    Thanks to your and RC saylor,s review I bought this for my very first RC jet/aircraft not first jet but first aircraft. Maiden flight no landing gear hand launched on 3s with no problems and no scuffs on landing. Used the simulator for about a month before the maiden and I 100% know I couldn’t get away with the way I went about it with any other jet but your all’s guidance was crucial, thank you!!

    I bought this one for my son (that time 10 years old). He was exercising before with drones. This plane was exactly the right one to start with planes. We had 2 serious crahes, but it was easy to fit. Using 2 component glues (e.g. UHU plus 5 min). We bought a much better recharge unit and a stabilizer and stronger accus. He is now nearly 12 and fliying expert mode. The only bad construction is the landing gear. On gras we had many problems with it and reorder spare parts several times. Even the nose gear boke out completely with the frame. But I can absolutly recommend this plane for beginners. And you'll have a lot of fun. Even here in Germany. 😊

    Another great video. I will be watching the unboxing right after these comments.
    Late last night I asked your recommendation for a good first EDF jet for a pilot with some experience. This and the Habu SS were your recommendation. Thank you.
    At soon to be 65, this jet on 3S and 4S appears to be enough to satisfy my flying likes. So I’d have to lean towards this STS over the SS.
    Thank you for your quick reply last night. It was laaaate when I posted my question. You have always been incredible with your help. I know late last Summer I was bugging you a lot before I purchased my 2000mm Beaver.
    All that you and Megan are doing for the sport is greatly appreciated. You both are a true blessing.

    Maidened mine tonight. If u watch all the vids on the Habu everyone says how it may be a great or the best trainer and stuff. This thing is by far the easiest plane I’ve ever flown. I started on a CG Eaglet 50 a few years ago 😜. No comparison. ...Delta Ray for our little playground area. No comparison. Seriously. I got maybe 4 minutes, cause never had to slow it down. It is so friggin easy to fly. I will definitely teach my little girls to fly on this one. One flight and I’m already searching for Habu mods lol!!

    Light on the wing! Holy cow! W/the mild wing sweep, "dogtooth" leading edge helping the stall characteristics (like on the Apprentice) & relatively thick airfoil, it makes a nice mellow jet.. I'd say it deserves a slotted flap upgrade, would make it a STOL jet kinda like a PC-24 or the straight wing Cessna Citations! Good stall characteristics + no percieved torque, no P-factor! So nice, while not being "too much" plane for beginners. Didn't see tip stall/ spin tendencies of swept wing/high aspect ratio(long skinny like Cub, Timber, etc) Bumper nose, lol! I might have to get one!

    Just got one, looking forward to flying this baby! Thanks Brian for your in-depth review, setup and flying fun for this plane and the hobby!
    BTW: The "between the sheets" banter between you and the wife are perfect.
    Few points to note for others: (1) Make sure the wing hard-points in the body for the wing screws is properly glued into place - mine were but other folks found this was a problem (missing glue - QC issue) and glued them back themselves. (2) You will need to trim the front wheel control horn back a bit to keep it from contacting the plastic housing that holds the servo or it will bind/catch and not work right. HH should use a shorter control horn or just trim it back at the factory. (3) The SMART battery will come without the auto discharge setting turned on - I always set mine to 48Hours (personal preference) to help keep the battery happy. I used the XBC1000 to do this but the new SMART chargers can also do this. (4) Other who fly this plane on grass field have noted grass debris getting sucked into the fan intake and causing real problems - check it often and keep it cleaned out if dirty. Happy flying!
    FWIW: Since it comes with the simulator, it would be a real good idea for new pilots to install it and practice a bit on the simulator with this plane BEFORE heading to the field for the first flight on this plane! This is my third plane in my stable (only one crash yet, minor fixes) and that is my plan.
    My planes: AeroScout S 1.1M RTF (relearned to fly on it), Conscendo Evolution 1.5M BNF and now the Habu STS RTF. I also have the DX6e radio.

      We're glad you enjoy the banter. We try to keep it "otherwise clean", but we don't want to be so prudish that we can't sneak in a laugh from time to time.
      yes to your points ;)
      Point 4 - As I say, keep your tip clean - This also apply to your intake and exhaust...and thrust tubes - LOL
      Your plane progression is good. You're on the way to flying anything you want! Keep at it!!!

