Loved the demo of the old skool points ignition. The condenser is connected across the points and helps extend their lifetime by helping them extinguish the current when the points open (all those electrons charging along divert into the condenser, until it's full, and by then the points spark will have extinguished). You will note on the old points a hole on one side and a bump on the other. Usually you can use two screwdrivers, one on the tightening screw and another large on will fit in a notch somewhere to help move the points baseplate to get the adjustment. Ok three hands for that, perhaps Cat can help. Now the voltage you get across a coil is proportional to the rate of change of current. So as the points are a switch you get a very rapid change of current and hence a big voltage. The coil is a transformer with the points switching the primary winding current. The secondary via the dizzy rotor connects to your plugs so you will get lots of volts there dependent also on the ratio of primary to secondary number of turns in the coil. Faults on the HT (spark plug side) of the coil can be impossible to spot e.g. hairline crack inside the dizzy cap can leak the HT to earth and not via the plug leads so if in doubt or having problems try a new cap. I note the new rotor arm. Now dumb question: I really can't remember after 40 years - what exactly is the function of that foam cap under the rotor. P.S. stick some yellow tape on that socket ratchet handle on the crank pulley and get in the habit of removing it from the engine regularly 😊. Really looking forward to the start, and love that new carb. Happy days 😊
Thats how i used to do my points on my old escorts Marcus. Love messing with my old motors, need a laptop now and thats a bit outta my league! Keep up the good work 👍
Beautiful girlfriend Cat is chilled as ever.🤣👍🏻
She loves the trips to Mexico mate! 👍
it be great to see you do an engine build !!
Not sure what the market is like for MK1/MK2 Escorts in regards to panels, but I came across a video for a Taiwanese company Muscle Car GT that makes panels for the MK1/MK2 Escorts. I wish they did panels for MK3 or TD Cortinas as know here in Australia. That would be a help for my current project as the shipping would be a fair bit cheaper coming from Taiwan to Australia compared to the UK to Australia..
The two geezers that sent you the carb and pump... Diamonds.
Awesome community you've got. F the haters.
I'm so lucky to have so much help from my followers and companies. I really wouldn't be able to do what I do without them. 👍
Those gifts from subs were amazing!!! That carb looks superb!
Im super grateful that so many followers and companies help me out with bits. 👍
Looks killer mate as usual 🎉
Thanks mate! 👍
How about a 32 ford hot rod design.
The condenser on points reduces the wear on the contacts through arcing on the points. I thought it was but had to do a search to be sure. Points always gives me flashback to when someone had overtightened a screw on some breaking the backing plate. Memories.
Thanks for the info. Someone at the show yesterday was struggling to get the car started at the end. Turned out to be a loose screw on his points. ☹️
As a tinkerer myself i have a 40 year honda cb125. Im always getting it wrong and messing it up. Watching your vids its therapy for me. Helps me forget and there's akwayz a solution to everything. Thanks markus
Glad the videos help mate. There’s usually more than one solution for any problem. 👍
Don't forget to put some drops of oil on the sponge under rotor arm so it oils plastic heal on points to stop it wearing, also suck on pipe to vacuum advance to see if it's advancing points. Regards Mick.
Thanks for the advice mate! 👍
Hi,if you want to get points spot on,use a Dwell meter, the dwell angle will be in manaul.
Thanks for the advice mate! 👍
😂 If you want to get points spot on then buy an efi kit.. You can throw all the knowledge and time you want at an obsolete technology and all you'll do is come to the same conclusion as those who made it obsolete in the first place.
I’ve run electronic ignition on a cross flow before. When the module eventually fails you are stranded. With points if they fail they usually just need a clean and you’re back on the road. 👍
Turbo it 😊
Bought a couple of mugs....all the best with the new venture.
Thanks for your order mate! 👍
Ordered xr2 and Cossie t shirts great looking designs 👍
Thanks for your order mate! 👍
Fantastic t-shirt designs by the designs and look forward to seeing more. Well done 👏 nice to see you busy on ur builds
Trying to stay super busy at the moment and Im grateful people are enjoying the videos. 👍
As always a great catch up on your RUclips channel Marcus, Keep um coming fella 😊😊😊
Thanks for watching mate! 👍
Love watching the videos, keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching mate! 👍
I've missed a few of your videos, but wow you've made massive progress 👏
Trying to stay as busy as I can mate. 👍
Those were some pretty awesome gifts. Some nice bling for the lump.
