  • In this video I explore the complex relationship between Judeau and Griffith. Today I attempt to answer the question “Did Judeau hate Griffith?” I combed through the Golden Age Arc anime and manga in hopes of figuring this out. The answer I came to surprised me.

Here is another theory, Corkus knew guts would fuck everything upp thats why he hated him. I honestly think one of the reasons why Judeau didn't survive, is that he didn't see value in himself. Given that he thought he was only a jack of all trades and someone worthy to be valued as a whole, is ultimately what caused his own downfall. As intelligent and insightful as he was, he wasn't able to see that those were things that he had himself, and therefore he doomed himself to the fate of the hands of another

Judeau didn't have a dream, much like Guts, but unlike Guts he has no strive to find one. He is complacent with his place in the world. Judeau very much loves Casca, and just wants the best for her. He doesn't see himself as an equal to Griffith. He does see Guts on that level and knows Guts and Casca could work as a couple. It would save Casca from the heartbreak and if they had gotten together it would have prevented Guts from leaving.

Judeau was one of my favorite characters also, but no matter how great he was, he just couldn't survive the eclipse for narrative purposes. The reason no member but the main 3 and Rickert could survive was because the eclipse is, to some level, signify Guts going beyond humanity and going against fate and what seems possible. He ascends to a different level and is able to fight monsters. Before the eclipse, characters like Judeau could stand with Guts because even though they couldn't fight as well as him, they could fight WITH him. Post eclipse, for them to be able to be in the story they'd have to at least be able to survive against apostles. It would take a lot away from Gut's character imo, the only reason Rickert got to live is that he was a kid and besides firing a rocket has been essentially removed from all fighting. But that's ok because he was never really much of a fighter even in the BotH, Judeau however, was.

It would have been interesting to see what would've become of Judeau if he survived the eclipse. I'd imagine his adroitness and craftiness would have served him well to ward off many apostles. Heck, he could have served as a useful "sidekick" to Guts in hunting down Griffith; he sort has similar qualities to the Tim Drake Robin, who primarily uses intellect and superior tactics to outmaneuver his opponents'. This would have eliminated the "necessity" of adding Isidro to the story (since he's acting as the proverbial Robin to Guts' Batman).

I think Judeau still being around with Guts after the Eclipse would legitimately make things too easy for him. And I’m not even talking about dealing with the Apostles, I’m more so talking about maintaining Guts’ mental health. Like if Judeau was traveling with Guts during the Black Swordsman and Lost Children’s Arcs then he probably would have easily noticed Guts’ slow descent into insanity, and stopped him before he ended up reaching the dark place that he was in by the end of the Lost Children’s Arc. Essentially what I’m saying is that Judeau kinda had to die in order to make the story happen.

@@KingCam20 I love Judeau, but I think these set of circumstance would take away from a massively core aspect of Berserk. Right up until (SPOILER!) Casca get's her mind back (SPOILER END!) the biggest thing about the story is that NO one understands Gut's pain and what he's been through except the one who caused it, the only other person that could is mentally crippled, all others who were there are dead. That's huge to the story.
I think something that would kind of help accomplish the feel of what you're looking for while not taking so much away from the narrative would be a scene where somehow Gut's meets the souls of the BotH and they acknowledge they've seen everything he's gone through since the eclipse.

I don’t think Judeau particularly liked Griffith and knew that Griffith just saw others as pawn’s to help him achieve his goals. Judeau seems to understand his own place in the world. I think he also sees that Guts has the potential to become better than Griffith, although he doesn’t probably understand why, or it could just be that he liked Guts more, which is odd, as Guts put up so many barriers, as he didn’t want to get close to anyone. In my opinion, Judeo was pretty much represented as the observer (our position) of the golden age. Or that's how I feel. Just like Judeo I felt like I saw Griffith & many of the other characters from his perspective a lot.

I disagree, I don't think Judeau hates griff, 1) j recognizing that Griffith puts up a facade 2) him recognizing that griff's dream would be more important to him than Casca doesn't mean hatred just means he's perceptive and intelligent and didn't get swept up in Griffiths charm. the scene with griff choking guts, I agree that was when he realized what kind of man griff was, however, he still wanted to continue to support griff after the band of the hawk, so it obviously wasnt enough for him to hate griff.

Judeau was definitely one of my favorite Berserk characters for sure. I also found his reaction to Griffith's defeat interesting, and tbh I wonder how the story would progress if he had survived the Eclipse alongside Guts and Casca (or, as a darker alternative, survived instead of Casca).
I was reading the manga quickly when I got to that point, and I never noticed that Griffith was _actually attempting to choke_ Guts. Damn...
Oh yeah and others know this, obviously, but during the Eclipse Judeau has one of his eyes closed due to blood/pain and has his arm mangled by demons while protecting Casca. I believe this was a reference to how Guts is later on. If it isn't a stretch, it's a pretty witty and tragic reference by Miura (which Berserk is filled to the brim with).
Thanks for reading this comment ^^
(Also, Hirasawa's tracks are just 👍👌)

This was a pleasure to listen to. I also thought that out of all the important members of Grittith's band, Judeau was the one who was seeing though his bullshit the most, though kept his harbored resentments under check for his bandmates' sake. That scene where Guts and Judeau have a conversation for the first time after Casca was ordered to keep Guts warm, when Judeau threw one of his knights straight into one of his bandmates' bathing buckets, I've always thought it was a sign of Judeau's pent-up hate bubbling to the surface just for a moment, since he did it just as he was recounting Griffith's inconsidate instructions towards Casca. One might see it as him being an absentminded prankster at first, but I think it especially makes sense after the reader learns about Judeau's feelings towards Casca far too late.

Great video man! Your perspective on this is really cool to see, and you helped shed more light onto things I never thought about before. And I do agree with you, I'm sure that Judeau resented Griffith in some form or another, and though it was never explicitly stated, It's pretty likely he was the first one to see Griffith for who he really was. Keep up the great work!

I don't think Judeau hated Griffith, but I do agree that he understood Griffith during final chapters of The Golden Age arc. Personally, I don't think there was a lot of time for hatred to build up. I do love the poignancy of the scene where Judeau sees Griffith choking Guts and realizes the hatred and envy that Griffith feels towards him. I wonder if he would have actually gone on to tend to Griffith, or if Judeau would have mercy killed him after Guts and Casca were long gone.