    I just love your videos. You are an excellent pilot and your wife is an excellent camera person.
    You do a great job with the whole experience. I like how you typically start with the flight and then show the build, along with important details about the planes and electronics etc.
    I was wondering about the fact that to get safe to respond while holding the plane upside down, you need to give 25% throttle first. I discovered that by accident recently when I couldn’t get safe to apparently work while going over the plane in my kitchen. Then after giving some throttle I saw that it started working. That was on a BNF I have. However it isn’t necessary to activate safe with the throttle on another plane I have that was using a remote that wasn’t with the plane when I bought it. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it? I have an Aeroscout that I crashed so I purchased another one, a BNF version so I could use the stock remote. I didn’t have to bench test it with the 25% throttle thing first. Safe was working when I took off.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад +1

      "I was wondering about the fact that to get safe to respond while holding the plane upside down, you need to give 25% throttle first" - Firstly, this is not true. SAFE is on ALL the time that your SAFE Designation switch is in the SAFE position, while AS3X is only activated after you give 25% or more throttle. AS3X is stabilization, but SAFE operates off that same system.
      I hope this helps SOME. I don't mean to pick on your question, but rather to help you understand better how it's supposed to work. If you notice a deviation from this, you may have a problem.
      SAFE, on older planes defined LEVEL at power up (Upside-down plane would be qualified as the LEVEL position, and when you turn it on while flying along, the plane would try to find LEVEL)...this has changes since the early days of SAFE. NOW, the LEVEL is set at a different time (time of programming) and then will not initiate the whole plane until it's been brought within a few degrees of level (pitch and roll).

    Thanks for this video dude! Out of the things I've flown i have not done jets. Naturally a f16 or a10 is eye candy but like you said I would turn it into a hanger queen due to the stress of landings. Looks like this is the best route to take getting into jets.

      You got that right, ALTHOUGH, the A10 ( bit.ly/2P1i286 ) is a GREAT flying, and fairly "easy to land" jet ;)

And still didn't work then before I smashed it into pieces I order another Receiver and I got it all working now. And another wing and cone because it got missed up in shipping. But I was just about to take it out and try to learn to fly. And have a 4s 3200mah and 4s 4000mah charged and ready to go. And u said something about registering with the fda so now I have to try and figure out how to do all that. It's so much to try and learn by yourself with no 1 to help. I try and watch videos as much as I can but it's easier for me to have someone show me and I've got no 1 to help me. So everything I've done so fare is just trying it. But I feel like I've not got much time left and I feel like just giving up on the learning how to fly. But if u have a video or know anyone that does on how to do the registration I just tried and they are wanting to know stuff I don't know what they are even asking. I set account up but I can't figure out how to go about registering your plane to get the number

    Mine arrived today. It must have been a Monday at the factory. Wing bolt holes are not aligned (can't get both the span-wise bolts in, only one or the other), nose wheel linkages needed a complete redo. What should have been 15 minutes of assembly took hours. I'd send it back but Horizon wouldn't be able to do anything in under 3 weeks according to the email they sent me. I'll probably have to cut out one of the wing bolt fittings and re-install it in new foam. I expected better than this. Hope it flies well.

    I bought the NX8 last month and just bought the Habu STS PNP and all the stuff the RTR minus the Transmitter to get it going. About how long do you suggest a beginner stay in beginner mode? I know it's about your comfort level but I don't want to develop bad habits from staying in beginner mode to long.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 года назад +1

      SAFE will keep you from making massive mistakes, but if you're comfortable, I'd use it ONLY for help on landings, and when you wind yourself disoriented. Then you can make all the fun maneuvers, and just fly her how it feels good. I think the quicker you get OUT of SAFE, the better, but don't be afraid to use it when you want to have some piece of mind, or if it's really windy to help you get back to the ground. Don't let people try to rush you into doing it. It's 100% up to you. Now-a-days, you can have SAFE on almost any plane, so there's nothing stopping you from getting used to it, and taking FULL advantage of it's help.
      Good luck!

      I agree. I was super weirded out at Horizon's decision to offer a PNF on this plane...BUT...if they offered it BNF, there would be so much stuff included that really only makes sense in a RTF, if you ask me. I think they should just make a RTF, and a BNF with only an AR637TA.
      One of the interesting parts of working with Horizon Hobby is hearing their rationale for making some of these moves, and it's kinda crazy how tough it is to try to keep hobby enthusiasts happy. There's about 1000 different types of RC fanatics, and they do a pretty good job at keeping the masses at bay ;)

