      @@extantfellow46 of course thats a good thing
      My point is that initially the game has a way of being misleading in its play-style.
      Onion mentions how in the first level of the game it sorta holds the hand of the player in plain sight with things like people pointing where to go in certain areas and how opportunities (those little story missions that sometimes have a unique scene when completed) give someone an incentive to play in a straight line rather than beating someone to death with a fish
      If you’ve never seen this game before and fail to discover the shenanigans and foolishness it hides in plain sight then you’d probably end up thinking Agent 47 was all kills and no thrills. Hell the opening cutscene to the game that features 47 assassinating a multitude of targets gives a serious vibe that makes 47 look like a no nonsense character

      The only way I agree is in the story aspect. Using the first mission of hitman 3 in particular isn't a great example either. Sure they made a mistake in assuming hitman 3 players did play both 1 and 2 of the trilogy which feature the ICA facility as the games start point and is the true "tutorial" of the game.
      In conclusion: A game that allows you to run around in a full clown outfit, knocking out NPCs with a fish, and throwing a one use confetti bomb distraction isn't taking itself too seriously.

    The tutorial is ICA Facility, and people should be starting from Hitman 1, not 3. It’s like starting a TV show from season 5.
    And since it’s World of Assassination now, it’s INCREDIBLY easy to know by starting from the beginning.
    Hitman 3 is meant for players who have played Hitman for a while and already understand the ins and outs of the system, not newcomers. Newcomers start from the Paris or ICA Facility.

      I would be inclined to agree with you, but for starters, Hitman 3 was a fully priced game on launch with a huge marketing push, expecting everyone to have already played the first two games is ignorant. Especially when the main draw is the gameplay, not the story. Along with this, the ICA facility still has all the same problems that I mentioned before in that it still presents itself in a really linear way, possibly even worse than in Hitman 3 as Diana is holding your hand the whole time telling you exactly what to do

      It costs $180 to get the entire World of Assassination series, and even if you want to only get Hitman 3 + the first season to see if you like it (assuming you don't want to play the 5-year-old clearly worse version that is actually Hitman 1) that's still $120. Just like in Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell games, I think it's a matter of the player realizing that once they achieved the highest score for being sneaky, it's time to experiment as you wish and do what you want. IMo, Freelancer helps a lot to showcase just how many options you have to eliminate your targets and complete some side stuff for extra rewards (unless you play in Harcore and even then isn't too uptight).

  • @JeremyCuddles
    @JeremyCuddles 8 месяцев назад +76

    I think they did notice this, cause Freelancer is a bit more free wheeling. I felt so much more freedom doing freelancer stuff than the story stuff. The base game heavily incentivizes stealth. To the point where if I don't do something stealthily, I feel I fucked up. But when I play freelancer, as long as I hit my target and get out. I am successful. And that's a good feeling and opens things up for me in ways the story never did.
    With that said, I don't mind the story based linear stuff. Yes I followed them as a newer player because I just love how silly and funny some can be and just wanted to experience story stuff in my story campaign. But I don't think the game really makes an effort to railroad you into them. We as gamers these days are drawn to on screen markers. It's not up to the game to tell us "hey, these are here to help you if you get stuck or just want to experience the story but you're free to do this however you want." Nowadays, we have freelancer for that creative stuff. The story mode is, well, for the story.

    I can only imagine trying to change the movement in the game would lead to worse results whether it would be through bugs or getting stuck. It happens a lot in games with a more “Free” movement system.
    The “tutorial” for Dubai is mostly for old hitman players to get back into the game and introduce them to the new camera function whilst impressing them with visuals. The actual tutorial would be in the ICA facility, a design flaw on their part I suppose.
    I think the more linear feeling actually helps with introducing newer players without overstimulating. It allows them to ride along with the assassinations until they realize they can create a unique way to play. (This is how my play through went.)
    Overall I disagree with your stance and think most of the changes you suggested should not be implemented, but your points are still valid (even on a subjective level).

      I think one real easy fix is to allow the player to bring in some of the show comedic elements, like the rubber duck. Just imagine going through a super serious story, and then in the loadout section the first thing you see is the rubber duck, even if locked. That imo would be the perfect way to show even if players don't find it funny. Maybe even have one in the dubai mission and have diana or gray mention something if you pick it up. Somewhere easy to get to and most players would notice it.

