I own a Honda crv. Its not as solid in feel to a VW and its not a car your turn and look back at but it is bloody reliable as a motor. It does everything the others do just without perhaps the feel. Thats not saying its cheap etc. Its just what it is. As a family car I really can't fault it. I work on recovery on the motorways and in 16yrs I have only ever had one honda broken down but that was an old import. Lost count how many VW's I have been to. Toyota are reliable as well but I can't say much about them.
The Tiguan is only small SUV I would buy, because it is the only one in my mind that's good, also unlike a lot of them it is quite capable offroad and fast if you get the twin turbo Diesel engine, it also looks like a proper SUV rather than a jacked up hatchback.
I bought my mum a Skoda Yeti a while ago (very similar in proportions to the Tiguan with Skoda being a VW group company) thinking it would just be a nice little mum-mobile. It actually corners like nothing I've ever driven before! On twisty mountain roads it leaves everything behind, including hatchbacks! So when Matt said the Tiguan's ride height is the lowest, I wasn't surprised when he said the Tiguan handles the best. Also to my eye the Tiguan looks the best. I guess the only place the Japanese cars win hands down would be reliability.
Joachim Jacobsen I agree cause we've got both German and Japanese cars. The Japanese cars have low quality built material and has plastic on most parts of the body than German cars. Not to talk about the driving dynamics, most German cars feel more comfortable!

+Stephen Butler There is a big difference in space between the octavia which is a golf and the passat, the wife has a passat and we used an octavia taxi, the other day noticed the difference straight away.
interceptor1986 not really, maybe the same MQB platform as the golf, but it's stretched, and a much larger body. Their is little in space diffence. But if you want replace the Octavia with the Superb, which is superb, much superior to all of the above in space and spec. For me the superb is too big. All your going is giving the kids extra leg room, I (or you) , will still sit the same length way from the pedals. The Octavia already has enough leg room for a 6 footer + in the back. So your swapping rear legroom for driving dynamics. Seems madness to me. Though I love the superb. But I think it'd a car for the over 50. The passat and mondeo are for the road warrior type. the 6 is a nice car, almost got one last time round, they look great in their red colour.
Quality is not about how soft the plastics are. Would be nice to have soft touch in the back and lower down, but crucially, everything is solid, and the fit and finish around the dash and especially the windows and doors in any VW is beautiful, as well as the exterior; around the boot and door shuts. They just look and feel like quality products.
I have a Honda CR-V with 250,000 miles no major problems only regular maintenance. have friends that have new VW always in the shop because they are broke down😑😒
Pretty good review! Nice balanced promotion of carwow without being annoying which is great for a commercial channel. The RAV4's hybrid is a big plus for me personally. I live in a city where I'll get discounted parking and I don't feel comfortable driving in a diesel any more, especially a VW one... Also, isn't hard wearing plastics a good thing in some places, where there will likely be foot scuffs etc.
I bought a 2019 VW Tiguan in April 2019 after driving these 2 plus the Mazda CX-5. No regrets I love it. Wouldn’t mind a bit more power off the line but it’s solid and quiet and comfortable and wonderful on the highway with lots of cargo capacity and door storage bins are huge and lined with carpet - mine has the small 3rd row, a CD player, heated seats and push button start and the long VW Warranty and it looks good outside to me. I don’t mind the conservative styling because it’s classy and will age well. I do miss the LED headlights but the Halogen headlights do melt the snow quickly.

One problem we have in looking at new cars is problems for the owners of medium to large dogs. We have two big labradors (working style and long legged) and have found the current trends in cars are not useful. Firstly the rear lips are far two high for dogs to jump in and out (start to damage legs) especially when the boot floor isn't flat you could use a ramp but then you need more room to store the ramp and no you just can't dump it on the back seat. Secondly all these sloping backs don't just remove head space from rear passengers but they make it difficult for dogs to sit in the boot. When you do a practicality test can you take into account larger dogs, a lot of people have them. I appreciate that good old fashioned low lipped, flat floored, square ended estates have gone out of fashion with companies and designers but the need is still there.
