When you think that the pitches were awful, no shin pads, tackles were career threatening, often played with injuries.

George Best was simply the best footballer in the world at the time. He lost the fire in his belly early on, and he quit the game in 1972. Of course, it was essentially a long slow slide into an alcoholics death. Very sad, but as they say, he did it his way. It's worth remembering that at the time he played the pitches weren't pristine and well cared for - they were waterlogged, full of holes, and uneven. Just extraordinary.
Why did people want to fight him? Well, look what personalities go through today, it's no different. He could never again be the "man on the street" after his football days.

Reading Michael Parkinsons book, Memoirs. Compulsive read. The man was a total soccer genius. A gentleman who just a quiet fellow but because of his genius they wouldnt leave him alone.

Lovely interview by Gay Byrne RTE Ireland. This was a live interview. He brought out the true strory from George Best. Not like that Terry Wogan idot that set up George Best before his BBC interview and got him plastered before he appeared on tv! That day I lost all respect for Terry Wogan and I'm Irish.

George Best was not only a genius with a glass and a few bottles, he was also a great footballer, great in attack - for which he was most remembered - but, he was a great defender too. Hard as nails. Indeed he was a flawed genius but, he recognised his failings and lived his life exactly how he wanted. Hats off to him.

He drank in pubs around Surbiton near where I live in Kingston SW London during his final years -
There were different stories from people approaching him, depending on his mood. It's annoying being harassed all the time -
The power of alcoholism drinking following a liver transplant - a terrible disease -

George Best was at least honest and open about himself. He did not deceive or delude or mislead himself or others and if he did something wrong he would admit it and own it. And those are admirable traits in my book. George was all right.

Best stopped playing top level at 26 so he could drink, when you think that Van Basten had his career robbed from him at 28 with a cruel injury and what he would have done for 8 more years of playing , it definitely wouldn’t have been spent drifting from one small time club to another , it would have been spent being at the top of his game , the reality of George Best is of someone who couldn’t be arsed , simple, the greatest player ever wouldn’t have played at Stockport county , Bournemouth & Cork Celtic that’s for certain …..
