Thank you so much! This video had helped me tremendously after watching numerous ones , yours is the only one that actually told me to have my stitch length at ZERO!! OMG! YOUR AMAZING!! THANK YOU❤️❤️❤️
I have really appreciated your quilting videos. They are clear and detailed, not so brief as to confuse :) Looking forward to one covering edging or binding the quilt :) Thank you!
I have been a quilter for most of my life but always hand quilted or sent them out. Recently I got a Viking 18" long arm table top machine! Wow, what fun but the learning curve is there for sure. I am loving your videos. Thanks
I’ve been watching your videos, very useful until now but today, you didn’t show the finished product how it came out front and back to have an idea. Thank you
That quilt hanging on your wall is one I'm currently doing. It's from Amy's 2012 block of the month. So much fun. I am enjoying watching your video and learning how to free motion quilt as a beginner. Looking forward to watching more!
ok so once you bring the threads up and are ready to stich... start stitching and then back stich one or two stitches... then you can continue with your free motion and trim those threads so they don't get stuck. Does that make sense? Hope that helps!
Hi Melanie, what a lovely video... Yes, I do get dis-heartened when things don't go the way I planned it - but you have made me feel better about that. Very encouraging words to a beginner - who Is not young! ... ;)
wow really looks so easy but hard at the same time... im going to try this and I think I may get hooked... quilts are forever.... dresses are grown out of... so I just move it? it seems tricky.
Thank you for all the learning tutorials, I am new to quilt making and you have helped me a lot. Thanks for telling us, don't stress & worry, I have felt defeated a few times with my first quilt. What causes the thread to bird nest underneath when using a darning foot to quilt? I know, you make this look easy, and practice will help, but I am all knotted up after sewing a little on my practice quilt and fear "what to do if it happens on my first quilt?". I did bring up the bobbin thread and trim the thread off at the beginning. Thanks, stay sweet.
Hi there I had this issue too, it's usually the top thread not being threaded correctly. It's also your speed you are probably going too slow like I was. On,y do a hands worth at a time too. Foot pedal is fast and hand slow but not too slow I have to practice lots
I learn better by watching, so a class at a local quilt shop or Joanns etc would be a great way to learn more skills. Also, Craftsy dot com has awesome online sewing videos. Most you pay for, but the quilting Block of the Month is a free class that is really good.
Wow, this was great. I've always loved the whimsical qualities of a free motion quilt, but I've never seen how its done, so thanks for posting this. I had no idea that the free in "free motion" was so literal... as in, go anywhere, swerve over this way, and zing around that way, with a loop-dee-loop out yonder! How fun! You're a good teacher. Thanks for going over all the details. Now, I can go get me a new foot and some glovies. :)
loved your video. I too sometimes feel out of place being young and being all crafty with sewing and such but I love it! Your video was very helpful! I just bought my darning foot for my machine and going to try machine quilting for the first time. I got tired of paying someone else to do it for me. Thanks for the tips. I didn't know about the gloves before. So I'll have to break out a pair.
Hope you don't mind me mentioning, but if you can't drop your feed dogs down (as I can't with my Toyota Jeans RS2000) you can buy a darning plate. I got mine off ebay and it just clips on and pops off. Love your tutorials Melanie. I watch them a lot. This one is helping me get started on FMQ as I'm a total beginner. Thank you x
I have never tried to use one but sounds like it would! As long as those feed dogs are covered up so you can freely move you quilt you are good to go ;) Try it on a tester first .
I know sometimes I feel a little funny about being so young and really loving sewing and crochet haha! Oh well!! Oh yeah Missouri Star is great and Crafty Gemini is good too. Rock n roll, that's good lol!!
Melanie, you have helped me start crocheting again. When I first started with a book, it was a disappointment. But with your easy tutorials I'm doing great.
Great video! I've been trying to learn this for some time. Last night I started playing with my scraps and fmq. I'm almost done with a quilt and have reserved a strip down the center and I'd love to try. Would you consider doing a series on learning this? You are super easy to understand and ur explanations are wonderful and thorough. Tag me if you do! Thanks!!!
Thanks so much, and yes!! that makes complete sense. I really appreciate your help and pray you have a lovely Thursday!! I will be free-motion quilting all day!! :)
Thank You.. I just bought mine off Ebay.. I'm going to try and do my Granddaughter's quilt.. P.S You're beautiful.. :) Have a great day and keep sharing. Please.
Thanks for the details...stitch length to zero, a darning foot (which I have) AND to lower the feed dogs. I wish we could have seen your working your quilt up close, but I got the idea.
