Amazing how all the little stuff adds up! I can only imagine how much all my tools, compressor, hose reel, etc. weighs. Glad I have the washer & dryer in the garage of the toy hauler...

Great video topic! As I can attest from personal experience, front storage cargo weight makes a huge difference. I found out (after having a frame flex issue) that I just because you have a large storage compartment area, it is very easy to exceed the weight capacity / weight rating if you fill it full. I used to throw everything and the kitchen sink into my storage compartments for "just in case" I needed it. I experienced a frame flex / weld failure that luckily was caught early. After weighing my 5th wheel storage compartment items, I discovered I had 700 lbs of cargo in a drop frame storage compartment ( two e-bikes and many house batteries). I have since move the E-bikes to a rear bike carrier and pulled out all non-essential items out of the storage compartments and cut weight in half to approx. 350 lbs. Even this relatively small amount of weight removed made a difference in how my truck and trailer frame handles the pin weight.

Great job. I think must if not all would be very surprised at just how much extra weight your stuff adds up to. I no it really opened my eyes thanks

Thank you for videos. With your truck & trailer videos, I realize how wrong I have been about towing.

Nice observation about scale zero. I (Dave) used to calibrate lots of test equipment, including scales. Ones like yours usually use high quality force gages (probably one on each corner) for the measurement system. Our calibration process was to apply then remove the full scale mass 3 times before starting the calibration. Most would return to zero or within 1 or 2 digits. Mechanical scales, even good ones, didn't always go back to zero.

7:26 All things being fair, I'm curios just how much that slide-out tray is. I think some folks see these things pre-installed and don't consider them additional to the dry weight from the manufacturer. Great topic though, I'm always telling my wife that she has too many blankets and we can't carry them all or else we'll go overweight. Secretly of course it's because I must have my PBC smoker with me instead. ;)

Everything adds up that you add to your trailer, but most don't balance it out, and load heavy stuff high inside the trailer, which can cause you to be top heavy. Really cool you are show this to people, thanks.

Fortunately I don’t have nearly that much stuff. I’m kind of a minimalist. It certainly adds up. Have you taken rig to a Cat scale? It would be interesting to see where you are in terms of weight ratings. My last weight was 700# under GCVWR. That was with a full fresh water tank which I never travel with. The fresh water capacity on this little trailer is 40 gallons. The tank is mostly over the axles. Apparently the check valve on the water pump failed and filled my fresh water tank without my knowledge. I now check my fresh water level before I travel if I’ve been on city water for a long time. I really like your channel and have learned a lot even though I’ve been doing this a while.

I definitely need to go through our fifth wheel and get rid of stuff! Always carry more crap than I need. Sometimes is a dumping ground for kitchen items you don’t use at home but don’t want to get rid of it.

The most accurate way would be to take it to a truck scale and weigh it with and without the tow vehicle

A google search for the Onan 5500 weight is around 280 lbs. which is way more than I would have thought

My biggest problem is extra weight from my first responder equipment then the other things for camping. I know my down fall and trying to get the weight down.

As I watch video on RV reviewes and I see that with some of the TT's whether it's a fifth wheel or bumper or reciever pull. I'm looking how much storage that us commented in storage just inside of the trailer alone. It gets ne thinking that if you were to actually utilize all that usable space. Your trailer would be over your gross weight limit just with the inside storage alone being utilized. Sometimes I think with all the usable storage space inside the trailer, you'll never really fill all that space and be under the gross weight limit.

Reduce pin weight by adding weight behind the axles.

  • @herb7877

My guess is ~1k. Not including anything in the inside of the trailer like food dishes ..... nor water or waste tanks. I was amazed when I weighted ours. I was in a disagreement with my wife. I was over on my guess but she was way under. We did some purging. Once a year we take everything out and de-junk. If we haven't used it in a year, then we toss unless it's something like a jack or one time emergency thing we may need. With a big storage compartment you tend to fill it b/c you have the space and maybe, just maybe you may need it...
