  • In this video, I’ll go over different aspects of play that - in my opinion - make a good player in SMITE. Additionally, I will address how you can improve in those different aspects (“3 pillars”) yourself and become a better player over time with various different methods of practice and improvement.
    What makes a good player? (3 pillars)
    • Game knowledge
    • Mechanical skill
    • Decisionmaking
    • Shotcalling, map awareness
    Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe.. or don't, if you don't feel like it... really. It's up to you. It's a sloth life after all.

      And then report people just because they played poorly in a game. Because that just boosts the legitimacy of reports, and makes it so much easier on HiRez to get rid of the players they need to.

    Duke, I appreciate and thank you for all the dedication you put into Smite. When I started playing early on I never used relics, never used basics, and died, alot. Then I came across 2xTap and Was inspired to play Tyr. After his changes I started failing in ranked and disappointing myself. Not that Tyr is weak right now but it felt wrong to play a god that changed so significantly after no change in two years. I felt lost and hopeless. So I started branching out and looking for a new Main. Then, I found you, a cautious and meticulous Smite player who understands Smite on a religious level. I came to you for help and you gave me the information I was looking for. I was about to quit Smite because playing Tyr was the only thing I really enjoyed doing. But I asked you about Xing and how I could utilize him best. You got me started on the right track and gave me a good Idea of where I need to go, and now, after DAYS of looking for the best items and strategies (Because there isn't a dedicated Xing community unlike Tyr). I found it. I found a god that not only felt comfortable, but competitive. DukeSloth, Thank You for restoring my love for Smite.

      DukeSloth I really do thank you, honestly I was done with Smite because of the horrible meta in season 3, but when I had that Ranked game when I went 14/4/31 and had 50K mitigated damage I KNEW I found my new main, and now I am even thinking about starting a channel and a twitch dedicated to smite. Thanks Duke! Keep making these videos. I can actually DO all the things you talked about in this video because I went back and watched ones you have made previously for help. I love your content Duke, keep up the good work.

    actual serious tip: while waiting on queues, read the abilities and passive of gods you aren't familiar with, or might not own; just because you haven't played character, doesn't mean you have to be 100% blind to its kit
    one other actual tip: in post game lobbies, talk to your opponents; if you don't know what mistakes you made, they probably will, and who knows, they might even want to party up and show you the ropes

    • @hamdoggyy7844

      That's a good tip and after 2500+ hours. I can agree at this point I no every God inside and out and normally no everything about new gods before release so I get a heads up. And about having a thick skin xD skins can be good and bad, example is DJ Janus is a lot louder than RiftShaker Janus and another the first time I used Ragnrok Force X Thor Skin I died a lot more often because I thought I was either a warrior or some untouchable Gundum lmao

    To be a good player in smite you must never have a bad game. Never get negative score. Never die to 4 man ganks. Never lose lane as an early god who is prone to losing lane to a lane bully (example: Amaterasu vs Ravana). If you have 99 good games in which you hard carry your team but fall behind 1 match out of 100, due to being camped or whatever, you are a horrible shit trash weak bad player. One bad game in which you are being hard camped by 4 people is enough to make all your team think you are the most horrible smite player of all times and get 4x report. You can even make fun of people like that, so quick, grab your party and 5 man que conquest. Gank a single enemy repeatedly and make him go 0-10. You will make that poor dude's day one of the shittiest he ever had. You will make his team call him trash and report him on top of you ruining his game anyway... This is smite.

    Decisionmaking? what the hell is that? Most of the time I end up with braindead people who think they can fight 1v4 or 1v5 and then afterwards blame the team for not helping. The same goes for Map awareness a 1v5 all the time i cant stand these guys anymore.

    Two more tips that helped me:
    1. Set up your UI layout similar to what is seen here in the video. (Faster to see who has ultimates up, who is alive in general, and of course, faster to check the minimap.)
    2. Make kill-feed messages smaller, make them a bit transparent, and possibly change where they pop. (Personally I feel the default kill-feed messages cover up important parts of the screen and often cause you to have to look behind them.)

    Dear newbies (not trying to offend you) remember : Use Ults and Relics. I swear I rarely use Ults early cause it ' won't kill the enemy,and don't use relics if I know I won't get killed with that 1 ability or while cc'd. The problem is that you WILL get chased,and they might kill you after a few attacks if you indured all the stuff while being cc'd instead of using beads and took that ULT instead of Aegising.

