Do you have any opportunity to go check out how other tree climbers work? Theres obviously tricky climbing situations, but if you have the right gear and training, you might realize that the spikes were actually limiting your mobility in the tree. I don't know any professionals who spike on prunes.
Tree climbers where I live use spurs on most jobs. There's no opportunity for that unless I quit self employment and got a job at a large tree company. The competitions offer very little value. Maybe the expo has some good training. Other than that like I said I've never seen anyone do it.