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  2 года назад

      The Habu STS (3S & 4S trainer) does if you add GPS option, which I don't recommend. This is the STS...the new 4S & 6S "Ev0" just has SAFE Select, so it's supports less options, since it would be a strange option for a more "advanced" RC pilot.
      I really suggest if you're having difficulty with orientation, get the sun BEHIND you...this is a HUGE part of the problem for most newer (and experienced) pilots. If you fly like I do, a lot of the time, you have to "wiggle" the plane to see what the orientation is, or just get lucky. This too, is another helpful trick. you can wiggle the lesser of dangerous controls...the ailerons or elevator...but just make sure you know for certain what your "out" will be BEFORE you try it. Remember - you can cut throttle and just slow the plane down to almost a crawl, if you need it with this plane.
      Keep at it, and you'll start to have a much easier time. This take TIME and some help from a good set of eyes, if you have this luxury. I had to by my eye-sight ;) LOL

      You probably want something like this... AR631 bprc.me/AR631 - AS3X & SAFE with limited telemetry + EXTERNAL Antenna (or get another from down below)
      You'll have everything but the stupid LAS (landing aid sensor) which is not necessary or all that helpful. Then you can follow along virtually ANY plane we've done that's PNP.
      You are not wrong that it's hard to setup, since the stock offering Rx is just plain WEIRD.

      NX8 would be a great platform for you to grow into, for sure...
      BUT if you want all the features, you pretty much have to buy the RTF.
      Here's what you need to get flying, but it's NOT going to be the "SAME" as the RTF, for your information....
      NX8 (Transmitter) - bit.ly/2Ji3vCA
      AR637T (Receiver) - bit.ly/3pW3u86
      Habu (PNF) - bit.ly/3ruXiEu
      4000mAh 3S 30C SMART Lipo - bit.ly/3htyd8J
      4000mAh 4S 30C SMART Lipo - bit.ly/2KDuTeS
      S2100 AC Dual Charger - bit.ly/3mUCtPG
      ...you will be very well served getting the NX8 now, but you might still find that it's cheaper to buy the RTF and then just get the 4S Battery at a later time, and consider upgrading just the Transmitter later on too.
      Habu RTF - bit.ly/2KYuDH9
      Keep in mind, this one comes with a cheaper charger, and a DXs, which WILL work, but not as good. It will however, be setup for almost immediate use, which is good for a beginner.

    Hey Brian, I'm inclined to agree with you about getting the SS rather than the STS, but, I'm still curious on just how big of a 4s battery will fit in the STS. I have a couple 5000mah 4S batteries that I use in my EC1500 cargo plane. I'm really not planning to do much 6S flying with an SS, so thrust reverse is the biggest advantage for me. The SS Habus are back ordered till January, but, my local hobby shop has an STS in stock and it's the earlier version with the extra goodies in the box, the dongle and the trainer edition of Real Flight. It's temping to grab it due to the extra value, if my 5000mah 4S batteries would fit.

    Could you show how to bind the controller to the usb dongle and setup real flight?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад +1

      Here's the BIZARRE trick...you must HOLD THE BIND BUTTON WHILE PLUGGING IT IN (So dumb, right?!?!?!) then the USB dongle will go into bind mode. This took me a bit to figure out. Then it's a matter of installing the ridiculous amount of software, only to need to download the applications, then finally, some years later, you will be able to fly using your "free" demo. It's a great demo, by the way, and being able to ding a REAL transmitter to the PC makes all the hassle (And there's a LOT) worth it.
      Also, the dongle will need to install windows drivers, and that takes a while + Internet connection too, FYI.
      I don't want you to wait for a video, caz I'm not going to make a video on the installation...WAY too many variables to share, and way too much "waiting around" and filling out forms with sensitive personal information. I MIGHT show a video of using it, thought some time. This is a COOL option to add into a RTF plane, but if you ask me, they ought to be including this in more planes ;)

    Mine arrived with “dings” in the wings and tail, and just wouldn’t fly right. Anything under 3/4 throttle and it wanted to nose dive. But,...Horizon Hobby stepped up and is sending me a brand new one. What do you think about adding flaps and/or retracts to it. Too heavy?
    ...just to update..2 months after ordering,...the new Habu arrived, but the tx wasn’t zip-tied, so it bounced around during shipping destroying the wing. Somehow two separate orders went in for a replacement wing and they arrived a day apart. BOTH had serious damage to the ailerons. I don’t know what to do!
    The wing that had the major damage has the best ailerons, so I’m seriously thinking about cutting them off and using them on the newest wing.
    btw, the replacement wings didn’t have any decals or electronics. I have to take the servos, push rods, and horns off the old wing and install them in a wing with no decals. RTF...not!

