If thoroughbred racing and those that partake in it interest you, you might enjoy First Mount, a short novelette that I read recently about a young jockey’s travails at making the weight to get his first ride and what he’s willing to endure to get it.
The great hurdler Sea Pigeon is one of my favourite horses. John Francome's ride on Sea Pigeon's second Champion Hurdle lives long in the memory. And I've never forgotten what Francome said when he jumped off him in the winners enclosure. 'He's a Rolls Royce of a horse !'
It's true. NH racing will never be the same after Francome's retirement. The same applies to him leaving his racing presenter's job. When he was around you could depend on him taking the piss outta Emma Ramsden and Big Mav and it was always worth waiting for. The best NH jockey in the bloody world and if he hadn't made it as a jockey he would have made it big time as a comedian. An entertainer and a top man. Good luck John.
Re: John Francome Many years ago I remember watching 'The Morning Line', Channel 4 Racing's Saturday morning racing preview show. The great Derek Thompson was presenting and somehow they got chatting about angling. So Derek Thompson turned to John Francome and Thompson said 'So John, what do you get when you dip your rod in ?' Quick as a flash Francome replied 'Well about six months I should think !'. Thompson collapsed in hysterics.
This is like a history of racing from 1950's, it's a small world, think I met or mixed with most of these guys. John was so stylish, no one else rode like him. He's still around the racing industry, good man.
I saw him arrive and I saw him go. Yeah a rare talent and none better at presenting a horse at a fence, I suspect that was his childhood showjumping days.
I remember watching ch4 racing and mcririck was munching on an ice cream and francome walked past an shoved it in his face live on TV...it was brilliant 👏..
anyone who is a John Francome fan should read his book called Born Lucky, John your sense of humour is pure class mate, especially the Scunthorpe joke lol
John francome supreme horseman and pure natural ability , his show jumping background helped to deliver a horse on the perfect stride at every hurdle and fence , if there was one slight negative i didnt think he was the strongest in a tight finish in that era i would always prefer some one like the cumbrian jockey on my side john jo oneil.
Apologies ,the matter was mentioned and Banks warned off and Francome suspended for 6 weeks, but these events do not help the public's opinion of racing and its respectability.
Greatest jump Jockey and the most stylish to sit on a horse,TOTAL LEGEND miss you and the others from Ch4 as wellracing pre-woke days, halcyon days 👏👍💥❤️

I don't recall that Francone would beat up his horses. AP was sent back to racing school to teach him how to use the whip!. The fact that Francome was Junior European show jumping champion meant he really understood the importance of presenting a horse at a fence. He was the best! Great shame that he never won a GN, Came close on Rough and Tumble but not close enough. I checked the records, in five Nationals he did not get a mount which is extraordinary. Not even on a no hoper, although with a talented rider even an outsider with a low weight can surprise and run into a place at long odds.
Rubbish. That's your view and McCoy by comparison with Francome. McCoy rode a lot of winners, that's all. But there are at least 10nh jockeys who are better jockeys and race riders than him. He's not good enough to hold Francome's saddle for him.
Thanks to whoever put this on, I had it on VHS years ago, this man is the best ever, I've never seen a better jockey over a fence.
Absolutely fantastic documentary/film. Regards, Paul
Great man really missed on tv superb rider great broadcaster and punter my hero
he was so stylish.....all the other jockeys from that period look like Andy Thornton clones
His ride when winning the Champion Hurdle on the great Sea Pigeon was a masterpiece and unforgettable . Great jumps jockey..
Thanks for the upload. Absolutely fantastic!
Glad you enjoyed it!

I have this on video, but haven't seen it since 1997 - absolutely wonderful. Thank you
You're very welcome

He was great but not as good as Fred Winter or Stan Mellor.

Watch Stan Mellor and his boss Fred Winter all great.

Yes Mac was right, he is the greatest jockey. Great narration by Brough Scott.
Another great legend
THE Greatest Jump Jockey of all time , John was just such a super horse man i place him ahead of A.P
Keep up the good work! Any videos of channel 4 coverage circa 2004?
Yes, soon
John Francome hope you are doing fine and your new project is going well

Is he riding Brown Trix????
No mention of the ride he gave to a horse called "Stopped" owned by a bookie called John Banks when favourite for a big handicap at Sundown.

Enjoyed this, would take JF over McCoy any day of the week.
Saw both Francombe and Eddery as kids and inate horsemanship was evident... but one must have luck and play the game to get on.
What was it with those mullets in the 80s
Uncle Bing was the 1980 Topham winner

ap not in a distance near to francine
Looked absolutely cool on a horse
the GOAT
Mrs Francome .. " Everyone is calling John to book him to ride their horses and its so annoying " WTF !!!! . Big him up , not kick him down.
They eventually divorced
A very selfish lady
Great jockey

Richard Dunwoody to me the most stylish and my No 1
GREAT JOCKEY BUT WASNT STYLISH
we all have our own version
Un believable jockey
Francome would have won on Combes Ditch
The Greatest Jockey

I went to school with Charlie. He was an embryo cad then. His elder brother Christopher we nick named him Bubbles was a very decent fellow. 😁