I think crv is much better thought out family design than the 2. It has this special feel when you come in and out. Easy to come in and out, No fighting with the neighbor's foot at the back seat as the floor is flat. Oh i love this feature too much. There's more quality feel front to the tail. There's more rolling than the vw tho. Tiguan have this big mound at the backseat which in long distance for 3 back passengers is not very comfortable. The plastic trims feel so cheap and actually cheap. The space feel crampy even in the driver seat. My husby love his tiguan, family love CRV

Great review as always, Mat. I would not be comfortable with buying a VW. There are problems with the diesel engines, biturbo TSI engines and the DSGs. There's no car without faults but it seems VW (Audi, Seat, Skoda...) just has way more than others. Can't argue with the reasons the VW won this review (or any review in any media for that matter) but I think people will finally start seeing around reviews (in general) and start buying other manufacturer's cars. I would love to have a GTI Golf or even the biturbo diesel Passat with DSG but a) I don't have the money, b) can I trust the company anymore. They just pulled out from WRC and WEC (not officially) because of the emissions crisis and the ludicrous bill they got for it. And yes, I'm just a bitter Astra owner :)

And Peugeot Reliability is less than Volkswagens, not to mention the interior is all plastic, and enjoy the terrible resale value,at least Honda and Toyota have AWD.
Honda's AWD system is a waste of space. More importantly - these car's don't need one at all. They will never go off road. Never. Interior is all plastic? 3008 has higher quality interior than any car in this comparison.
sic22l Some will go off road, some people like myself live in areas or countries where not all the roads are Asphalt and we have a lot of snow, mud etc...so AWD is a must, as for the Interiors to each their own but 1 thing for sure is that Toyota is the ugliest with the most plastic.
Mat, you mention in the vid that the Rav4 comes in "Manual diesel or petrol-hybrid which are FWD, or hybrid auto which is AWD only". Toyota's hybrid system doesn't work with a manual gearbox, so what did you mean to say?
I think Japanese cars are a lot better than Germans. I think the VW is too overrated a brand. I'm not saying they're bad, but I still think the Toyota is a much higher quality car than Tiguan.
Tiguan is quieter on the inside and more spacious. You can get it with 3rd row. My only concern is the US models are made in Mexico. I don’t think i can trust the reliability.
If the Tiguan is like any other VW, it will be in and out of the mechanics garage with issues after 30,000 km. The Honda and the Toyota on the other hand will be very reliable.

CRV for me. I have a 2011 2.0litre diesel CRV with 120,000+ miles. Very reliable
TOYOTA! The best!
If you buy with operational leasing, then Tiguan. In any other case, RAV4 or CRV, since they will be way more reliable over time.
VW Tiguan hands down
yeh until it becomes scrap metal after warranty ends 😂
The Tiguan is smallest and most compact on the outside, biggest volume and boot inside, it also drives better, has amazing AWD, no competition, the other 2 look like minivans.
The new Škoda Kodiaq seems to be even better
I test drove all 3 but i went with the bmw x1. I was impressed by the rav4. I usually hate on Japanese cars. The vw is more stylish to me
Tiguan easily
3008 is smaller from inside, also I would assume it'd be less reliable than the Tiguan on the long run.
Matt is the king of reviews
agreed
UrGamer - Fraz Undoubtedly, he is setting the new benchmark for car reviews!
No. He's not. It's just that generally German cars have better build quality than Japanese cars.
Maybe the big 3, but not the VW, which is pathetic on reliability
Joachim Jacobsen I agree cause we've got both German and Japanese cars. The Japanese cars have low quality built material and has plastic on most parts of the body than German cars. Not to talk about the driving dynamics, most German cars feel more comfortable!
