I have been fortunate and have had some success on RUclips ( 150 million views) and started my channel mid 50. One key to success is identifying your niche and specifically who you are making your videos for. I call this my Avatar and it took my awhile to figure this out but my channel started growing when I knew very clearly who my Avatar was. Also, YT will give you clues with analytics. If a couple of videos have done really well maybe that should go in that direction. If you fight the 800 pound Gorilla it is hard to win, go in the direction you think YT wants.
Good day. Should one just follow the algorithm in this case, even thought it is out of his interests, or rather follow general interest and take hints for detailed content from the algorithm. Could I ask you as an experienced RUclipsr. I love people and connecting to them. I love discussing Life in general, why we are who we are. I like to question what wise heads say, and they perhaps missed. I have on my mind some great creators that run their channels in form of interviews with some cool people. Is is any good direction or is it to broad, not niche enough ? All the best to You and to Kevin! 🙂
True facts! VideoIQ and YT Stufio suggested I stick to videos of beauty (showing pics of me) at 50 🙌🏼💫🤗☀️since I’m a business owner very successful am blessed! As of today, thinking about making a new channel strictly for business and another channel on spiritual and guided meditations. My one month old channel is all of them lol 😂 🤷🏽♀️ to your point, stick to what YT suggests.
Hi Kevin! Interesting that you are over 60 and that you mentioned Sean Cannell. My name is Rex and I just finished watching a live stream with Think Media and I just turned 60 two months ago and I was let go from my job 2 weeks ago. So we have a lot in common. I had a RUclips channel two years ago but I abandomed it because I didn't have the time to dedicate to it because of work. Here I am and I'm finding myself not working once again, and I'm thinking about RUclips for the second time. I've had several jobs over the last six years and I'm so done with working for other companies and large corporations where you're just a number and you're treated like a robot. I appreciate your video so much because I like to write but I also like to make pictures and I'm a bit of a computer nerd. Thank you!
I too just watched the Sean Cannell Think Media 1K challenge week. I’m 63 have a background as an electronics - Computer Tech in the 80’s and a Pro Photographer in the 90’s-2005. Then forced into retirement/ disability due to 5 spine surgeries. I want and need to make RUclips work because I see our savings shrinking daily. If I were you, if you’re able to collect unemployment and get by on that for now, I’d hit the RUclips running. This is your chance. Best of luck & skills to you. Thank You Kevin for your encouragement & positive energy filled videos.
"What could you talk about for 30 minutes straight without any prep?" I love this. I have only recently come across your videos and channel and while I have a couple of monetized channels already I'm really not taking full advantage of YT as a platform for additional income, and have been thinking about "what else can I do?" to make the most of it. This is a very cool piece of advice.
Kevin, Thank You!!! I’m 65, and preparing to start a RUclips channel. I’ve listened to other how-to channels, but you stick to the basics. You’ve made me feel like it’s actually possible without hours of researching the ever changing technologies, apps, and social media. I will be contacting you.
I struggled with creating RUclips content until I found my niche. Now the content just flows like water. It might be water with bits of crap in it, but I don't care. I just love creating it!
Watching multiple videos that you have on your channel. Thank you for encouraging us older people to get on RUclips. I am 68 and working two jobs, I would love to be home as I have been working since I was 14. Most times two and occasionally 3 jobs at the same time. Want to be home with family so they recognize me and remember who I am
I'm 65 years old planning on retire in three more years and just now starting up a RUclips channel my content is not that great but got to start somewhere.
@@KevinKolbe, Hey Kevin. I’m 56 and I mostly watch RUclips because it’s more interesting and more entertaining that anything else. I definitely want to start a RUclips channel but haven’t done anything yet. All I have is an iPhone and Tri pod. Is that sufficient in getting started?
Hi Kevin, I a my well over 40 and did my first youtube video about 12 years ago. My daughter ( youtube star) told me I need to focus on one topic. I did this and began my journey on building my British model railways. It is a small and competitive niche and presently I have 1.4k subs. I produce shorts, Live and long format videos including how to demos. I know there are some very successful channels producing the same subject out there but I haven’t figured out why I am not competing. In the meantime O love doing what I do
Great video Kevin! I'm almost 71, female, and have done many things in my life. While working a full time career as a software IT, I always had a side hustle from webdesign, photography, video editing, to jewelry design and painting. I stopped your video when you posed those questions: what is my passion, what do I like to do? What would I do even if I wasn't paid for it? Opened up my Simplenote and wrote a bunch of stuff down. I would like to go back to POD of my designs, and maybe start a channel for boomers about different things we seniors deal with on a daily basis. Also, I've seen other senior women who are healthy and active talking about why they are still healthy. I can do something like that, exercises, food, my little dog Bella, etc. Keep it on a personal level, not an influencer thing at all. Anyway, you got my wheels turning, thank you!
