I just ordered myself one of these to play with. Haven't owned an RC car since when I was a kid in the 70:s, I'm more of a helicopter/FPV-drone/airplane kind of guy but a friend of mine had got himself an RC-car and after trying it out I thought I might want one too. I'm pretty confident that if it can survive the kind of abuse depicted on this video even for a while it should last a long time of my probably much less destructive driving. As a helicopter guy I have a habit of NOT crashing if I can avoid it as with helicopters it gets really expensive really quickly. :) I understand people have used these with 3S batteries even though it's not officially rated for that, I have a pile of 1600mAh 3S batteries from my drone hobby so I guess I'll be trying those at some time. Even if I'll never need the extra power I guess with less aggressive driving they will probably give a longer running time as they obviously have more energy. And as I have them anyway why not use them? I'm also thinking of installing FPV gear in the car as I already have spare components, it might be interesting.
Super sick w these are seeds and I'm amazed at how fast and strong they are not to mention the quality of the driving going on as they're slowly being destroyed but looking damn good in the process. I really appreciate you showing how to fix the many different parts and upgrades that can will happen general I think I found
Cool Video! That really took the bashing well in my opinion! It's cool you give advice how to make these much stronger!! I also have to agree the 16889A Pro is amazing! It's my go to when I want to just bash like heck and not break anything 🙂
Wow this truck is cool!! I just added to my mental list of options for a new car this summer- lol. Great video, very entertaining and informative as always!
I have a 903a ...I put a 3s in it and bashed it around...now my steering won't center. I'm new to all this. I've checked everything and it all seems to move ok. Can I put a regular servo in it or do I have to use a hbx?
Love you channel! I got an HBX 903A as a gift a few weeks ago and have been having a blast. I wasn't looking for a new hobby, but I am hooked. I am worried about all the bottoming out I do on jumps, the downward travel of the suspension exceeds the tire height. I was wondering if you had a link for those tire, I have no idea what to look for being a super noob. Also wondering if I can put 1:10 shocks on a 1:12 rc, since it seems next to impossible to find 1:12 on Amazon. That and I wouldn't know quality makes and models of tires/shocks if they bit me in the arse. Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!
Thanks!! These are the tires. I think they work real well. As far as the suspension in the 901a, I have not found a solution. It’s an odd size and the 1:10 shocks I’ve tried do not fit right. Especially in the front. Not the best news but hopefully helpful!
That is some great advice, not sure if you meant it or not but it seems the 16889A pro version is a much better choice for those who do jumps, tricks and flips with their truck. It seems much more durable and I only recommend the 901A for those who clearly are not interested in your style of bashing. It should do well just bashing the grass and sand with no frequent high jumps because of its size and clearance. that said backflip is the thing in my bashing so no 901A for me.
Yup I agree. The 901s just doesn’t handle the jumps as well. Small ramps and ground bashing it should be great. Even with larger tires it won’t backflip. Front flips ok though. You have to double tap the trigger to get it all the way around though.
I didn’t want to talk about the 16889a pro too much cuz we already did that comparison video, but those two ramp slams were worth showing! But what you said is basically exactly what I mentioned in that comparison video👍👍
A lot of good information! Thanks for that!! Which components are the same in the two vehicles? And what are those upgrade rims and tires on the 901A? Thank you in advance & best regards from Germany...🏁

I actually have a comparison video on those two (if you haven’t seen it). They don’t share many parts. The 901a is quite a bit bigger. ruclips.net/video/Tfk10ojkm7c/видео.html
Awesome video man! What is the size of the upgraded wheel/tires you're running? We have the Bezgar HM124 which is a rebrand of the HBX 901A. I'm not crazy about the tires either. I'm hoping in April we get some decent RC weather in Maryland! I'm currently living vicariously through videos. lol

Great videos on hbx products as always 😃. I cant seem to find the upgrade metal center shaft for this model, and cant use the metal spur without the upgrade (like the 16889), i want the vanguard variant of this but doesnt have all the metal upgrades, does this truck have the same body posts as the grozz truck? Does the grozz or vanguard body fit without modification?
Thanks! The chassis is the same, so I believe the center shaft for the hbx 901a would fit the vanguard 903. I’m pretty sure the body posts are the same, you just need to adjust the height of them (easy). I’ll try to verify tomorrow. Feel free to send me a reminder 🤣. The only other thing to do for the body, I believe, is you would have to remove the wing from the chassis or make a cutout for it in the 903 body.
