The Truth About The 'Death Match'

- The story of the 'Death Match' between Ukrainian outfit FC Start and German military team 'Flakelf' was the inspiration for the 1981 movie Escape to Victory, along with a handful of other films and books.
The story claims that a Ukrainian team made up of mostly ex Dynamo Kyiv players were told they had to lose a game whilst under German occupation, but refused.
In this video, HITC Sevens sorts the fact from the fiction when it comes to the Death Match, and what actually happened to the players involved that day in 1942.
Coming from a Ukrainian family, I’ve heard versions of this story countless times, but to hear you tell the story so well, and be able to bring the details to such a wide audience moved me so much it gave me chills

The players of FC start are literally heroes, they are the true embodiment of true sportsmen and the spirit of never accepting a loss even when their lives were at stake, thank you alfie for bringing up this topic to light for many of us

@@WKogut It's very doubtful if they knew what the NKVD did at that time. Also the fact that NKVD as an organization being brutal and inhumane doesn't mean that every single NKVD rank and file member is guilty. Same way most former Waffen-SS soldiers are not prosecuted

My wife's family is from Kyiv and that was how I first learnt of this match. For many Ukrainians, learning an accurate account of the past and their ancestors is challenging if not impossible due to the tangled Web of Nazi and Soviet occupation.

4:13 well, cruelty and repression was not so widespread. Many people remembered Nazi soldiers as being kind and treating them well (at least in 1941-43). With many of really cruel people being either ex-Soviet soldiers or locals who rose to power in the German occupation times. There are still exceptions (in every war both powers mistreat civilians regularly, so that`s no surprise).
