intro is dope and so is john, solid addition to bleepin! stoked for the following vids for the build.
Yup as soon as he came out in a suit.i was positive that was a dope baggie on the dash!
I have an 86 MJ with a very tired 2.5L. It was my daily driver for three years, but the engine is starting to have major issues. I am strongly considering a TDI swap. Thank you for all the info!
I can already tell Jon will do quality work with this build. It's nice to see someone taking pride in doing it right and building a nice vehicle. I still like the offroad beater type rigs, but there's something about a clean build that is simply refreshing.
Im so excited to see this new project! I have read a few things about the tdi swaps and I want to do it my self so bad! Im sure this series will help (not just me but a great number of other people!)
Awesome guy, Volkswagens and Jeeps have the best communities around them
FINALLY!!!! Been waiting for this series so I can pull the trigger. 🤘🏻
@8:00 LOL James made a hilarious face after his question. Good one kid!
Dropping weight off the D30 and extending range are my reasons for pursuing this swap myself (ALH into an MJ). Oh and also the cool turbodiesel sounds!
Alan Townsend whoosh! Choo-choo! 🚂
Did you follow through with this?
Getting there! Project turned into a full blown restoration 🙄
@@alantownsend5468 hows it going now? Looking to do the same swap in my 89 mj
Hey Matt,. Just want to say I enjoy the channel tremendously. I've learned alot from your videos and even laughed a ton as well. I love the addition of Jeremy and Jon to the team. The editing in the 1.9 TDI swap video is frickin stellar! Keep up the great work!!!
Love it. This is one of the best videos seen in a while. Knowledge with a keen sense of humor. Doesn't get any better. Pay attention to me.
I can't wait for this series to unfold! I want to do a TDI swap in my 2000 TJ soooo bad but dont want to spend 20k for a company to do it.
The new intro is great, but the bowtie is better
I've got a 95 Wrangler with a 2006 1.9 TDI and a stage 1 tune, bone stock: more power and gets 30+mpg. cotybuilt can almost use them to power the jku but needed the 2.0 for all the weight. They're pushing around 240hp.
finally a "daily like" build this is gonna be awesome!
This is the project I've been waiting for. Can't wait!
More energy and excitement in that opening than in all yalls videos put together.
Interesting, this could become popular in Europe or other regions where small diesel engines are very common.
Jeep sold the XJ in Europe with a diesel option and yes, it was popular
Gary Button yeah but the VM 2,5 was a horrible little diesel very unreliable and only 110 horsepower or so. At least the VAG tdis are reliable and have more power
Europe gets all the diesel things. That’s why we have to build them ourselves here!
Diesel vehicles are discouraged (higher road tax, etc) here in the Netherlands but you can get the engines cheap. It's likely the diesel engine will be phased out from cities and probably in general in the future. Interesting build though for the US. BTW, my xj has a petrol (not diesel) engine...
@@Chom112 Perhaps you should tell this owner about that: ruclips.net/video/IotlNtwmSFc/видео.html
just started building my Toyota LJ70 , 1.9tdi from the 1999 Golf 3 . Mechanical pump, sent it in hungary for tuning ( modding the inside of the pump, modding the injectors aswell .they said i will get 280hp
Everything for mounting the engine , even the adaptive plate for my gearbox will be made for me by someone i know.
Im so hyped for when its done z
I like the intro and I think you’re very entertaining Jon. Some humor like Matt, just a little different brand of humor. I look forward to watching this build.
Ryan Vincent thank you Ryan!
Diesel, my drug of choice!
SMOKE SOME!
I have a 2003 Jetta tdi (ALH)with a bigger (slightly) vnt-17 turbo and the stage 4 Malone tune makes about 155hp and 270ish tq bigger nozzles and a few other things. Can’t wait to see it i a Jeep. I also have a 1997 jeep xj with a 5.5 in lift would be cool to see how it drives.
Ps I get about 50 mpg lol
How do you get so much? All the info ive seen they're saying 28-32 which is obviously very attractive still. I had planned on doing basically what you did.
Great video, here in the european market most of our Jeep are diesel powered, KJs and JKs got a 2.8 CRD engine made by VM motori, very torquey engines, good amount of power and reliability too.
You may consider them for a diesel swap, they are ready to match Jeep transmission with no adapters then you can find them to the junkyard for cheap with all the wiring harness and its own ECM.
As a Jeep anthusiast , I'll be happy to help you buy and ship you engine and parts for you, just let me know.
Keep doing what you're doing guys, your videos are great.
