    I remember in Yokohama the sweet potato man. He would call out "satooooo immooooo"! My Mom would give me some money and i'd go buy some. It was a metal oven box with a chimney on wheels. He would reach in a door and pull out some sweet potatoes and wrap them in newspaper. They were sooooo good!

      Hi Paul! Ah nostalgic. And they are so good!!!! They say "Yakiiiiii imooooo (焼き芋)" roated sweet potato. It's hard to find those on the street these days. :(

    As an American born and bred in the Deep South, I was raised eating a *lot* of sweet potatoes, both savory and as dessert (sweet potato pie is a favorite); so when I went to Japan and found that in some places (Nara, for instance) they sold them baked from carts as a treat, I was very happy! (I got chased by deer in Nara once-- they wanted to eat my sweet potato, and eventually they won.) So now I'm going to have to make this; luckily, there's a wonderful Asian market near me that carries Japanese sweet potatoes, so I know what I'll be making in a few days! Thank you so much for the recipe!

      So happy to hear that there is sweet potato dessert in the deep south and appreciate sweet potatoes as dessert. Japanese enjoy kabocha and sweet potato in desserts, so that's good to know! Hahaha funny story about Nara. This past summer we went to Nara again too and my daughter got bitten on her butt (with bite mark!). Thank you for your sweet comment and sharing your stories with us.

    I made this today for a Thanksgiving dessert. I was hesitant so I only made a couple, and made puff pastry with red bean filling for most of the people. This was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be, and although I’d had it in Japan and just loved it, I had no idea EVERYBODY would go crazy for it. Silly me. Thank you so much for this recipe.

    Nami san, that look so good but i’m both lactose intolerant & too lazy to fuss. So i usually just boil my satsumaimo or on lazier days, simply microwave them for 5 min. Always so sweet but not too sweet. I even drink the water i boiled them in😃😃

    • @justonecookbook
      @justonecookbook  5 лет назад +1

      I'm lactose intolerant too... getting worse as I age (sigh). You can swap with lactose milk for heavy cream. That will work just fine. Yeah, this one is sort of labor-intensive especially the straining part - but if you have a food processor, slightly faster. I love this dessert so much, but I usually get lazy... but when I made it, I feel like I should have done it to feel the happiness. LOL. It's worth it, if you love satsumaimo like me!

      Well, Japanese sweet potatoes are much sweeter. So you probably need to make your sweet potato a bit sweeter if you want to make it into a dessert dish? If you try to keep it healthy, you don't have to. :) But yes, you can use other variety.

      You don't have to, but in Japan, "sweet potato" has this certain expectation of sweetness and creaminess, hence it includes indulging amount of cream, sugar, butter, and egg yolks... I have to go with the classic recipe, but please do feel free to adjust my recipe.