Kevin, I have seen a lot of videos on how to start a channel, find your niche, etc. You break it down on an existential level for my demographic (60+). You help people see it for themselves. I appreciate your straightforward, practical approach to sharing your knowledge!
Thank you so much for your videos! I love your laidback, chill, no hype approach to this subject. I’m 54 and retired. I will need to work, again, but I am definitely digging the idea of working for myself and doing something fun!
Kevin - your vibe, intention, purpose and energy is so supportive, uplifting, open, inclusive, and energizing! I super enjoy you content and learn so much from your videos. I am in the process of starting my channel! Over 40 here and when you said we all have something we can share to HELP OTHERS - boom 💥 light bulb and heart 💖 fire moment! Thank you so much, in a world full of competition, exclusivity, put downs and oppressive forces - your content brings positive and life giving energy to the world. When I make my video I’d love to tag you in it if you have a min to view it! 🙏😊
Absolutely a God thing that I found your channel. Your style is so laid back, common sense & right up my alley :) Been agonizing for months over starting a yt channel & what my niche would be. This is a real confirmation & encouragement. Thank u, thank u!!!
I think I am in the perfect niche because immediately after I was laid off last year, my colleagues reached out because they missed my stories about helping aging parents who did not make plans for their old age (outside of saving money) and why it's important we do not repeat the cycle. I don't care about monetization, just reach because I am that passionate about it.
Hey Kevin, I’m 26 and you are motivating me to finally start my RUclips Channel. I’m stuck in “what to do?” I feel that the things that I am good at there are a lot of people out there better than me. But you mentioned something mind-changing: our personality is what makes it different, is not about how good I am at it. It is just me. Thank you Kevin
Hi Kevin. Thanks for these! I've been wanting to start but have a broken phone, living in the Yucatan jungle and limited resources, and finding many friends and family discouraging me. I've been praying lately for clear guidance in moving forward in my life, and I feel it's no coincidence I encountered your videos. Like you, i also journal, have exhaustive history in creative endeavors, in my early sixties, philanthropic, socially conscious, and a heart to help, to share the lessons life has presented me... I too feel that our generation needs to be better represented on yt. Thanks for the encouragement. God bless
I’m 60 this year. I am my niche, so to speak. Though, it's a journey at times just allowing yourself to free your voice and speak your truths. I’ve spent 60 years of having extreme visions ahead and then living through them in life while trying to survive into the next day, while mostly hiding and wanting to be a recluse in a world of insanity. I watch videos where people have click bait thumbnails, that do not actually deliver in the video. I see people tell these stories that are outrageous, that parts of me sense are not real, or are just crazy, or just trying to become famous and willing to say or do anything. And I sit in my chair in front of my computer and just wonder....... How do I really come forward and speak about such extremely epic experiences that I have had in life when I don't want to sensationalize it all. It doesn't need that since it's often too epic for many to even believe it's real. Do I even dare try to live more openly honestly in life? Life is weird. Thanks for doing your thing here! It’s appreciated.
@@Honeybee-Hedgehog-Designs I figure for my channel I am my niche. My experiences in life and my perspectives are my channel and my voice. Though as well. Society has issues with stark truth bigger than the narrative of discourse knows how to respond to. So if my channel grows, will depend on if there are more responsive people or reactive people on RUclips. It's weird to speak so openly knowing what you say would actually make your videos viral instantly if people were able to pay attention. But I've lived years of watching what I say go over people's head or for them to assume I am the one who's not making sense. Society is curious like that. 🤐 Best Wishes on your Channel!
decided to start a RUclips channel. I am 75, have lots of travel journals, going to use them in some fun way, Gearing my channel towards shut ins, who would travel but can't. Found you by accident, love your videos, I bet you were a fun coworker. thanks for your help
Greeting from KANKAKEE-CHICAGO, IL, USA! I'm age 73 going on 43! Thanks Mr. Kevin for this highly informative and enlightening podcast! Your videos are what I've needed to get starting in creating my RUclips page! AMEN-ASE!
I think passion may override “expert”. People like watching something you enjoy and show a passion in versus watching an expert talk about rocket science (think about it) Dont be discouraged if you feel like you are not an expert in something but love having fun!
Hey - I am 73 and about to start a reaction channel. I like your video here - it reminds me of so many things I know about that I just take for granted. I am a radio presenter, sound/recording engineer, have taught internet and video to over 60s - on and on it goes. No real excuses eh!?! Oddly, I keep putting it off. Guess I am good at procrastinating as well!!!
I’m 46 this year, planning my first podcast by end Oct or early Nov 2024! I’m so glad that I’ve found your channel, and the insights you gave sparked me! The questions you pointed out did help me to zoom in my niche, I’m in the functional health space, currently helping out low income families in the ADHD community by giving free consultations 🙆🏻
Love this! I manage medical meetings and events professionally and my docs joked a few months ago about me having to present at some point. I told them I would only do it if they were okay with hearing about travel, vanlife, and the art of interviewing. That was when I knew it made no sense to focus my channel on living with long COVID, even if it helped a few people. It's so important to focus on something you truly enjoy because creating content can be a lot of work at times. Good luck to everyone who's figuring out where to start (or restart)!
