We bought the Tiguan for our daughter 15 year old for her first car. 2019 SE 4 Motion with the sunroof. Great vehicle for a young driver to start. lots of room. Not to much power but enough. Confident driving with the all wheel drive, in rain, snow. We are in TX, so mostly rain to deal with. Like it a lot so far. Got it used with 16,000 miles for $25k. Not bad at all about a year ago.
Both are great. My wife has a Rav4, I just bought a 2018 Tiguan. Just my opinion, but I like the simpler aesthetic of the Tiguan. It doesn’t feel like it’s trying so hard to be relevant. Solid car. Both are good choices though.
Had to buy a car and had a budget of $15K. Bought a 2011 RAV4 Limited and didn’t hesitate. With 156K it’s still a very long life ahead of it. Not a spot of rust. Reliability may not sound sexy but my Rav’s previous owner loved his trade-in value when he traded it for the new 2019 RAV4.
I suppose that perhaps the best choice might be the more available and popular car for the region. In europe, VW parts are widely available and there are many power trains to choose from.
Mom of 3 kids here. I am Tiguan owner and when kids friend wants to come with us, can’t beat that third row and flexibility is such a relief. Absolutely gorgeous car
I tested both cars the RAV4 in the Hybrid (4X4) version and decided on the RAV4 for the economy quietness in city driving also the near instant power feel of the electrical motors and was cheaper and will last forever or as my wife say i will decide to change cars again even if i don't need to
Originally Body-On-Frame was the money maker and marketed as toughness, but strategy regrouped under the Unibody structure to emphasize Third Row Seating and the lovable All Wheel Drive system. Crossovers maintained the traditional SUV shape and appeal, especially by including luxury items previously featured on the larger heavier platform. Despite their structural differences, over time the general public would refer to both of these configurations simply as SUV’s.
If all one cares about is reliability and getting from A to B Toyotas are the way to go, no argument. Granted, you pay the Asian car tax: ugly and ages even worse, total bore to drive, outdated tech/transmissions/engines, less refined. My 2016 GTI has been going strong without issues and is a joy to drive, sit in and look at. Would have been depressing to drive a Corolla all along.
@@nadjibnadjib9833 Been driving a 2018 Tiguan Highline, It's average about 10km/ltr on 70/30 Hwy/City. It takes regular gas. I find it pretty satisfied.
What is nice about the VW is that it looks like a more premium product rolling down the street. You also don’t see as many on the road so they stand out more vs the sea of RAV4s. I own both an new VW atlas and a Toyota 4Runner. Both great vehicles with completely different missions. I took a leap of faith with VW but with the warranty and how we keep our cars about 7-8 years it should provide a trouble free experience.
All I see are Tiguans with their yellow old fashioned non-LED lights. I barely see any of the new RAV4's. Tiguans are selling at $4000 discount because nobody wants old fashion styling and the front end looks ugly to me.
That's why I hurried up and bought a 2019. The 2020 Volkswagen warranty decreases to 4 years and 50,000 miles. That's above average for mainstream vehicles and in-line with luxury makes, but it's nowhere near as good as it was.
i own a 2018 tiguan sel premium and i use all seasons in the snow and the awd is a beauty! if i slip by a few centimeters, i get put back on track immediately.
Volkswagen always makes faultless ergonomics, you can never complain about their quality, handling, comfort, and practicality, while Toyota makes the most reliable vehicles in the world and some of the most fuel efficient. I would take the Tiguan in a heartbeat.
I’ve had the 2019 Tiguan for 2 years now and I can say no problems at all. And the power is good I don’t think it’s slow whatsoever. It’s very reliable.
@@ic_gaming849 lol 2 years, try keeping it for over 10 years. Has never had a check engine light on, still going strong, it’s the base silver trim. Replaced the stock muffler with a turbo muffler to give it some deep sound.
I like the look of the RAV4 but I think it age badly, the Tiguan is understated but will last. The VW build quality seems more refined so it's the VW for me.
Love my '19 Tiguan...owned now for five months and trouble free...( SEL Premium, 4 Motion AWD 60,000 miles ) Just had the oil change service, rear end alignment, filter replacement, tire rotation, and inspection. I had a 2010 tiguan for 2 years and I loved that car, never had a problem until i got Tboned... but even then it was still a great car, built like a tank, I came out un injured and I ran over a stop sign and into a hospital sign. Great car.
Jon Smith you are so naive. I’ve owned an ‘07 passat, a ‘12 amarok, and a ‘06 golf v. I had all of these for a while, and had barely any issues. The only thing i replaced was the abs on the amarok...
Tiguan definitely!!!!! Much more premium and nicer. More torque. More classy.. Q5-esque... More features.. Oh yes!! 1. Tiguan 2. Honda CRV 3. CX 5 or Rav 4
Instagram fans picked the Toyota due to its much higher reliability rating. The Tiguan (a portmanteau), on the other hand, is in a higher class than the Rav4, and was actually introduced as a fully capable off-road compact SUV. Arguable, the most capable in its class. It came with a skid plate and more off-road tuning. That earlier version however, was discontinued due to lack of interest in North American. As for the crease, it is a styling cue to give the car a little less height, so it doesn't look like the side of a barn. Fit an finish and interior is a specialty of the VW Group they are the best in the industry. As for the car being similar I'm not sure how. Perhaps if you drove the cars more aggressively or pushed them closer to their limits (think autobahn), the difference would become more prominent. How confident would you be in the Rav4 at 110mph? Also, the VW has the more refined -- near luxury -- interior. Even the plastic is a better grade. The Rav4 makes no pretense about its purely utilitarian nature -- orange rubber? Anyway, the third-row seating in the VW is perfect for an additional pair of small kids.
@@chernowitz Choosing the RAV-4 over the Tiguan is a good financial decisions. Because if you are buying anything in this class, mind as well is reliable, but if you want something more exciting get a luxury SUV then.