In European markets that may be a great option. Here in the US we only got them in the KJ with an automatic transmission and production numbers were quite limited. I have never seen one in a salvage yard. Some years back I came across an early body style XJ with the 2.5 VM Motori but the price (had front end damage and they wanted $2500) and parts cost/availability scared me away.
This has been my dream project for some time now. Can not wait to follow this build through to completion.
I have a 2.5 TD VM engine in my 2000 XJ , big torque, Always after 300 000 KM. It was the stock diesel engine for Jeep and Chrysler in Europe. It's a fantastic engine with a low consuption, 10 l /100 KM.
This is the greatest thing ever! I'm really excited to see the rest of the videos. Thank you guys so much!
Super excited for this build. New intro is awesome. Looking forward to the rest of this build and John's videos. Would love to add a tdi jeep to my fleet. Just one of many great ideas in my head.
That badass D35 rear is all you need. 2.07 gears and open diff you are ready for the Rubicon! :)
Sorry bud, that is a Chrysler 8.25 rear end.
i normally find these multi-part engine swap vids hard to tune in to but i can't wait for the rest of this series!
So stoked for this! I'm trying to figure out what engine I want in my comanche build. TDI at the top of my list
PNW Born and Raised got a 1990 MJ doing this to started body work An prep using a 04 BEW code TDI motor for mine
PNW Born and Raised ..Vortec 350 and turbo 400 is the route I went with my Manche. More power and cheaper overall
Introd was outstanding can't wait to see the next video
Kudos for the new intro. 10/10. Great new Member. Great new Build.
DUDE!! That intro! Legit.
AWYEAH! Been thinking about this project since my 4.O dropped the oil pressure quite significantly!
This is cool, I like the Mercedes swap better but this is awesome to! Looking forward to the next videos.
onlychevys Williams vw is 1/2 the weight, gets better mpg, and makes the same power
@@trevordavis4728 and typically cost way less
Ohhhhhh. ..outside the box thinking...loving it...
This is awesome! John is a great addition to the team!
Thanks ballsaglory, super honored to be a part of the crew!
Love the intro, glad to see some more XJ builds! Dont think i didnt notice that sexy grand wagoneer hangin out on the side of the frame!
kurikuri4sherm nice! Yes that’s another one of my builds to be revealed at a later time 😎
Very excited for this series and build! I have a long history with VWs. I never did own a TDi powered VW, but this build series could end that soon enough.
Awesome engine choice. Let's see how it works out.
Ok haven't even started the actual video totally dig the intro I would have to say best one yet
snag em n tag em yep Matt killed it with that!
thank you for this!
Been following him on ig for a while now, sick wagoneer project and recently this xj, all in a tiny garage, great stuff.
400 square feet buddy! Everything is in reach...literally :-)
Excited to follow this swap! 👍
Pretty pumped for this one! Been researching this swap for a while!
Stay tuned my friend and we'll do our best to lay it all out for you :-)
Awesome. I'm working on a similar build with my 88 yj. I got the same adapter as you.
You could kept the auto and used radesigns shifters. Would have to be a manual shift auto though.
MasterMoparMan great info!
I’m liking this new fellow
I cannot wait to see the work that went into this swap!
that jeep is very clean, i have a yellow xj like that but its more of a trail beater. might swap a 12valve
You could make a block off plate for the vacuum pump and run an electric vacuum pump. Many Chevy vehicles come factory with a electric vacuum pump so you can get one cheap at a junk valve
the professor is awesome the editing is top notch. you need suede elbow patches.
James Hall shoulda good willed it. If the prof needs to be called upon again I’ll request a more specific wardrobe.
I think this is a fantastic idea. In Europe we have lots of small diesels in big vans. I've driven a 2.0 van with an all up weight of over 3 tones. Still had no problem at all on steep hills. The only time you will miss the 4.0 is when overtaking with oncoming traffic. I suspect it could use half the fuel and may have better touque low down.
The TDI has so much tuning potential though! The Jetta was quite snappy and I don't expect the XJ will be much of a slouch in comparison. I'm starting out stage 3 tuned, larger injectors, larger intercooler and 2.5" free flowing exhaust but I definitely plan to upgrade turbo and there's plenty of room for a compound setup in here if needed. Injection pump on mine is the 11mm from it being an automatic so I won't be running out of fuel unless I get to crazy high numbers. Best yet there's tons of strong clutch options for the AX15 so holding 200+ HP won't be a concern. At that point I'll be looking at a new rear for sure though!
That new intro is 🔥🔥
I am currently halfway through swapping a VW 1.8t gas engine using this same conversion kit. Been lots of fun so far. Super excited to watch how this goes
How did it go?