Hi Kevin. Nice video. I have been making videos for a few years, and the question I always have is exactly this- What is my niche? Still working through it, but in the meantime, I encourage anyone with a skill or talent to start a youtube channel! A few have done it, most give up, but I still encourage it. Recently I have started referring your channel to people. It is refreshing to see someone who isn't pushing the whole "get rich on youtube" angle.
Wow, I'm really glad that I found your channel today, Kevin. This over 40 thing is really something, isn't it? I'm approaching 50 now 😬! I had some great experience with TV production and videomaking several years ago, but then I moved here to the US, got into other areas, then the military for several years, and now I'm struggling to get back and do what I love, which is video production stuff. I have been doing a lot of photography the past 7 years, mainly wildlife/nature and travel images, and the RUclips idea has crossed my mind many times, but I really never jumped into it. The whole video editing stuff is what scares me the most, I'd say. Plus, having enough interesting stuff to talk about and make it worthwhile. Honestly, I do need help. I'd LOVE to be able to do this as a full-time occupation, live somewhere a lot cheaper than Colorado, but still can't find my way into this journey. Well, just wanted to appreciate you for the encouragement, definitely helps. Thank you very much. Best regards, Monty
Thank you for sharing your story and thank you for your service too! My short advice is, create with what you have and "slow" into it, if that makes sense. Thanks for watching.
This video has me so stoked up and the information you gave has me moving forward to start my own RUclips channel at the age of 63. I have already watched 3 of your videos and am looking forward to your next video.
Trying to figure it all out, setting up a RUclips channel and what to do. Wanted to be a television anchor when I was younger, but I could not get a job in that area. I definitely want to encourage the world with whatever talents I have.
Hey Kevin! Thanks for this great video. Also, I didn’t know you were a special-needs parent. It takes a special type of person to raise a child with special needs. Our daughter has autism and is nonverbal as well. Much love to you man!
I just made some notes from your video, especially "Ask yourself what would you do even if you did not get paid?" - that's can opener question for me. Thank you Kevin
A while back, I helped a friend filmed for his youtube channel. The process of idea creating, go out and filming him, transferring files to the computer, edit it, revise editing, and launch That whole process for 3 months helped me gain ideas on the niche that suits me better
Hello Kevin, I’m Oliver. I’m 52 years old and I recently opened my first RUclips channel where I want to make videos on specific topics that aim to help people think more positively and get less upset, because I believe that this really harms our lives and deteriorates our future. Since I’m still a complete beginner, I constantly have new ideas and I'm not sure if I should really show my face or if I want to do everything with AI. I’m still in a bit of a discovery phase, but your video has really encouraged me to tackle this now and to show my face, so you’ll soon be able to see me. In the past few days, I have initially worked on the appearance and name of the channel. The name of my brand new channel is Mindful Manifestation Mastering. 🤪 Thanks for your content you got my thumbs up as well as my subscription. 🤩It is not (less) about money, it is (more) about peace!
Nice video. And you don't need extra gear or a space. One guy I follow built a large channel on current events & commentary using his phone, sitting in his vehicle. They were only 5-10 min videos. He takes a news item & connects the dots for people. He's since gone fancy but I miss the original format!
@KevinKolbe great video and great ideas! Love your channel! For anyone watching, take Kevin's ideas to heart. Another idea I've been thinking about lately, is to look at your RUclips video watch history, what content info/topics do you consume the most and spend most of your time thinking about? One may not know everything about a topic/subject, but you likely know more about 1 thing than other people. Hopefully this is helpful!
Hi Kevin! I just found your channel, serendipitously, a few minutes ago and watched, liked, and subscribed to your video about why people over 40 should start a channel. We are close in age, and thus I resonate with your adventures and your branching out into this new area--though it sounds like you have great, related experience from your prior career. I appreciate your encouragement and practical advice in the two videos I'm now seen tonight. Also, I feel that your general advice is spot on and excellent. I have kept a computer file for several years of some creative and money-making ideas, and for about a year, the file has included a number of ideas for one or more types of RUclips channels. It might be a blessing or a curse that I have a diverse background, particularly with academia, and I have a pretty much insatiable curiosity for almost everything. After I get one main thing off of my plate in two months and another major thing at least much better handled/reduced within that same time, I'd love to launch something. Thanks again for the info and inspiration. My best to you and your family!
Kevin, you give me affirmation on my thoughts. You’re onto something! When I was a kid I used to say “THIS is what I will do the rest of my life”. It’s morphed over time, but relatively the same. Great advice! True on honing your niche!! Thanks for all the great insight.
