The MOST VERSATILE Impact Wrench | New Tool Tuesday

  • The good old fashion method of removing a nut or bolt with a breaker bar stills works, however it runs the possibility of snapping a bolt as it will be under constant stress, unlike how an impact wrench works. An impact wrench gives small shocks / bursts to the bolt to jolt it and break it free, without causing any damage.
    For the past 50 years, we’ve been stuck with using pneumatic variants of tools as that was the only way to go. Since battery technology has improved drastically in the past decade or so, pneumatic tools are now a thing of the past. Cordless tools are portable, much quieter, and typically product a lot more torque given the size of the tool.

    The DCF899 1/2” Impact Wrench is an incredibly strong machine that is able to remove ANY nut or bolt found on a car. If the bolt doesn’t want to come out with this gun, its either welded to the car, or you’re using the tool incorrectly. With that being said, it is a rather bulky tool and weight more than twice as much as my smaller DCF894 1/2” Impact Wrench. I truly love them both, as they cannot replace each other. The larger 899 has no problem removing bolts, however is WAYYY overkill for just removing lug nuts. The 894 can remove lug nuts without a problem, and so much more.
    NOTE Be sure to use impact grade sockets while using impact tools so you don’t run the risk of breaking the sockets. These tools are seriously strong, and won’t have any problem stripping the socket if it is a chrome socket that is intended for hand tools only (aka, a regular ratchet)**

      @@VanquisherUSMC you're right, you can see the rotor moving. Honestly if it did remove the axle nut easily my mind would have been blown. Plus these specs they put on the boxes are questionable. EVA RUclips channel tests other impacts torque values and got some interesting results. Still, this little impact is great.

    Those two are are really all you need. I have a Milwaukee M18 Fuel for high power and the older version of that Dewalt for lower powered needs. I use a 1/2 inch to 3/8 reducer adapter to use my 3/8 non impact sockets on the dewalt to help remove all 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm bolts.

    I have the 894 and its excellent. But i would not use with 1.5 or 2a packs. Regardless of tool, voltage sag will be happening pretty quick if your doing any bigger jobs. Stick the flexvolt on the 894, or a 4a minimum for better performance. Over 800nm of undoing torque will take care of most general stuff at home or garage.

    Hi,
    Just seen your video on the 1/2" dewalt mid impact. I believe you have the breaking away information wrong. The fastening torque is 330 ft-lbs max. The break away is 600 ft-lbs max torque.
    The DeWalt 20v high torque 1/2" impact is 700 ft-lbs fastening max torque. The breakaway is 1200 ft-lbs max torque.
    I could still be wrong but the mid impact could have taken the center bolt off.
    By the way Milwaukee M18 1/2" mid impact is 450 ft-lbs fastening max. 600 ft-lbs max torque breakaway
    This information is on both of their web site. Or for anyone who is looking for information on both impact.
    Still, both brand are great tools to have.

    The 894 is about half the weight of the 899, but is probably closer to 2/3 the size of the 899. It makes more sense for people like me to buy the 894, who don't live in the rustbelt, nor need 700 ft. lbs. in forward and 1,200 ft. lbs. in reverse (breakaway torque). The numbers for the DCF894 are 330 and 600, respectively. The extra weight adds up over the day, especially when you consider there is a lighter-weight and sized alternative that will do most of what the bigger, heavier model will do for you. The Tim Taylor rant for "More Power!" isn't always the best policy. There is a place and need for the 899; just be sure to evaluate your needs and requirements before you opt for it.

    The second setting is NOT medium. It’s variable speed, depending on resistance.
    When removing a nut it’ll, use full power, once it breaks it’ll stop for half a second, and then remove the nut at a reduced speed. This is done so it doesn’t come flying off the impact.
    Also it’s rated for 600 lb ft of breakaway torque. It can take up to 15 seconds to achieve this.

    I don't know somebody answered me try to contact De Walt and said they didn't get back to them, I can't find it now.
    Anyways I have the mid torque half inch drive, and I have the 3/8 brushless impact I bought them as a set I haven't used the half inch yet but I have used the 3/8 a few times and actually tonight I did try to blow off two of my lug nuts off the rear of my 01 Grand Prix they came right off with a 3/8 I can't attest you what they were torqued to,
    a garage rotated the tires for me when they balanced the rears and rotated them to the front. Either an experienced mechanic with an impact just made them so tight or they did torque them I don't know for sure, but my 3/8" impact took them right off.

    Wrong socket for axle nut should be six sided, try that and it would work. The breakaway torque is the same "MAX" for each power setting. It is the tightening torque that changes.

    Milan--What was the purpose of the chrome socket on the lug nuts, in addition to using the impact socket to remove them? I've not seen anyone do that before, and chrome sockets shouldn't be used with impact wrenches. Incidentally, I just bought one of these impact wrenches; the specs on the back of the box show max. torque running forward (to tighten a fastener) is 330 ft. lbs.; the maximum breakaway torque (i.e., running in reverse) is 600 ft. lbs. So far, I like mine; given it's size, weight and power, it will be everything I need for what I plan to ask of it. I don't believe you mentioned it's middle power range (the "precision wrenching" capability), but that was what cinched it for me.

    I’m really curious as to how the baby wrench would have preformed with the flex volt battery instead of the baby 2Ah battery .
    Deal on it for $160 for the baby wrench tool only or $200 for the big boy with a 4ah battery .
    I like the compactness and lightness of the baby wrench.

    I just bought the smaller dewalt. Barely took off silverado lug nuts and couldn’t do the caliper bolts. A breaker bar 18” with one hand loosened the same bolt. 350 ft lbs? No way. I returned it and got the larger one.
    The smaller one is only slightly more powerful than a standard 1/4 inch chuck impact driver. Don’t buy it, just get the larger one.

    All you need to do is engage the emergency brake, stick a long screwdriver passing through the rotor inside one of the rotor holes to keep the wheel from spinning & it'll come off.

    I've been debating returning my 1/4'' dcf887d2 impact driver due to a badly wobbling chuck - which is a shame because the tool is awesome - so after watching 50 or so vids, seeing this one makes me think the 1/2'' is the way to go (& get an adapter so I can use my 1/4'' hex bits with the 1/2''). Milanmastracci you did a great demonstration - lots of good info - I appreciate it! 2 years have passed since you made this vid, how's the 894 doing now?

    • @milanmastracci
      @milanmastracci  4 года назад

      I'm happy to hear that! The 894 and 899 are still holding up great to this date. I have to say I use the 894 much more than the 899 because of how small and powerful it is. That's the one I would recommend for every day use.

    • @davparksoh
      @davparksoh 4 года назад

      @@milanmastracci Ok - good to know. From your vid, you're doing car related demonstrations, so have you used the impact dcf894 in other work, like drilling into metals or concrete? It will do it with the right adapter - my little Dewalt dcf887 screamed through steel plate using a 1/2''
      bit better than my dedicated main Dewalt corded drill - w/o even going into the impacting stage - so I'm figuring the 1/2'' would have no problems with twice the torque. (I'm a metalworker/ welder BTW - so it's important to me). Thanks again - keep up the good vids!