Love your videos! I have a Hbx 903a, bought it for my 13yr old son and he loves it. It has held up well, we been bashing it for about a month, yesterday we noticed the spur gear is loose on the center shaft. It is sliding back and forth causing the pinion to slip on hard acceleration. Have you seen this? What do I need to order to fix it? There r two options on Amazon, one with a spline cut center that slides over the end of the input gear and one that looks like a pin or set screw holds it on. Which one do I need? Thank you in advance for your help.
If I remember right, mine was sliding back and forth too but I didn’t have any slipping issues. You may be able to loosen the set screw on the motor shaft and slide the pinion gear closer to the spur gear. I can’t remember which spur gear it has though lol. My 901a is currently disassembled along with a couple more cars with all the parts sitting in one pile, next to both types of spur gears. Hopefully that helps though!
@@DerbyCityRC thank you, I wasn't sure if it was supposed to b moving, the slipping could b the rear diff. There doesn't seem to b a way to adjust the mesh, I ground off some of the plastic where the front of the motor mounts so it would fit tighter. It is still makes one or two good pops if you accelerate too hard tho. I'm gonna try to pull the driveshaft out and see what's going on with it and maybe the rear diff as well. What should i look for on the rear diff that could b causing that clicking?
Usually of the diffs are clicking, you’ll be able to see gears worn down. In my experience it’s usually the pinion or ring gear but could always be a spider gear inside. Hope you find it!
I actually put these exact tires on my h16bm:ruclips.net/video/GeqvI9Of6C4/видео.htmlsi=06krMvv8a9Ojbdpe I believe I have them linked in the description.
@DerbyCityRC I have the stock 2995 currently on the front and the 903 tires on the back. Seems to run more stable if you can keep the front down.....cracked the 2995 wheels on the back which is why I tried the 903s....thanks for the link...
Yeah… definitely an improvement for sure! Love those bigger wheels and tires you installed on this. Much better than those other big tires. Where did you get them? Sick spinning jumps from Mr. Max👍🏻, and that double car jump was a wild attempt! Almost had it!🤣These things are gonna break with the abuse you give them, and hold up surprisingly well for you guys. As always brother, great, entertaining and informative video! UDA 💣💥👊🏼😊
Thanks! Those tires are from Amazon. I’ll get you a link if you want them! Ya Max is killing it for sure! The better we get at landing, the less breakage we will have!! 👍👍 Thanks as always!!
@@DerbyCityRC No problem! Another fun one is the Xinlehong 9125! Under $100, I've ran it on 3s since unboxing. Strapped a 3200mah on it, The ESC can take it, the dogbones are thick, shocks are crap and motor gets hot after a bit but totally worth the price. Love your videos man. 👍👍👍👍
Thx for not giving up on the 901a but trying to make it great 🤘 Could I ask you to explain a little bit more, for a rc noob like me, how shorter front shocks would help with bouncing? Cause as you pointed out, it has poor travel in front. I thought the car looked a lot wilder in this video compared to the last one. Was that all sure to the new (stock) ESC you put in our does it wheelie a lot more due to better traction with wider tyres? Cause you only ran 2s batteries in this video, right? Cheers!
You’re welcome lol. I have another plan for it soon lol!!! I think the tires made it wilder for sure. Better traction and larger. That car comes with shorter shocks, so since I used some longer ones, they have longer “bodies” too so that really decreased the amount of travel they have. Using ones that are already shorter are designed for that and will have better travel capabilities lol. Hope that makes sense! Yup this video was all 2s!
