    Terrific video. Those higher end straps sure look awesome. Good job at cutting & burning too ...for a minute I was worried 🙂 Thank you again, I really enjoyed this video 👍👍👍

    For a daily wear watch, a higher grade NATO might make sense, but then again, a cheap NATO strap worn a lot quickly softens and becomes super comfortable. There is a way to wear a NATO single pass without cutting of the tail. Simply fold it back the other way. There are videos showing this.

    • @jltrem
      @jltrem 2 года назад +2

      Really. He pays more for a premium strap then mutilates it. Not very bright in my estimation.

    I have a rule when I buy NATO straps, 1mm thick leave it alone over 1mm thickness chop it off. My tip would be, before chopping feed the loose end through the keepers makes it easier to cut and burn. Great video.

    I have three watches that I've converted to NATO straps. One Field type, with a canvas strap, and Two Dive watches with "Bond" type NATO straps. All the straps were inexpensive $13 straps. The canvas one is just canvas. One of the Bond types is course Nylon, and the other Bond type is "seatbelt" type Nylon. On all of them, I cut off the extra loop, without melting the edges of the cut.
    No problems with the Nylon.

    Instead of butchering a $30 strap theres an alternate way to install it on your wrist that eliminates the double layer under the watch, very simple. Also they make single pass straps that dont require such a drastic step as hacking up a $30 strap.

  • @ctromanus

    the second keeper, which you say isn't doing anything, actually has an important job. In the early days of military issued watches with fixed lug bars; when you put your watch on or took it off the watch could slide off the single pass strap. The second keeper prevents that. It's the reason it was designed.

    • @the1010watchclub
      @the1010watchclub  3 года назад +2

      Agreed. Most of my watches have lugs close to the case, so the NATO straps always had a snug fit, but recently I almost had one slip off a single-pass

    You can also pass your wrist within this second pass, no need to cut the strap, work the same

    • @bluesdog645
      @bluesdog645 3 года назад +3

      Yes and no. It essentially works the same but you end up with more bulk at the bottom of your wrist. It’s not a bad way to go. However, I just personally prefer the simplicity of a single pass over the secondary piece needing to be employed. Neither way is wrong; just a personal preference in my case.

    An alternative is to put the strap on like normal slide the keeper down and put your wrist through it and then buckle it

  • @bmw128racer
    @bmw128racer 3 года назад +2

    Good conversion. A double pass has too much watch band and an extra buckle to contend with... It makes the watch look clunky on your wrist.

  • @piquetuk
    @piquetuk 3 года назад +2

    Single pass FTW, if the aim is less bulk putting the excess material underneath your wrist is just moving the problem, cut it off. Watch on the top buckle underneath, simple.

    I've never really understood why NATO straps were so popular. I've been wearing watches for over 30 years and I've never had a pin break to this day. (although I get it for a soldier or survivalist!) I personally like steel or leather. Although I do have a NATO that's red, white and blue and I sometimes use it on 4th of July. Thanks for the tip, I think I'll change mine. 😊

      I've only broke a spring on my watch once by accident, but soldiers are always crawling and doing destructive stuff to their gear, I guess a NATO strap insures that you won't loose your watch if one of the springs pop off.

      No es necesario que este abrochada cuando se pasa la mano como una de acero, simplemente se abrocha en la muñeca, primero el pasador y luego el broche, aunque de una sola pasada ya sería realmente estilo militar de las primeras épocas cuando los pasadores estaban soldados a las cajas. Nato serian las versiones casi modernas a las fliegeruhr de la aviación alemana qué requerían qué el metal no quemara x bajas temperaturas la piel

    I am a retailer of nato strap. I do sell both the cheap and expensive ones. I have to say - the expensive ones sell for more because they look really "wow" in person. But the manufactiring cost difference is like $1 between them,
    The main issue is longevity. the cheap ones fray really slow or none at all. The seatbelt ones fray and the pin hole area starts pulling apart quite badly. I sell them because people buy and dont seem to have issues with them. But I wear nato straps all the time to test out a product. I have to say I'm not impressed with how messy the pin holes and ends get after daily wear over 2 months or so.

    • @ThatGuy-sc5rx
      @ThatGuy-sc5rx Год назад

      So basically it seems you are saying not to waste time and money on the more expensive ones as they ironically don't last as long and aren't as durable despite looking good ?
      Or do you think NATOs in general just wear out quick?

    • @Professional_Youtube_Commenter
      @Professional_Youtube_Commenter Год назад

      @@ThatGuy-sc5rx the original tubular nylon natos shouldn't wear out quick. in fact they will outlast most leather strap. the seatbelt nato do get tatty after a while though.
      They fray a bit initially but then the frays get trappedd by the weave and dont fray any more, you can tidy them up with nasal grooming scissors and you should be good.

    Just cut the bloody thing down,it takes ten seconds to do and it takes away all the ridiculous fuss of a double pass...never did see the point of that stupid keeper strap,and with a single pass you put the buckle where it's supposed to go,on the bottom of your wrist,not the side.

    Why destroy a good nato strap? Why not just buy a single pass perlon strap? I actually love nato straps bc they give a little pop to smaller watches and also allow to operate buttons and crown with ease on those flatter cases or while using gloves . if you dont like the rise just buy simple perlon strap and your done... like someone would buy nine seater van to ripout all back seats and make it cargo... just no point in it.
