I have a Sony A7R V, I feel the noise level on the A7R V is over looked by most people. Give it a proper exposure in the dark, it performs as good as other cameras. I've shot Orion nebula with it paired with the 70-200 f2.8 GM II and results are very clean. I also compared it with the A7 IV in low light, it's not that big of a differences in noise level if both are collecting enough light(1-2 min long exposure in pitch dark for foreground). That said, if it's underexposed, the A7R V revealing more noises than the lower mp cameras like the A7 IV. This is why if you compare the sky portion of the sample shots you took they look similar in noise level(because there is more signal covering the noise) while if you bring up the shadow portion of the foreground(which is underexposed) you see the 61mp sensor shows more noises because it's noisier on pixel level due the smaller size of each pixel. IMO, if you do tracked MW shots, the 61mp camera is better because it captures more details. But if you do single shots or time lapse, then the lower mp cameras is a better choice. Isnt sony camera's image quality very bad after astromodification? I recently did mod my A7C and corner sharpness completely ruined. Too much elongated stars on every lens compare to pre mod. And I used top quality lens like the 14GM, 24GM, 50 1.2 GM

Yeah bro, after careful consideration, I think I’m going to go with the oldie but goodie a7iii. In addition to my a7rV, 24Mp seems the best for me as a backup body/low light camera…
Though im a bit late to the party i think you should revisit these images with noise reduction software. I have been told that the higher pixel sensor respond much better to noise reduction and give a better end result after post processing.
Thanks for the test. It could be that in electronic shutter the images drop to 12 bit quality vs 14 with mechanical shutter. Odd that the a1 would not have hot pixels. Long Exposure Noise Reduction wasn’t turned on by mistake? Unlikely, as you would have noticed that. Does it have some other image softening routine the others don’t? Thinks again and great shots!

I wonder if you’d get similar results if you placed the a7RV/CR into the lower megapixel mode? This would be something to test. Not many RUclipsrs have tested this theory but from what I’ve read online it would make the cameras matchup in terms of noise performance.
It seemed like the 61mp zoomed in further than the a1 can you use the same magnification manually to see if the nose is similar then? Great video now i want to go to lake lost‼️
yeah thats literally every single person ever that does these and says the 61 is worse. Every time because it automatically zooms in more because its got higher resolution. I dont think its any worse.
I still photograph with the original a7. 😄 On a star tracker or when it's really dark it's still amazing. However, a few weeks ago I did a milky way time lapse on a slider on a relatively warm night (20-25°C). In this case the noise is really quite bad. I had to use loads of tricks to manage the noise. Currently, I'm considering buying the a7iv or a7cii.
It might have been worthwhile with the a7cr to also shoot in "M-RAW" with a 26 MP outpout image, as it is known to reduce noise and eliminate hotpixels..
@@spencerlee808 For me it's still plenty to print and threre'll be a loss in resolution anywys due to noise and the wide open aperture (less so when shooting in M-Raw in the first place). Also, usually you'd take at least two exposures anyways: one for the terrestrial landscape (where the deep shadows are) and one for the sky and combine them in post.
The 12MP Sony cameras (zv-e1, fx3, a7siii) are actually 48MP sensors that are binned down to 12MP in body. It's not related to the size of individual photosites.
Maybe your Side by side comparison fail if you use the same ISO on all cameras. The base Iso from the A1 ist 100 + 500 the A7CII and R has 100 + 320 that make maybe differed results.

I recently added a9 as a second body to my a7riii. I was too curious about shooting electronic vs mechanical on my a7riii since I mostly use the a9 on electronic shutter. I use it for wildlife and astro. If I understood you correctly, I should stick with mechanical on the R?

I don't think you need an excuse to keep the Sony A1. You should choose the camera that gives you the results you want. If I could afford it, I would definitely choose the A1. I just purchased this camera and am wondering how the lower megapixel features affect low light performance. I guess I just need to get out there in low light setting and try them out, but I would still love to get your input.
no becuase its directly crops the sensor and uses less pixels and those individual pixles are the same size whether its in crop mode or not. Low light performance will actually look worse because it doesnt bin the pixels.
Too extreme lol, u should have seen noise of sony slt-55, I literally had to turn all possible denoising technics, sharpening, and resize the image to 1/4 resolution just to make incredible purple mess go away.

I have modified two (2) Sony a7iv cameras and they work flawlessly. I wouldn't do a full full-spectrum modification, but just the added h-alpha sensitivity modification. I don't have any issue degraded optical peformance with the type of modification I performed.

I only use prime f1.2, f1.4 lens and often shoot at f1.8 or f2 and I see clear image quality downgrade in the corners of the frame at all focal lengths, from 14mm to 85mm. I guess if I stop down to f2.8 it will minimize the corner softness. If you sẻe no problem at all then I think you use zoom lens f2.8?
Isn't "lower pixel=better lowlight" theory debunked? Yeah each pixel gets less light, but the overall sensor is getting the same amount of light. Comparing low vs. high MP cameras on DP Review show almost zero difference between the two at higher ISOs. Plus, higher MP means you have more pixels to work with after the fact.
Sony A1 is stupid expensive ! The Sony A7CR was in this summer more expensive than the Sony A7RV ! Sony A7III have this year been very cheap, even more as used !

Looking at the noise level and dynamic range curves, A7III is the best out there. So I prefer to save money to buy better lenses or to travel.