    I think it's kind of disingenuous to talk about the scoring system like it's telling players they're doing bad when they don't play stealthily, because the scoring system is based off the whole point of the game- but it's not *necessary*. You absolutely can ignore the scoring system and play the game however you would like, and in fact like you said, some story missions are based in things that give you a technically worse score! Agent 47 is a spy assassin, he is the shadow that takes out his targets with pinpoint accuracy and precision. The scoring system *needs* to be based off not only this idea for the benefit of context and such, but for also the sheer fact that we have this long history of Hitman games that were all based in being the best spy assassin you could be. Honestly, the WOA trilogy being so open and giving you SO MANY options to play out the missions is quite incredible, and really demonstrates to me that IOI is a leader in making stealth games that also allow you to do almost anything you want to do.
    At the end of the day, this is all opinions, and everyone can feel as they may. I just feel that telling a stealth game that its fatal flaw is that it... bases itself off being a stealth game just feels weird as hell.

    @Soomeone.35 7 месяцев назад +9

    I understand what you are trying to say, and of course these are all opinions. But I don’t think your argument holds water
    1. Dubai isnt “the” tutorial. ICA training facility is. Its in the name. I would agree that the game shoudl point to it better, as it is in the prologue, but this brings me to the second point
    2. Do you start reading a book series from the third book? Oh, there is prologue and hitman 1 and 2 I wonder what they could be. Me personally started with the second game, and still played the training facility before. I didn’t bought it, it was on ps plus at the time.
    3. Of course killing innocent people will afect your score negatively. This isn’t a murder everyone simulation (although kill everyone challenges are really fun.) It still is a stealth game. Yes, it values sandbox experiences but at its core it is still a stealth game. You wouldn’t be a good assasin if you were always spoted.
    4. Me, personally I never thought that they valued the story a lot. But they overcomplicated it, i do agree
    5. I also was sometimes mildly annoyed that 47 could go over certain things that should be possible, but its just isn’t the game. The mouvement isn’t (and shouldn’t be) complicated. Not every game should have wall climb, wall run mechanics. Go play assasins creed or ghostrunner or something. Call of duty tried that, and was criticised because it wasn’t the game for those mechanics.
    6. I also never thought that the game was taking itself way to much seriously, but it might be a mistake on my part

      Um, excuse me, CoD movements were AWESOME once they've introduced better climbing/"parkour" mechanics!
      Also, you talk like this was an artistic choice for Hitman to prevent us from moving logically. It was not. The inability to go past any fence is a technical limitation, not a deliberate choice. I'd even call it a bug.
      On a side note, I also don't like how we can't sprint in those games... Like, you kill somebody, everyone around you starts shooting but 47 just jogs, lol. There really was an issue with how they implemented normal motion in Hitman.

  • @justjames4
    @justjames4 4 дня назад +1

    I agree that the creativity in the gameplay should be emphasized in the story more, but at the same time, Agent 47 has been established in the story as a perfectly silent assassin for a long time, and the story suddenly discarding this would feel weird.

  • @Marc_02
    @Marc_02 4 месяца назад +2

    As some have already stated here in the comments, the ICA Facility is what should really be considered the tutorial for the entire Hitman WoA (especially since it is one game now). Obviously, all the basic game mechanics are introduced first, but after that I think the freeform training actually did a pretty good job at introducing the sandbox aspect of the game.
    Sure, it is still the goal to get a Silent Assassin rating, but that is honestly just the way the game is supposed to be played (outside of freelancer) and it still leaves the player with a tremendous amount of freedom. You can actually do almost anything SA if you really want to. The Hippo challenge with all three targets on Santa Fortuna for example: I did that SA, but you don't have to in order to complete the challenge. There are really no repercussions at all, if you don't get SA. It's just something that you can go for, if you want to challenge yourself a bit more. Same thing with SA/SO. Also, if you mess up, there is still the saving/loading mechanic in the main missions.
    The thing with the cutscenes is, that they are obviously just meant to show the canonical story of the game, which is for Agent 47 to complete every mission undetected, because the story just wouldn't work out otherwise. As far as I'm concerned, that is also how it should be, because that's just who 47 is as a character. You can of course make him do some goofy stuff as the player, but 47 as a character is just meant to be the perfect assassin who completes everything SA. There are challenges and freelancer for example to show the player other ways to play, but the cutscenes somehow encouraging that would just be wrong, because it doesn't fit the story or 47 in the slightest.
    All in all, I think most players who are actually interested in the game will find their way to play which gives them the most fun experience. Someone who really enjoys the game will not just play through the story once but find some map he wants to explore and complete more than just the main objective on. And once you start trying to complete some challenges, you will automatically start to realize how much freedom the game offers.

    I think the tonal disconnect between the super serious story and the goofy gameplay is one of Hitman's greatest strengths. You start to realize this if you play the mission stories. In Paris, the first level, isn't it awfully convenient (and funny) that one of the world's top supermodels just happens to look exactly like Agent 47? Or in Thailand, watching 47 go ham on the drums with a completely blank expression is hilarious. Not to mention all the murder puns 47 makes throughout the game.
    Unless you're going for Silent Assassin, you can goof around however you want without fear. I mean, who honestly cares about the score anyway? And even if you do, you don't need to go for a high score every time.