Not something I think I will ever do but will be fun to watch
Ya that engine he put in is trash. I enjoyed the video though
Why is the engine trash? Bashing something without sharing any other information is unhelpful :-/
@@DRTJon I wasnt bashing. Still enjoyed the video and appreciated the skill it took to do the swap. But yes they are very bad engines. I have had numerous in the family and they all came home on flat beds once a week and I'm talking when they were new. I mean its Volkswagen. At what point were they good?
@@1598hi Are you sure it was the 1.9 ALH? I'm connected with thousands of people running this engine in all kinds of applications and literally no one is complaining of them being garbage. I've put 30k trouble free miles on this exact engine and I have literally never seen a MK4 TDI broken down on the side of the road. Given proper maintenance these engines are know to hit 350k miles with no overhaul.
Love that intro man!
The passat tdi engine would of been great i had one of them aswell if i knew id of put that in my xj, my uncle had a passat aswell n his had 160bhp standard mine was 140 standard
The Passat engines are great, not as easy to adapt all the accessories and such but definitely more base power available. In the next few years I'd love to take a CR 2.0 TDI and put it in a JKU as a family vehicle for us
This guy is rad.
Great job nice build ! What about R2.8 crate Cummins? Little more money but its plug and play.
Eli Sancere what makes it plug and play? It’s a LOT more money! Still need an adapter to put an AX15 behind that too ya know
0@@DRTJon
I have a 2005 4runner and I want to do the same thing. Keep up the work.
If you could get a hold of a toyota diesel itd likely bolt right up..
This build sounds so cool I’m subscribing
Gabe Kiakojori welcome aboard!
Following this build. Wanting to do this myself
I love the VW TDI. I had a 2006 Jetta with the 2.0 and it was a super little car. VW bought it back from me because of the emissions debacle and I upgraded to a BMW 3.0 twin turbo diesel, also a great car. I could envision a VW TDI in just about any vehicle, they are that good.
Well done video. Looking forward to this series.
this is a build I cannot wait to see
theres no patches in his elbows this professor is bogus lol awesome build
@Carolus Magnus lmao
My favorite class by far! Well done professor 👍
Had a mercedes om617 in a jeep, was perfect for crawling but sucked as a daily. For the cost of a tdi swap I decided to go with a built 4bt, so thats where im headed :D. I do look forward to seeing your swap!
What's the 4BT in? I am also building a Grand Wagoneer with a 4BD1T Isuzu 3.9L, 1 tons and 37s but that project hit the back burner when I got the urge to do this TDI XJ. I always felt the 4BT and similar were a little heavy for the un XJ personally but I've seen plenty of builds with them lately and they're definitely awesome.
This is all very interesting and I have contemplated a diesel change in my '01 TJ with 4.0 that now has the dreaded 4.0 deep ticking. But my heart yearns for nothing else but a Detroit Diesel 2-stroke. They are out there and I have heard them on you tube screaming thru mud bogs and I want one. American iron all the way thru....Detroit Diesel for me.
It would be awesome to have an old heavy duty truck with a Detroit for tooling around, but they are insanely heavy and very low power for their size and weight. I'd put one in something borderline rat rod for sure, but as a daily I can't imagine you could make something anywhere near practical.
I’m not sure where in Pa I saw it, but I’ve seen the burgundy XJ with Rubicon wheels.
I sold it to a guy in Lancaster county, but he since sold it to someone else. I regret selling it but I got good $ for it
Jon BleepinJeep I use to drive for FedEx, so I want to say I saw it somewhere in Huntingdon county.
This is gonna be awesome
1) new intro is sick af 2) this is amazing and cant wait to see it 3) need to figure out the finer details for a tdi to WJ for myself (yeah big daddy gonna roll coal!) :P
That will be sick! WJ might be a good candidate for one of the newer TDIs too, but any way you go, TD Conversions has you covered with the adapter it's a beautiful piece. Personally I am a manual guy all the way so an AX15 or NSG370 would be my only choices, but I'd understand wanting to keep the Grand living up to it's name so AW4 would probably be a good choice for that build as well.
cant wait to see part 2 !!!
Thank you professor looking forward to the second class
I can't wait for the next episode! I want a diesel MJ so bad!
Try a white board in place of cardboard next time. Very informative. Thanks.