    Hi Brian I ordered one of these I am 50 years old and am just learning to fly do you have any advice for me thanks and keep promoting this stuff

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  4 года назад +3

      Advice part 1 - Be nice to yourself. Keep trying. You CAN do it. Fly the simulator a lot, but don't expect flying to be ANYTHING LIKE IT (even though it's a GOOD analog - you won't be having a heart attack the first few flights - LOL).
      When you crash, don't FREAK OUT and quit. Just fit it with tape and glue....you'll be fine...I've already screwed around and crashed mine into the house (off camera like an idiot - LOL), and it's in one piece, flying great still.
      Plan to destroy your plane in a few months. You will get another one and you will find that THAT one lasts longer ;) I have WELL over 100 planes, and they all have some "war wounds", at least the ones that are fun to fly.
      I say, "Be nice to yourself" as in, forgive yourself for making mistakes, BUT NEVER CRASH WITHOUT LEARNING SOMETHING!!! Crashing is, or can be expensive, and you WILL do it a lot, so don't beat yourself up. Just LEAN from EVERY one. This will make you a better pilot. If you find that you crashed, learn what happened. If you can, have a spotter that PAYS ATTENTION. Make sure they're LOOKING OUT for your flight path. When you're new, it's hard to keep eyes in FRONT of where the plane is going to be....it's east to track the plane, but you need to know your surroundings, so study the lay of the land for a WHILE before you try to fly. This will help a lot. Make sure you're NOT flying in a place like mine ;) It's way too tight to fly in a place like mine, for a total novice....get a bigger field, or a club preferably. With a club comes a bunch of club rules, BUT you might actaully find help too...some people at clubs are DICKS - plan on it. I don't do clubs for this reason, among others, BUT there are some GREAT people too. IF they treat you bad, RUN - find another place to fly. If they give you crap about being new - SCREW THEM...they were new too, but it's easy to forget how hard it really is when you're 25 years in. Get help when you need it, but my #1 advice - FLY A LOT. You WILL improve. Fly more, and you'll love it more. You will want to speed home to fly - I guarantee it. You will dream about it. You will be excited about it, like you haven't been excited about somethings, since you were a teenager, chasing girls (I know you think I'm full of BS, but let me know how right I was when you do).
      P.S. this plane may be "easier than the Carbon Cub S2" but it's still a very capable plane, and definatelly not as easy as the Sport Cub S UMX, so if you get cold feed, buy that and fly it in DEAD CALM conditions. It's less intimidating, but this one comes with a simulator for that plane too ;)
      Here's a short list for you, as a new pilot...all RTF
      Beginner Planes, short list...
      Habu STS 70mm RTF - bit.ly/3fRaLj7 (Sounds like you already got this one)
      Apprentice 1.5m RTF bit.ly/2CfTCBY
      Carbon Cub S2 1.3m RTF bit.ly/32UawRn
      Apprentice Mini RTF bit.ly/2B3VsoR
      Sport Cub S UMX RTF bit.ly/2OqnYUK
      You want this too, for repairs...
      Bob Smith Industries glue stuff...
      Kicker amzn.to/2CQf24D
      CA Med amzn.to/2D0x18i (This one isn't FOAM SAFE, but some of these beginner planes use a foam that works with it, and won't melt....BUT test it first, if you're unsure - it's cheaper is it's NOT foam safe, fyi)
      CA Med Foam Safe amzn.to/2E2l29z
      CA Thin Foam Safe amzn.to/2COE6sw
      Hobbyking.com Glue (this one is a MUST have, if you ask me)
      Mucilage bit.ly/3fdfzQp
      Horizon Hobby glue stuff...
      CA Foam Safe bit.ly/30UbDPL
      Kicker bit.ly/2PRd5Mm
      Like Mucilage bit.ly/30RNnh0
      Also get some good quality packing tape, and small office tape, that's CLEAR, and have that ON HAND. You will need it, and you want it ready. You'll understand after your first crash. You will be able to fix almost anything with this stuff...some of them are Duplicates, just for convenience, and price comparisons for you ;)

      @@BrianPhillipsRC What a lovely and informative reply.
      I have just ordered this jet, my first, on the basis of this video. I have very limited experience of prop driven, fixed wing flying based on small RTR's from china (XK A600 gave the most success).
      This will be my first foray into the more expensive category. I've also been sporadically flying helis for a while now and not had much success until the Blade 230sV2 (another reason why I wanted this jet, HH seem to do stabilization right) which has helped me learn and given me so much confidence.
      I really cant wait to get flying. Wish me luck ;)

    Any tips on how to charge the battery faster? It takes hours wot charge with the cables provided.

