RIDGID Vs. Dewalt One Of These Impact Wrenches just got DESTROYED! TOOL DUEL!

  • In today's Tool Duel, I put the Dewalt DCF894B Impact Wrench up against the RIDGID Gen5X Impact Wrench to see who would come out victorious. I think the answer may be clear in this one!
I also wanted to see if the Gen5X is truly an OCTANE tool?
Who wins this Tool Duel? The RIDGID or Dewalt impact wrench???

The Octane being slower in setting 1 actually makes sense. The octane battery allows the tool to communicate actual amperage and temperature of the cells in the battery. So using the octane battery actually allows the tool to more finely control the torque and amperage used by the tool, so it gives more distinct 1, 2 and 3 settings. Whereas for the normal 4ah battery, the tool just divides the voltage lower for each of the lower settings, amperage is dependent on how much charge is in the battery and where it is on the discharge curve. It doesn't finely control the torque in each setting.

Your test resulted in the same conclusion as many other videos. This Rigid model finished 2nd only to the Milwaukee M18. Testing in wood can be decieving due to inconsistency of grain. The videos that run tests on steel bolts and nuts for torque strength is much more consistent. It was those tests that had the Rigid finishing 2nd to Milwaukee. I'm buying this Rigid model for home automotive work, because it meets all the requirements I would need and it is less expensive than Milwaukee and the batteries are also cheaper. If I were a pro mechanic, I'd pay the extra for the Milwaukee.

Great video, transparent testing process. All killer, no filler.
I suspect the difference has more to do with the Dewalt impact's reaction to the battery change. The Ridgid impact probably didn't slow down, but rather the Dewalt might have sped up with its larger battery.
Glad I got the Ridgid impact. This thing is a beast! Had the X4, and it was okay for lug nuts and such, but it burst into tears when faced with rusty suspension bolts or any real challenge. Had the motor pulled apart in my daily driver, and the X4 wouldn't pull the crank pulley bolt. Rattled on it for 30 seconds or more total with the old X4, no joy. So, drove to HD and bought the X5. Took 1 second flat to rip the same bolt out with the X5, and when putting the bolt back in we didn't let go of the trigger fast enough and it turned the bolt 1/4 turn past original torque (oops, well the threads still held...).
I can't say enough good about this X5 impact. It's physically shorter than the X4, so you can get into tighter areas, and the X5 has WAY more beans.

I’ve been using ridgid for 13+ years now. I still have them. Still trucking. Only things I’ve replaced are batteries and many many many screws and bolts.😂👍🏼 Only reason I bought my first ridgid power tool is because of the price difference. But as the years went by, I’ve just stuck with it more because of the quality. Of course the price also, but the reliability and quality is just as if not better than the ridiculously expensive ones. Till this day, ridgid has been my go to power tools.

The one on the dewalt can sometimes get obstructed when using. Now, what can you say about the longevity of the tools? The rigid seems to heat up more. I wonder if that equates to more wear and tear on its components. Which will cause it to fail sooner. 🧐

Octane batteries make a huge difference especially on the octane verison of the ridgid tools, it's noticable right away. I have the Octane version of this Rigid tool and it's a beast.

  • @phxgen
    @phxgen 4 года назад +1

There's a really easy way to tell if a ridgid tool is an "octane" tool or not, look at the battery interface and if there are two contacts on the far sides in addition to the normal 4 power/thermistor blade contacts, then it's an "octane" tool.
For non-octane tools, an octane battery vs. any other fully charged li-ion battery pack (any that isn't so wimpy it overheats constantly or burns out) will make no more than a few percent difference in performance. Maybe 10%, and more than 14% is basically impossible. Ohm's *law* applies with cordless power tools just it does in anything else electrically powered. The performance difference with pre-octane tools is simply the difference in voltage sag, a pack that can provide more continuous current will sag less and the power difference is directly related to that voltage sag difference. When TTI brands tell you that a battery can give your old tools "X% MORE POWER," read the fine print: they're comparing to a pack of X% lesser Ah rating, and by "POWER" they mean "run-time."
***disclaimer that I have to post on any tool comparison video comment for whatever reason: I am not any sort "ridgid fanboy," I'm a "whatever gets the job done fan-man." Most of my current daily driver (no pun intended) cordless tools are ridgid right now because Home Depot sold me on the LSA; when I burn through a battery pack or destroy a tool I bring it to my local HD and they hand me a new one on the spot no questions, or if it's no longer stocked they order it. That's pretty cool, but I've also read plenty of LSA horror stories; I guess it just depends on your relationship with your local HD and perhaps the specific tool or battery you need replaced. Previously I used primarily Makita and Dewalt cordless tools, and still own and use many other tool brands. I don't care if the tool is pink and says "Barbie" all over it as long as it does what I need it to. If you DO look down or up upon users of any other brand, put your dick+ruler away and get to work sissy.

