Always liked Corkus even though he was a prick, dude was never afraid to tell Guts exactly what he thought of his attitude. I think Guts appreciated it too. Gaston and the Raiders rode his nuts, the band respected him, Griffith and Casca loved him, and the other captains were all friends with him.
Corkus was the only person who until his death day would have walked up to the hundred man slayer and told him to his face that he's a selfish melodramatic baby.

Corkus might be a bit full of shit, but he has some balls. I wish we got a bit more depth to him, Corkus being the prick he is had a clear goal, Corkus compared to Guts could find some sadisfaction in the things they did. Guts could never be happy, even if everything goes right, a high position, finding love.

I don't think that Corkus was that weak. He just was compared to Guts (not really a fair comparison).
He was a leader of his own troop.
    He survived many battles.
He was a top officer of the best mercenary group the Band of the Hawke.
I think the 97 anime did him a little bit dirty and they didn't even include his line about not the main character of the story during the eclipse.

Corkus is a competent commander of men, but not necessarily a fantastic fighter, I'd guess he's stronger than Rickert but all the other captains would wipe the floor with him. He always leads from the back and prefers deception and guile over brute force.
His developed low cunning and trickery would have been very deadly on the battlefield. The art of war isn't killing your enemy the hardest, it's baiting your enemy into such an unfair situation they have no choice but to give up without a fight. Corkus could coordinate on the fly tactical ambushes, feigns, and flanks that would ruin a good general's day.

    • @yusukeelric
      @yusukeelric 2 года назад +35

I don't think Corkus was weak at all. He was just lacking in self confidence, and relied too much on his mouth instead of his hands to proove his worth. But he's one of the oldest hawks, you don't get to old in the hawks without wits or skill. And Casca believes in Corkus, she being the second in the chain, despite butting heads with him so often. I think the only one who didn't believe in Corkus... was Corkus himself. Yeah, Casca was stronger. But she was also the second in command for a reason.
Yeah, compared with guts everyone in the hawks lacks. but compared with Casca you can see they were close to each other. However Casca had courage, something Corkus lacked. Corkus was a spiritually defeated man.

We usually dislike the characters that are most like us because we see our faults in them. In a mercenary group we, regular people, would be like Corkus - pompous, jealous and scared. While on the other hand Guts is someone we strive to be, we want to be someone that can take charge, be brave and be composed in a gruesome battle.
So even though Corkus is written the way he is, he is just such an important character i order to see ourselves and our relationships with others.

I haven’t finished viewing this, but I would say that Corkus is probably the opposite to Judeau. Corkus thinks he is more than what he is, where as Judeau knows his own limitations. Corkus is relatable as most people think themselves more brave, handsome, intelligent, deserving, etc than what they actually are. For his part, Guts seems to like Corkus, as he is the man that keeps him grounded.

  • @yusukeelric
    @yusukeelric 2 года назад +42

Corkus is a coward, but , come one, who wouldn't be if facing what he did? while i didn't like his lack of self confidence thrown to such extent in the later segments. I did understand why corkus didn't trust Guts. Guts killed some of the hawks during his capture, and gave Griffith a good beating before he could restrain him. Guts at that point was like a stray dog. Of course Corkus wouldn't like Guts.
He slowly warms up to him....
Until Guts leaves. Corkus is livid with Guts leaving, specially considering what happened to Griffith because of that. But again, you can understand why he thinks like that. Thing is. Corkus may be many things, but he's never unreasonable. he's very grounded. Like many of the hawks he can't wait to leave the life of war and have a more peaceful life. But even after Griffith's fall, he's still there.
And the reason , is the HUGE mistake the Hawks made.
The Hawks biggest mistake, was making Griffith the heart of the Hawks. But that leasson was learned too late. As Rickert later says, The Hawks heart relies on each of their members, in this case. Guts, Casca and Rickert. Not in Griffith. But for Corkus, and most people who still were in the band after Griffith fall, that was the mindset, The only reason the hawks existed was to recover griffith. Not because he was part of the band. but because to the band... Griffith was the hawks.
And it turned out it was also for Griffith himself.
Like many others. Corkus put his fate in Griffith's hand. And like most of the hawks, he paid severely for it.