@@DerbyCityRC I think s get it, at least makes sense in my head now 🤔 So I choose this car over the 16889aPro mostly since I wanted a larger scale car than 1/16. My 5,5yo girl has a 1/14 and I've felt that a slightly larger would fit the type of terrain I'll drive the most. Mainly in my backyard that has a decently well cut lawn but also some roots and dirt and pine cones. Will also put out my adjustable mountainbike jumps. I don't know if they're really good for jumping an rc, but if they are, the cool thing is that they told up as an backpack. Clearly over engineered for RC bashing and expensive like heck..but check them out at mtbhopper.com if it sounds interesting. I have two of the MTB Hopper Lite so it would be fun if I could gap jump between them. While I'm already writing an essay...I need to confess that in second guessing my choice of the 901a after a guys on your forum completely trash talked it since it doesn't have a central diff. I don't now how Banggoods return policy works here from Sweden. But if it's not a huge loss sending it back I might go with the HBX 2995 or the Flyhal fc610 instead. I understand that the 16889a pro is one of the toughest there is in this price range but I don't want to constantly tip over cause I hit a pine cone or twig or turn in a small slope. Do you have a preference for the style of driving I'm describing between the 2995 or the fc610 or do you have a completely other suggesting. I'm thinking a budget around 100-200$ with potential mods. I did like that the 910a was brushless and more it of the box, but the idea of modding the 2995/fc610 mostly sounds appealing and like half of the fun..
I don’t think the 901a is a bad choice. I’ll check those ramps out, they sounds pretty awesome. Yes he trash talked all cars without a center diff, and he has a point, the diffs take a lot more pressure without one. I do think the 2995/fc610 is much more durable and has better handling than the 901a, but it’s also a bit slower out of the box. I believe you could get one of those, and keep it under $100 in upgrade parts. I used closer to $200 on mine, but here is some cheaper stuff: (Next comment)
Btw, word on those tires, found them on amazon, definitely good quality, and look awesome on my flyhal (hbx 2995). I still havent bought this truck yet though, its the price... even the brushed version with no metal upgrades still costs more than the flyhal variant of the hbx 2995, and doesnt have oil shocks... this might be the only hbx model i skip... 😔 EDIT: the oil shocks that come with the bezgar hm101/flyhal fc610 are literally larger versions of the 16889 shocks, they should fit the 901 perfectly, and universal with standard 1/10 shock parts.
That’s good to know. I may try to find me a set of those shocks! Glad you like the tires! The 901a has its place for sure, but I don’t necessarily blame you for skipping it. Lol
Dude. You have got to throw a little cement on the edge of that flag stone where you smash into every video. It was at the 7:10 point in this video too! 🤣 It will save you loads of money in the long run. 👍
That’s a tough question. I have more fun with the 901a, but the 16889a pro is more durable. I actually have a comparison video on both of those cars from about two weeks ago. I definitely recommend you check that out👍👍
Yes they are both tough! The 901a should be amazingly tough if you don’t jump it like we do and watch out for things like curbs, which will easily hurt any RC. I have a link and coupon code in this video’s description if you decide on the 901a! I have yet to see it cheaper than that!
i think for that type of abuse you need something like an armma or a xmax...love this cheaper rcs but we have to keep in mind they were not designed for high jumps on concrete.
Oh trust me, I know. However I’d say my Kraton breaks just as much plus costs more to repair. Luckily the repairs are part of the fun for me. Plus the more I increase my landing skills, the less breakage I’ll have! If that ever happens 🤣
Lol ya the shocks break easy on this thing. I actually don’t like those shocks on this car. I haven’t found a good set of shocks yet. They do work well in the rear, but the fronts actually need to be shorter. I’m planning on trying the shocks from the WL toys 144001 on the front. They might be perfect.
@@DerbyCityRC They snap way to easy and it's hard to find a 1/12 scale shocks that would work well for this. I don't want to run stock again with how poor the front preformed.
Ya the thing is, the front suspension uses the same shocks as the hbx 16889a pro 1/16 scale. The rears do too, but they have an extra spacer to give it a higher ride height. So really need 1/12 shocks for the rear but 1/16 or potentially 1/14 scale for the front. The control arms in the front don’t have enough flex in the hinge )or the axle) to extend the fronts with 1/12 scale shocks. So weird how they developed that car
@@DerbyCityRC I think I'm gonna go the Wl toys 144001 route I was looking at them before you replied (your reply gave me extra confidence in them) and I measured everything out and with a few modifications I think they will work. And hey if they aren't the best beats my front end dragging with no suspension and I'll be able to rip again. This time maybe I won't send it flying 20 ft in the air at a concrete skate park but it was fun so who knows hahaha!
Nice! Let Me know how it works cuz I’ll be trying it soon too. Ya the 901a isn’t the most durable HBX, but it’s one of the fastest cheaper out of the box cars!
