Love Bee. I invited her to my village to do a talk on strawbale building in 2005. Our village hall was derelict, and rebuilding it with straw would have made it the first strawbale build in our county....the economic benefits to the village would have been substantial. But the audience was mostly local farmers who couldn't see past their own ignorance, so it never happened. So sorry that Bee's breath was wasted on them. I'm trialling her info on the lime stabilised soil though, as it'll do so much good on my smallholding.
Perhaps you could inform those farmers that the USDA has built its first straw bale home - if you do a search its part of the USDA financed homes for low income, first time home buyers.
@@AurorasEyeFilms You are so fortunate to have the opportunity to spend time with her. I would love to listen to her in person she is so intelligent. 😊👍🏻
Thank you for your kind words. 🙏🏽Yes it was a joy to learn about this amazing building technique, since then we have tryed to incorporate it into our buildings.
Lime is great because of what it can do. The only thing that sucks is you have to wear all kinds of protective stuff because it’ll eat through your skin or if you get it in your eye it’s going to do a lot of damage. My cousin was ignorant to this and walked in wet lime when we were making a mortar and it melted his shoes and ate up the bottom of his feet. He had to go to the ER because of that. If you all decide to use lime just make sure you wear eye protection, gloves, and wear a dust mask when mixing it dry.
instead of straw better to use husk of wheat or rice in the lime putty since tht gives better binding over straw bales. additional binder can be damaged/insect infested wheat flour or white cement or OPC cement. for shining can add eggs, for water proofing can add sesame/flaxseed oil in the putty.
Question...... what was the outcome of insulation biodigester in straw in sub zero winter temp? Did it work? I need to know for the sometdhingni had planned for the uk
Hello watching from Africa Great video can this kind of lime be use to stabilize Adobe bricks we have a lot of shells here some use cement to stabilize their bricks and others just use mud so I was wondering if the lime can work because is cheaper than the cement
yeah but i live at limestone mine and kiln in the nex village. it is unbelievable that there was a hill but now is a 100m deep hole. and quicklime making was producinv carbon dioxide not only from fuel which is coal but also releasing the carbon in the limestone it self to form quick lime (CaCO3+huge amount of heat => CaO + CO2) and also likely releasing NOx and SOx because the temperature and it using coal as fuel. and they claim using green material ps. and also it releasing heat to atmosphere to make slakedlime
I am allegic to hay and straw. Does anyone have experience living around such buildings with the same allergies? Does the plaster still aggrevate the allergy?

lime is defiantly a great alternative to cement!
Nice

Credible woman
agreed!
How do you prevent Termites , especially in the tropics, when you use straw?
The lime helps, the straw much be covered and socked before, so all the sugars are out.
Go to rural areas of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Indian Punjab. You would find them staking hay in mud.
They mostly have earthen/ mud houses too
👍
The straw build uk website is down and there is no other trace of Bee. Is she OK? Has anyone got a contact?

nice shot, but I can hardly understand what Bee is saying because of the music.
really? it sounds fine on my speakers, is anyone else having problems?
+AurorasEyeFilms Maybe just a slightly lower background music may make it easier for non-native speakers to understand.
I also found the background music too loud, I could hear her most of the time, but sometimes the music was overpowering her voice...
Sounds fine to me!
The music choice is great, but definitely a lowering of the volume would help.

Try hemp or bamboo
straw and lime are so expensive now days

She said if the lime isn't reactive, don't even use it. I wonder is there an easy off hand way to see if the lime is still reactive?
Add water
Sand is expensive in Pakistan? O.o
I don't think so. it's about 1$ per ton
