- I watched this brilliant horse racing doc over the weekend.Thought I would upload. Enjoy:)

39:10 This is what so impresses me about these Irish : they are true horse people, not just racing breeders, trainers and jockeys. For example, Joseph O'Brien has been a world-class eventer, jockey and trainer, all before the age of 24. The Pony Club culture clearly is crucial in nurturing and producing great horse people.
I spent most of 1968 in Ireland messing with horses. Went to the National Stud at Kindare to check it out, cool. Hunted with the Galway Blazers including John Huston, he was quite drunk and swaying side to side on his horse. Met lots of relatives. One of them, Harry Dimond had his house near Belfast bombed by the IRA. They mistook him for the Harry Dimond who was an MP. It was a magical time. Stopped riding after a Christopher Reeves type jumping accident. I was lucky, no paralysis, just live with a lot of neck and back pain.

Johnny Roe told a friend of mine that the reason the Irish thoroughbred is a world-beater is the limestone grass in the middle of Ireland where all the yearlings are raised. Great for a strong conformation.
That is true with also a very high calcium content in the water and mild weather giving the grass a longer growing season! As for a "strong" conformation, Im not sure what you mean, A horse needs good bone e.g. flat dense bone but confirmation is the angles and connection of the bones as well as the muscles assembly which they are normally born with but not amount or type of feeding will alter it!

Very powerful/beautiful creatures.Sensational just to see them run with the wind across the green field strewned with wild flowers on sunny spring days.Some people even tried to capture them on paintings...;)))))

Great film. Thank You. I thought it was interesting when the line of Native Dancer was mentioned they showed Claiborne Farm in Ky. That was the birthplace of another very famous race horse, a little race horse that was raised in Willits, Ca. named Seabiscuit. Seabiscuit was best known for beating the best known big money race horse in a challenge race in the 20's or 30's named Man of War. The "little horse that could" went on to be one of the greatest race horse's of all time.

That's interesting, ive read that horse rearing was introduced to Ireland by the Normans, and that horse-racing and other mounted sports weren't known until the 17th century under English rule.
There are references to Horse Racing in Ireland in the Book of Leinster which dates from the 1160s

especially how 'Australia' (the horse) was breed for mental toughness, above all. his father's (Galileo) influence in all his horses he leaves on the ground...never thought of this part...passing on the mental toughness genetically! (36:00)
did they mention the aga khan? they were at the forefront of shuttling horses,to the horses peril early on.but to shuttle meant covering twice the mares making more money to buy a lot of northern dancer yearlings at the keeneland select summer sale.a ot is owed to northern dancer and the concept of shuttling.but they are the worlds greatest selfpromoters they have to be.

"Nearco (ITA)" but the best blood in his DNA was Great. and the Champion race horse "has to throw" to that Champion blood.

All horses are the one. Each deserving of a magnificent adventure and excersise . When you people finally understand it's not about winning but the process and journey. Winning is only part of a long steady and patient journey. Rewuirering other ventures funding the opperation. A sanctuary where dicepline grace and hard gradural work help the animal be it's best. Honoring that after it's retirement. Its not about you or betting or winnings. You will know this the day of judgement when we meet God in heaven.

That historian Williams is talking absolute bollocks when he said Aidan was the same stuff as Vincent. Aidan was handed Ballydoyle - and the bloodlines - but Vincent made Ballydoyle, and had to handpick each horse.

WHY, then, was Aidan given the office? By the owners. Have they been proved wrong, in their choice, decision, selection? Any successor to Vincent would have been "handed" Ballydoyle. What other scenario would it have been?

They don’t use AI because thoroughbreds are already fairly inbred. The quarter horse breed has selected for a long list of genetic conditions because of allowing AIAnd embryo transfer. POS stallion impressive is the worst culprit. He was bred out the wazoo because of his freakish muscling which precluded athleticism and would have only been a plus for a meat animal. A lot of his inbred offspring are nutcases as well.
Ireland certainly is a beautiful country and it has been instrumental in helping develop the Thoroughbred. But the thoroughbred really is a very international. For example the six million dollar Chiquita has only one Irish ancestor. Most of her ancestry was from Great Britain, then the USA and one from Canada, France and Italy as well. With its speed, grace courage and beauty the thoroughbred traverses the globe and unites humanity with a shared interest.