      Get one of these. They're expensive, but if you plan to stay in the hobby, you'll be making the purchase now, rather than later...

    Came across your channel by accident but LOVE how you explain things...wordy yes....but worth every minute. Learning on Apprentice STS and looking for a second plane. You make me want all of them but any thoughts? I too started on the Sport Cub S

      I also want all of them ;)
      If I'm not wordy, I don't know WHAT I am - LOL!!!
      Here's the short list of RTF planes by Horizon Hobby I've been pushing. They're all good for their own reasons, but I like to say, is it too much to get both (replace "Both" with "All of them" in this case - LOL)
      Habu STS 70mm RTF - bit.ly/3fRaLj7

    Hi Brian, I bought the Habu RTF. Really enjoy it. Question for you or maybe other owners. I have been experiencing radio brown outs while out guessing maybe 100-150 yards out with this kit. No response for about 5-10 seconds holding right stick and radio in air panicking....then all the sudden it comes back and makes turn. I didn’t think pcm radios would be susceptible to this? Very scary and has occurred multiple times. Have you experienced this? Also, habu was horribly factory trimmed. Put in EXP Mode, centered trims and adjusted surfaces flat with power on. Now switching to experience mode is seamless in air. Really concerned about drop outs. I’m assuming the DX6s has same output 2.4ghz pcm signal power as more expensive radios....or is this a cheapie rig? Internal Antennas look good though near all that noisey switching controller noise. Thoughts? Thanks, Paul Sacramento CA

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад

      I think you may be hitting the PANIC button. If you do, the plane will IGNORE your input while it "corrects". See if you can establish if this is in fact what's happening to you. If NOT, please get with Horizon Hobby. They need to help you get this resolved.
      I have NOT had this happen, and I wouldn't put up with it....to scary!!!
      That type of problem will end up in trouble, but I suspect HH will help you resolve the issue.

    You started to talk about using a 3s 3200 or smaller than 4000 battery then the chargers finished, were you just going to say the battery has to be all the way forward in the tray?

      Oh boy, I hate when I do this. I can't say for certain what exactly I was going to say. It's been some time since we filmed this video, so I'm not 100% sure. Very sorry!

    I don't know if you have any pull with Horizon but I purchased that exact same package but it didn't come with a instruction book for putting the plane together or one for the radio. No battery or charger and no Dongle with the RF simulator software !!!

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  10 месяцев назад

      I have to assume you ordered the wrong finish level, or the options changed from when this video was filmed.
      Can you call them up and ask. Their phone support is back up and running - THANK GOD!!!]
      Sorry for your issue, and I suspect they can help you get this resolved.

    • @jacobfischer

      The package has changed since the original - it is stated in the Needed to Complete section.
      It no longer comes with battery and charger in the RTF version, this I think has to do with FAA compliance. Also, the included RF dongle was a time limited offering, and is no longer included.

    So what I need in order to buy the plug n play version? What kind of receiver and transmitter plus battery and charger?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад +1

      If you get the RTF version you get everything you'll need, but if you get the PNF, it's a pretty in depth setup, just FYI. Also, for all the features, you'll need the crazy expensive Rx, but I'd put an AR637T OR an AR631...just my 2 cents

      Brian Phillips yea your telling me I put one in myAL37 and it took awhile to get it dialed in oscillated a lot on first flight and for some reason my flight modes weren’t working then I figured out that the as3x in function menu dose nothing for that RX only forward programming.

    Is it possible to make the HABU 6s powered? If so what all do I have to do and need to make it 6s powered? Wouldn't I just need a higher amp ESC?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад

      Probably not, but if you want to experiment, you'll probably have to replace the motor and ESC. I don't know what size for either, and would highly recommend against it. If you want to drop that kinda cash, just get the F-16 70mm or similar to get a better result.

    I was wondering if it would be better to run a 3s 5000mah or a for us 4,000 as far as flight time I'm guessing the 5000 3s would be better?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 года назад +1

      More mAh CAN yield more flight time, but your flight times will always be a balancing act between the added weight of a larger pack and the additional capabilities that comes with the weight.
      EDF's do take a lot more power to keep flying, but the pilot sets the pace. You can make a plane fly 1/4 to 1/3 longer with good throttle management .
      Gotta play with it and see where you land (pun intended - LOL)