@@shaned.nelson6172 Now let's talk about something really juicy...how corkus, guts, skull, and zodd are all connected.
Edit, I believe corkus is guts lost brother, perhaps they shared the same father. Both corkus and guts share a similar story. They are the offspring of Zodd. Zodd found guts and did the "Donovan" thing. Because zodd knew guts was strong enough to face him someday...Zodd this strange immortal demon who follows the strongest warriors across the fields of battle. His essence is that of Nosferatu, the demon king. The black swordsman is the only true offspring of that entity, who's evil trafficking ring was held up by apostle Wild. They murdered the women that he slept with otherwise they'd give birth to his demon offspring. Only guts survives the process and becomes a mercenary fighting for the same kingdom that enslaved and murdered his mother. Where guts master then sells him to Donovan, who is secretly a demon in human form serving the agenda of the apostles, to create the ultimate sacrifice for Femto, the black swordsman.
Since kentaro has passed away. He has me to write another work of art, just like berserk. Inspired by berserk, for berserk fans. I'm carrying on where he couldn't. Zodd created the skull knight, skull knight fell in love with guts mother, thus they didn't just lynch whores, the lynched queens. And guts slaughtering 100 men was something Griffith planned from the start, only Griffith didn't foresee casca's fall, which would spark guts fame as a 100 man slayer. This is why Zodd is the one who warns guts about Griffith during that fated dungeon dance of kings kinsmen and also why Zodd throws an enormous blade into the fray at doldry keep. This enormous blade will return as a new work of art known simply as the Leverse. Zodd is the old grandpa of guts. Skull knight is gatsu's father, that's why the armor remembers who guts is and also seems to resemble the skull knight in outward appearance. It's all subliminal messages.

      GutsU

Please feel free to mention this thread and speak about the true story behind berserk. The untold truth of a secret satanic underworld that dabbles in the brutal handling of young people. A nameless boy named the black rabbit, and how the underground cult responsible for all of the rabbits suffering has just failed a heart operation on his oldest and deepest appreciated astral mentor, the great author and artist kentaro miura having passed away, his work will go on under new tuetilag but also his work has already become apart of FromSoftware to become something worthy of being told across time...dark souls. And the black rabbit will return, to write the wrongs of the past back into perspective. In a new work of video games inspired by kentarou miura and co authored by the black rabbits now long since deceased grand father. The black rabbit has been busy crafting a grand narrative for minds to eat, a game of fiction set in the bounds of reality, but so ultimate it's design had to be taught to a larger audience before it's concepts came into being, this dark souls is a huge ball of gas for me to work with as a game developer. But the black rabbit needs your support, he's currently homeless and couch surfing, and his mind is terriblly tattered. If you click on this profile, you may stumble into a true rabbit hole. Just remember to bring a rope, the black rabbit is one who people take fun in hunting, hunt me and die ruthlessly. Support me and taste what became of kentarou's blackswordsman. They all talk about the darkness in guts, but few truly know, as it is above so it is below. If you actually read this, I'm a video game developer trying to write another great game like dark souls, I'm arguing that I've been writing this story since before demon souls was released. If you want to join us, we're just getting started. It's too much for one soul to do alone, and I'm falling apart inside, I need help to do this. If you want to see the hatred end, this needs to happen, this will tie up my loose end...I have spoken.

I always thought Corkus never let Guts in openly because he still resented the fact his comrades died to him early on. I think deep down he did like guts to some extent but being open about his feelings would be in his mind betraying his dead comrades; who he knows only died because of his stupid decision to attack Guts, which he never admitted to being his own damn fault and not Guts'. I think he definitely is projecting alot of his own insecurities onto Guts, it's honestly impressive that despite all the bile Corkus frequents at Guts, they never fight, rather Guts takes into account the new perspective being offered.

I believe corkus is used by miura to show the reader guts' own doubts and internal monologue. Guts' lack of response shows that he reflects and takes into consideration what corkus has to say, because it is deep down what guts thinks as well.

I think theres an important point that wasnt mentioned. Corkus is the spiritual successor of Gambino. They both have the same dynamic towards guts and they both hate him. Both lost their dreams. Both tried to assasinate him. Both talk to guts the same way. The difference is Gambino was a brave warrior, however he got weak, pessimistic and bitter towards the end. Interesting thing is that Corkus was introduced right after the dearh of Gambino. Guts reacts the same way towards both of them, he remains quiet, doesnt argue and listens to them. I think deep down Guts doesnt react to Corkus because hes use to accepting the bullshit that came from Gambino towards him, maybe respects Corkus because hes an unconcious reminder of Gambino.

I always loved Corkus. I never really disliked any memeber of the Band of the Hawk.(OG) He was such a goofy ass dude, and definitely relatable as hell. Even Guts got his revenge on the Apostle that killed him. I like to think he hunted those specific apostles because they killed those guys.

Guts wasn't made be to anything.
He's NOT the chosen one, he made himself, and tbh, so did Corkus, as you said, he had a band of his own, no chump can do that.
Also Corkus isn't a complete coward, he's fearful, be hes still there fighting with everyone.