I’d choose the Volkswagen Tiguan
What engine and gearbox did you choose?
Automatic tailgates are slow but really useful when doing grocery shopping.
Oscar Lee VW one is fast but it's an optional extra
I just don't get it when car reviewers keep complaining about something so practical. Do they never do shopping?
Oscar Lee they are complaining not about the automatic tailgate, but rather its speed. Some of them are very slow, like the one on the Toyota. If its not slow, like on most VWs, they normally don't complain
I know they're complaining about the speed, but most of them say it's better off not getting it at all. You'd rather fumble around with it than to wait 5 seconds?
I electronic tail gate are a pita 99% of the time. I'd happily not have and just be frustrated the 1% of time.
I am a long term golf owner I've had seven,I try the Tiguan .hard twitchy ride, gutted ?so we drove the rav 4 quieter , better ride,I suggest you look at the Australian review of these cars much more honest better more accurate ,on and of road,
vw's are total shitboxes and endless moneypits, toyotas are bulletproof
This Rav-4 facelift has to be one of the best facelifts in recent memory. It has literally gone all the way from from being the ugliest and most dated looking to the best looking car in class
The Davis & Dennis Show I think you was drunk when you posted this. Haha
Exactly opposite in my opinion - RAV4 Mk3 (2006-2010) had that great classic design, now RAV4s have got that Japanese robots-transformers toys ugly beasts' style.
Reminds me of a Pruise....
Agreed. I generally don't like toyota's but they did good with the Rav4 facelift. The pre-facelift is beyond fugly. This one actually looks very good.
Tiguan is the best
EXTERIOR: Honda
INTERIOR: Honda
TECH: Volkswagen
PRACTICALITY: Toyota
SPACE AND COMFORT: Honda
PERFORMANCE: Toyota
HANDLING: Volkswagen
DRIVING PLEASURE: Volkswagen
OVERALL: Volkswagen Tiguan and Honda CR-V
Performance wise Tiguan is also better than both
Can we get a Passat v Mondeo v Mazda6?
Shaun Lee..... vs Octavia vs seat leon
+Stephen Butler seat leon and octavia are not in the same group as the Mondeo, passat or mazda6, they are smaller cars.
interceptor1986 not when your inside them. They are defo on par.
Dont know why this time i like tiguan so much. The Design looks perfect in my eyes
It is meant for Europeans after all, the Japanese have different tastes. Maybe the Asians don't like the Tiguan!
@Yule Calma Honda and Toyota also make very good reliable cars, i chose a Camry over Passat because of the naturally aspirated engine
@Yule Calma i went to japan, i didn't see any vw😅
This is a tight choice however Volkswalgen T comes first, Honda Crv second and Rav4 third out of personal experience on Kenyan roads
That CRV is actually really well equiped, i have a 2013 CRV US Spec, It has nothing lol
Das Auto!!! straight outta Wolfsburg
I really like VW's built in Germany, those built at the Kaluga plant in Russia are shit.
I choose Rav for reliability. Cant beat that.
It depends, if you buy second hand maybe but new the Tiguan and german cars drive better
Wow! I like that. The Tiguan wins!!👍👍
RAV4 hybrid is ridiculously expensive (at least in most EU countries), it simply makes no sense.
Your VW will soon start to fall apart just wait and see.
@@hermanhayes750 I’ve had 5 VW’s and my best friend Don buys them too. I’ve not had any issues so far since 2007. He says his 2 have been running fine and he came out of a Tiguan and GTI before his current models. My sister has an Atlas from first year it came out. She only complains about the gas mileage with these high ass prices.
Have you had problems with yours.
@@2004cyrus Nothing but problems with my Golf, 2 Passat, Touran and Octavia. VAG never ever again you find much better quailty for less money elsewhere.
tiguan the best!!!
TJ Hsiao wtff there is no maserati involved in the review smh😳😂😂
maserati from 70 000euro? in this group?