Hey man I've just got a hbx 901a and i would like some help if you can. Would you recommend aluminium parts for upgrade? Can you give me some links where to find parts for my rc because in banggood i find only few parts. Is the 901a parts same with another rc model to search for?? And where you find the larger wheels and the spacers?? Thank you in advance!!!!! Great videos you make 👌👌👌
I would not recommend aluminum parts as they can break other more expensive parts easier. The parts you can’t find on Banggood will be on Amazon or Haiboxing-hobby.com These parts also fit the 903a. These are the tires: amzn.to/49RyADf Glad you like the videos!!
@@DerbyCityRC I kept breaking drive shafts and broke 2 of screws that holds the wheels on. Also striped the plastic bevel gear. And now the esc is cutting in and out and it has lost so much power it’s slow now probably happend after running it on 3s. I bought it because I seen all the good reviews on RUclips everybody was saying how durable it was well the one I got is not durable I even run it lightly and carefully and still all that happend lol 😂
Lol you must have gotten a dud. I always show what breaks in my videos too. I haven’t broken an axle, but I have had those screws break off a couple times. No esc issues but we’ve only done 3s once so far. Should get the PRO version!
Nice vid man. I have nearly the same setup minus the the shocks and wheel spacers. But I have the same exact wheels which really bring the car to life. Because the car has a lot of torque and gets up to speed quick, to get it to back flip, you have slow roll to the ramp and accelerate through the transition. You won’t get big air back flips (unless at a skate park) but it’ll do it. I also experienced the same drive cup breakage and now some tooth wear on the bevelled gears. Still a super fun bit though. Cheers!
Thanks! Awesome! I agree with you on the backflip. When I was first learning that was the only way I could do one. That’s good to know, I should have tried it this time! Ya it sucks that this cups break so easy (not that I didn’t give it hell lol), when all their other cars handle this stuff almost perfectly!
My hbx 901a is almost brand new, it was working perfectly, but suddenly it doesn't respond any more, what might be wrong?? Is there any suggestion that might help?? What shall i do to know what exactly the malfunction, please i need your help
Damn bro, this rc car would last me a lifetime lol, the way you and some others drive them even the verry best rc car won't last a hour right ?, take a real car and hit a cement gutter with it just once at high speed and that cars suspension is a write off right there, so these toy rc cars are realy tuff and will never break under normal driving use imo, buying a rc car online using hard earned cash, then waiting a few weeks for it to arrive only to destroy it in one hour of getting it is not what I call fun lmao😅, it won't be long before you got a whole bunch of cars that are all broken and be using whatever you can reclaim from all that junk to build up another car only to destroy that withing a hour too ??? 👀,, "hey its your cash so its up to you only how you use it" but for people like myself who find it difficult to even afford one of these cool cars, it's realy a shame and a terrible waste and heart breaking to see somthing that would bring yrs of joy just get destroyed for one hour of pleasure 👀, damn lol, I'm trying to buy one now and want to see what's best and videos like this do help but they always leave me kinda speechless at just how destructive most people can be for a moment of fun lol, anyway peace from South Africa brother ✌
So you understand the point. I purposely drive recklessly so you and others can see how they handle abuse. Other cars handle it better than this one, and a lot of people now know there’s a better option because of this video. Plus they’re all repairable and I like fixing them. It is all fun!
@@DerbyCityRC yes I do understand your goal and it does give a buyer a good insight as to what he can expect but it still just breaks my heart lol 🤣✌, and a 1/10 scale would handle those cement edges better but are just too high for the 1/12 scale and certainly it'll break the car verry quickly, I meant to say thank you also for doing this for people but I also feel sorry for ur pocket lol, it must be pretty costly 👀, I'm just a person who realy looks after my stuff so don't mind me bro, as long as its not mine I don't care what you do with it, no offense at all my friend, was just thinking aloud I guess ✌😜✌

Actually I’ve thought about that one before, but forgot about it. I’ll look into it again. Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!!
Awesome, I’ll look into that one too!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoy them!!
@@DerbyCityRC I think s get it, at least makes sense in my head now 🤔
So I choose this car over the 16889aPro mostly since I wanted a larger scale car than 1/16.
I used closer to $200 on mine, but here is some cheaper stuff:

@@DerbyCityRC This is very much appreciated, thank you so much for taking the time! I'm subbed and ready to bash the like button 👍
EDIT: the oil shocks that come with the bezgar hm101/flyhal fc610 are literally larger versions of the 16889 shocks, they should fit the 901 perfectly, and universal with standard 1/10 shock parts.