If you are talking about the best thoroughbreds, some of them are from Ireland but their ancestry is English. All of the English thoroughbreds trace back to English and Middle Eastern bloodstock. The foundation stallions were the Darley Arabian, the Godolphin Arabian and the Byerly Turk. English thoroughbreds were purchased by North Americans, Europeans, South Africans, Irish, Australians and so on. By now, thoroughbred racing is found far and wide including Turkey, India, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Hong Kong, Japan and many other countries.Some very fine breeding establishments are located in Ireland but there are comparable ones in most of the countries mentioned. The horses have been bred across national boundaries so much so that it is incorrect to claim they are Irish, Canadian, French, English, United Statesers, etc. Take the great sire Sadlers Wells. He was bred in the United States. At Coolmore in Ireland he has been a preeminate sire, but he is by Northern Dancer, Canadian bred, and out of Fairy Bridge, U S bred. In his second generation back he has another Canadian bred, and three U S bred. In this third generation back he has five from the USA, one from Italy , one from Great Britain and one from Argentina. In his fourth generation back he has seven from the USA, five from Great Britain, two from France, one from Italy and one from Argentina. In his fifth generation back he has fourteen from Great Britain, eleven from the USA, five from France, one from Argentina and one from Ireland. In all those generations he has only one from Ireland. So it is really inaccurate to say any thoroughbred horse is a particular country's achievement.
There are some horse breeds that are only from one country for many, many years, such as the Icelandic Horse. I have heard of the Irish Hunter and the Connemara as Irish breeds. Are there any others?

Here's a fact. 95% of all 2 year old winners trace in male line to the Darley Arabian. Almost NO stallions standing at stud do not trace in male line to the Darley.

Horses that are 8-12 years old are usually at the age where they are suitable for young riders/beginners, unlike a "green" 4 year old. A horse's bone structure is fully developed by the time they are 6, but 4 is the recommended age to start a horse.

Chris, is that worse than being run down by predators, hamstrung, or suffocated by a bite to the windpipe, sometimes having their guts eaten while they are still alive... the fate of pretty much all wild horses at some time in their lives? The cycle of life and death in Nature may look cruel to people of today. Is there a difference between eating a horse and a cow or steer? Or a chicken?
In America, many horses are kept alive that cannot be ridden, due to soundness problems in the legs or spine,or temperament issues. Even with medications ,many of these horses are in near constant pain. If those horses were recycled or harvested, thousands of homes for retired TBs would be available.
There are other creative ways that horses can be kept happy and fit and help pay their way, but it takes a mental shift on the part of humans who tend to want to keep them 'wrapped in cotton wool, so to speak.

Too bad these magnificent animals are treated like a machine. bred, trained, ran, and put in a box. It would be so much better if they were considered a flesh and blood ani!mal and be given time to just be a horse on a regular basis.. yes it takes money to pay for them but they are living, breathing and social creation.
Horses are put in a box for their safety. I agree that some turnout time on a regular basis is ideal, and some try to provide this while minimizing the likelihood that they will injure themselves. In America, many racehorses in training are given time in small roundpens where they can walk and trot around, sniff, look around, roll...'just be a horse'. All are raised on spacious pastures. Breeding stock typically has lots of time in paddocks and/or pastures to 'just be a horse'.
Other horses often spend as much time in boxes, aka boxstalls, as racehorses do,with even less time to express their instinct to run, with even less exercize, and often higher levels of frustration and stress. Even those with access to doften don' t have enough room to trot,fewer have room to run- especially in regions where land prices are high.
If ridden or given enough other exercize, this is no problem. In America,the number one killer of horses is colic- almost always caused by not enough exercize,with too much grain and frustration and/or not enough roughage frequent contributing factors. People think giving them lots of grain and letting them just loaf around most of the time is being kind, but it can kill them.
@@Jefferdaughter To be healthy a horse needs to be on the move all the time. Keep his gut moving. Horses need grass and the ability to browse. Stable fed horses on high protein diets are without a doubt far more likely to die from colic. So you are right. I love horses but let's face it the whole industry is the playground of billionaires. Oil-rich Arabs v Coolmore. plus all the hangers-on. Also, of course, the betting industry without which there would not be any form of racing. Also, some most unpleasant individuals are involved at the top. So the horses aside, who are so brave, noble and wonderful will always be the playthings of the mega-rich.

Great Thoroughbred come from all over the world. We had the best sprinter bred in Australia, best stayer bred in Great Britain, best Middle Distance horse bred in France(Seabird for me, others can disagree), greatest sire (Canada).

The breed is called the "English Thoroughbred" because it was created in England during the 18th centrury by breeding three Arabian stallions with English mares. This is just a fact. Irish breeding really took off in th 1980's when the Irish government gave the industry huge tax breaks. It did this by cutting health and welfare spending.

Watching the constant growth of such a destructive "industry" as Horse and Dogg Racing, simply gives greater credibility to Socialist Planning, Industrialisation and full employment. At least 800 race horses are killed each year by vets and many more are slaughtered cheaply for sausage meat. Justified by "creating jobs". If this is the beat Capitalism can do for work creation, then how on earth can we justify putting down an alternative economic-sporting system which does not rely on or need this destruction?? If the horses are naturally so good, why do you keep beating them and tying their tongues back during races, and using harsh bits? Why are they killed after retirement? There is nothing natural about that.
