    FINALLY! A great way to hook up external audio to a compact camera and still have full use of the flip up screen!
    This will get you an awesome vlogging camera for your youtube videos that has excellent external audio quality combined with a compact form factor.
    This setup is also reminiscent of the famous Casey Neistat vlogging setup, but at round about 950$ it's just half the price:)

    Dear TubeNoob, thank so much for your tips and ideas, it helps us a lot!
    Your solution for using the Hode Mic Me on a Canon M3 is great, simple and seams so efficient. My question is if it is possible to use the same solution on a sony a6400?
    What would not work? I will be glad if you could answer it.
    Best regards from Brazil.

      The same solution I have not come up with for the 6400, but I have this video about teh 6400 and mic setups: ruclips.net/video/3E6GDGoY7Ug/видео.html
      Also there is this M3/M6 followup setup: ruclips.net/video/4sSvPTE5IMA/видео.html
      Hope that helps you out a little:) More questions? Just ask. Greetings!

    For vlogging I dont really think an external mic is needed besides the dead cat factor. If people learned how to compress and limit vocal then there would be less of a need for external mics. In my latest khao yai vid I vlogged with this and wont be going back to the G7xii. I think the audio is fine, all i did was compress and limit my vox, all in adobe prem. great review.

    • @Mark10ProVideo
      @Mark10ProVideo  6 лет назад

      Hey there! Sorry for the delayed answer. For some reason your comment got stuck in the likely spam section....no idea why....
      True, your audio sounds amazing. I have to learn how to do a good job using the compression techniques. Where did you learn?

    • @yamatemikey
      @yamatemikey 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks. I learned at the school of youtube. lol. Obviously for most film factors the external is a must, but for run n gun vlogging as i do its really just a pain in the butt. So learning compression and limiting really free'd me up to travel lighter and create faster. Cheers for the reply. Luv your videos.

      For the wind noise problem you can use micro wind jammers from rycote. They do a good job given how small they are. Depends on where the internal mics are located, but most of the time there is some way to install them. Thanks for the compliment:)

    @Pol97647 6 лет назад +1

    what about setup with deadcat??

    • @Mark10ProVideo
      @Mark10ProVideo  6 лет назад +1

      Hey, Gregory Obornev! Either you can customize a rycote foam wind screen to fit the mic, that won*t block the screen a lot, or use the follow up setup here: ruclips.net/video/4sSvPTE5IMA/видео.html
      This one allows for the deadcat to be mounted.
      Hope that helps you out a little. Greetings!

  • @raymondjevans
    @raymondjevans 6 лет назад +1

    Great solution but wouldn't you have sound degradation without a shock mount? Eg. If you were walking and talking?

    • @Mark10ProVideo
      @Mark10ProVideo  6 лет назад

      Hey, Raymond J Evans! The mic does become more touch sensitive. So rubbing the camera body will end up on the audio track, but if you*re using some kind of selfie stick it*s not a problem.

      @raymondjevans 6 лет назад +1

      Yep, however I'm planning to mount my iPhone on top using a cold shoe mount so I can have monitoring when vlogging. Not the best solution with the latency issues but good enough just to get framing right.

    Can I ask why the tubing needs to be 18mm in outer thickness? Couldn't it be thinner on the outer dimension which would make it more elegant?

    • @Mark10ProVideo
      @Mark10ProVideo  7 лет назад

      Hey, Richard! Good question. Thing is....the wallthickness has to be 4mm for the tube to stick to the video mic me in a way that it doesn't turn easily. It basically works with less wall thickness, but then the video mic me sits on the adapter less stable, it then turn more easily, which is something I didn't want. But by all means go ahead an see if you still like it with less wall thickness:)
      Hope that helped you out. Greetings!

Sorry I don't have better news for you....I am looking all over for these things, have contacted them about selling on Amazon.com, but I didn't hear back from them....Hopefully they'll restock on UK soon...otherwise...I've been getting the adapters in germany and have sent them to the Phillipines already, so shipping one to norway wonÄt be that much hassel for me.....so if you can't find them anywhere, just visit the facebook site ( facebook.com/tubenoob/ ) and hit up a conversation:) Greetings!

    thanks man. tested it for my vlog setup it's really nice but if you touch the stick or the camera to much you will here it in the mic as you would with the internal mic. so I attached a rode mic micro with the suspension to the side of the camera and this works just fine for me.