Good review ! I drove the Tiguan as a ZipCar for a while. It was probably a base level car but it had good ride and nice interior quality, what I really didn't like was the engine/transmission. It felt so sluggish, not even slow but just unresponsive. If it had a better engine/transmission like the EU specs it would be so much more desirable. CX-5 is still the king for now.
@René oo People who buy Toyota's! Plus, you can save even more money because you can pass it down to your kids, knowing they will be in a safe and reliable car.
I love both cars but ended up with the RAV4 w/AWD. The gas mileage is phenomenal, reliability is top notch and the high resale value just did it for me.
Having driven both, I think the Tiguan handles more sportily (outside of snowy circumstances), has better refinement, and looks better to me. However, I would take the Rav - the handling is decent, the interior is classy enough for my liking, and the Hybrid option means I could drive to work and use near to no fuel. Saving money on fuel and servicing costs means I get to spend the rest on a fun second-hand car weekender/track car (E36 coupe, MX5, 86). Win-win to me, surprised you guys didn't think of that!
Tiguan is a high-tech luxury car compared to the Rav4. The RAV4 looks like a plastic toy car. But hey I get it, historically it’s been reliable. Nobody knows or can predict the new Tiguan’s long term reliability. I own one ☝️, 16k Miles and zero issues.
I loved this comparison and review!! Buying the new Rav4 very soon for myself. I am glad you guys took it out on the snow, I was very curious as to how it would perform!! Thanks TH
It may be a fantastic car until the Bi-TDI breaks.. That engine is the most unreliable engine VW developed in the last decade.. It's so bad, that even VW-salesmen advice to chose another engine. My brother in law is the executive director of a VW commercial vehicles brand-dealership. He forbid his employees to order demo-cars with the Bi-TDI-engine because he doesn't want the drama when the engine breaks.

No blank switches, about the same price as sparse spec Q5...
+sic22l - don't understand! Just like the RAV4? Perhaps you mean just like a 3008! Except 3008 doesn't have a HUD, a very good 360 cam, a beige interior option, adaptive suspension. (But I like the 3008). Yes, crossovers are expensive! Cheers.
Tiguan for sure. Tuning capability, German Engineering, and just looks Business/classy. Nothing bad about the Rav 4 really but if it were me I’d rather take a girl out on a date in a Tiguan R Line than a Toyota Rav 4 lol.
My Toyota reliability was poor reliability. Fiction. Three cars, poor reliability. I did like how the 2005 RAV 4 drove with a stick. Too bad the engine went, water pump went shocks went, clutch slave went - all before 3 years/ 60K miles.

