I have my great grandpas 5.9, he bought it brand new and when he died it had just over 40,000 miles. It went to my grandma who put another 30,000 miles. I got it with 70,000 miles and perfect condition. Wouldnt trade it for any other offroad SUV under 40k. Its sitting now at just over 90,000 miles :)
Hope you dont drive that beauty other than the weekends. One of my closest friends growing up had one. Was absolutely stunning, and I loved the power. RIP ANDREW🕊
Bought one for my son as first vehicle in high school. He's driven it for 5 years and it's still going strong. That engine sounds better than anything made by any company today including Jeep. Just the best low rumble that gets into your guts and literally grows hair on the chest of any living creature in earshot.
What was the insurance like on a V-8 four-wheel-drive car for a high school boy? I ask because I’ve considered getting one of these as a winter beater and then giving it to my son
@@2steaksandwiches665 The insurance wasn't bad, it's the gas bills he'll have with that engine. 5.9 liter is a real thirsty girl. My son was smart enough to make sure anyone who got in for a ride had cash, gas, or ass. I'd recommend that you get a 3rd gen 4runner for your kid, 2000-2002. Solid as a tank and not great on gas but not terrible like V8. Just remember that if it's not front engine and V8 it's communist. Happy motoring and safe travels!
I’m so jealous of your 5.9 it’s the cleanest one I’ve ever seen I own 2 but they are rough examples haha that’s a sweet 5.9 for sure tho man and I’m glad your telling people about these awesome jeeps!
I have the same exact car, color and all. Mine has 200,000 miles on it. Engine never even opened up. I keep the oil changed every 3,000 miles with Mobile 1. I also have a 2014 Jeep SRT. I love both of them.
That's a very clean example. I daily drove a right hand drive version of this with the 4.0 motor. Thing still had a muscle car noise with the right exhaust, super comfortable seats and ride, but was a bit lacking in acceleration. I plan to import one from over there one day, so thank you for uploading something a bit more in depth than what you'd usually find on these!
I miss my Jeep ZJ 1996 with 250K miles 4x4 and still running strong... (Jeep JKU Wrangler now) but still look the ZJ pics and I say damn that Jeep was awesome!
My dad had one, it was the first car I learned to drive when i was like 11 yrs old, it wasnt stock, it had a beefy metal offroad bumper and a vinch he also used to use it as a snow plow car, man I loved it. Also been in a ditch and stuck in places with it.
I have been stickin those 5.9L MAGNUM motors in TJ.s. Just finisned up my 4th one. Always wanted that 98 with one but hasn't happened. Got too jeeps already.
5:40 Correction: All 5.9s came with rear disc brakes which were only an option (and not a terribly common one) on the 5.2 Limited and below models. It also shipped with marginally larger sway bars than the other models.
I still have mine but it has been sitting for a few years at my dads house...I have a 4.5inch Rubicon lift with 34" rock crushers....I have people constantly ask my dad if its for sale and when he says they can call me but dont count on it...I never get a call lol Honestly its my baby and I wouldn't let it go for under 10k and I'd still have to think about it at 10k.
I was surprised how quick these were, 0-60 in 6.8 seconds was a rocket at that time when it came to SUVs. My uncle had a 98 Dakota 5.9 RT and that thing was surprisingly a dog, even tho it had the same engine. I think they were mapped differently, at partial throttle, the Dakota 5.9 RT felt really strong. Mash the go pedal to the floor, and it was very disappointing.
Review a 1995 Cherokee limited. With the 5.2 awd... :). My daily driver. 5.2 Magnum, mine's ragged out, and I still enjoy it, but I'm 41, and haven't driven a car over the year of say 1996 - maybe I once drove a Ford escape maybe 2004 of a friend... But, when my jeep was nice, it would spin the tires, one front, one back, on dry pavement. The 95, and probably your 98, ARE jeeps. You'll figure that out when you USE it as a jeep. It's at home on a dirt road, just like my 86 Chevy Scottsdale 4×4, but she's a different story, but let me be honest, and say the jeep is better in MUD, in SNOW then my old pick-up. Take your jeep round some fast turns on gravel, dirt, or even snow you'll not feel the awd is weird then. I've never hauled anything with it, but I believe it would be a great hauler, mines got issues preventing a hitch install. My 5.2 kept up with a dodge Magnum on some back roads, or was that my truck? Fun in the mud, and snow is all I know. :) Highway driving is smooth. Power is great, shift her down low (2nd), and let her rip, you're passing, quickly, whatever's in front of you. I've also converted mine to a camper at one time. Crank the heat (GREAT HEAT), listen to some music, shit her off, night night. I'm 5'9", and for just ME it was comfortable. The 5.2 alternator is big, for all your power accessories, I have three batteries, one starting, two isolated, a third in the mix from time to time. Lights, all night, no worries, movies, no problem, lap top etc... All through my 1,000 watt power inverter. I've used it for hauling, for moving, I've thrown items on the roof, including pallets, strap them down on the roof rack, spare tires, whatever. Lay the seats down you can haul a nice amount of cargo... I made love to my ex- wife many times, in the back of that jeep... :)
ive got one in nj only 114k miles engine and trans amazing. broke the spring saddle in front last week so don't think im up to repairing it . email ltreacy@reagan.com if interested
They don't really compare, to be honest. The 5.9 Limited feels like a luxury vehicle that has gobs of power. The RAV4 feels like an inexpensive compact SUV with a small engine. But I love them both! If I had a favorite, I'd only have one of them in my garage.

No. This was the fastest at the time. AMG did first one in 1999 because Jeep did it first. They made a fast luxury 4x4 that started the trend all makers followed after. Unfortunately they all lost the 4x4 and are just fast now. The Niner still sounds better than everything else made today regardless of their power and amenities but will lose them on the trails for sure.
There was hardly a difference between the 5.2 and the 5.9 if you put the right mods on it they were damn near the same power. I mean my 97 5.2 that I traded in for my 5.9 was hardly any different, maybe there was something wrong with it because it hauled ass.
ya boi Gabe Newell I used 87 for the 5.2. I had a first gen K&N intake(one bolt) and a Borla muffler and tailpipe. The 5.9 with the same K&N, I put premium 91/92 all the time.
The 46re transmission if not maintained properly every 30 to 50,000 miles will start to make the five nine a little doggie. I have had both the five two and the five nine and there is just so much more power in a 5 9. I currently have three of them indifferent off-road flavors :-)

The grill is different for cooling reasons, the vents do function, hold your hand behind them while the fan is running.