Honestly its been hard just to ship my art. Write a song and put it out there. Its a challenge for me because I know there are better song writers, musicians, artist out there. As a creator sometimes you can get bogged down that your voice and art will never be seen or worse rejected. What helped me recently was a posted a track and the very first night someone left a wonderful comment. Even if your art helps one person.... think of that. Without you posting it that one person would be in the same place. You helped someone!
Thanks for sharing your art. And knowledge... I turned 50 this year and have been considering this for about a year... your message of the first 2 videos I have seen are very encouraging and inspiring thank you for your efforts to make people greater than they believe possible...
One of my problems is narrowing it down. I'd love to do a crafting channel, but I do so many different things. If I narrowed it down too much, I would get bored. I also like reading and gardening, lol. What to do what to do...
@KevinKolbe Why would be to share my love of creating things. Art, knitting, crocheting, gardening. I think maybe alternate a crafty video with a vlog. I can chat about reading and gardening on my vlog, and the art videos become more about what I create. Hmmm..
Thank you, sir! I just started a channel about a month ago. It is about just having a conversation about life. I want to help people navigate life better and it helps me in return. One day it is geared towards the younger generation on how to ready themselves for the workforce, another conversation is about a book I'm reading about productivity, while another conversation is about having a not so great day. It's interesting, a nice creative outlet, and hoping the conversation may help someone along the way. Here's to over 40 content! 🤌👏👆
Thank you for the advice. I'm 55. I work a full-time job, but I want to build a channel. I've been in some form of construction for 37 years. I have, what I call, crafting ADHD. I do a zillion projects and I want to share those experiences. Both the successes and the failures. I think it's good for learning to show the failures. I started making my list of traits and hobbies to build off of. I need to get comfortable in front of the camera, that is for sure. lol
So glad to find your channel! Such good stuff, and I love your speaking style! I'm disabled at 63 and just started a faceless short story channel. I've had several back surgeries, so I can't sit at or stand at a computer for more than about 10 minutes at a time. I'm doing everything on my iPad and phone, with just a few minor things on my Mac and I'm having SO much fun! I love that you are so encouraging for the older crowd. Would love to see you do a video for disabled people that maybe don't know that with ai, it is possible to create content with a mobile device, even if they have to lay down to do it! What convinced me to start is the fact that books have always cost $. But now, people can find stories, knowledge & information free, or with a yt subscription. And there are so many good stories out there about history, pirates, fairy tales, sport heroes, whatever, it's just endless. Just a thought, thank you for your good info, and I will be scheduling a session with you soon!
Thanks for your videos. The “if money was no issue “ and “if I had to talk for 30 minutes without notes” were very pleasing confirmations that what I’m doing is (one of) the right thing(s). Been On YT for three years now, and I’m growing very slowly with an almost respectable 4900 subs, but not enough watch-hours in the preceding 365 days yet (60 hours shy. Still). If I didn’t like what I’m doing I probably would have stopped by now. Thanks for your style of communicating. And just thanks!!!
I have so so so many note books bc I love to write myself 😂😂 some I just scribble an jot my thoughts an creations how I feel etc...I've never went back an actually looked back on. I appreciate that!!!
Thanks for this video I asked my subscribers what I do best on my channel just to see what they say. Got me thinking and I'm 33 lol. Not quite 40 but it still helps
Hi Kevin. I have really enjoyed some of your videos. Thanks for sharing. I’m 46, turning 47 on 1st October. My issue is that I have been in the civil service in the Uk for some years. I can’t disclose my job title and i am not allowed to discuss this in the public. This is where the 95 percent of my knowledge and expertise are. So, I’m kind of stuck. But I really want to get into the RUclips business. I am researching everyday and open to ideas which I have gotten some from your videos to try out. Thanks for the encouragement.
As much as I'm big on video, I get that there are some, I do believe only a very few, that it may not be the best medium for. Are there workarounds? Yes. All depends on the goal for the channel.
@@KevinKolbe I’m so impressed with the way you engage and the speed at which you respond. Very impressive indeed. My ultimate goal is to gain financial freedom and to quit my 9 - 5pm job to be able spend more time with my family especially with my last child with special needs.
"You can always change over time" Oh my, forgetting this fact has got me stopped trying so many times. My brains will have some idea, it sounds and feels great. But then they realize that it may change, it may evolve something else and it will eventually become something else. And then they start talking that it's no use to start anything, you don't have the patience and "grind mindset" to get really good at that (or near perfect). So, why bother? Why start? You can always change, and it will happen, no matter what. And that is the thought what I need to hang on. For me it gives so much relief and peace to remind myself that everything will change, evolve and the original idea will eventually fade way and it is just ok like that. Thank you Kevin! I just found your channel and it gave me right away a better feeling! Have a good day and many greetings from Finland!
Thank you for this. I tried and didn't succeed with my RUclips channel like I thought I would.....I just need to find that THING that will interest people from all over, not just my state I live in.