I
Seriously do you recommend a tiguan then I'm confused what to go for really like the BMW X1 too but bit expensive
well done on the winner mat! the r-line would be my choice!
I appreciate that good old fashioned low lipped, flat floored, square ended estates have gone out of fashion with companies and designers but the need is still there.
had the same problem. but if you go for a large suv instead of these tiny ones the dogs can jump in the footwell 1st then climb on the seat
The Rav4 is the best overall .. it has a bit of everything but the most long term reliability and such... resale value is great too
How? The Kia Sorento is god for the price.
Really enjoyed your review. I have been on the fence about the VW Tiguan and think your review has helped me make my choice. Cheers friend.
People bashing the 3008 inthecomments probably havent seen or driven the new 3008 at all. Its a great car and build quality is really good, rivals my old 3 series if i do say so myself
Thank you for measuring the ride height /driving position height. This is essential for people buying an SUV thinking it would be easier to get in and out of. Please include this in your reviews.
Tiguan is not in range of other two cars. Namely Tiguan is Golf on high wheels...After 17 years of Volkswagen we decided to get a Honda ( CR-V and Civic ) and I can tell you this was excellent decision.
They will be more reliable but it comes down to personal preference which you like more.
Look into it. Better than Honda.
Engine reliability?? I for for HONDA
Honda had problems with oil dilution and transmissions, VW with carbon build-up.
@@trespasser121 Dont be ignorant. Tho true for 1.5L turbo engines, WHICH IS NOT THIS CAR REVIEWED, it was only a handful among nearly 900 THOUSAND units sold (per year, that is). I'd take that any day over a VW. Toyota... well, faulty RAV4 engine affected nearly 100 000 cars, which in the extreme scenario, could catch on fire. So... Still, any day over a VW.
Not a particular fan of Japanese design. VW group always have good all rounders, and the best engine range. The Peugeot might be briliant, however where I stay, it has a horrible reputation. Rav 4 is quite popular here in RSA though, as well as the Honda. For what it is worth, these cars do the job they are designed for and for their segment.
3008 or Kodiaq for me :)
Ccleanerable the kodiaq looks so nice which is irritating cause us Americans just get the ugly VW Atlas
I would only buy the Tiguan.
tiguan the best
Tiguan> Rav4> CRV
Matt is a king of reviews
Thank you so much Mat. Been waiting for this head2head. I definitely can make my decision now.
Matt this question is for you.You mentioned that the car the CR-V is quiet rolly Polly while on a curve.Looking a the car dimensions I do think that it's quiet a large spacious family car but do you think that you would go around that corner so hard in that car especially if you got your family in there especially with your kids?
You really really got a point
Haha, during the 3 people in the back seat test in the RAV 4, the guy to the left gets all awkward because the other two disagree with him!
Tiguan looks great, and just wins the review, but how does it compare for reliability and issues, over time? That's what matters too.
Least reliable car
I love your energy and originality during your review :) Great face to face ! From France
CR-V wins in my opinion... but it doesn't matter that much, 3008 stumps them all :)
Crappy opinions you have then. 3008 ahahhashha,, what a joke.
Yellow Waffle I'm not french, I don't own and I don't even like many french cars... but the new 3008 is just spot on.
nemanja milosevic spot on in the design as well.. .ok I understood... ahahahhaha
VW would be my pick
I'm with you on that man... CR-V wins this one!
VW all the way
Got to be the Vw
Did you get one?
Hyy, you are the best guy in this fiel. About the cars, where is KUGA and old Forester ?
I chose Tiguan, is more sporty on the road.
Volkswagen Tiguan looks amazing and solid, something batman or james bond would drive. The other two look cheap, bloated and plastic.
"Schnitzel" originally came from Italy! We here in Austria optimized it to the "Wiener Schnitzel"...