  • @ForgedinPrint
    @ForgedinPrint 8 месяцев назад +5

    To me, this seems like the original hitman wanted to initially be a serious story, but at some point (whether in development or just seeing players screw around) they decided to embrace it. They still want to use the "serious" thing for the story but have it juxtaposed with the gameplay.
    It could be done a lot better sure but I feel, at least based on what I had seen (watched a lot of hitman content but don't have the game myself) I feel like this is what they were aiming for. One change that might make it much more obvious it's fine to not is in the tutorial hand them a ton of those explosive ducks to work with right off the bat. Even if the player doesn't find it funny I think it'd give them an idea that it's not always serious.
    Another change they could do is maybe instead of a point based system a "professional vs chaotic" type system. It would show the player that hey, killing everyone is not a bad thing in this particular series while still giving the player a reason to go "professional".

    The disconnect between the silent assassin style presentation and the over-the-top gameplay was definitely weird. But I don't call it a flaw, honestly. It's not hard to understand that you are indeed free to kill however you want.
    Also, most people don't start with Hitman 3, especially now that it's been merged with the other games. Anyone starting these games would be introduced with the boat mission simulation from the first game. It's made of 3 times the same mission: one where you are forced to follow orders, then one where the game explicitly tells you that you are free, then a third linear mission (but the game still showed you that you were free to kill however you want, that still counts).
    So it's not a problem, really. The real fatal flaw, in my opinion, is the lack of budget in Hitman 2. Not only do cutscenes go from the outstanding cinema level to stupid stills, even the maps feel rushed.
    Take the first mission for example (the beach). They make you start miles from the house, then they make you thoroughly inspect that house. You see all the hiding spots, all the tools, and you KNOW there will be a fight.
    .... But then the bad guys barge in, you kill your target, and then you can literally just avoid them by getting out from the balcony! Why bother making the house a complete battlefield when any sensible player would look for an exit from the balcony and find it?
    And it's not the only problematic map.
    Adding other objectives aside than killing is great, but the way they implemented them was sooo boring. The Maelstrom, for example : you have to identify him before killing him. Awesome! But in order to do so? You just look at random NPCs until you find him. Boriiing!
    All those issues stem from the lack of budget, due to Square Enix fucking over IO Interactive. I can't imagine what these games would be like if they had the proper budget...

    I recently played the Hitman 3 demo because I didn't own the game yet, and I was performance testing, and while the limited map space and directions definitely go with your point of not allowing freedom all to much, there were moments here and there that made me figure things out on my own which has someone who already played lots of hitman in the past was easy, but I also think it's just obvious enough for a new player to figure it out, just a little thing I was thinking of

    You've missed the point. There are silent assassin ways to do a mission. If anything those are canon Yet there are all these over the top creative challenges that we can do for bonus weapons and so forth to keep the game fun. For example the scare crow challenges in the Colorado map or the challenge in Japan involving a baseball bat and the kill bill outfit. Neither can be done silent assassin.
    I do agree the game should be $20 to $30, worst case scenario DLC. Thankfully the trilogy can be bought and treated as a full release

    I agree, but would say that I think the game's comedy is subtle, and that delicate tone is maintained by presenting itself as a super-serious spy thriller in contrast to the goofiness. I wouldn't want them to try and match the tone of the cutscenes with that of the gameplay, because the joke is not between the game's characters, it's between the game itself, and the player.
    If they ditched the cinematic melodrama in favor of dark comedy in the cutscenes, then it would drag the contradictory tone of the gameplay into the light of day, where it becomes less charming, and more distracting. The audience would be forced to ask (why) a pasty-white, wax-bald statue of a man with a barcode tattoo on the back of his head is able to blend in as a street vendor in Mumbai.
    By keeping dissonance in tone between the story the game is telling, and the story that you play out with 47, the underlying joke stays underlying, and avoids becoming overdone. Part of what makes Hitman so fun to engage with in a silly tone through memes or wacky gameplay, is the juxtaposition between the grim tone, and 47's disconnected, almost serendipitous interactions with the world.