With the new website, make sure to imbed a bunch of meta data so it’ll come up in searches
Thanks for the advice mate! 👍. I’m gonna sit down one evening this week and do the SEO etc. I was going to do it before launch but decided to just get it launched first. 👍
@@marcushayesford no time like the present
Marcus, put classic vw beatles /camper vans, classic 60s mini cooper s, .2.7RS porsche 911 and retro porsche 930 Turbo images on your products that will get you more global appeal
Thanks for the suggestions mate! 👍
Or just slap a universal sticker on it? Idk..
F*ck the haters mate. Social media seems to breed these know it all w4nkers! I have been in the motor trade for over 40 years and been working on OSF's in all of that time and I enjoy your content! I enjoy you f*uckups and your bellend'ing about, its what makes the content entertaining & worth watching.
I love it when people like you that actually know what you are doing tell me you watch my videos. Thanks for tuning in. 👍
Take no notice of the haters Marcus you keep doing what you enjoy doing m8
In todays world you can't be successful at anything without picking up a few haters along the way. 👍
Mate another cracking video 👍 wish I could've come to the show but I'm on holiday keep it up buddy
Some classic Mk1 golf Gti and cabriolet Gti t shirts would be a good seller i reckon, along with mk2 golfs
There’s loads of classic VW original posters you could base some of the designs off of
The Richard Lloyd Akai golf from the early 80’s touring cars and Alan Minshaws silver championship winning car would be good 👍🏻
Thanks for the suggestions mate! 👍
Hi Marcus another great vid, can’t wait til the next update. I see you mates escort mk1 TVR was sold & on living life fasts channel. Hope you go & see his next project when you possibly pick-up some more carbon. All the best Marcus to you both.
I’m defo due another visit to see Garry’s latest project! Here’s the vid when I first saw it just in case you missed it ruclips.net/video/Rxukp9yEtqs/видео.htmlsi=M82r3ny-cfeAjCwq 👍
re the petrol heads style - the American pickup drivers love a T shirt with a pickup on it , JUST ORDERED THE ROYAL BLUE COSSIE HOODIE 👌
Thanks for the suggestion mate! 👍 And thanks for your order! 👍
Nice website Marcus just ordered the lotus cortina T shirt 👌👌
Thanks for your order mate! 👍 Great choice. The Lotus Cortina design looks awesome on the military green shirts. 👍
@@marcushayesford absolutely!! 💯👌👌 look forward to seeing all the new designs in time, I’ve signed up to the mailing list
Great progress again mate 👍 good luck with your new venture! I've ordered a mug! What about some rally car designs... Rothmans Mk2, RS200, Focus WRC etc 🤔
Thanks for your order. Yes the rally liveries would look awesome on shirts. 👍
Hope your new venture goes well, one suggestion I would make is the classic Mini. Go to a Mini show and see how well attended they are by all ages. They have a massive following. I am sure classic Mini, and possibly even the new BMW Mini, stuff would do well. Just a thought. 👍
Thanks for the recommendation mate! 👍
Looking good mate ! Well done and I’ve subscribed to the new shop👍 bit of advice though… put a small bit of grease around the cams on the dissy shaft and drip some oil in the centre so that felt piece you see gets wet 👍that’s what is for mate amd should not be dry. Few drops of 10 40 will do .. known as the distributor wick and keeps dirt out 👍 cheers Ross
Thanks for your advice mate! 👍
If you can get an old dwell meter from a junk in the trunk sale ( boot sale) to you , more accurate than feeler gouge for points, don't forget to check ignition timing every time you reset points. Good luck with new business
Don’t forget to smear some grease on the cam in the disi to cut down wear on the points ‘heel’, which will reduce the points gap and so retard the ignition timing. The condenser is primarily there to reduce arcing across the points gap. The best solution is to fit an electronic ignition unit into the distributor.
Mate another excellent video thank you 😊 for a worn bottom end for a cheap fix try some marvel mystery oil I've tried it and it works well it frees the rings up poor it into the fuel to and you can take the plugs out and pour it into the cylinders that is messy though as you will need to crank it over with the plugs out after letting it sit over night try it pal 👍 looking forward to the next video take care 🙂 gotta love the haters pal were would they be without us 😀
I’ve never heard of that stuff. I’ll look into it. Thanks for the recommendation. 👍
Easy fix for the throttle linkage - fit twin carbs
I like the way your mind works! 😃
Awwwwwwwwwwww mint vid
The haters if they know so much why they not advertising you or explaining what they think is the correct way 🤬 that’s what a decent person would do.the haters are full of crape you are doing a great job well done love your achievements . Can’t stop laughing when you have your girlfriend in car and you giving it foot to the floor. She getting thrown around 😂🤣👍👏🤙🫡💪🍀☘️👋🏻😇🫣
People that are actually happy within themselves NEVER hate on people. They will offer advice and constructive criticism instead. The haters only hate because deep down they hate themselves. Sad but true. . . . . . . . . Cat loves the exciting passenger rides! 😃
Engine looks the part now
Defo coming along mate. 👍
Please do some classic vauxhall merch cavs gte novas etc 😁😁🙏🏻
Hi Marcus.71 XY GT.