Ridgid confirmed that the Gen 5X is that indeed Octane on one of the Facebook groups. They said that the batteries weren’t ready as planned when the tool was released. That’s why you see the same part#s for the Octane branded and the non-Octane one. Another way to check is to see if the tool has extra battery terminals. 4 instead of two. Also if the base of the tool is like a greyish black color.

  • @CMOS357

Gen 5x rigid is actually a pre-octane release. It appears the octane battery is responding to the application where it senses it doesn't need full power it doesn't transmit full output on a "low" setting it will release enough power to get the job done using the current setting. At work we were issued DeWalt tools they work great no complaints, BUT I OWN a Ridgid [1/2" chuck drill, a compact 1/4"hex impact also a 3/8" brushless SUBCOMPACT impact (it's a beast) and the OCTANE 1/2" mid torque impact 🔧👍 all tools hard-hitting and when you factor in the LSA it's a win-win situation- great video.

I'm a Milwaukee and Ridgid user and for the cheaper price I have several of these with 3.0's. Real world power is almost the same as my Gen 1/ Gen 2 Mid Torque Milwaukee's that I keep around the shop and.home. The Ridgids are my OK if they get stolen tools so I keep them in my vehicles for SHTF road trips No flash light needed when changing a flat with the Trilight LOL. BTW I know the 3.0's are no more, but you can still find them online. I believe Ridgid is coming out with a 8amp 2700 battery this year so that be a good pair for sure👍.

Awesome video and comparison TRZ. The link in the description to Home Depot shows this Ridgid model to be the Octane version. According to the Ridgid website the Octane model has 485 ft. lbs. of fastening torque. This is also Ridgid's flagship model. The DeWalt DCF894 is the company's mid range model and is listed at 330 ft. lbs. of fastening torque. Hence why the Ridgid gave a clear performance advantage. Dewalt's flagship 1/2 inch impact wrench is the DCF899. It is listed at 700 ft. lbs. of fastening torque. It would be interesting to see the Ridgid Octane against that model. Thanks and keep up the awesome videos.

Vince @VCG Construction is good people! 1 of 3 tool channels I am really into. He knows the tools, he knows the strengths and weaknesses. And also like TRZ shows it how it is, good or bad. Even with the beloved milwaukee tools. I know everyone wants the fuel to lose at things at some point. And it does in a sense. Since we're talking mid tq impacts (ridgid's flagship model) we won't go over the high tq 1/2 or 3/4 or 1 inch high tq's from milwaukee.
I have the gen5x and both fuel 2861-20 and 2860-20 mid tq's. The specs are pretty well identical. At least on the octane model. And I think the gen5x is better than the octane. Just my experience.
Here's where it gets good. The ridgid will BEAT FUEL on speed. Small lags like here in the tool dual, etc. The gen 5x is faster. Ipm and rpm even show that on the spec sheet. As far as loosening bolts and brute power driving and fastening large fasteners or harder material. The Fuel mops the floor with the other mids on the market. It is what it is. And apples to apples.... When you throw an HO 6.0 or 8.0 on it, it utilizes the HO technology about the same as the octane.
The Gen5x is extremely impressive. TTI really makes some great stuff. You can't go wrong either way. Boils down to....what is your current platform? Do you want speed? Or power. In an impact wrench I don't need that extra few hundred RPM or IPM. I need good, smooth power and tq. And Need to get the job done. But YMMV.
If you're on Ridgids platform, I'd buy ridgid. And vice versa. I run a ton of milwaukee. And some ridgid. I got the gen5x on clearance for like 58 bucks. Couldn't let it go. Same with the fuel mid tq. I got it with a charger and an xc5.0 in a bag for 120 out the door. Then my crew wanted one, so I made arrangements. Oddly enough, I still use my m12 fuel 3/8 stubby for tire rotations, blade changes, small ancors, absolutely anything I can. And pretty well use the Fuel high tq for all of my larger equipment. I find the mid torque wrenches come in handy when we are doing structural work(foundation bolts to sill plate, through bolts, lags, large wedge anchors. We don't use lags as often anymore with all the structural fasteners out now... But either way they are more than powerful enough for just about anything. You can't go wrong. 💪 So..... On the tool dual, this is what you can expect. (Spoiler I know) Damn me.
But the suspense! Everyone likes a good adrenaline rush 👍
See ya on the next one

