Man, makes my heart feel good you saving this 5.9 zj. Loved them since new as a kid and glad to see this one get treated right when most would've trashed it and killed the thing. While I'm commenting I'd like to ask for prayers for my mom who's in the ICU on a ventilator fighting covid for two weeks now. Thanks for this video. It was just the thing to ease my mind for a bit.
Now this reminded me of why I subscribed. The enthusiasm and pure joy of making something that you care about perfect is just my kind of thing that I love to watch!
I gotta say, if you remove the seat covering and buy a 20 dollar sewing awl that seat could be done in under an hour. Doing it with the seat in the car you really do need an awl to make the hole then put the needle through. Piliars and curved needle is a nightmare. Props to your wife for sewing as much as she did.
My dad used to fix up and flip auction cars when I was little so this brings back memories! Thanks for sharing what you do, and saving a beautiful Jeep from the junkyard.
It's nice to see a budget car save in the RUclips world of Ferrari and Lambo restaurations. Most RUclipsrs have strayed so far from what they became popular for, this is refreshing, and it looks like you had a ton of fun doing it. Thanks for sharing.
This is literally the best Jeep ever made and it's rare...I might have one in my own garage next to my 98 limited tomorrow. Happy to see you restoring it
It’s pretty easy on a later WJ as I recollect. I had them off mine to replace the seat heater element. Jeep did a repair pad that you just put between the foam and the cover and plugged into the existing wiring. It would be easy to re-sew the seam from the inside with the cover off
detail guys at the dealership use acid on wheel like that. spray it on, wait 15-20seconds, scrub lightly and rinse off. Comes right off no elbow grease.
I just love the fact that you saved a 5.9 Limited that was written off. I remember watching a video of someone killing one that was turned in for Cash 4 Clunkers, what a sad ending to a great vehicle!
That video still haunts me to this day. Only about 10,000 of these were ever made. I ran mine to 235,000 miles before the transmission gave out. I wouldn't sell it to anyone who just wanted it as a sweet parts car for their 5.2 limited. I eventually sold it to a wealthy family who wanted to recondition/restore it.
I get on the treadmill for my morning run thinking “I hope Alex has uploaded his Sat video”. I open my Phone...and here it is, “uploaded 56 seconds ago”. Thanks Alex! 39 minute run ahead of me....

You seem to understand what we all like! Please don't become all aloof and then buy multiple Lamborghinis and Ferraris that are projects that seem to never have a "finished" point.

Fortunatly you can use passenger seat cover on the drivers. My drivers is torn.. and every 5.9l i find in the salvage yard is torn.. So i took the passenger covers and it swapped right over easy
34:20 - If you pull the seat out, you can remove the hog rings and pull off the lower leather seat cover. Then just turn it upside down and stitch the leather back together...
I bought a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited from auction and I'm doing a rebuild on it. Got a junkyard rear bumper and fender, painted and clearcoated them, drain and fill on rear diff and trans, going through engine, had heads rebuilt (4.7L), replaced oil pump, timing chain set, water pump, various sensors, hoses...still not done, but looking forward to a pretty pristine SUV once I am done. Super comfortable, love it.
It was kinda fun time traveling back to watch this Jeep rejuvenation and contrasting your techniques from then with what you do now. What a difference three years can make... keep it up Alex!
I needed something to get through a bad Detroit winter 5yrs ago so I bought a JGC off my friend for cheap thinking it had the 5.2... Went to fill up and noticed it needed premium, that is when I realized what I had scored, the 5.9! What a powerhouse for that size of SUV. 9mpg and didn't care. Had to get rid of it that spring after finding out it needed a whole new transfer case along with a slew of random electrical issues... miss that car. Great job on this one!
I commented above I had a truck that tide detergent spilled in the back of it. A lot of tide. It basically never all came out. That truck smelled amazing for the rest of the time I owned it. Whenever I wanted to do a quick freshen up I literally poured a little water in the rug, foamed it up with a brush and cleaned the entire interior. It cleaned everything in the truck.
As a jeep owner and lover thank you for saving her, as a guy who has painted many cars the paint mismatch is driving me crazy....but all in all great job loved this one...
these things are so much fun to drive. I had the pleasure of driving one to highschool semi regularly. Turning the wheel at a stop & flooring it always produced fantastic results!
I drove my dad's 5.9 limited from time to time in high school. It was the fastest vehicle I had driven at the time and sounded so mean. I drove it through a Christmas tree field on prom night. I eventually bought it from him and drove it till the transmission blew up.