    • @Mark10ProVideo
      @Mark10ProVideo  7 лет назад +2

      Yes, rubbing against the camera body with the fingers and such will result in unwanted noises, but if you put it on a gorillapod it's usually no problem....you attached a video micro to the side??? how did you do that?? do you have a video? send me the link....I'll check the channel....can you send me a link on how you did that...I can't think of a way right now....except if you were to drill a hole, I believe I have seen a video showing that:) Greetings!

    The obvious question here is- If you can do it, then why doesn't the manufacturers of camera mics just design them to fit like this in the first place?

  • @tomedwards81
    @tomedwards81 7 лет назад +1

    Cool video, thanks! What puts me off using the Canon M cameras is the apparently poor video autofocus. What is your opinion on this? The new M5 is supposed to have amazing dual pixel af like the 80D but it's so expensive.

    • @Mark10ProVideo
      @Mark10ProVideo  7 лет назад

      It's not a great video AF system....I'll do a series n the M3 soon and test it thoroughly, but definitely the video AF of the M5 kills the M3s...easy. Phase detect for the whole sensor just about kills every contrast detect system out there....but the M5 doesn't have a flip or tilt svivel screen which unfortunatelly kills it for me.....but if you're behind the camera and it's between the m3 and the m5, save up the money and get the m5, you'll be happier for sure:) Hope that helps:) Greetings!
      p.s. what kind of work do you want to do?

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81 7 лет назад

      Thanks for your detailed reply! We do general vlogging and have just bought a drone for some more cinematic stuff. At the moment we mostly use a Canon G7X but the autofocus is frustrating at times. Was going to upgrade to the Mark II model but decided it's not worth it. Have just ordered a Micromuff to sort out wind noise though so looking forward to that. Tempted by the Sony A5100 after watching your review but concerned that useability will not be as good as the Canon. Also, what would give the shallower depth of field and better image quality in low light? The Sony has a bigger sensor but the Canon has a faster aperture. Think we'll stick with a compact rather than an interchangeable lens system because we find that portability and convenience reigns supreme for vlogging. It's nice to have external audio and the ability to change lenses but personally for us the extra weight, size and hassle isn't worth it for simple vlogging.

    • @Mark10ProVideo
      @Mark10ProVideo  7 лет назад

      Not upgrading to the mark ii is definitely a good choice, when you're predominantly or exclusively use the camera for vlogging, because allmost al the changes are good for photography but not a big improvement for videography.
      Micrimuffs rule....sometimes it's difficult to place them though....but they're awesome:)
      The sony is a little front heavy and it doesn't fit a regular jeans pocket or someting similar...
      The working iso of the sony is about two times that of the canon, so approx. a stop of light, but the 1.8 of the canon is two stops of light ahead of the 3.5 of the sony, then again the sony has the lager sensor and almost gets a full stop of light more than the canon does. so comparing kit lenses, the canon should be slightly ahead of the sony, but internal processing play a rola as well, and i don't have enough info right now to take that into account. they should perform pretty similar when it comes to lowlight performance. Also depth of field should be pretty much the same when using the kitlens on the sony.
      if portability and convenience is the most important thing to you you choice is the right one i think. the best camera is the one you have with you:) cause it is the one that has you create the most! greetings!

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81 7 лет назад

      Thanks for taking so much time to reply in such detail. I'm going to stay with the G7X for the time being and maybe upgrade if something better comes out next year. If only a company would give us a specialist vlogging camera with dual pixel af, a 20-135mm built in zoom, an external mic jack and half decent battery life in a compact form factor. Maybe one day!

    • @Mark10ProVideo

      TubeNoob i did! And i tried it out, but it did not convert a 4 pole to 3 pole im asuming it was a 3pole to 3 pole right angle. The camara other wise is awesome. I didnt want to use my rode video mic pro on it tho. Or do a DIY move that could damage my warrenty.

    Hi there. You certainly don't give up on a problem. That's all I can say. Thank you, because the rest of us benefit.
    Your videos on this subject highlight two things for me. How few, if any, small compact / mirrorless cameras there are that fully serve vlogging needs. (Sony, what the fu*ck are you thinking?) ie. flip up screen, decent picture quality, and mic input! Also I just can't believe that camera manufacturers don't make these types of mic's themselves. Ones that just plug in (without the need for hard-to-find adapters) and stay there! I'm looking for the perfect small set up for hiking and kayaking (doesn't need to be waterproof) and this Eos 3 rig (with your excellent modifications) is the best I have managed to find. The alternative is the Sony Rx100 / Canon GX7 m2/ Lumix L10 route (and just live with the in-camera audio) If you have any other suggestions please let me know. Keep up the good work. J

      Thanks for your nice comment, jacek szulecki! Much appreciated!I have a follow up video on that EOS M3 problem, that goes a different route and might be interesting for you. ( ruclips.net/video/q88p4CdchmI/видео.html ) I am thinking about a convenient solution for cams with no inputs for external mics. And I totally feel you on the sony part:))) Oh boy....EOS M6 though will have a pretty good AF, canon dual pixel, like 70D....but expensive....
      Greetings!