Very interesting content. I’ve been thinking along similar lines lately about the next chapter. Laid off and over 60, I’m seeing this as a fresh start. Thank you for saying out loud what I’ve been thinking.
I sent out the first question today into 2 of my social networks. What am I an expert at.... So we'll see what the results are. Great advice in here. Ive done some of it on and off over the years. Great content.
Hi a new subscriber here from Australia, I’m blocked by health n seems a never ending roller coaster of trying to stay alive through so much pain, I doubt anyone would wanna know , I know a lot about that unfortunately. I know a lot about the ugly stuff and how much I’ve had to take . It’s not fun or unique as billions have endured worse im sure . I started to get ready but I got whammed by a series of unfortunate events that to this day I’m not over yet , another unexpected injury out of just getting off the lounge and ended up in the emergency department. 🤪 that was crazy ! Who’s Gunna be interested in that ! I hope to find calm waters for a while one day . I’m tired of being dumped by another of life’s waves 🌊. It’s like a fantasy dream to make something of value out of all the crap 💩 but I’m getting old and not sure . I have nobody who treats me well in my family . Nor friends. I pray I’ll know if there’s anything I can contribute. Ty
Bless you. There is a tomorrow that will be brighter. Speak words of gratitude into your experience as if it IS happening right now. Believe deeply in the unbelievable. Faith and surrender that God's got You (not religious) brings a new dawn. 🙏
Thank you. I'm in my 60 and about to launch my RUclips channel after procrastinating for decades. I like the way you put it : doing what you know the best could evacuate lot of fear, apprehension and stress. I'll follow your advice. Thank you again ❤❤❤
Really enjoy listening to you talk, regardless of topic. But this one is sparking my interest, particularly because I feel you speaking "directly to me" with your thoughts here. Really enjoying what you're bringing to the table and how you're highlighting the fundamental importance of creation at it's core. Subbed, looking forward to crawling through your channel 🙂
Hey kevin! Just randomly discovered your account today! You’re awesome! Thanks for all the tips ! I’m 56. You’ve inspired and motivated me to focus more on you tube vs. insta (I’ve tried that but seems impossible to grow an account organically and it’s such a grind…) I just started an online academy to create a digital course and my niche is about running (helping non-runners become avid runners for better mental and physical health, I’m a former running “hater” and have a turnaround story :) and they say I need a place to post weekly content so thanks to your input I’m gonna go with RUclips ! Look forward to seeing more of your content! peace ✌️ ~Dee
Kevin !! Love the channel! I too use to work for FOX/NBC TV out of San Antonio was on air several times. I’m 55 years old and a premed student! I could talk for 30 mins on Fitness (I use to train NBA Players) I could talk about Mental Health, I can talk about being wrongfully convicted, Abused , Domestic violence from a man’s perspective etc! We should connect and collaborate
AGREED! I went back to jot down some nots the second time through as I was downloading the worksheet. I guess I have it in Kevin's own words as well as mine!
Ok, Ok, I am stopping my "mini binge" (as soon as I post this 😊) This is my THIRD video in a row of yours that I have watched. Well, I will now go and DO. I will DO some of the suggested exercises. Again. You see, I've been at this for a few years, actually! BUT I did get my book written, thank the Lord. NOW, to use that as my springboard to continue to "Equip women to confidently travel so that they can walk in wonder on this amazing planet God designed." Ok, here I go 🧳
Thanks for the tips and inspiration. Also I think it applies to all ages looking for a change in career path and it is great to get advice from those with prior life experience 👍
Wow! I don’t often comment on videos, but I just wanted to say “Thank You!” for this video! Your advice in this video helped me with ways to actually figure out what I should focus on. I have so many hobbies and things I do, but struggle to figure out what I should spend time focusing on. Great video!!
Hello Kevin well thanks a lot just watched a couple of your videos to get started on RUclips. I’m 75 and still doing well, you really helped me in letting go of my image let’s say and worries about being too old. I made a list for myself and now have a lot to talk about from my life experiences. Cheers Brian
Thank you!!!! I got inspired. :) My father alwats said that when your employee time is over, it´s time for you to become "the teacher" and I grew up with that mindset... I´m turning 44 this month, 3 yrs since I had to divorce, with 3 young kids and still finding out I´m already in the "teacher" stage of my life... I can´t lie, this is a big and painful transformation, so your channel and your words feel so alleviating to my soul. Thank you! I´ll begin my channel.. finally!
@KevinKolbe if I have any questions would it be okay to ask you here? I love that you were in the industry. Once I post something on my channel I will share with you if ok.
Hey Kevin my name is Deborah and I really want to start a RUclips channel, however I’m having trouble connecting the dots! To start first. I enjoyed watching your channel , it’s very helpful ! Thank you
Man, I really like your channel dude, I watched a bunch of gurus and they talk in geek and I don’t know what the hell they’re saying, dude it sounds like you’re just relating to me and you have found your niche lol! I’m a subscriber man. I needed this.