I love what Toyota is doing with there vehicles these days. They are finally putting style and passion in its lineup AGAIN. There are far more Toyota models I would consider driving today than just four five years ago. It appears that finally Toyota is putting some real value into inspiring design from the top all the way to the bottom of the fleet. The luster has returned and I am excited about the future of the industry.
Toyota does win on reliability - eyes blinded. But it disappoints in terms of tech and driving experience. VW knows how to bring features from its luxury brand down to its economy brand giving you the sensation of being ahead of the crowd. Toyota does the opposite. It treats its Lexus brand as an upgrade package to Toyota. My choice is easy: VW all the way.
Durability and quality issues are something to not to take lightly. I'm not a super fanboy for Toyota but the track record for VW quality leaves a lot to be desired especially where I live. VW is not in any way seen as a good decision. Diesel emissions is a filthy issue. Funny enough Skoda is starting to be taken more seriously in this country.
Toyota's logic are "make it simple" and "it will last". Think about it. If you put HIGH technology on a car, you're also increasing the maintenance cost and difficulty in fixing it. That's basic logic I guess. Stop complaining about the driving experience as well. Buy a sports car if you're looking for the "DRIVING EXPERIENCE".
Something to note about the Tiggy- Eco/comfort mode really dulls the throttle. Sport mode feels much better for power delivery. Honestly, for the average joe, the power is good. For Auto Journalists who drive BMWs and Alfa's a bunch, it feels slow, but thats a matter of perspective.
@@Didi78180x yes, I agree but all gas models Rav4s since 2014 are equipped either with a CVT or a manual for the European market. You can choose a diesel one which has a 6speed auto and the Hybrid with eCVT. I was referring to the gas models equipped with a CVT. I know a few people that one such vehicles and they still run like new. They told me to change the transmission fluid every 35-50k miles to keep the trans fresh.
And you will be 100% sure that Toyota will not try to cheat you in any way with CO2 emissions. So you will not end up with a nerfed engine three years later.
Sounds like you got burned. We don't do emissions in Florida so other than contributing to greenhouse gasses that pollute the air and cause the temperature of the planet go up every year, we were largely unaffected by that whole thing.
@@Zogin_EPICH At least they admitted it. Other companies have done the same thing. Ford is being sued right now for it. I'm sure if you do the research Toyota isn't innocent either.

You missed the best part of VW. It by far has the best handling than any other car. And RAV4 has the worst interiors which makes its look like an alien spaceship.VW is super polished and looks executive style. I dont like the shape of RAV4, inside and outside. Toyota just sells because it runs for years. Nothing else is good about it. VW anyday. Thanks for the video. Also, we drive for half year in non-wintery conditions, with no snow. VW again beats all competition in this aspect, its a beautiful car to drive in summers too.
This discussion is ridiculous. If you're leasing for up to 3 years, it doesn't much matter. If you're buying "long term" the Toyota wins every time. Much better reliability and resale value. Look at any 10 year old example of a higher mileage Volkswagen vs a comparable Toyota. That's where you'll find the real deal.
I have the 2019 Tiguan and not as fun to drive as my old Tiguan but it's ok. I'd rather have the Rav honestly but the Tig I picked up at about 5k less than the average Rav4s around me. Tiguan is a pretty nice driver experience, not thrilling at . . . all. . . but nice. Smooth and quiet at highway speeds even in the 70mph range.
I don't understand why they de-tuned the engine from the 210HP of the old one. We had a 2012 Tig in the top trim and it was pretty fine but could have done better. Detuning was in the wrong direction. Didn't get a new one. Moved on from VW entirely.
Patrick Sullivan Because the old Tsi is gas guzzler that requires premium fuel for the compact suv that is the size of subcompact. New Tiguan is almost two-Tiguan of old plus 20 more torque will make big size suv easy to tow plus terribly fuel efficient as the result of miller cycle. Some people are reporting 30 mpg beating epa easily.
It all depends what your priorities are, the Tiguan is the best looking suv on the market, and of course toyota has the best reliable cars, looks or durability, Comfort but not as durable or not that great looking but pretty sturdy car, talking about the look of the interiors of course, since the outside purely depends on each person
People who are pro-Toyota RAV4 talk about reliability etc but those who are pro-Tiguan really LOVE the car! Also, I have to say I don't understand people trashing VW reliability. My ex-wife still has a 2004 VW Touran 2.0 TDI DSG that we bought from new which has done (so far) 500,000 km without major problems. I am the proud owner of a 2021 Tiguan which looks so much classier than my neighbours' Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV4. First annual service cost the equivalent of $250 at the main dealer which is very reasonable. It's nice to have choice but for me the VW Tiguan is the real deal in this segment. You can have a Toyota or you can have a VW member of your family that will also last you for years with styling which is ageless.
I picked my Tiguan up a few days ago, before that I had the kuga, and I’m shocked at how much more powerful the kuga was. I’m struggling to get used to the slow pull away speed at roundabouts. Nice car in every other way though.
Coming from a Mercedes-Benz S-Class, I found the Tiguan to be a great car and I really like it. However, I ultimately chose the RAV4 Adventure/Trail, especially given my current special situation. Despite the high price of Toyota, which isn't fully justified except for its reliability, I needed a car that I could depend on, and Toyota delivers on that front. While German cars are generally superior, they require frequent servicing, which Toyota does not.
Good review. would of been better to compare the top trim Rav4 since you had the top trim Tiguan. Rav4 in Limited trim looks drastically different inside and out.
I love Toyotas! They are extremely reliable. My 2010 Corolla S still drives like new with 400k. 2007 Rav4 Sports V6 with 180K, and 2008 FJ Cruiser Trail Teams with 230k. All original powertrain. Had to change wheelbearings, brakes, alternators (FJ and Corolla) which would be considered regular wear and tear and then the regular oil change. And that’s it. Still drives excellent. Very cheap maintenance. High mileage on the Corolla because it is cheaper on gas compared to the Rav4 and FJ. The Rav4 V6 is what my wife drives so it’s lower in mileage in spite being a 2007. FJ is the most fun to drive off-road and during winters.
The Tiguan is a great car but if you want reliability and are going to keep the car for a while I would say get the RAV4 Hybrid Limited with Adv. Technology Package. I have driven both and the Hybrid RAV4 is a really nice vehicle and gets amazing gas mileage it is a little expensive but you can make a deal since the 2020 are about to come out.