So it would be better to say "Sushi against Sauerkraut" 😉
What about "sushi vs kebab"? 😂
The price of the vw repairs will be more than double the other two...so it's not a likely competitor
Good quality or low price? What do you prefer?
@@YourLocalUkrainianGerman Honda and Toyota are waaay more reliable than Volkswagen.
@@V.D.22Honda yes, Toyota is crap.
@@YourLocalUkrainianGerman Wrong on that one. A Toyota will be more reliable than any make of german car. Also, on german cars you pay a lot of extra money for equipment that comes standard on other makes. German manufacturers don't give good value for money. Americans don't buy many german cars compared to the European countries who are still in thrall to 'the badge'. The U.S is full of Hondas and Toyotas.
@@briantitchener4829 I know that. But I still don't understand, how they shouldn't give enough for that price. Sure, Volkswagen didn't have many systems earlier on board. But that quality in (almost) every German car… (except e.Go Life 90, VW T-Cross).
Rav4 for sure
this segment is filled with lots of alternatives.
Afzal Shams So what's your point?
Matt's best review so far perhaps he should bang his head at the start of every review i agree the tiguan is the best it looks so classy and well built.
Iikka Lankinen spot on. Good figures on the diesels, but awful reliability and sludge making machines!
Likka pendejo!!!
LOL the people saying the 3008 haha do you know that you cannot even get a AWD on it? it is not even optional, pure bullshit, call it a crossover?
Ffs Matt had me crying in laughter when he started banging his head on that picnic table. Could just imagen a kid doing that 😂😂😂😂
you should have got the tiguan with the virtual cockpit
Well the car probably would have added a lot of value
Tiguan wins hands down!!! It’s sweet as German chocolate cake!!!
Tiguan is quieter on the inside and more spacious. You can get it with 3rd row. My only concern is the US models are made in Mexico. I don’t think i can trust the reliability.
New to this channel, first video and bang on SUBSCRIBED! Good job Matt
So ~ tiguan is the best one?
yes
Hey Matt please can u do a review of the new Ford Kuga would like to see that. thanks, great videos matt, keep them coming. :)
If the Tiguan is like any other VW, it will be in and out of the mechanics garage with issues after 30,000 km. The Honda and the Toyota on the other hand will be very reliable.
thank you for the good review. helps me a lot in buying the tiguan. good work matt!
My mum did have the Honda CR-V 2001
Tommy Dobson a superb car! They are the best built by far!
the new peugeot 3008,the nissan qashqai the new mazda cx5 and the new value for money mitsubishi asx are worth a look above the above.if you see what i mean.personally the new pug and mazda are my choice.
ASX is too old and it shows. It's also much smaller.
Honda is the best!!!
Seems silly commenting on the "cheap" plastics in the VW. This is a car used by families and those plastics are incredibly tough and strong. The lower portion of my golf interior is the same, yet everything matches and lines up properly. Even the expensive audis are the same.
They used low-spec Tiguan and top trim CR-V ans RAV4. It wasn't a fair comparison.
Bit late to the review but I bought a used 2017 Tiguan SEL and very happy with it at the moment :)
Still going firm?
@@vhborges yeah, I really like it. I have back problems where I have two dessicated discs and I had a Qashqai before. Reason I bought this was for the different adjestments I can make to the seat (electric leather) and although I'm not comfortable all the time it's comfortable majority and the discomfort is mainly down to my back, Only issue I've had lately is that I've started to get drips of water come in through the rear view mirror and also the drivers footwell, which is odd
Where's the Mazda CX5?
Make a race of honda vs toyota
And the Xtrail, Tucson, Sorento, Outlander, CX5 , the kajdar/koleos and the new 3008/5008 ? That would be a good video test of 60 minutes duration a least !
Was sold on the RAV4, but bought a Tiguan for $10K less similarly equipped
Could you please review the 2019 Mercedes V class?
Great informative review
I'd take a Honda any day.
superb review Watson
Honda created this segment......the CR-V is peerless
