@PackAndSoul In 2020, my first AT thru-hike attempt, at Mountain Crossing, every pack shakedown at the store when an extra ziploc plastic bag was found, the staff tried repeatedly to name the hikers before me (and also myself) "Ziploc". The Mountain Crossing staff were unsuccessful in every instance.

I find out the "rule" of not giving yourself a trail name is - according to past thru hikers I met on the AT (who hiked before early 2000s) - a "new" thing - before that, everyone chose their own.
Feel free to give yourself a trail name. I think half the hikers I met on the trail chose their own. There were also lots of people who used a name given to them by hiker friends before they hit the AT.
The process of having AT peeps give you a trail name will involve rejecting about 100 poop related ones, and then you end up "allowing" yourself to be called "skid mark" anyhow because you slip on trail or something - and you aren't getting any better option lol. (Not mine, just as real an example I could think of).
Ultimately, since you have veto power, you basically are choosing a name for yourself, anyhow. So why not choose something you like, and if the AT peeps can top it, go with that.
Making thing: have fun with it and LIKE your trail name.

"Papa Smurf" here... an old grey-haired guy with a blue shirt and a blue backpack. (See photo to the left) Hey, I've been called worse. How'd I get it? While on a solo hike I ended up hiking a section of a trail with a small group of mostly strangers. Someone in the group, "Joker", had the idea to give trail names to a couple of us who didn't have one. At the time I wasn't aware that this was even a thing. I was lucky. One guy in the group was called, "Dumpy". The story is, he got it one day after developing stomach issues and repeatedly being forced to step off the trail and dig a cat hole to take care of business. The funny thing is that he said it was better than his previous trail name, which he never would reveal. I guess the name I got wasn't so bad.
