  • Maybe "American Idol" winners aren't abandoning their guitars to play conch shell concerts, but fans of the fluted, pink-lined shell are puckering up for the annual test of "conch musicianship" in Key West. The Conch Shell Blowing Contest takes place Saturday, March 2, 2019 as a salute to Key West's seafaring heritage.
The tradition of blowing a conch shell in the Florida Keys began centuries ago. In the 1800s, when the local economy was largely based on salvaging cargoes from ships wrecked on the nearby reef, sailors attracted attention by blowing piercing blasts on the shell.
"There wasn't a ship that went out that didn't have at least one conch shell on it for communications," said veteran contest winner Clinton Curry.
Here, Curry offers conch shell blowing tips for aspiring "pucker pros."

"A deep, harsh note boomed under the palms, spread through the intricacies of the forest and echoed back from the pink granite of the mountain."

Whenever you hear the conch shell horn in coastal villages and town in Belize it signals the arrival of the fresh fish coming in from the Caribbean Sea. The sound is quite melodic and beautiful and you can hear it for miles around. Just listening to this horn reminds me of how much I miss the long lazy days of my vacations on the Caribbean Sea coast of Belize

Great video! I enjoyed the presentation and music and the joy on everyone's faces practicing the conch. I was just doing some research on transportation along the NJ canal systems of the early 1800s and was surprised to learn that boat captains often used conch shells to alert lock tenders to ready the lock. I see you know and appreciate your history as well in the Florida Keys. I learned a lot today. Thank you for sharing this!

Playing of conch in Hinduism is considered a sacred sound. It produces positive energy and erases negativity from the environment. It is usually played twice. In ancient time it also marked starting of a battle. Conch is also used to make Bangles called Shankha, worn by East Indians (Especially Bengalis) and Bangladeshis. If a woman wears those bangles it means she is married.

Very nicely presented. Wish to add, in Indian Sub Continent, Blowing of Conch Shells has been part of daily life, be it daily worship Rituals in Morning & evening, all Hindu Temples, Buddhist monasteries, its essential. Any Event, Public ceremonies, Inaugural event mostly starts, with Conch Shells blowing. Guests Arrival, welcome Ceremony organised ( Conch, Typical Sound by Tounge Twisting " Ulu Dwani, Showering Florals / Petals, putting Sandalwood Paste on Forehead & later Garlanding) , wherein usually women & girls attired in Traditional Sarees/ Saris of White with Red Border lining, lineup & dozens of women Blowing Conch Shells, Twisting. It's very colourful too. Secondly, Epic Mahabharata, has plenty use of it, to herald beginning of War, Ceasefire, end of Day's Battle etc. Conch Blowing has been our essential Rituals in daily life, since time Immortal..

Creating a conch shell trumpet is a rewarding project! Conch shell trumpets have been used for centuries in various cultures for ceremonies, calls, and music. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make and blow a conch shell trumpet:
    What You’ll Need
    1. Conch shell: A larger one (6+ inches) works best.
    2. Power drill with a cutting bit: To create the mouthpiece.
    3. Sandpaper: To smooth rough edges.
    4. Optional: Rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide for cleaning.
Steps to Make a Conch Shell Trumpet
    1. Choose the Right Shell
Find a conch shell with a pointed tip and a reasonably large body, as the sound depends on the size and resonance. The larger the shell, the deeper and louder the tone.
    2. Clean the Shell
Rinse the conch shell thoroughly with water.
You can soak it in a mixture of warm water and rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean any bacteria, especially if it’s fresh or recently collected.
    3. Cut the Tip of the Shell
Mark the Spot: Locate the apex or pointed tip of the shell where it spirals inward. This is where you’ll create the mouthpiece.
Drill a Hole: Carefully drill a hole through the tip, aiming for a hole about 1/2 inch wide. This allows you to blow into the shell. Take your time, as the shell can be brittle.
Shape the Mouthpiece: If desired, use a file or sandpaper to shape the hole into a smooth opening that’s comfortable to blow into.
    4. Smooth the Edges
Use sandpaper to remove any sharp edges around the mouthpiece. This helps avoid cuts and makes it more comfortable to play.
    5. Test for Air Flow
Blow through the hole to check for airflow. If it’s difficult to blow, try widening the hole slightly or smoothing out the inside edges. This will help the sound resonate better.
How to Blow the Conch Shell Trumpet
    1. Hold the Conch Shell Properly: Grip it firmly with one hand, positioning your lips on the mouthpiece.
    2. Form Your Lips: Similar to blowing a trumpet, place your lips close together and create a small opening. Tighten your lips slightly so the air vibrates.
    3. Blow Steadily: Blow a steady stream of air through the hole. Experiment with lip tension until you produce a sound.
    4. Practice Different Tones: By adjusting your lip tension and airflow, you can produce different tones and volumes.
With practice, you’ll be able to get a strong, resonant sound from your conch shell trumpet! Let me know if you'd like tips on maintaining your conch or learning different ways to play it.

My father used the conch shell during my graduation the amount of people turned when they saw him took it out

The conch does not "Fall Out" of the shell when you make that opening. You have to insert a knife in the slot and cut the attachment point...But you are sure good at the "Playing" part.