Came across your channel yesterday. It’s been great watching and listening to your advice. Thank you You got me motivated and i started YouTubing again today 🎉
As I’ve said in my comment earlier, I wish I saw your videos sooner! I should have a RUclips channel for my business! And help my business partners as well.
Wow awesome break down on how to find your niche…the questions about being good at something or asking others what you’re an expert at and also what I could talk about for thirsty minutes even if I wasn’t getting paid for it 👌🏾🔥🔥🔥 now I have a starting point because of you good sir…thank you and now I’m off to break generational curses 👌🏾🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for your insight Kevin. I'm 62 and you have inspired me to get my You Tube channel going. In fact right after I watched your RUclips for over 40 video. I uploaded two diy video shorts on Disc Sander comparisons to my channel.I used videos from Google photos I had previously recorded...fingers crossed 🤞, I mean it's not much but it's a start , so thanks again and I have subscribed to your channel with 2 thumbs up so far!
Thank you for sharing this... it makes sense... and it helped me to make my own "mission" statement for the youtube nieche I want to focus on... greatly appreciated.
Hey Kevin, I told you I'd be back lol. I agree with you 💯 and finally I have found someone that speaks my speed. Thanks for sharing your wisdom here. Quick story about creating a RUclips channel about what you're passionate about or are good at. My channel is about home repair and helping the viewers save money by doing their own fixes around their homes. That wasn't enough for me. I started another channel about atvs and side by sides. Plus I help others with their titles and descriptions (SEO). As well as thumbnails for their vids. You could say I keep busy. Then over the last year or so I've been wanting to start another channel just like yours here. But I haven't because I think I may spreading myself too thin if I do. Maybe one day down the road I will. I was thinking that would be a good video topic for you. Many people spread themselves too thin by creating too many channels and then those channels don't flourish as well if they had put all their energy into one or two channels. Anyways enjoying your content, your style and isn't that what it's all about? Finding people that resonate with your message and style! 😊
I just found your channel and I'm really enjoying your videos. You worked on Terra Nova! That is still one of my favorite shows. I rewatch it every so often. I still can't believe it only got one season.
I could talk on the spot for thirty minutes if told to. I've had it done to me a couple of times at conventions for a company. i have thought about talking about Men's health over the age of 45. The idea came from friends and people i knew, dyeing of things they failed to have checked by a doctor. But I want to talk about other things. When I watched this video, the vision got clearer. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Thanks for the encouraging video, Kevin. This might be a long comment but here it goes. I am a sewist and I sew handbags and other things, but my focus is on handbags/accessories. I started a RUclips channel about 3 years ago in hopes I could do videos of sewing handbags, but I got discouraged because I couldn’t find any pattern designer to allow me to make videos of their bags. I only have two 2 horrible videos on that channel, related to sewing but not me sewing anything. They are more of slideshow/videos than actual videos. Since then, I started another channel called ThatsMyGig03 and so far, I have vacation videos of a recent trip we took to the Bahamas and 3 RUclips Progress videos I started doing 3 weeks ago. That channel started April 2024 but has a 2-month gap due to a hand injury. I am now trying to remain consistent in growing my channel, but I am torn between Sewing Tutorials or Just the travel / daytrip around Michigan videos. I recently received an opportunity to make a sewing tutorial for a designer I have been speaking to and I am wondering if I should Add it to my recent channel that is growing, very, very slowly but growing or if I should have two channels and see which one makes a go. I really don’t want to manage two channels, but the sewing name has nothing to do with Travel. What a conundrum, right? LOL!!!!
Thanks for sharing and feel free to comment as long as you want! I can get it. Two things unrelated that you enjoy doing and apparently are really good at too. I would advise you, and most anyone, from starting a 2nd channel too soon. One can be a lot but two will take twice the focus if you want to grow it to whatever level of success you want. I can't tell you which other than consider which one you feel you could sustain the longest and in turn could sustain you too.
Kevin - Luuuuvvvvving your videos! I have my niche, writing, illustrating and selling funny women greeting cards...and lots!!!! My challenge is finding a way to stand out in my niche enough to get viewers. My line has a definite pov - Vanity & the question I'm asked allllll the time is where doideas come from. I'm playing with balancing "sharing funny story behind given cards" and using that as jumping point to offering idea prompts:.. I have the niche, the visuals and am working like crazy to pull into focus!!! Your vids help!
How would you describe your viewer avatar, if you don't mind sharing? I'm in education also and considering starting a channel.
My one month old channel is all of them lol 😂 🤷🏽♀️ to your point, stick to what YT suggests.
,How to you figure out your niche? I have many interests and hobbies. I’m thinking about starting a RUclips channel.
Thank you!
Shared backgrounds indeed! I've had great jobs in the past, miss my team in TV, but I do love working for myself too. Thanks for sharing and watching.
@@cruikshank absolutely! I’m banging out several long and short form videos per week! Thank you for your great advice!