Oh my goodness, most definitely an 89-93 Fox body GT Mustang in triple black with the hatchback. That was my dream car as a young teen in the early 1990s.
This is awesome. I just bought a cheap fg4 civic SI from Texas with a Kraftwerks supercharger kit with larger injectors, full exhaust from the manifold down, and 58k miles. I had to remove the kit for it to drive, but after getting it moving I can't wait to save up and get everything in order! Your videos are an inspiration, thanks for making them!
Man, Glad to live in the south after seeing some of that crust! I look under my 08 with 240K on it and barely an surface rust! I'd have likely sent it with some new calipers!
Man, this has me reminiscing like crazy. My very first car back in 2006 was a black ‘98 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 Limited, and had the black/tweed cloth, and the wood grain trim hah I ended up getting a 5” pro comp suspension lift, some chrome American Racing off road steelies wrapped in some Terra Grapplers, a magnaflow exhaust, a K&N intake, a Yakima roof basket, and of course being a 16yo kid I had to throw a JBL 10” sub in a ported box in the back, all JBL door speakers/tweeters, and a gaudy Kenwood color changing headunit that came with the worlds most pointless little remote 😂 god I miss that jeep so much. For being a ‘98 I’m still blown away by how ahead of its time it was. Everything was electric, and the roof console setup and screen display it had was incredible. Could change it from a compass & ambient temp, to digital clock, to gps coordinates, to avg mpg, to gallons left in the tank, to your estimated remaining range, and even your travel time. I would LOVE to get into another one some day and do a nostalgia build making it exactly like I had mine back then.
Aloha Alex!!! I had a crazy night tonight, got to take the owner of all the dominos pizza shops in Hawaii’s BMW M5 first edition out on a few deliveries lol shared the story with 1320 videos and it’ll be up on their snapchat story tomorrow! Check it out if can!! Love the content man, always a great way to end my night!
I like this kind of "restore" better than some others I've seen. It really goes into the nuts and bolts that any moderately knowledgeable guy can do. Diagnostic on the reasons it would not start and then ran rough was cool. I learned a lot.
This video had it all! Drama, suspense, comedy! I was on the edge of my seat with the window sensor diagnosis. And the garbage can paint booth was an awesome idea. I had more fun watching this video than many 2 hour movies.
I have always loved the '98 5.9 Limited! Glad to see people still want them. Nothing like MOPAR in the '90s saying "let's take our biggest truck engine and put it in our SUV". Very fun always and fast as hell. I think Chrysler advertised them at the time as the fastest SUV in the world.
This came out great! I'm really glad you saved this. I love these ZJ's, especially the 5.9. I had a 97 ZJ up until 2013, I still miss it. It was a great vehicle, unfortunately New England rust had taken over. I owned it for about 12 years, it was always a great vehicle and never left me stranded. And you are 100% correct that they have amazing seats!
Year old but still nice to see old jeep come back to life. Found this preparing to get me a 98 5.9 finally. Trying to decide what direction i want to take it.
Your video of when you first had the car delivered popped up in my recommended feed, and had no idea that I’d be spending the next 2 and a half hours watching till the completed product. I must say that I’m not disappointed and glad I stuck around till the end, amazing content and in great detail. I’ll definitely be looking out for new videos and I can guarantee I’ll be checking out old videos as well!! Watching your video was very enjoyable and I’ve also learned a couple of tips to help me during my next car project. I’ll continue watching as long as you keep producing great material! Keep up the great work bud
My dad bought a white 5.9 almost brand new. We towed our four wheelers and went on many trips. That think was an absolute joy to floor from a dead stop, getting up to speed entering a highway, or when trying to get out in front of some traffic! 😁 I remember getting a super cars book in school and seeing our jeep being in it and thinking that was so cool! The 12 miles to the gallon gas mileage was horrendous though, I guess it cost to have fun though. 😎
Rust dust on wheels. My go to is rust removing toilet bowl cleaner, and 3M White Scotch pads. Apparently these were even recommended by 3M for removing said stains from clear coated wheels. If you ever get a wheel coated with brake rust, elbow grease and the above two, absolutely works. I recently had some brake pad destruction on my Audi, was neglected for a week or more. Came out perfect, and no scratches.
I've always wanted this SUV.i had the 5.2 LTR for 15yrs. Promised to give it to my son but it just had too many issues. Loved it -Miss it.great video, brings back so many memories.
Alex, last week I bought the AvalonKing ceramic coating with your coupon code! 🙂 I did it because I admire your work, effort, quality, and teaching on all your videos. Cheers from Portugal!
Always loved this era of Grand Cherokee. We rented a 4.0 Laredo from Enterprise in Toronto for our Honeymoon back in the day and have thoroughly enjoyed this resurrection. As a Brit it’s always interesting to see restoration of cars we didn’t get over here so maybe a 90s era pick up next?
Thanks for all the tips...I've had my 5.9 in the barn since the VC went out in the tcase. Swapping in a 242....a tip on those bleeders..grab a couple birthday candles, heat up that bleeder (or any corroded thread) press that candle into the threads like you were sweating copper pipe....let it cool...now loosen it. Only need a little, don't want a wax ball in your caliper
i wonder how many hours you have into this project, much less the sweat and toil and sore muscles. You worked your ass off to show us all this in 40 minutes and I thank you for that. It also helps me understand why I am a fanatic about keeping my car clean and detailed because it is so much less work to do a couple hours a month and have it look new.
My friend in high school, his grandfather had one that looked just like this. In Brainerd Minnesota funny enough. The moment I saw it I wondered if it was his old Jeep. I would love nothing less than to bring it back home where it belongs.
Finally you are back to origins. No more "youtuber" videos with visits to friends and car lots, and more of these amazing restoration videos which was why I subscribed in the first place. Great job!!
40 mins just passed like 4 mins, awesome content Alex.
Alex is one of my favorites 👍
But Fr. I didnt even notice.
I figured 39 minutes would be enough.. just finished the video wanting more! By far my favorite automotive RUclipsr.
Agreed
Oh, wow. I actually didn't even realise it was 40 minutes until I saw this comment. I figured only 20 minutes had passed, tops.

