty shootout.
But it was felt since February that things didn’t look so good behind the scenes, until the scandal appeared on TV, the managers started using Mano Menezes as a shield and scapegoat, and the players started not wanting to play because of the delay of wages, Mano left, Ceni came and proposed to "remove" the problematic players from the team and bring boys from the base categories (who barely had a chance with Mano Menezes), the supporters agreed with the idea, the problematic players and the board directors didn't, so they dismissed Ceni to bring Abel Braga a friend coach of the problematic players,
and things only got worse until the relegation ...
A board of directors took over to save the club from bankruptcy, followed by a new president, which has been trying to pick up the pieces, but the big problem for supporters today is TRUST, in the work done by everyone there, because despite the reconstruction of what they currently call Novo Cruzeiro and the current president Sérgio Rodrigues has been trying to create ways to pay the debts, strange attitudes like selling promising athletes at a bargain price, remain a problem,
and despite the current reaction with Scolari in charge(who came with a very high severance fine) ,
unfortunately I believe it will be very difficult to return to Serie A this season, which would complicate the club's life a lot in the next year...

Hey, Alfie! Cheers for the very detailed and accurate documentary about my hometown club! I don't know if you regularly follow the Campeonato Brasileiro, but nevertheless it must have taken you a long time to research everything.
I have just two wee corrections:
1- Cruzeiro was actually founded as Società Sportiva Palestra Itália. Some dissidents from Yale (which was also a big club from the city) went on to help in the foundation of the new club. Years later, when the local government prohibited any organizations with cultural ties to Italian, German or Japanese cultures, the name Ypiranga was suggested, given the importance of said river to Brazilian history (it is where D. Pedro I theoretically declared Brazil's independence from Portugal). Still, they ended up choosing Cruzeiro in honour of the Southern Cross constellation (a traditional symbol of Brazil, which is also present in our National Anthem, similar to the Ipiranga river). Hence, the club has only been named Palestra Itália and Cruzeiro.
2- Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you mentioned that, from that Cruzeiro team which lifted several national trophies a few years ago, only one player was still at the club (Ariel Cabral). But, we still have Fábio! He has been elected Campeonato Brasileiro's best goalkeeper multiple times and has over 800 appearances for the club. He's still our #1 keeper, captain and holds the record for most games played for Cruzeiro. A living legend who refused to leave the club even at its darkest moment.
That's about it! Once again, cheers for the video and keep up with the great content! Best wishes from a heartbroken Série B fan hahaha

They were once The Cong FC, a giant of Vietnamese football in the 90s however they disappeared into the lower leagues in 2010 before being reincarnated into Viettel FC, who worked their way back into the top flight in 2018 as Vietnamese second tier champions of that year. Two years later, they literally won the 2020 V.League 1, the Vietnamese top flight. What a story that could be!

What an excellent content! You really put a lot of effort here! As many viewers are commenting, it's great to know that people from Europe are treating Latin-American football with such respect. Unfortunately not all of us from the South spend our time supporting local clubs anymore, although many of these clubs are as great or even greater than a lot of European ones that we are following on TV nowadays...
As a Cruzeiro's fan, however, I'm compelled to make some notes. Cruzeiro's first name was Società Sportiva Palestra Italia, not Yale. Founded between 1909 and 1910, Yale Atlético Clube was another football club created by Italian immigrants in Belo Horizonte, and some of its dissident members actually took part on Cruzeiro's establishment in 1921. In 1942, as you correctly said, the club changed its name under war policies made by our government at the time, since Brazil had allied itself with anti-Axis forces in the World War II. Since then Cruzeiro is called Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, and the new colours of our jersey pay a tribute not to Yale, but still to Italia, whose national team, as everyone knows, also wears a blue and white uniform. So, strictly speaking, we embraced a different name only once in our history, and our first and current main jerseys celebrate the birthplace of the club's pioneers.
Anyway, I really hope to watch other videos focusing Cruzeiro at this channel - in circumstances much better than these, of course.