    You forgot something very important that dictates decision making really and that is how many allies are still alive/dead, how many enemies are dead/alive, which dmg sources on our team are still alive/dead, which dmg sources on their team are still alive/dead, how much hp do we have to contest something, how much hp do they have to contest something, how long are their respawn timers, where are we currently located on the map, where are the enemies currently located on the map, where are our minions waves currently, what objective/objectives can we do gf, pyro, fg, tower, phoenix and in what order can we do them most efficiently with the time we have left if we can do more than 1 objective.

    a strong piece of advice I can give to help is to actually put your visual settings on lower settings. This can help you to keep a higher / better / more consistent fps and as a result, helps you to better react to your situations.
    As for shot calling, when you have somebody who shot calls, think about *why* they suggested their call. This can help you to get into the Mindset instead of just copying what you see.
    Kinda comes back to the saying 'give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime' If you just learn to parrot a build or shotcalling ext then you arent expanding or learning much beyond it. Yes you may learn that it doesn't always work but that's what you have to expand further on. Why do things work and other times not? THINK! ^-^
    The final tip is to have a play about with your UI and find a better grouping of information that suits you. having the map so small and tucked away in a. order makes it harder to flick your eyes to so you'll see many people move it more central and drop the opacity. same thing for buffs / debunks amd even ally / enemy spawn timers. Knowing when someone is about to respawn / who has their ults is very useful when it comes to shot calling too :)

  • @garrymoore-eroomyrrag
    @garrymoore-eroomyrrag 7 лет назад +1

    i agree with all of the points you made. also, i think to truly make a "how to be a good player" video, you need to address something about classes. as we all know, each class is so different. a lot of the time it is the assassins who have to make more shotcalling than any other class. most guardians shouldnt be hunting down enemies like an assassin would, for example. guardians serve as good initial tower divers to take the damage so their teammates can fight the enemies within the tower zone.
    either some people are just plain stupid or they really need to be told that a guardian doesnt play the way an assassin does. KNOW YOUR ROLE would be a good headline. people need to start understanding what makes a good assassin vs good mage vs good guardian etc etc

    One thing I always try to do when playing Smite. I try to not find fault in my teammates. When you act like everyone else is to blame, it changes your sort of playstyle to which it doesnt support the team. Of course there is a line to where it is one of your teammates fault, but even then I would just move onto the next match and not worry about it as you will always find a bad teammate

  • @garyfrompokemon3291

    could replace Shot-Calling/Map Awareness with a 4th pillar called "Team Play," or something like that. It would include things like keeping a cool head and being responsible for your own decisions, as well as the extra points.

    I think the big point you missed is attitude. so many times when I'm in coms with people that aren't my usual play group they are always blaming other people or making some excuse. doing that will never help you improve if you go around acting like they are perfect and it's the other players fault why they lost every game

    • @mylittledashie7419
      @mylittledashie7419 7 лет назад +3

    • @DukeSloth

      I was considering to include that, however, you'll notice that there are even some pros that don't have a good attitude. Being nice and optimistic is obviously preferred, but unfortunately not necessary to be good at the game.

    Some people don't play in a team minded frame of mind, sometimes they like to watch other people do most of the damage, sit back and do nothing until that player is dead, and then go in and mop up just to get a good kill score, and sometimes that makes me feel like a trerrible player when in reality i am still an average player.

  • @cmae03
    @cmae03 7 лет назад

    6:38 I see what you mean by that.
    If i play for more than 2-3 hours, I start to die a lot more than I did the previous hour.
    Normally get around 5-10 kills and 1-3 deaths in my average match, but if I play too long, I end up getting equal death and kills, if not more deaths than kills

    As someone that plays lots of games and MOBAs (Smite, LoL, Dota, HotS, HoN, etc).. like you said mechanics is not too important and many skills on many games are not skill shots (unless Smite where you even have to aim your autos). The most important thing is decision making, knowing what to do and when to, when you can gank, when you are going to get ganked, when you are overstaying and such is key.. sure you may know what your opponents skills do but i don't think is a must, for example when I started LoL i didn't know what Katarina did (I was Annie); she threw the knives and teleported and that's all I needed to know. I was careful because I had experience on other MOBAs (I'm not pro in any of those by any means)
    People need to understand when to engage, when to retreteat, and such. Many times I've seen people going on a 1 v 2 with half health.. when they are not fed.. and die

  • @alexallen4311
    @alexallen4311 7 лет назад +1

    My biggest concern with the game is playing a new game mode. I hardly ever play conquest. It's a lot of commitment, at least compared to a joust (where you and 2 friends can just play) or assault (super casual). Because of this, I feel very uncomfortable just jumping into a game of conquest. Even though I'd say mechanically I'm definitely not bad at the game, and in terms of items, abilities, and builds I'm again not bad, jumping into conquest as a joust and assault player is very daunting.

