  • The HBX 16889a Pro is definitely one of the best bashers out of the box. It’s loads of fun and is super durable, but one of its flaws is that it is hard to whip around in the air with its light tires. Let’s see if we can find a fix!

I am running the Surpass hobby 35A ESC and 2440 4600kv motor and since last week I am running 1/16 Louise ST Pioneer and I love then. They are about 10mm bigger in diameter as the original and I can notice the extra top speed. The grip is great, had to turn down the punch level to avoid backflips at little throttle. Great little truck!

I am a huge fan of HBX. I took your recommendation and got a 2995. It rips as is. I love the way it handles. I did get bigger tires and a brushless HW set up. The same one you got. My car came with oil filled shocks. I already blew one apart. I am going to play with it more as is, before I swap the motor. I may use the 550 and esc transmitter from the 2995 in my Wltoy 12427. I have a dynamite 550 in it now. Thanks for the videos!! Keep bashing!!

I was surprised that it had oil shocks. Not much oil in them. I went back and watched your video again. The shocks that came on yours are completely different. I got blue aluminum with caps that unscrew. Like I said not much oil though. Maybe HBX upgraded the new ones. I like this car. Out of the box. It is way better than the Wltoys 12428.

Hey man, new here, can't stop watching your videos. Just bought my First car is a 16890a. Upgraded the wheels and have modeled it after this one basically. I destroyed the rear diff and the spur gear. Do you think I was just punching it too hard? I haven't put it through nearly as much. Now waiting on parts. Love how you include the kiddos in everything! Keep up the influencing.

    • @DerbyCityRC
      @DerbyCityRC  4 месяца назад +1

      Hey man, and thanks!!
Yes the harder punches will destroy the gears much quicker, however, I’m a hard puncher too and they lasted me quite a while. Landing jumps while still on the trigger is the biggest gear killer so practice letting go of the trigger no matter what before landing. And of course the bigger the tires, the harder on the gears and you want to be extra careful. Hope this helps!!

Awesome man that’s so cool to hear!
Main things to do would be to check for screws/wheel nuts that have loosened.
Definitely not a bad idea to grease all the gears inside the differential but these hold up very well. These little cars are very low maintenance, so otherwise just check for damage each time and fix whenever necessary, which shouldn’t be very often, especially if you’re easier on them than I am.

Shoe goo or CA glue instead of tape. It can be removed by soaking in acetone. I’ve only removed broken ESC’s so I don’t know if acetone is safe for working ESC’s. Not as convenient as tape, but it holds. It’s the only thing that would hold on my Arrma Granite.

I'm trying to figure out an alternative solution for those front dogbone / axle pins. I've already started ordering packs of 400 thumbtacks for 3 bucks which I heat up the pin and pull it out of the plastic then trim the pin to length. I was experimenting with making a pin that would lock in place without the need for those springs as I've been losing a pin about every time I tumble this thing a few times. I'm using trimmed down nails for wheel hex pins. Fun little truck for sure at the skatepark, in tall grass I was desiring a bit more though and ordered an Mt10 after debating between the Granite. This hobby ended up being more fun than I anticipated, makes for a good duo with RC drifting, which was my first RC / build. :)

So I just mounted exactly the same big tires. Now the crash damping servo arm is giving in because the turning of the wheels requires to much force.

Are the spacers easy to install? When I do finally order a 16889A Pro, I'll probably order those 1/10 tires you linked (unless you can recommend a different set that is as or more budget friendly) and the spacers. If the spacers involve much more than just removing the stock wheels and screwing them on, it might be over my current knowledge LOL. I would probably install the factory 1/16 tires on my daughter's 18858 1/18. I wonder if those 903 tires would break my son's base model 16889? If I'm not mistaken, the 16889 is the same as 16889A, the "A" has a brushless motor as an upgrade? Meaning 16889A Pro (brushless & metal drivetrain) > 16889A (brushless + plastic drivetrain) > 16889 (brushed + plastic drivetrain)

Those stock tires would probably work well on the 18858. And I still really like those tires I linked for it.
The spacers are easy, though I can’t remember if I needed to drill the hole in the middle of the wheel out to allow the elongated nut to fit through it. Also, use a little loctite on the nut or they like to spin off sometimes. And yes you have that correct about the 16889 gang!! 🤣

Oh so you probably don’t have the pro version. The 16889a and the 16890 use plastic axles with a screw, while the 16889a pro has the metal ones with nuts.
I’d your rear axles are already metal (which sometimes they are) then these guys here should be all you need to make it work on the rear. amzn.to/3Yydkxn

I believe it’s this video here where I show what I did for mine. Basically put a little rubber spacer in it. ruclips.net/video/iGRHnO78p5I/видео.html

My girl keeps asking me what I want for my birthday and I'm trying to decide between this, the 18th scale hbx pro version, or possibly the 901a HBX. Something tells me to go with this since I loved it so much and I'm going to get the upgraded shocks, gears and brushless but I'm also thinking the 18th scale version will be brutally tough at the skatepark but as far as just looks that desert buggy looks the best.
You probably made the right choice with the Rival MT over the Redcat but I just am absolutely in love with my Redcat because it's brutally tough and handle so well but with the Rival you'll get a Center differential... and if you go back and look at the killer off-road hobby RUclips channel and how much brutality he put the Helion Avenge through it does seem pretty awesome. I actually had the Helion Avenge a few years ago when it first came out but got rid of it too soon because I had so many RCs. The Helion Avenge became the Rival Mt but the Helion body looked a lot better.
It would be a pretty fair assessment from years of research to say that the Rival MT is the king but the Redcat A arma are tougher but the Granite is the fastest out the box.

Anyway, 5 16889A pros with different bodies ordered to help differentiate at dusk till super dark with headlights running. All upsized 1:10 scale wheels, couple had 15mm spacers the others we did not put spacers. Added two heat sinks to aid in non stop action and just keep swapping fresh batteries.
After about 90 minutes of trying to destroy these trucks with five kids from 13 to 20 years old, the worse issues we had:
    1. Batteries falling out often as we beat them senseless
    2. Two trucks have some body breakage on the front end
    3. One trucks ESC came loose from the two sides tape and was slipping between the steaming arm and chassis to restrict steering, nothing three small zip ties couldn’t fix in a minute.
90 minutes of launching these things from 3’ to 15’ flipping in the air to land in the bottom of a 10’ half pipe… some were really bad falls… one of which caused the Esc to break loose as noted. Otherwise they are all just fine and ready for more!!!!!

Yes the springs may help. Something to consider with shock weight though, is that these shocks are likely not built to the tolerances that a higher end brand is.