Glad it helped.
Nice. Glad it helped, thanks!
I struggled with creating RUclips content until I found my niche. Now the content just flows like water.
It might be water with bits of crap in it, but I don't care. I just love creating it!
"The world needs me"... I like that.
Thank you 😎👍
Watching multiple videos that you have on your channel.
We typically judge our work the hardest. Give yourself grace and just create! You never know who needs it!

Very cool. Glad it helped.
Kevin, I have seen a lot of videos on how to start a channel, find your niche, etc. You break it down on an existential level for my demographic (60+). You help people see it for themselves. I appreciate your straightforward, practical approach to sharing your knowledge!
I appreciate that! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your videos! I love your laidback, chill, no hype approach to this subject. I’m 54 and retired. I will need to work, again, but I am definitely digging the idea of working for myself and doing something fun!
I'm 57 and my first love is music. I see my channel growing and I thankyou for the motivation.
Appreciate your kind words. Let's go!
He does have a good affect. Very easy to watch.
Absolutely a God thing that I found your channel. Your style is so laid back, common sense & right up my alley :) Been agonizing for months over starting a yt channel & what my niche would be. This is a real confirmation & encouragement. Thank u, thank u!!!
Wow! Thank you so much for sharing that. Really means a lot! Let us know when you start!
Appreciate that.
God bless
Sounds like you've got great life experience to pull from and share. Create with whatever you have.
@@tlvance3973 you could literally just create content about living in the jungle! That would be insanely popular. Be real and authentic, just be you.
I feel the same way I hate click bait ! I’m trying to get ready to figure out my channel and launch . You should go for it !
What a fantastic idea! Do it!
Greeting from KANKAKEE-CHICAGO, IL, USA! I'm age 73 going on 43! Thanks Mr. Kevin for this highly informative and enlightening podcast! Your videos are what I've needed to get starting in creating my RUclips page! AMEN-ASE!
"73 going on 43" LOVE IT!
I think passion may override “expert”. People like watching something you enjoy and show a passion in versus watching an expert talk about rocket science (think about it) Dont be discouraged if you feel like you are not an expert in something but love having fun!
Wise words friend!
Go for it!
Very cool to hear that! Thank you for watching.
49 year old here, 50 tomorrow. Man, I am sooo glad that I found your channel. ✌️
Happy birthday!
@@KevinKolbe thank you sir!
Just left a comment on your other video and then this one came up. Awesome
Hi Kevin.
Appreciate that. Thank you!
Photography and cinematography, especially of nature, ignite my heart and soul!
I'm so glad!
Really appreciate that. Our son is nonverbal too. Small world. Blessed life!
I just made some notes from your video, especially "Ask yourself what would you do even if you did not get paid?" - that's can opener question for me. Thank you Kevin
Glad to hear it helped. Thanks
A while back, I helped a friend filmed for his youtube channel.
The process of idea creating, go out and filming him, transferring files to the computer, edit it, revise editing, and launch
That whole process for 3 months helped me gain ideas on the niche that suits me better
Very cool!
Im 57 and binge watching your content. Thank you🎉 its inspiring and easy to follow practical and very informative!
You are so welcome!
Nice video. And you don't need extra gear or a space. One guy I follow built a large channel on current events & commentary using his phone, sitting in his vehicle. They were only 5-10 min videos. He takes a news item & connects the dots for people. He's since gone fancy but I miss the original format!
Yep, use what you got to just create.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing.
@KevinKolbe Thank you! My pleasure!
Como você é legal Kevin!!! E como o seu canal é importante pra mim!!! Obrigado Amigo!!!
Isso realmente significa muito. Obrigado por compartilhar isso. Obrigado também por assistir!
So true. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing your art. And knowledge... I turned 50 this year and have been considering this for about a year... your message of the first 2 videos I have seen are very encouraging and inspiring thank you for your efforts to make people greater than they believe possible...
Thank you so much!
One of my problems is narrowing it down. I'd love to do a crafting channel, but I do so many different things. If I narrowed it down too much, I would get bored. I also like reading and gardening, lol. What to do what to do...
You can do more than one thing if that's what you want for your channel. Before you start consider your WHY first.
Thanks for sharing
Great idea! Thank you for sharing.
Great message about getting started after 40. I’m 57 and your words resonated with me.
Thanks
Thank you Kevin 🐸💚
Thanks for your videos. The “if money was no issue “ and “if I had to talk for 30 minutes without notes” were very pleasing confirmations that what I’m doing is (one of) the right thing(s).
Been On YT for three years now, and I’m growing very slowly with an almost respectable 4900 subs, but not enough watch-hours in the preceding 365 days yet (60 hours shy. Still).
If I didn’t like what I’m doing I probably would have stopped by now.
Thanks for your style of communicating. And just thanks!!!
Really appreciate that. Very cool too that you're close! Glad to hear you're loving too what you do.