They bounced back from 2-0 losses in the semis and the final's 1st leg (the final used to be 2 legs) with amazing last goal minutes to win the libertadores (south american ucl)
2014 - In the Copa Do Brasil bounced back twice (quarters and semis) from 2-0 in the first match and conceded 1 at home in the second leg, with the away goal rule, and with last minute goals turned it to 4-1. The final was against their biggest rivals, Cruzeiro, which they won

Should be noticed that the reporter responsible for breaking the story was from Rio de Janeiro- the press in Belo Horizonte already knew about it, but kept quiet because they were cozy with the board.
Most importantly, the club had, even for Brazilian standards, had an absurd amount of political influence, both from the political groups of former governors Aécio Neves (from PSDB, a center-right politician) and Fernando Pimentel (from PT, a left-wing politician), both of whom notoriously corrupt and used the club for political points.

He's actually a great coach, but when he arrived, he tried to give more opportunities to young players in the club! But the older Cruzeiro players revolted because they were staying on the bench, which created a lot of animosity within the team, and when they entered, they played unwillingly, so Rogério Ceni was fired!

One of our star supporters, a lady by the name of Dona Salomé (that was a fan of the club since the foundations of it) died in the day of our relegation to the Serie B, such as the sadness that impregnated everyone, even her, to see a club that se loved so much, been treated the way that it was, and culminating in that result. But with Scolari, things are looking way better and the spirit of the team finally is being revived, so high hopes for what's coming! And just adding something: Cruzeiro not only won both of Brasileiros in '13 and '14, but won both of the Copa do Brasil in '17 and '18! Just to show how what happened caught us by surprise, to think that our club was doing great and winning, and then everything falls apart and now, 2 years later, we're fighting for the relegation to Serie C... Anyway, great video again, hope to see more in the future!

On my God I have been a fan of this channel for the longest time and being a Brazilian American and fan of Cruzeiro this has been great. I have a lot of faith in our new president and hopefully, there will be changes in the structure of the club to come. Felipao (Scolari) has had an impressive run of games so far and hopefully, they win tonight. Even in the club's darkest days, we have hit a corner when we got a new president, and going forward believe we will recover and come back stronger.

18 of the 20 clubs that play brasileirão seria A is going to follow Cruzeiro sooner or later (that includes my club as well)
    Santos is almost bankrupt
Botafogo General Manager says that the club have no more money(even before buying Keisuke Honda and Kalou)
Corinthians and São Paulo have debts that are Impossible tô be paid that are almost in the billions..
So in resume, this could be one of the last years o Brazilian football.

Just to remember: Fluminense had a similar (perhaps worse) situation happen to them in the 90s. They were relegated to the second division in 97... and to the third division in 98. If I'm not mistaken they won the third division in 99. Then the league was reformulated in some weird way and they were invited back to the first division.

I'm brazilian and I can say that Cruzeiro is only one of many brasilian clubs that the presidents spend the money they don't have just to win championships and show off to the fans that they are bringing glory to the club. Cruzeiro was the first to go down, but Botafogo, Vasco, Corinthians and Santos are bankrupt as well, and seems that Cruzeiro's greatest rival, Atlético Mineiro, is going to the same path.
It was a great video. Good work.

But he still got A LOT of things really wrong. I'm a cruzeiro fan and i can tell. Ariel cabral wasn't even a key man for cruzeiro, he wasn't even a starter. Denilson signed in 2016, 2 years before wagner took over. Cruzeiro actually won 2 brazilian cups between 2017 and 2018. Wagner took over in 2018 after the club finished 5th and won the cup. He said that scolari had 4 games before the game against botafogo, but he actually only had 3. He also only mentioned briefly the rogerio ceni era, which was one of the most important moments' of our relegation, since he only got sacked because some players didn't like him. If he didn't, we'd stay up. He barely mentioned Thiago Neves, the player most responsible for our relegation, and that even missed a penalty on porpouse

I'm a Flamengo fan, Botafogo is one of our rivals. Sometimes is funny to see your rival struggling but here in Brazil is just sad. Because if it happens with big clubs, imagine how worst is in the medium or little clubs.
