  • The recipe for lime & clay plaster will vary depending on the site. I have done some experimenting with the clay on my site to find out what would be the best recipe for my strawbale build. Using natural plasters like clay and lime plasters is relatively simple but can seem a little daunting when first starting, it did to me. The best way to get over that is to experiment with small patches and see what happens, observe and then scale up. Here I present the results from my experimenting with natural lime and clay plasters and then finish preparing the walls from the first coat of natural plaster.
This is my first attempt using natural plasters, but when it comes down to getting it right or wrong my approach is "what is the worst that can happen?". In this case the worst case is that I have to remove the plaster because is isn't good enough. A bit of extra labour and a bit or extra cost. The learning experience is well worth it. Hopefully I show that getting out and doing it yourself is not difficult, anyone can do this!
I hope you enjoy the video, let me know what you think in the comments.

Did you end up using the qual parts mix for the scratch coat?

I think I ended up using just a clay and sand scratch coat as it got a bit expensive mixing in the lime. The thing with that is the boundary between the lime plaster and the clay scratch can cause issues. However, I didn't use a high proportion lime plaster, this video has a bit more info in: ruclips.net/video/3-54ZU56tXk/видео.html. If you can't find what you're looking for then just shout and I'll see if I can answer.