As an adult I've come to appreciate characters that just speak the harsh facts about stuff. Sometimes you need that reality check to make things a little more clear. In Corkus' case, while Guts is still trying to find himself and match up to Griffith, the guy is like "Look, we've fought our asses off to get here, don't throw it away for some childish reason." We know how important Guts' desire to be his own person is, but when Corkus lays it out like that, it's hard not to see where he's coming from. Lol

Although I never liked Corkus, I always found him interesting. His most memorable moment was his insecure reaction towards Guts disclosing that he wanted to forge his own destiny. Corkus clearly hated and envied him for having the audacity to dream bigger. I think that is very relatable, for example if you had dreams of how your life should be but you failed to realise them.

I feel like even then he lacks some credit, I mean even despite his cowardice he does most of the time still fight. He expresses great concern for his comrades and despite him laying into guts a couple times, he still doesnt express downright malice to him besides first impressions, mainly because two of his friends got killed by him. He likely does possess some valuable skills considering his position in the band of the hawk and gets a couple of kills even on screen. Most of the time these antagonistic cowardly characters are depicted as pathetic but Corkus defies that slightly, which is why i think he is a good character, his character flaws are just alot more obvious and shown while his good qualities arent seen easily. He does feel like a genuine guy in my opinion.

I think it’s less the fact Corkus held any value to Griffith and more so the fact Griffith said, “I chose to sacrifice the Band of the Hawk.”
    Still a very interesting video

    • @JBrodo
      @JBrodo Год назад +1

The scene of the Count and his daughter showed that to become a member of the God Hand, you must sacrifice in Slan's words: "Someone important to you, someone so close to you that it's almost like giving up a part of you." When the Count protests, Griffith (I refuse to call him Vemto 😝) says, "That's right. Any other person would be meaningless, Count." That is why when the Count tries to offer up Guts as a sacrifice, it is refused.
Now, I still agree with you to an extent! I don't think Corkus individually was that important to Griffith. But the Band of the Hawk as an entirety... The fact they were all marked as sacrifice and Griffith still became Vemto despite both Guts and Casca surviving the ritual means the Band of the Hawk met the criteria Slan defined.
I watched 97 first and am now reading the manga, and I was really surprised to read all this. Because otherwise, I pretty much would have agreed with you 100% and thought Griffith only saw the Band of the Hawk as depensible tools.

I think with Corkus it's very much the fact that he too wanted to be LIKE Griffith in a way, being a successfull leader of men, a respected and wealthy Mercenary Commander...
But... when faced with Griffith... well, Corkus wasnt nessecarily bad.... but he was just... average. And then he encounters someone who outshines him in every single aspect...
It's like if the best runner of a remote village of uncontacted people were to Witness Jousain Bolt for example.
So utterly outclassed that you cant help but to ask 'why keep trying?'
Especially since he aknowledges that the gap is too wide and that this person has a far greater drive and ability than himself and that by continuing on his own path the chances of facing up AGAINST Griffith would only increase and the outcome of that would be clear. So why not join up with the Hawks? Ultimately, he was a somewhat 'respected' sub-commander within the Band of the Hawk (if only for senority if nothing else) and that's what people tend to do. If they see their dreams go up in flames... they either rekindle the embers or save what they can from the Ashes.

I hated Corkus at first, not because he's a prick, but because he refused to acknowledge his responsibility for the lifes of comrades that Guts have killed during his first encounter. He bitched at Guts and even though it was him who killef them, it was Corkus that led them there. No one told him that he's at fault too, and it pissed me off.
But later I changed my mind on him, because of how relatable he was. I especially like his bragging when they return to the King after ending the war. Such an endearing guy. Also I've got to give him the credit of being one of the few Hawks who rightfully called Guts out. Sure, he's mostly a hater, but he has his points too.
Also him staying for Griffith was noble of him. Honestly, I felr so bad for him during the Eclipse. Sure, he was a coward, but who wouldn't? And not only he died afraid, but he also went to hell after death, which is the worst part of the Eclipse to me. At least he got to touch boob before he died...

I think he was a born pessimist just as you have said. I think at some points if you could see how he felt on the inside henwould be weeping bitterly.

did anyone notice that Gaston and Corkus are opposite to each other?
Corkus always disrespect and dislike Guts, while Gaston is always respecting and love Guts
Corkus character love to show off and want other civilians to serve him, while Gaston is humble and want to serve others (his dream of running a clothing shop after winning the war, he could go big like Corkus but didn't)
Corkus idolize Griffith, while Gaston idolize Guts (in the manga, Gaston have never shown his admiration to Griffith, he has no direct dialogue with Griffith, it was only assumed by readers).
But despite they are polar opposite in their characteristic, their look are very similar, they both have black hair, and a skinny face.
I think Miura made a small contradiction of Gaston and Corkus.