🤔
Has escorts never came with Orings in the bearing from factory why worry just use sealer in the grove the Oring bearings a Capri bearing. They only leak when the bearings fitted the wrong way the seal that's fitted backwards so can't see any writing on the seal just can see the spring goes in to diff side
I believe originally there were no o-rings. Some of the aftermarket bearings are not perfectly sized so the o-rings are there to cure the issue. 👍
@@marcushayesfordlol
When the points open the condenser builds a charge and converts 12v ~800A~ to high voltage low amps, then the points close and the condenser dumps the entire charge to the distributer arm which sends it down the High Tension lead to the Spark Plug and the rest is the OTTO cycle. The points are just a circuit breaker. Nothing more. Nothing less. The condenser is doing all the work. If you're goi g to rebuild the 170 you should consider a head spacer, turbo, bigger injectors and some ARP or better head bolts. You have the ecu. Turn the mofo up to 11. Aim for 400hp then consider changing the rods to aluminium, turn it up to 800.
I believe the spark occurs when the points open??? . . . . . Anything more than 200 hp would be a wasted with 'Esther's current suspension setup, altho Id love to experience 800 hp! 😃
If u put any 100e ford stuff on your new website I’ll be interested in buying whatever it is
Noted mate. 👍 A 100E shirt would look awesome.
What brake fluid do you use ?
Dot 5 silicone mate. Simply because it doesn’t eat paint if the reservoirs ever leak. 👍
Marcus do a T-shirt design for a s1 RS turbo and get your self on the s1 forum you’ll definitely make a good sale on there
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll put Series 1 RS turbo on the list. 👍
local engineering supplies place will have o-rings, just take a sample, support local business
I was able to work out the size and order them on eBay. Did t realise at the time they were coming from China tho. 😀
Marcus, the rear wheel bearings with the O ring round the outside are aftermarket junk I am afraid to say! Get a set of OEM SKF bearings, they are not cheap but fit and forget. MST stock them or any good bearing wholesaler, the rubber seal is on the back so you can also use a bit of bearing fit to seal them in the housing and stop them moving around...
Mate slowdown please 🙏 I need to catch up 😅😅😅😅
Great content as usual sir !
You can talk!! 😀😀😀
Your 100E will be on the road before I get a chance to visit again the rate you are going!! 😀
🤣🤣🤣🤣
It would be good if you could get your man who did the head rebuild to rebuild your bottom end, you just know he would do a top job and would be great content, also at a glance the clothing range looks pukka!, im just not into the coat hanger logo on the front imo would be better if it was on the back at the top, 👍
Thanks for you input regarding the logo. Its defo something I have thought about. 👍
hayyy i seen a mk 1 cortina on thw website
Time to ditch the old zetec and go for a more modern duratec st150 lump? Prices look fair atm
Edit: prices aren't that crazy for the st170s on ebay if you can pick them up yourself. Was expecting way more than 350-400. Nothing is £200 anymore 😅
Why buy an st150 when an st170 is more power?
@starfox_wr-45e93 Maybe one day, but would probably be cheaper to build a crazy Zetec than swap the whole setup for a Duratec. . . . . . .
@R6AAO Stock yes, but the ST150 is a Duratec engine and is way more capable. 👍
I'd wanna research it a bit more before pulling the trigger on an 170 lump. From the little bit I done this morning via the locost guys, seems like a (2005 on) MX5 box bolts up, and you'd need the: Flywheel, Starter motor, Pressure plate, Friction plate all from the MX5, which keeps it simple.
Just leaves a suitable RWD Sump, engine mounts, exhaust manifold?
Seems like decent performance manifold and tune alone might put you back on par with the 170's power 🤔
I think it'd would be worth the effort just to separate Ester from the crowd.
I reckon she'd be well up for upsetting the anoraks just that little bit more 😁😂
No Mexican driving with leaky axle Marcus
Oops! 😜