I used to be that 8 year old sitting by the pool with my knitting. I know how you feel! Most people just stare bewildered, or they just "don't have time" to spend on such projects. Truth is, neither do I. hehe
great questions! I start in the top right corner and quilt the entire top right quarter of the quilt and then work my way down to the bottom right quarter. Then I turn and keep going around.
I'm a beginner and I been watching all your videos on quilting and my question is do I need to have the darning plate when making a quilt or no. I loved the way you made the kitty quilt and wanna do it that way. Thank you
Hi Melanie! Could you explain what to do with the top and bobbin threads you pulled up at the beginning Hi Melanie! Could you explain what to do with the top and bobbin threads that you pulled up at the beginning? Thanks so much and I love your videos and blog! I am always excited when you post new ones!! //
When you are FMQ and need to stop because of running out of bobbin or thread in general, does one have to back stitch when stopping in order to lock the stitch in and do you back stitch when you start to secure it?
I subscribed right away! I am soo glad I found you! :-D I thought I was weird - young and sewing :-) I have done a few quilts and quilting / sewing project in the last year. Love the Missouri Star Quilt Company and watch the crafty gemini sometimes. I live in Germany and got the rulers etc. in cm so Im struggeling with the inspirations in the internet as most of them are using inches. I guess I need inch-material 2 Conc. free motion quilting: If an area isnt perfect, I call it "rock´n´roll" :-D
Hi Melanie, I have been quilting a little bit mostly baby.... and just a stitch in the ditch... most of the quilts that have done is minky on the back and i was wondering if you have done much if you have any tips that might help me out a little bit?
Your video is very informative! Thank you! I am curious how you found your FMQ foot? I have an Emerald 118, but I can't seem to figure out how to search for a foot to fit my machine. Any help??
I have a Janome sewing machine that uses snap on presser feet, however I can't find any quilting presser feet, such as the walking foot or the darning free motion presser foot that you are using in the video, for use on the snap on foot sewing machine. Do you know of any? Thank you for any pointers you can give me! :-)
gabbyg561 I know it’s been 5 years later but I just now found this video. I too have a Janome and what I purchased for under $8 on Amazon was the 3pcs Large Metal Darning/Free Motion Sewing Machine Presser Foot for All Low Shank Brother Singer Babylock Janome and More Sewing Machines - Include Close Toe, Open Toe and Quilting Foot once you have that all you need to do is take your screw driver that came with your machine and remove the ankle and screw in one of these to be able to free motion quilt. It’s that simple 😉
Hi Melanie, Hope you dont mind but ive put a link to your video onto my eBay listing for a free motion quilting foot as people are asking me how to use the foot. Regards Ian
In all the "How To Machine Quilt" videos, I have yet to see one that explains just HOW to adjust your bobbin tension/thread tension to be sure it's right for Free Motion Quilting... I just keep hearing, "Make sure that your tension is correct..." Can you please explain how to adjust both the bobbin and the thread tension?? As in, "How To Free Motion Quilt For Dummies"?? Thanks!!!
I'm still practicing and trying to get the hang of it but I bought a pair of, what I thought were overpriced quilting gloves and also picked me up a pair of gardening gloves from Family Dollar. With all my practicing I have been doing I have found that definitely the garden gloves work better so I took the quilting gloves back for a refund.
What are your machine settings? I assume you're not putting presser foot down.... what special presser foot do you use? How can you go backward when cloth pushed forward from below? These seem to be the important questions, but it's assumed we already know. Yet you call this a tutorial. Also..... what pattern are you putting down? Do some work better than others? The issues you cover are obvious ones. The issues specific to this kind of sewing are not addressed.
+Pamela Rice Anne is correct. I am new to FMQ and quilting in general and I have learned it pays to spend time watching "several" tutorials to make sure I "get it" before I start working because everyone explains things differently and they will also emphasize different things. For example I had to watch about 4 different FMQ tutorials to find one where they specifically mention what # their top tension setting is at. Everyone else just says to play with it until it works.
Nice. Makes it look less intimidating. However bit too much talking & being fussy. And it would have been nice to see what it was you did. Other than the simple instructions & wearing gloves, I didnt see anything else. Close up of the stitching would have been amazing. Thanks.
Thank you so much! This video had helped me tremendously after watching numerous ones , yours is the only one that actually told me to have my stitch length at ZERO!! OMG! YOUR AMAZING!! THANK YOU❤️❤️❤️
You gave more instruction on different things than I’ve seen others give. Thank you

