It's a fact that since Lester retired the racing world has never been the same. We could always spot Lester in a race of 30 runners and No one could ride a finish like the great man. He won many a race on horses that any other jockey would have lost on. That was the genius of the man. The king lives. Long live the king.
When Lester was jailed for tax evasion he refused to go in his cell. They had to blindfold him, turn him round three times and back him into his cell. 🤣🤣🤣
I was lucky to see Lester.Pigott ride at the Mahalaxmi racecourse in Mumbai sometime in the 1990's.I had taken my mother along to the racecourse to witness a once in a lifetime horse racing occasion .I had bet his horse "Clarke Gable" a outsider for "Place Money" and sure enough neither the horse nor Lestor.Pigott disappointed the betting public who placed their money on him by "WINNING" let alone "PLACING".I still remember this race as if it happened yesterday with Lestor Pigott zooming past the front runners from the extreme outside facing the railbirds fence.
Piggot on Nijinsky,racing doesn't get any better than that,you will never see the likes again. Brigadier Gerard was another fantastic horse from that era.
Don't be silly. There was great professional rivalry between them, but never any hatred. Both of them knew they were only as good as the horse they were riding.

The Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, he was riding the Derby winner Teenoso, just before the race, Teenoso's head went backwards hitting Lester in the face. He won the race with blood streaming down his face and imparing his vision..it was a skilled piece of riding. As was his victory later that year in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. again on Teenoso, beating Willie Carson on Sun Princess who at the time had the won the Oaks by a record distance, Sadler's Wells ridden by Pat Eddery ,Time Charter, winner of the race the previous year and the Oaks in 1982..a very strong field of runners Lester led from the beginning and was only briefly behind for a period before taking the lead from 2 furlongs out. That was a quality field ,.This victory was Lester giving a masterclass in riding and tactics. I remember at the time watching and cheering him on, bought a smile to my face. . Lester could bring the best out of horses, he also knew the courses intimately ,especially Epson which is why he won the Derby 9 times. I won't mention the jockey as he was one of my favourites after Lester, but in the 80s ,he had the favourite for the Derby the horse was class but, the jockey rode a poor race , wrong tactics and got well beaten. So not just a case of your only as good as the horse you were riding
In his earlier days Piggott favoured a hold-up ride. But it was noticeable as he got older that he realised the advantages of waiting in front, or waiting prominently. His earlier tactics were often successful, of course, but sometimes unnecesary. He held up Piney Ridge in the National Stakes at Sandown and brought him with a late run and just got up. But given that horse's stamina, he would arguably have won more easily if made more use of. Piggott's later style is more intelligent, and comparable with Dettori's. Dettori's mastery of tactics explains his high proportion of wins. Jockey's addicted to hold-up rides, whatever the character of their mount or the requirements of the race, should be avoided!

A purely selfish, arrogant and self centred man who went to the top stepping on anyone. Met him a few times not my cup of tea but I probably wasn't his. He got his comeuppance via the revenue and he wasn't that tough. Geoff Baxter a throughly decent jockey and man called him out for what he was and flattened him. While Lester was expecting his valet to protect him. Please remember his self centred riding caused the death of a horse at Salisbury.
What amazes me is that he got prison and Ken Dodd didn't, somebody in power didn't like him, so he did his time, came out and the people still loved him, he was a lovable rogue and the best Jockey ever!
I knew Lester as my uncles dad was his driver and met Lester several times and often went to his bungalow in Newmarket. Lester and i often had a chat and he was the nicest guy. Willie was just a gobby little Scot and jealous of Lester's fame and success. Only real success Willie had was on Question of Sport and that wasnt often. No doubt about it Lester is no doubt the greatest jockey ever.

You don't get to the top in anything by being a nice guy. That's always been my problem! Horse racing is more bent than cycling as a sport. That's saying something!
fascinating study of a great man! I understand why his behaviour is frowned upon but can't help admiring those that live life on their own terms. my only criticism would be the dubious tactics on the track. I remember when I was a little boy, my family had a day at Epsom and after a race a rumour was being passed through the crowd that Lester had caused another jockey to fall from his horse. I've always remembered that and after seeing this film I can maybe understand why the crowd would even contemplate saying such a thing.

In fact, hated amongst fellow Jockeys.*
As I was watching this documentary i thought who does piggott reminds me of.Then it hit me, lance Armstrong there personalities were just the same,both great a what they did,both loved money, and without doubt two notorious bullies they even look like each other.Two men with big ambitions.
In Britain everyone wants sporting heroes to be lovable and cuddly, I forgive any sporting superstar, which is what Piggot was, for being slightly prickly and unpleasant. Most British and Irish superstars have had flaws and not Angels. His tax problems were insignificant compared to city criminals who get knighthoods. In America, they worship their stars, warts n all.
My uncle who was a jockey back in the 1960s had a 100% win record against Lester. Rode against him twice and beat him both times. Lester was a legend !
Some absolute tosh spoken by Carson here, giving full vent to his innate jealousy of Lester. The rest of it is a pretty poor hatchet job really, cheaply put together & only Brough Scott comes out of this with much credit.....
ess jay Carson's making out as though normal race riding was exclusive to Piggott, dont remember him letting many people up HIS inside at Salisbury & you wont hear Richard Quinn moaning about it, but Carson's trying to make out as though Piggott tried to kill him. Then we get the usual whinge about him being on the hurdler (Hot Grove) while Piggott was on The Minstrel - well swap the jockeys & my guess is that the 'hurdler' would have won.....Carson's always had a chip on his shoulder over Piggott.