    I’m sorry, but this is a poor excuse for a video essay and seems like nothing more than a desperate attempt for clicks.
    As other comments have pointed out, you conveniently leave out that Dubai is not the first mission for new players. The ICA facility is, which basically straight up tells you that you can do whatever you want. Also, notice that big #3 right next to Hitman. Pretty sure most people playing it will have experience with previous games because of that.
    Your argument essentially boils down to the game sacrificing its identity for the sake of creativity. While Hitman is supposed to offer plenty of freedom, it is still first and foremost a stealth game. Its AI, its map design, and its core gameplay are all built around stealth; it’s literally a game where you’re playing as a Hitman and, contrary to what movies like John Wick show, that does not mean going in guns blazing and being a one-man army.
    You also seem to think that the serious attitude of the story somehow holds back the gameplay. If anything, it enhances it for both new and old players. New players can be immersed in the world and old players can catch up on the juicy lore. Also, ever since the first game in the early 2000s, Hitman has had an incredibly serious and often grisly story. Like stealth, it’s a part of the series’ identity. And again, the tutorial makes it clear that you don’t have to be the same 47 in the cutscene and can instead throw rubber duckies at everyone.
    Mission stories help new players get familiar with the mechanics and general gameplay. You seem to think you’re speaking on behalf of new players, but new players won’t know how the AI works, what they can get away with, and what the basic strategies are for completing the mission. Plus, they’re how players can see the most iconic and over the top kills, which is likely one of the main reasons someone bought the game in the first place. You also conveniently leave out that mission stories can be turned off entirely anytime.
    The pinned comment here also reflects your willful ignorance of the connection, or disconnection, as decided entirely by the player, between cutscene and gameplay. You can slap Mafia bosses to death with a fish while dressed as a clown, for Pete’s sake.
    The video title is also somewhat clickbait. If this were a “flaw,” let alone a “fatal” one, how has Hitman 3 been able to become both a commercial and qualitative success? By your logic, or lack thereof, wouldn’t new players have been turned away?
    In conclusion, this is not a video essay. This is a poor excuse for an argument that consists almost entirely of conveniently left out yet highly significant information, clouded all or nothing logical fallacies, a complete ignorance of the series’ history and disregard for its identity, and a pride in oneself so inflated that you think you speak for new players.
    This is nothing more than a desperate attempt for clicks.

    Honestly i think you have good points but a new hitman player should buy the trilogy and start from the beginning for the story and game play to make sence as well the game is now a trilogy now and costs £30 pounds for 20 plus maps compare to 3 games on different disks with separate maps, plus the dlc doest cost 70 dollars for 3 maps it costs like 30 for all the dlc you would want if you enjoyed the game which adds many more versions of pre existing maps aswell as adding 2 new ones in new york and haven island plus the two sniping maps which are also fun to play from time to time.
    IO probably wont make another hitman game for a long time anyway so they probably won't charge anymore for dlc as they focus on adding more challenges, items, suits and ilusive targets to the game for free monthly.
    So in my opinion i think your review is flawed as hitman 3 isnt how a new player should be introduced to the game it should be the ica training tests.

    Hitman is definitely a stealth game at its core. How do I know that? You must play the original Hitman games to realize this; Silent Assassin and Contracts will tell you whether you were stealthy or not at the end of a mission. Stealth by definition means: a cautious, unobtrusive, and secretive way of moving or proceeding intended to avoid detection. Source was from merriam-webster.
    People believe that using shadow or hiding in corners in video games automatically means stealth. They forget that there is another way to stealth as well. 47 uses disguises to avoid getting caught. The enemies see him, but they believe he is an ally therefore 47 is allowed to go anywhere. Simple as that. That's the kind of stealth IO Interactive uses in their Hitman games. As a result, players can get creative with their speedrun of the hitman games.

    I will go one step further: Dubai is a TERRIBLE introductory level to a Hitman game. Its verticality makes the progression through it necessarily quite linear and at the same time disorienting. It is too complex without making up for it by being immediately interesting.
    Hawkes bay probably swung the other way, but at least you're in and out of that quick to afterwards immediately be dropped into Miami.
    Paris of course by design is practically perfect. It had to be, as it was all people could play for like a month.
    I don't think Hitman 3 necessarily has a better 'first level' available to it. Each of them has a gimmick or two that can only be appreciated in their deviation from the norm. Mendoza is probably the exception and could if polished a bit more be a Paris for Hitman 3 - but that would require changing the story a fair bit.

So, I had a plan, I would get familiar with all the maps so I could get better nd then I got Hitman 3, and I was a master and unlocked all the things I wanted to use in Hitman, Snipers, Explosive ducks. And I used to hate hokkaido and paris as I found them difficult, but after playing for so long I can master them with ease and really like playing them. [ok ive typed too much. point is, practice your favourite maps to improve skill]

    damn, exactly! I forgot how I get to try it, but I got really bored and quit the game after I done the assassin on the "kill the old lady in the mansion" , it is fine but... so linear, and even it is linear, the story is so bland that it feels like the game want me to focus on something else (which I never know before I watched these crazy videos online)
    Will I go back to the game? probably no after the bad taste it left me, but will I keep on watching video like yours? hell yeah :D

      @@extantfellow46 Made the same mistake with Hitman one. I absolutely hate Paris and quit the game for a few months after this level. I then simply skipped it, instead of forcing myself to play the story as it is recommended. Now I've finished every level and absolutely love hitman. I'm happy that i didn't give up. I still hate Paris tho
