Gummy sharks!! :-D Fishing on the tide down, tide up waters and targeting a type of fish is awesome to a person fishing all their life in fresh water lakes. You made this so educational.
@@TheFishLockerHi John, I just wanted to say that we get gummy sharks here as well in Sth. Aust and they are nice eating but only if you dispatch them, fillet and then skin them fast. Like all sharks they urinate through their skin so if you put them whole on ice and keep them for a few hours the meat will have a strong ammonia taste. One other thing, ours do have teeth but they are small and rounded so only used as crushers, much like a stingray and they do have a nice hard bite if they grab you. No lasting damage though.
Great session mate, I'm so envious, hopefully one day I will have one like it to. Getting better all the time though, thanks to you and all your advice. Tight lines mate.

Only just seen this. What an exceptional video!!! Engaging, quality of image, sound, editing, scenery, information. Outstanding and brilliant!!! Thank you!
That was a fantastic session John, when the hounds are feeding theres nothing like it. They fight like crazy from the second you hook them right until they go back usually with a tail splash right to the face. I bet your arms were aching after that. 😆 Thanks for the vid and tight lines mate 🎣
When circle hooks were all the rage ~20 years ago I tried them and lost a few good fish so went back to J hooks. A year or so ago I bought some pre-made rigs not knowing they were circle hooks, gave them a go and now I love them. What you say is 100% correct in that they grab the corner of the mouth and rarely (if ever) gut hook. They key is not to whack the fish too hard when they bite - just a lift of the rod will do the trick! BTW I am really enjoying your videos - thank you.

in South Africa we have three of the same species. normal smooth hound with no spots, spotted smooth hound and the black spotted smooth hound. all of them are gully sharks who love to roam the gullies and feed on crabs and stuff. we found the best bait for them to be live mullet or really fresh chokka.
We don't really play the RUclips game. If I was more clickbaity and name dropped every 2 minutes I would be bigger - but we are happy simply sharing what we love doing. 😉👍🏻

A maybe slightly interesting factoid came to me why you said that the Smooth hound has no teeth. Shark skin is covered in dermal denticles as opposed to normal fish scales. As the name would suggest these are like teeth. Its why sharks feel like sand paper.

Fantastic day out there John. Great video. Heading to Florida this week. The mullet run has started. Multiple species to target this time of year.

For me to see fish on the bite, that would be extremely fun. Especially the sound of a rattling reel peeling off line from the spool. Thanks for the video love the sunset on the background too.
