It takes great skill to know the measure of air pressure and volume to create sound on a conch shell like this. A very abstract object to make music from. You must transcend a certain level of skill with trombone playing to do this... respects Steve Turre
Oh man, I must have listened to the United Nations CD a million times over the years, but actually seeing someone play two conch shells at the same time is...is... I don't even know what to say!
Imagine if he went back in time and brought the band and broke out into salsa in those French caves. The human race would have never survived after that performance from their minds being blown. Or there would be a musical duel .
In hindu religion conch shell has a very religious meaning in hindi we call it shankh which is played at a time of religious prayer and on ancient time it is used to start a war
I'm from Ibiza, a mediterranian island, and we used sea shells to comunicate between us for centuries (the fisherman is here, the pirates are coming, she's a bitch, my father is dead...). The action of make sound of a sea shell has a name: "brolar", and you have to play them like a trumpet
The small shells play even more notes than the one I use. However, I just recently found a baseball sized shell i like, so I havent used it in vids yet.
@xleeca anyways, i'm older and more mature now. i'm acheiving what i want with the instrument and I'm gonna put the Turre bashing behind me. sorry to all those I've offended.
Dude, I did revolutionize shell playing using both hands. Steve didnt think to use two becuase he plays trombone. Playing over an octave, chromatically is revolutionary, look it up. No one has ever played that many fundamental pitches (no overtones) on a shell till this point in recorded history.
I feel like more people need to appreciate what he can do to these shells! All the range of pitch he can get is astounding!
Gracias Jaime Altozano por tanto.
Y perdón por tan poco
Lo dice como si hubiera muerto xd
Jaime nos trajo aquí.
El estaría orgulloso :")
Jaime es la puta verga!!! Rifa mil ese chico!!!
See you all in another 13 years when this gets recommended again.

Yeah, but again, he plays the fucking conch
Who the fook can a person even get lessons from except from him IF he gives them?
I got to hear the Sanctified Shells band in NYC at Jazz Standard a number of years ago. It's a wonderful spectacle.
🍀
What does this have to do with the trombone? This man is a conch player first and foremost, trombone is just his side gig.
That piano rhythm is amazing
Danilo Pérez is the man
amazing piano rhythm
I really need RUclips to recommend these sort of things to me so I don’t spend years looking for it
This has laid me bare. This has set my soul a flame.
This man got lungs.
Oh man, I must have listened to the United Nations CD a million times over the years, but actually seeing someone play two conch shells at the same time is...is... I don't even know what to say!
I was at the gig in Barcelona on the same tour, around 1989-90. Still rates as one of the best jazz gigs I've ever seen.
Always a great time playing with Steve!
Airto on drums and percussion and Danilo Perez on piano. Steve There taking it back his roots. 😊
i remember that in 2002... marvelous it's cause of my love for jazz music ! thank's steve and thank's for this movie !
We made music in the past with natural Instruments. These days people get surprised by this when in the past it was normal.
I wasted my life, I should have played the fucking conch

Exciting to watch Steve Turre play conche shells.
this is not an artform, this is LIFE! ... you cannot record it or celebrate it or mimic it, it is unrepeatable

I wonder how long after the first human blew air thru their mouth to make these sounds louder that it took some jerk to fart thru one
Amazing.....Insaano ne kyaa nahi kiya... ?