I tested both cars the RAV4 in the Hybrid (4X4) version and decided on the RAV4 for the economy quietness in city driving also the near instant power feel of the electrical motors and was cheaper and will last forever or as my wife say i will decide to change cars again even if i don't need to

I see plenty of Tiguan and atlas’s now
I have not seen the 2019 RAV4 on the road yet. I do see a lot of Volkswagen Tiguans.
All I see are Tiguans with their yellow old fashioned non-LED lights. I barely see any of the new RAV4's. Tiguans are selling at $4000 discount because nobody wants old fashion styling and the front end looks ugly to me.
How long did you own the Atlas before it wouldn't start?
The 2019 VW has a 6 year warranty! That is a huge difference!
Where I'm from the Rav4 comes with a 6 year warranty as well. Toyota also gives you double those years for the battery included in the hybrid models.
That's why I hurried up and bought a 2019. The 2020 Volkswagen warranty decreases to 4 years and 50,000 miles. That's above average for mainstream vehicles and in-line with luxury makes, but it's nowhere near as good as it was.
Steve Martin I use to work at VW, never buy a new Tiguan, they need constant work, the sunroofs leak very quickly as well. And consistently
And you will need that warranty since modern VW products are junk
Still! gonna! break! after! that! time!

Volkswagen always makes faultless ergonomics, you can never complain about their quality, handling, comfort, and practicality, while Toyota makes the most reliable vehicles in the world and some of the most fuel efficient. I would take the Tiguan in a heartbeat.

I LIKE how you compare two cars! Not a boring one.
I think the Toyota is a better choice.

The Toyota is good, but if looks and feels like a utility vehicle. I'd get the Tiguan, it drives better and it feels more premium.

The RAV4 suspension is stiff, but it handles high loads without a problem.

VW is your choice = your wallet.
DSG gearbox is nightmare, very costly to repair
Toyota's logic are "make it simple" and "it will last". Think about it. If you put HIGH technology on a car, you're also increasing the maintenance cost and difficulty in fixing it. That's basic logic I guess. Stop complaining about the driving experience as well. Buy a sports car if you're looking for the "DRIVING EXPERIENCE".

HAHAHA the best intro scene ever XD
If you were the too tune it the the same power as the gti it would be allot better
Milage meand means nothing. Its all about years and engine hours. There are tons of 06 and older american cars running like new