😂 your wife was spot on... "can you afford me being out here all day?"
Can't argue with that one!
Seriously, though, that seat would be fairly easy to fix once removed from the frame and sewn from the inside. That's how it was made.
You'd still have an old worn seat tho. And the wasted hours could be used growing a biz
Dude, you left the best part out... the exhaust note! Come on man!
Rip to that detailed blue Honda during the power washing segments.
The Jeep is looking absolutely fantastic.
Always love seeing a car brought back from the dead and cleaned up
I just sold my 96 Grand Cherokee limited with 295,000 miles, thing looked mint and drove like a champ. That 5.2 V8 was still super smooth
I’ve got a 1994, 5.2 with 311k bought in 1995 biggest issue is water pumps no 5 rebuilt tranny 3 years ago, original engine.
Nice job. I was a Dodge Jeep Chrysler Dealer tech for 8 years. I have worked on a ton of those Jeeps

This is literally the best Jeep ever made and it's rare...I might have one in my own garage next to my 98 limited tomorrow. Happy to see you restoring it
Did you buy it? My dad had one of these when I was in high school. I eventually bought it from him in my mid 20's. Most badass jeep ever made.
can you remove the seat cover to re-sew it? Should be easier than sewing with it attached to the seat foam.
It’s pretty easy on a later WJ as I recollect. I had them off mine to replace the seat heater element. Jeep did a repair pad that you just put between the foam and the cover and plugged into the existing wiring. It would be easy to re-sew the seam from the inside with the cover off
Its Easier to me do it without Taking it out.
Probably cheaper to remove the front seat, and take it to an upholstery shop. They could refresh the foam/padding while they are at it.
So, sew, sow.
10 minutes and the seat cover is in your hands!
detail guys at the dealership use acid on wheel like that. spray it on, wait 15-20seconds, scrub lightly and rinse off. Comes right off no elbow grease.
I've been rewarding my new to me miata with new parts, similar to the way you've you've doing it. Love it bro!

This is the type of series I really enjoy watching.
My wife wants to know why you didn’t clean the J in the Jeep logo. It really bugged her
Having a silver, brand new looking rim back therte triggers me much more
Not taking the wheel off to clean it was the worst.
@anthonyduncan5920 no need on a budget truck lol
I believe the J was missing. That's why he mentioned new decals at the end of the video

I had a black one. They only came in I think 4 colors. One car I regret selling. Awesome stock exhaust sound on them.
5.9 Limited had a specific leather on the seats and door panels, it might end up being easier to sew up that seat bottom.

Great job!!