    I think team composition is very important aswell, don't just instalock in a Loki every match, wait to see what your team selects and the fit accordingly, or if u really want to play a certain role the select that role and the god u want to play but don't lock in, wait to see what your teammates select, because one of them may be that guy who insta locks the Loki

    I need to show this to the people who i get stuck in ranked with, when your team kills 4 of the other team, and then chases around the last guy instead of getting a fg or gold fury, then lose because, only 2 members of a team knows how to play objectives. At least watching duke makes me feel better.

    Pretty much the only thing i know about is: Ward placements, counter phasing, have mastered at least I rank in every god, auto canceling, knowing how to play all 5 roles at the minimum decent, (while excelling solo, jungle and adc), predicting enemy movement patterns, when to use team relics, teamfight postion placements, split pushing (if necessary ), maximize my build by adjusting to the enemy gods builds, being efficient of timing on clearing camps, predicting enemy locations, when they're MIA.
    What i don't have: A pc that can run at least 30 fps at the lowest graphical settings.
    While playing at 130-180 ping, it's decent, but i sometimes lose against cc even though in my screen it showed that i activated first the ability.

    Something that I would add just from my experience would be dealing with stress. I was playing Clash yesterday and got matched up with some pro players. I started panicking and played an awful game. :(
    My point probably has a lot more meaning to players who get tilted easily. I know that it's a basic for all games, it's just that some people apparently need to be told.

    I think you missed a point that, at least in my own experience, helped me a lot. Talk to other players. Even better if in voice chat. Debate on wether going for that objective was worth. Argue if crit was really beneficial against that guy's build. "I think he should have gone for Freya there, since she's an adc. However Poseidon was lower". Talk to other people about what happened. Ask them what they think, listen to them and learn from talking to them. Don't be afraid to ask for opinions.

    A question about shotcall
    what if your entire team does NOT call anything and when you do they do NOT follow?
    most of my games ends up like this...everyone playing his own lane like they are doing a different game than yourself never going for any objective, not even if i call it
    if i am the adc, should i try to solo it (like the gold fury, obv with wards down) if no one follows the call or should i leave it at that and don't do it?

    I have a question, and can a ranked player or skilled person please answer... Is an assassin supposed to have more damage than a mage? Or is it even okay for a mage to do little damage? Also wave clear. Is it okay if an assassin has more minion damage than a mage? I'm talking Clash specifically. (Camazotz vs. Scylla)

    • @TheGodNC
      @TheGodNC 7 лет назад

      Also another question... How come in solo queue, a party, or a clan, can never blame their own teammates when it clearly is their fault? I have had this happen to me numerous times and honestly find it hilarious when the leader of the party messages me when they're teammate did worse/the worst. I can only imagine that they had a long talk in the party chat about why they did so bad, and then proceeded to come on to me for no reason.

    I wish if smite will make facilities for voice chat inside smite.
    i know there are external curse application but most time people ignored to use it.
    there are shortcuts like VCC, VCA and many more but in emergency situation player have to act and its difficult situation to use those shortcuts. like there are big shortcut too Ultimate is down or ready. for example if i am Ares or Odin and in my team There zeus, poseidon or scylla. most time happen they don't get that call. if smite will give voice chat we can coordinate any player easily.

    The video is good overall, but I found absolutely nothing that isn't already obvious to me. Still, I guess it's rather that I need to know how to make the game flow in the direction that I want. I find that it's usually just a shitshow and the matches end up lasting for ages, basically becoming a matter of brute force in the end. Also, my team usually has a really fucking hard time pushing lanes and taking down towers. I don't know if that's just a problem with the game or what, but it usually ends up being a situation where the team that goes 5v4 wins, leaving no possibilities for split pushing.
    I find the game to be fun, but I really can't see the appeal for competitive play.