And it still runs. That is why I love the 4.0. You just can't kill it.
elsydeon666 I killed it tho. Revved it to 2500 RPM with that knock and made it a window block
Love the lil kiddo part hahaha. Totally Into makin my xj roll some coal! Can’t wait to see how ya did it!🧐
I am looking forward to this series
Sweet, I’ve been trying to come up with a way to do this to my s10 haha
Any mods done to the oil pan? Now that the engine in mounted front to back instead of side to side is there any issue with oil starvation during acceleration
Nick no mods to the oil pan. Though you need a lift to clear it. I’ll talk a lot more about this in future episodes. I decided to run a steel pan and I’ll also talk about that. The oil pickup tube actually is S shaped and curves towards the back of the engine. I will consider building a deeper sump and longer pickup but for now the stock setup doesn’t scare me at all.
1.9 engine was available in passat/a4 etc mounted north to south, so could use that setup
Nah, the VW doesn't starve going around corners, I don't think the Jeep will have any starvation issues.... until it rolls....
Did you ever figure out how to get the AC system installed and plumbed in?
I'm gonna do this to my TJ.
@Carolus Magnus Why not?
Nice to meet you John. I'll be watching you for sure as this is looking rather sweet. Nate actually brought that tdi thought up with his TJ and since then I've been contemplating how to do mine, even tho I already have a diesel in my xj...but not the good VW TDI but the "weird" VM 2.5l tdi. Anyway, just before christmas I got my hands on a bmw m57d30tue2 with factory modified ecu and some 220hp for a good buck so I thought why not give that a try. Fuel eco is still very good, sitting at about 23mpg. So far I'm in the stage of testing it and getting some bits and pieces together but hoping to start dropping it in during summer. I think it might be quite interesting if I do it right. Anyways, cheers to you!
Martin Vojta sounds awesome, build it!!
Now that’s a sweet intro
Why do you guys thinkn of the 2.8 Cummins for a swap? When I visited the Philippines they had them in Toyota Hiace vans with a 6 spd. It be cool to see one put onto a jeep.
Any idea when more videos are to follow?
look into the sami that ethan built on that power block show it had a biodiesel converter he wheeled it all day on 2 gal of diesel and 1 gal of bio wheeling hard fo a 7 or 8 hr day
This is awesome professor!
Holy hell that TD adapter package is outrageously expensive for what you get. I understand how supply and demand works and that price should not even be feasible to anyone. Plus who would spend $5k total to put a TDI in when you can get a 4.0 with warranty for half that. Dude said a 4.0 is a Meh engine....meh my ass, the 4.0 is known as one of, if not the best, jeep engine ever made and possibly top 25 engines of all time. They are hard to kill and make plenty of power for XJs and you can easily get another 50-100hp with just bolt ons and a cam or have a Mustang killer if you stroke it. The 4.0 is regularly utilized in Baja style desert racing, and without a doubt the only engine being used in the JEEPSPEED racing series
Pretty soon Mat is gonna just gonna sit back and wheel, while he plays Ted Turner of jeepin videos lol. I love it more content yes please
Nahh, I'm still here making videos... just nobody is watching them 🤣
I'm digging this. Come on with it ...
Nice Wagoneer.
Not to get ahead of the build, but what diff gear ratios should be considered for that TDI's powerband?
Jon should be set up to answer these questions soon!
As with any build, the answer to this question relies on 3 variables: transmission choice, tire size, and powerband of the engine/where in the RPM range is it most efficient. The ALH is most efficient around 2200-2600 RPM. In my Jetta with the automatic I was turning around 2500 RPM at 70. I’d like that number to be a little lower in the XJ, but not a lot, so that it isn’t lugging hard to keep such an anti-aerodynamic vehicle cutting through the wind. The 45 lb flywheel should help a little here as well. Keep in mind that for a direct injection engine these are still quite happy to whizz along at 3000+ RPM all day, but that’s not where they’ll be the most efficient. Of course until put into practice, much of this is theory, but that’s the gist of it 😎
Can you please do a video on camming a 4.0!!
Why not use the Coyt kit? Beside the money aspect? Feel it would be in the same ball park price.
RedBeard109 I’ve answered this question before. Very expensive kit and their customer service was non existent when I tried to get a hold of them during my planning stages. Also it is only compatible with newer engines generations than mine
Definitely watching this
Im doin the coty tdi swap. Cant wait.
I have a 2 door 98 with a factory 2,5 L - 115 HP engine, 5 speed stick shift, AC.
I love the car for everyday driving. Pulls my horse trailer with two heavy mares through sand, the dirt and up the mountains and my Seadoo to the beach. Even rescued a Range Rover out of the mud. Runs an easy 160 km on the highway. Now I have 200.000 km. No mayor issues and still going strong.
warrior90 wow that’s awesome!
Loving this project