    Yes, I watched this updated video as you suggested and you still did not answer my questions... does the gray windshield that comes with the microphone, fit onto the mic when you mount the mic that close to the camera?

    • @Mark10ProVideo
      @Mark10ProVideo  7 лет назад +1

      Hey! Sorry Ethan! That question must have just slipped right by me when I was reading the comment, sorry again.
      Yes, the orignal video micro deadcat fits, but it's pretty big, so it partyl blocks the screen. I use a third party foam windscreen from rycote that I cut to fit the setup. Greetings!

      But actually the 10 cm version should do it, because you have to cut it anyway:)

    ive been trying to find a workaround a full year and your idea is brilliant. when using the videomic me, do you turn down the canon preamp all the way down or do you keep it in auto audio levels?

    • @Mark10ProVideo
      @Mark10ProVideo  7 лет назад

      Hey Hikers For Life! Thanks for your nic comment! I manually set it so it levels at just under -12db, normalizing the audio in post. that gives me the best results. Auto levels pushes the preamp when there's silence. You can take the noise out in post , but it sometimes messes with the rest of the audio. So I set the amp myself, and I am ok with a little quieter audio, that I then normalize later. Hope that helps! Greetings!

      No, not this one in particular, because the hero 6 has a different metal mount for the strap with which this method does not work.

    So personally would you recommend the Panasonic G7 or this Canon M3 for travel videos, vlogging, etc?

    • @Mark10ProVideo
      @Mark10ProVideo  7 лет назад +2

      Phew that's a tough one.....I haven't tested the 9-18mm m.zuiko on the g7 yet......vlogging imho just needs the extreme wide angel, not exclusively of course, but as a stable definitely....man, though question......If I was doing likea tyear long trip like you, expecting the m.zuiko 9-18mm to be awesome, like every other m.zuiko I ever had the pleasure to use, I would as of now, not having tested both cameras side by side yet, go with the g7 I think, because I am pretty sure AF facetracking/tracking performance is almost the same....but the g7 comes with 4k, that sometimes just makes the difference when you're shooting landscapes with intricate details, also if you have the time on your hands, because the g7 is such a video centric camera, with so many great video features and settings, I believe you can tweak it into getting you better image quality, if you put in the time to set it up correctly. Also a complete tilt svivel screen is still the best kind of screen for vlogging I believe.
      However, if the 9.18mm m.zuiko was bad, propably I would go with the EOS M3, despite not hvaing 4k, or a complete tilt svivel screen, because I for one just want want want the extreme wide angle which the 11-22 will give me, because it just gets more of the world into one frame.
      So if I can have an extreme wide angle that performs well on the g7 and I would consider binding myself to either the g7 or the m3 for a whole year....I would then go g7.
      Hope that helps! Greetings!

    • @FilipYoung
      @FilipYoung 7 лет назад +2

      Hey, thanks for the reply! I think I'll give G7 a try. It can shoot in 4k/30fps and 1080p/60fps and that's a big thing for me to be able to do both of those things. Cheers again! You really have a great channel!

      I am curious to find out what do u think of canon eos m3 and Edutige MICROPHONE ETM-001 combination

    • @Mark10ProVideo
      @Mark10ProVideo  7 лет назад

      Well it is an omnidirectional mic, that is built to gather more of a surround profile of the ambiance instead of picking up a voice, also the noise ration is not as good as with the etm 008. But it is still a cool little mic. Used it on my gopro hero 4 for some time and was pleased with it.
      Something else you wanna know? Just ask... Greetings:)

      Ich habe mir das Kabel sogar bestellt.
      Aber dann habe ich es erstmal gelassen weiter zu machen. Ich bin kein Fan davon, wenn ich nicht alles komplett spurenfrei wieder zurück bauen kann und deswegen stört ich das Kettband an der Seite der Kamera ;-)
      Die Idee mit dem Schlauch ist schon ganz cool und im Moment warte ich auf meine Bestellung der Vibrations-Aushängung (Ali-Express) um dann die Idee mit dem Rig zu probieren ;-)