In some countries Dewalt is actually forced to market them as 18V which is what they really are. Even the Flexvolt batteries are marketed as 54V. That is certainly the case here in Australia. I can't believe there are still people around who think there is actual difference between 20V max and 18V nominal. It is just a marketing ploy from Dewalt to make their tools seem more powerful but like I said in some markets they can't get away with it.

yes sir, the only "20v" part about the dewalt is on a fresh off the charger, not in use battery. Or 20v max resting without load dewalt says in fine print.
And of course same thing with flexvolt. 54v nominal is correct.
But the Dewalt fans didnt know until people started researching them and digging for it. Of course, there are still the extreme fanboys who swear the 20v dewalt is superior to 18v because more power. Lol. Whatever, let them eat it up. And then scratch their heads as to why the 20v actually produced far less power. In the case of the flexvolt, that one's hard to beat. The miter saws and rear handle circ saws especially. 👍

No, the reason the octane battery on low lost on the lag bolt that one time is because you placed the lag in right next to a previous hole. So the wood around that hole was pushed out harder/denser so more difficult for it to drive the lag in. Also, the dewalts lag off the start was also a bit more driven in but that's miniscule. Those in combination caused it to lose, otherwise it would have won consistently like it did on all other rounds.

Wonder how the Ridgid does with nut/bolt loosening? As far as being a car/truck tech, loosening is way more important than driving. For example, suspension components, lug nuts on a dually that have been overtightened. To us that is the true test.

This was great but Ridgid needs to expand their tool line a bit. Other brands like Dewalt & Milwaukee offer a larger variety of tools. For example they both offer 3/8 as well as 1/2 impacts and they aslo have mid torque and high torque options. Ridgid has done well with what they offer but I would like to see a few more options on their product line. They haven't even made a 12 volt brushless line yet.

The rigid sure won in the speed on high, and is forsure a great tool. It does not look like the dewalt heated up so much compared to the rigid which I would say is a great plus.
Say you where to drive in 50 of these right after each other. Then the motor heating is very important I would say :)

The ridgid by a long shot. No surprise to me. I've been extremely unimpressed with 90% of the 20v max line. Oh well. That dcd996 dcd791 and the planer are great though. Idk what happened to the rest of them. Lol!
I've noticed the gen 5x tools seem to take advantage of the octane batteries. But not until it is needed. You put it through something extreme like a 3/4 x 12 inch lag screw through end grain of a 6x6 (did this with my high tq fuel.) Or a tree stump (fresh cut)
It'll seem slower but believe me, those gen 5x tools use that battery too. When the tool rwaches for more, the battery gives it more. Been what I noticed anyway. I compared my 9ah HD to my 8.0HO recently this way. Run time is shorter, but power is more with the 8.0 for sure! Play around with it. It's all impressive. And that gen5x is a highly underrated tool. Thanks man! You're a beast 💪

To be fair DeWalt is the lowest geared 1/2" on the market so it's not going to win any races, a better match up for the rigid would be a Makita they are about even the Makita is rated a little lower torque but a lag bolt is fairly low. I'd like to see how they compare given the lower torque rating but higher rpm I'm willing to bet it wins in driving.

Great VIdeo. YOU ARE CORRECT. It's important to note that the OCTANE battery has a microchip inside. This tiny computer regulates the battery cell in real time. I have yet to see one of these reviews that properly points out the difference between torque and horsepower. Driving a fastener quickly is a question of *horsepower*, which doesn't appear in any impact wrench specs I'm aware of (same goes for impact drivers). *Torque*, on the other hand, is how tight the bolt is after rattling on it for a minute straight.

So if you have the jobplus multitool from ryobi, you dont even have to buy new chargers or batteries. You can have the benefits of both without switching platforms. Plus the ryobi jobplus is significantly cheaper than the ridgid jobmax.

Great vid but you can’t use a ir thermometer on shiny material the shinier it is the more off the reading will be. And the rigid octane batteries can put out more amperage and the GEN five tools could always use more power than the older batteries could put out so really all you have done is given a motor more amperage so naturally it is stronger

    • @geoffstrickler
      @geoffstrickler 4 года назад

Maker Mentality incorrect, IR thermometer isn’t reading reflected IR, it is measuring emitted IR reflectivity of the surface is irrelevant. The only factor the surface makes is the thermal conductivity of the material, and that only matters in the short term, long term, any high temps inside will cause the material to heat up and emit more IR.
Of course, you could use an extreme thermal insulator as a coating to reduce the surface temp, as long as you have sufficient airflow to remove the heat via vents/fan. The air coming out would still be warm/hot, but the surface itself could remain cooler.