That’s good to know. I may try to find me a set of those shocks!
Glad you like the tires! The 901a has its place for sure, but I don’t necessarily blame you for skipping it. Lol
What tires are those? Do you have the Amazon link.
Here ya go!

Dude. You have got to throw a little cement on the edge of that flag stone where you smash into every video. It was at the 7:10 point in this video too! 🤣 It will save you loads of money in the long run. 👍
Lol. Actually I put some dirt there right after this video lol.
That amazing clump of mud will be featured in the next video 🤣🤣
@@DerbyCityRC Can't wait to see this amazing piece of dirt.
It’s incredible! One of a kind!
Awesome bro 👍 fun bashin 👊
Thanks man!
I was wondering where you get most of your replacement parts? Ty.
A few different places actually. Amazon if they have what I need, Banggood.com, Haiboxingtoys.com and Haiboxing-hobby.com are the most common.
this or HBX 16889A Pro? which one do you suggest for my first RC? please reply
That’s a tough question. I have more fun with the 901a, but the 16889a pro is more durable. I actually have a comparison video on both of those cars from about two weeks ago. I definitely recommend you check that out👍👍
@@DerbyCityRC will it be durable with no or little bashing and just running it around?
Yes they are both tough! The 901a should be amazingly tough if you don’t jump it like we do and watch out for things like curbs, which will easily hurt any RC.
I have a link and coupon code in this video’s description if you decide on the 901a! I have yet to see it cheaper than that!
What king of grease did you use on the plastic gears?
All the gears in this truck are metal. But the stuff I used in this video was this stuff.
amzn.to/3qSLgWR
i think for that type of abuse you need something like an armma or a xmax...love this cheaper rcs but we have to keep in mind they were not designed for high jumps on concrete.
Oh trust me, I know. However I’d say my Kraton breaks just as much plus costs more to repair. Luckily the repairs are part of the fun for me. Plus the more I increase my landing skills, the less breakage I’ll have! If that ever happens 🤣
actually look at how well the 16889A pro takes the abuse. Great truck for those stunts.
Hi there! What kind of oil goes in hbx 16899 shocks ?
I’ve tried 50 wt and 80 wt. both are better than stock oil. If you do heavy jumps like I do, the 80 worked better 👍👍
Do you know any bigger batteries that I can put in?
I have not yet tried to find any that fit in the tray. I will look for some soon!
What are these shocks? Just bashed mine hard today broke both front shocks and a little more haha
Nice! Let
Me know how it works cuz I’ll be trying it soon too. Ya the 901a isn’t the most durable HBX, but it’s one of the fastest cheaper out of the box cars!
Which Tyres did you use?
I used these right here: amzn.to/3S2wMiq
Thank you
You’re welcome!
wheel spacers link pls
These are the ones I use 👍

Hey man I've just got a hbx 901a and i would like some help if you can.
Would you recommend aluminium parts for upgrade?
Can you give me some links where to find parts for my rc because in banggood i find only few parts.
Is the 901a parts same with another rc model to search for??
And where you find the larger wheels and the spacers??
Thank you in advance!!!!!
Great videos you make 👌👌👌
I would not recommend aluminum parts as they can break other more expensive parts easier. The parts you can’t find on Banggood will be on Amazon or Haiboxing-hobby.com
These parts also fit the 903a.
These are the tires: amzn.to/49RyADf
Glad you like the videos!!
@@DerbyCityRC thank you!!!!!
Have a nice day!!!!
Had nothing but problems out of my ravage
That’s surprising. Those are rather tough in most cases!
Yes, 1st comment! Great vid btw 👍
Haha! Good job!
Thanks man!! 😉👍👍
Does the steering operate? Does the car beep when you turn on the esc?
@@DerbyCityRC no nothing, the only thing works is the lights no response whatsoever
I don't think the problem is mechanical, the car is in a perfect shape, is there any way to check the ESC??
@@DerbyCityRC no beep sound
So when you hold down the button on the car to turn the esc on, you get no noise, and only a light? Which light?
@frednel4326 I hear ya man and appreciate it!
It’s certainly not easy on the pocket book and I don’t go super crazy in every video lol. This one is nearly 2 years old 😃
