Perlon is better than NATO: Strapville Perlon watch strap review

  • Don't get me wrong, NATO straps are great, but in a lot of cases, particularly when it comes to dress watches, Perlon straps are a far superior choice. But even outside of dress watches perlon straps offer a lot of interesting benefits over NATO straps.
    These straps were provided to me for free by Strapville for the purpose of facilitating the review. You can purchase them from their website below. I also have a 10% off discount code.

    Perlon is the best strap ever. Lightest, breathes the best, drys very fast, is almost infinitely adjustable on the fly, and is just as secure as a nato if one springbar fails.

    I just received my steel-blue perlon from Strapville today to put on my white-dial Heimdallr SKX homage. Shipping was real quick, just 3 days from Sweden to the Netherlands. Loving it so far, it wears really nice. The buckle looks a bit flimsy indeed but I think it'll be fine & if not I can always do a slight modification so I can put a more conventional watch-strap buckle on it. Thanks again for the review and discount-code!

    The watch in the thumbnail (and briefly shown in the video) is the Orient SER2M003W0. I'm in the process of shooting the review for it, and if all goes well it'll be released next week. It's an Orient Dress watch with a cool textured dial, a sapphire crystal, a really high quality solid link bracelet with a milled clasp. It's one that I haven't seen for sale outside of Japan, and is an older discounted model, but occasionally you can find some sellers that have them in stock, including eBay.

      @@the_9ent Since it's discontinued, the price fluctuates a lot depending on where stock pops up. I managed to snag it on Japanese Amazon for $100, but it's since sold out everywhere, and when it does pop up it's usually around $250. Right now Amazon Japan has the two tone version for $100 though.

    the downside with perlon is that because is so light and thin, it doesn't act as any sort of counterbalance to the mass of the watch so you have to wear it tight. the upside is that perlons are your friend if you have odd lug sizes 17, 19, 21 etc. the other thing is that people complaining about natos don't realize they can buy a single layer version, or mod it themselves in less than a minute with a knife and a lighter.

      Try removing the buckle and keeper and washing the straps a few times in your washing machine. Use cold water. They get softer, up to a point. Keep an eye on the welded end to make sure you spot any loose threads. You can melt them solid again with a short blitz from a gas lighter.

    Perlon is actually the name of the material (a special type of nylon) and not the strap type although it's commonly used as such. I think most perlon straps are made of regular nylon and not actual perlon but a German company Eulit makes them by using "real" perlon. I have a couple of their straps and they are great and I pretty much agree with your opinions about perlon being better than nato. The only downside is that you can get just a few basic colours. That's probably the reason for the popularity of nato straps over perlon. You can't have for example a Bond style perlon strap or any other variations with stripes. There are multi-colour perlons available but only with a zig-zag pattern which might be too much for many.

    • @HVG67
      @HVG67 4 года назад

      Didn't take the time to read all the comments but you were ahead of me this is such a rookie mistake. Comparing a material to a watch band style. Like saying "leather is better than a NATO" ... Jeez.. and looking at the style these are basically ZULU bands made out of perlon... Thank you for pointing it out too. 🤦‍♂️ but then you make the same mistake. Perlon is better than NATO? NATO is not a material... It's like saying "Aluminum is better than Art Deco"...

    • @sasropakis
      @sasropakis 4 года назад +2

      @@HVG67 Although perlon is originally just the name of the material it nowadays basically means the type of strap in question so that's why I used it in my comment. As far as I know there isn't any other specific term to describe the strap type so I couldn't use one. The style is more like RAF strap with a nylon keeper than zulu which would have rounded metal keepers. So it's something like "perlon style nylon single-pass RAF type strap with a ladder-shaped buckle" which isn't especially practical term to use.

    Nato straps are better for getting a really long strap to wear over, say, a jacket or glove.
    Perlons are better for wearing the watch at exactly the right tightness.

    My concern about any "nato" style straps, and also the Perlon straps:
    1) They scratch display casebacks over time
    2) They only CAUSE the springbar failures by the way they mount the watch - when the strap gets stuck somewhere and the body movement is PULLING it, the extra way around the watch case will be shortened and the springbars will be popped out / bent / broken.

