Step By Step TDI Swap - Part 4: Engine, Transmission Mounts, and Driveshafts

  • On this installment of the TDI XJ engine swap we bring the BEEF. Shafts so sturdy Crossfit athletes are pressing them instead of plates, a heavy duty transmission mount and custom crossmember that will make your stock stuff wilt, and of course welding up the TD Conversions engine mounts (they've got plenty of certified lean beef too). We'll talk about where to start with welding all that up and the fabrication process, measuring for those driveshafts, and checking off another big step in the project.

    Another great video thank you! Sorting out a crossmember on the bench is quite a challenge. I took a different approach starting with hanging the engine/trans in the jeep, using a post jack to determine my desired manifold angle (ok, to be honest, making sure my rad/fan angle was kosher) and that my pinion angles weren't going to be impossible. Then, I measured and did some dirty CAD ( Sooty Cardboard Aided Design) in place to develop the new crossmember, with centrering bolts ( allthread with ends turned into spikes) to define critical mounting points that were non-negotiable. I like your use of square stock, I had a pile of DOM tube kicking around which looked great in the end but was a pita to work with. Because I wasn't sold on my final engine/trans disposition, I also pre-fabbed a number of 1/16" shim plates for the GM rubber trans mount I chose to use (for spousal approval reasons) Great fun as always to watch your thought processes. Good to see you support an awesome company like Adams, their customer support is second to none!

    For my 305 4l60e swap I used 4ft of 2x6 3/16 steel tubing ($55). Cut a piece off the end where the crossmemeber looked centered on both sides and welded that extra piece on top for the transmission mount (trans pan wouldnt clear crossmemeber). Also i tapped out the 3rd hole on both sides. Reamers made drilling holes very precise and easy

    I really like your series.
    I want a reasonable trail capable 4x4.
    I want to tow a small travel trailer so I don’t want a lot of lift/decreased stability.
    Could I clock the TDI, use the Passat AC bracket and clear the differential/axle with minimal lift?

    Ironman 4x4 Fab may take 6 weeks for you to get your parts. Also, their directions might not be right. So I found when I ordered some steering parts.

    • @DRTJon
      @DRTJon 5 лет назад

      I know they've had trouble keeping steering kits in stock in the past. I also know I've dealt with these kind of delays (or much worse) many times over on this build, and it is frustrating. I found Ironman 4x4 Fab to be very responsive. I won't name names but I can't say the same for some others I wish I had not spent my dollars with. To be fair most of these guys are small shops focusing on quality and trying to keep up with demand, so customer service can be a real challenge in the busy times.

    Do you project an increase in TDI prices because of all the recent hype over these swaps into Jeeps?

    • @DRTJon
      @DRTJon 5 лет назад +1

      Myles Gregory nation wide I don’t think it’s that big of a thing yet or growing that rapidly. But logically I can’t say no: they’re not making any more of them so supply is decreasing and demand,
      Regardless of how slow or fast, is increasing. My personal opinion is it will be a long time before the prices on them would anywhere close to double, and the engine cost is already not the most expensive portion of the swap.

      @@MattyGgardneR hahahahaha yes! This is NOT polyurethane, it's a much softer rubber, similar to a control arm bushing. It took about 500 miles before it was broken in. Vibrations felt were not bad but noise transfer has gone way down. The bolt has a nylon lock nut so it does not need to be torqued down heavily, just definitely don't want it to be sloppy

      first full tank was 31.5 MPG. I did a partial fill up after that, then was on my next full tank on a longer trip and the turbo bearings started to go out, so it's down for turbo replacement now. I have more miles on that tank with more showing on the gauge than when I filled up when calculating the 31.5 MPG so I expect it will be somewhere between 32 and 36 MPG regularly