I have so so so many note books bc I love to write myself 😂😂 some I just scribble an jot my thoughts an creations how I feel etc...I've never went back an actually looked back on. I appreciate that!!!
Very cool. I haven't gone back through my notes as much. Doing so for this video was cool to see things I'd written down over the last few years.
"You can always change over time"
Oh my, forgetting this fact has got me stopped trying so many times.

Shout-out to another former FOX/NBC dude! All those topics sound great. Just start.
That Niche Finder Worksheet is Gold. It's a smart formula for finding your niche!
Appreciate that friend!
AGREED! I went back to jot down some nots the second time through as I was downloading the worksheet. I guess I have it in Kevin's own words as well as mine!
Wow, my eyes just opened right there, “even if I don’t get paid” passion. I thank God I came across your videos, the Lord bless you Kevin🙏
Thank you so very much. Glad it lit a 🔥 for you!
NOW, to use that as my springboard to continue to "Equip women to confidently travel so that they can walk in wonder on this amazing planet God designed." Ok, here I go 🧳
WOOOOO-HOOOOOO! Sounds like you definitely know your path too! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the tips and inspiration. Also I think it applies to all ages looking for a change in career path and it is great to get advice from those with prior life experience 👍
Thanks
Wow! I don’t often comment on videos, but I just wanted to say “Thank You!” for this video! Your advice in this video helped me with ways to actually figure out what I should focus on. I have so many hobbies and things I do, but struggle to figure out what I should spend time focusing on. Great video!!
Thanks for watching and your comments too.
I’m so glad I found your channel. Excellent content and genuinely inspiring.
I appreciate that! Thank you!
Thanks for the suggestion, Kevin
You bet!
Let's go!
Thanks heaps, Kevin🙏🏼 Your content is very insightful 💐
I appreciate that!
“Would you continue to do this even if you didn’t get paid”? Never thought of it that way. Love you videos btw.
Appreciate that. Thank you for watching.
OoooBoy look at the New Look ( Background looks good l, it's all in the Lighting 😊)
Thanks!
Great information. 63 years old here TY for your time!👍👍👍👍
You bet!
Kevin is an expert at lucid communication. Good work!
Dang! I might make me a t-shirt with that on it! Thanks!
Thank you! I´ll begin my channel.. finally!
Thanks for watching and sharing too.
Blessings and luck for your creative future teaching❤
Wow! I am ao glad I found your channel! I just created my channel. Have not uploaded anything yet. I am 54. You're a wealth of knowledge! Thank you! 🎉
Thanks for watching!

Man, I really like your channel dude, I watched a bunch of gurus and they talk in geek and I don’t know what the hell they’re saying, dude it sounds like you’re just relating to me and you have found your niche lol! I’m a subscriber man. I needed this.
I really appreciate that! I started to say "its all geek to me..." but... 😂 Thanks for watching!
Came across your channel yesterday. It’s been great watching and listening to your advice. Thank you
You got me motivated and i started YouTubing again today 🎉
Yes!
As I’ve said in my comment earlier, I wish I saw your videos sooner! I should have a RUclips channel for my business! And help my business partners as well.
Today is a good day to start. 😁
I am interested. I have no experience ..I have been thinking about it . Thank you for this. Introduction
You are most welcome
Like your videos, I wish you could put all this in a course like how to set up a studio with different budget options... God bless
Hmmmmm....great idea. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Now LET'S GO!
Let's go! Congrats for starting!
Thank you for sharing this... it makes sense... and it helped me to make my own "mission" statement for the youtube nieche I want to focus on... greatly appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!
This was very helpful. Thanks, Kevin! I especially liked asking others what they consider you to be an expert in.
Appreciate that bro!
Nice to meet you Kevin. Love the video, love your style and content. I’m 44 and looking to get started and you have inspired me to do so. 👊
So cool! Thanks for watching and sharing too!
Very cool. Good idea too for a future video. Thanks for sharing that and more of your journey too.
I liked Terra Nova!! Great Video - makes me think.
Terra Nova was a fun show. Got better as the season went on too.
I just found your channel and I'm really enjoying your videos. You worked on Terra Nova! That is still one of my favorite shows. I rewatch it every so often. I still can't believe it only got one season.
And it got better as the season went too.
Great upload , starting my RUclips channels was the best career move I made
So cool to hear that. Thanks for sharing.
This is great - thank you!
@@wallacesheckells7095 appreciate that. Glad it helped.
Thanks for always giving great advice 😮
Sure thing
Sounds like a tough choice! Maybe try mixing the sewing content into your current channel and see how it goes. Best of luck!
Thanks for sharing that. Keep creating!
Excellent guide for those seeking the topic, well done.
Much appreciated!
Got my Niche! Made my first (cringe) video! Can't wait to make a difference in someone's life.
Let's Go!!!
Lol nice 😂
Thank you for this one! You help me confirm right away that I am on the right path.
Wonderful!