I'll have a look to see if I can find a EU supplier. edit: just checked the link for the straps and saw they're actually from Sweden, sweet! Also saw you featured the Cadisen in your ten best minimalist watches vid so watching that now. Cheers!

      I really like it. Except that it's 42mm with 21mm lugs. It would have been the deal of the century if they would have released it in 40mm with 20mm lugs. Even still I've been able to squeeze a lot of 22mm straps on, and absolutely love it paired with that blue Perlon. I alos have a slightly larger wrist (7.5 inch) so the 42mm doesn't bother me too much. I love the 6 oclock date, the textured dial and blue second hand are also pretty cool for the price. I haven't released a full review, but if you check out the April Watch of the Month Club video, I showed it off a bit there. Full review hopefully coming in June.

      @@JusttheWatch Thanks for the reply! I just watched that other video where you showed it a bit but will look forward for the full review as well. Yeah, at 7.5 it probably isn't a problem. I have to make due with a skinny 6 incher so I have to be a bit more selective. I do wear 42mm watches though, and I got the yellow CasioOak this week and feel it wears fine. But for a dressier watch it might be a bit much. But it's a beaut for sure so I don't want to write it off just yet. As for the lug-width, it is a bit of a silly size, but I'm willing to deal with that. All the best from the Netherlands.

    Having no holes for the buckle pin means you'll wear the strap out.
    I remember these as being used to keep the locker key on the body when we went to a public pool for swimming in school ... these straps turn into a horrible fringy mess in a very short time.

    I agree with the pros you mentioned on the perlons....
    however I have yet to see a nice, decent quality perlon strap for say about $10~20.
    I once used a perlon, it was stiff and mats used was rough that it added loads of stretches on the case back of my speedy....

      I've ordered a lot from CNS. I love their variety and low prices, they're awesome for trying out new looks. But basically every single strap that I've gotten from them has struck me as being low quality, and as soon as I find one I like, I immediately go looking for a nicer version of the same strap. Haven't tried one of their Jubilee straps yet, they look cool though!

    Although Perlon straps do look nice I don't think they are my style as they are too thin for me and doesn't look right on my wrist. I guess some of us prefer some depth or substance to the strap! :D Not sure maybe it is just looks too tight on your wrist shots but it just doesn't seem right for me.

    It's comparing apples to oranges. G10 NATO straps are military surplus and functional in the field or in the water on the wrist or above the sleeve. The original Marine Nationale straps (not the modern spin offs) have the same funcionality and also had a military purpose. Perlon straps originated as Beatnik fashion straps and don't have or need to have the same durabilty as surplus straps. Great for a night out or desk diving, but not for real diving.

    • @JusttheWatch
      @JusttheWatch  4 года назад +1

      Mostly I'm talking about Perlons being superior when it comes to dress watches. I far prefer a Perlon to the NATO dress watch trend that's popular now. But other than that NATO is definitely more durable and secure, but Perlon dries faster and is more adjustable, so there's trade-offs. But different straps for different situations.

    • @rucksackrules2266
      @rucksackrules2266 4 года назад

      Just the Watch Yes, you're right: different straps for different purposes. It wasn't to critisize the video, but just an explanation of the formation of the different straps. Keep the good work up! You're doing fine.

    I imagine there's no cutting and burning with these. With a Nato, or single pass Zulu, you can burn it like paracord.
    Don't they just COMPLETELY relax when on wrist, like.... slack? I'd think the fit would be undisciplined. think I'd be overtitghtening with it.

    I 100% disagree with this position. This opinion comes straight from the mind of a person whom has not worn this material for more than a minute. IT FRAYS AND FALLS APART, BRO. First, the buckle holes fray. So, as a 'fix', some manufacturers uses a leather bit to reinforce the construction around the holes - totally undesirable solution. Secondly, despite being a synthetic material, it stretches over time since the weave is not tight, to begin with. What every owner is left with is a limp bit of fabric that was once in the shape of a strap.

    I can understand why everyone's pushing perlon. Looking at the quality of the buckle, the weight of nylon per strap and the fact that you can skip the hole punching, extra hardwear attachment and other processing means these can be made for absolute peanuts compared to even a nato. Probably leave the factory at less than 5 cents.