I bought one of those and it worked like a charm on my old (1997 Brother) machine.
I know sometimes I feel a little funny about being so young and really loving sewing and crochet haha! Oh well!! Oh yeah Missouri Star is great and Crafty Gemini is good too. Rock n roll, that's good lol!!
Girl same! I'm 26 and I love to crochet and sew and cook and my husband calls me a grandma. But he says it's a complement. So I'll take it!
Melanie, you have helped me start crocheting again. When I first started with a book, it was a disappointment. But with your easy tutorials I'm doing great.

This is awesome .. Thank you for sharing!! I have been looking for a great video and I have finally found it.

As a beginner do you recommend any literature on stitching and quilting, do u recommend taking classes?
Are you using a husky emerald? What foot do you have?
Your video is very informative! Thank you! I am curious how you found your FMQ foot? I have an Emerald 118, but I can't seem to figure out how to search for a foot to fit my machine. Any help??

thank you so much for your tutorial....very helpful
What size needle and thread do you recommend for free motion quilting? Thank you
Jacqueline Garvin I recommend a good quality 100% cotton thread like auriful or superior threads and I usually use a 90/14 needle or the 80/12.
What glove do you use?
Hi Melanie,
Hope you dont mind but ive put a link to your video onto my eBay listing for a free motion quilting foot as people are asking me how to use the foot.
Regards Ian
Sorry to ask it again, since you have mentioned it already, what kind of needle do I use for this? Thank you
msnurse2003 I usually use a 90/14 universal needle.
Thank you
So helpful, thanks!!!
Should I use a walking foot to go around all kinds of shapes OR just a regular foot? I want to go around Animal Shapes & sizes....thank you!
does the batting drag or tear apart when sewing? how do you stop that from happening?
Terry Pavon use your pins to hold the rest of the quilt in place

Best Regards Ian
Very helpful--Thanks
Thank you..
thank u this is very helpful :)
It would have been nice to see exactly what you were quilting (close of the stitches).
totally agree, not clue what she is doing. Show what you are doing , how you are meandering....
I’ll miss you forever
Wish I could've seen the end results you did.
I have heard that those loose threads get threaded through a sewing needle, and then hand sewn into the back of the quilt so they are hidden.
Good instruction, no visuals. Redo with black thread on white ground or the reverse
I miss you, Melanie 💔
thx i lernt alott and im going to use thuis in my genuse hour in school

Sorry about the half duplicate...
You might want to check your manual. You missed the last hook on your machine for threading, right before the threading into the needle.
Yes, It doesn't make any difference in my stitches either way, but you are right!
omg Linda R..... really???
What, Eva?
Nice. Makes it look less intimidating. However bit too much talking & being fussy. And it would have been nice to see what it was you did. Other than the simple instructions & wearing gloves, I didnt see anything else. Close up of the stitching would have been amazing. Thanks.

Melanie Ham Thank you..
Jenny why dont you back stitch...... I watch all of your videos and I never see you back stitch. thanks
with glove,s she wants to safe and she very careful my name is heather ha
It's too bad you weren't able to zoom in on the stitches you were creating. I actually thought this video was a waste of my time.
zeus4honey Well aren't you just a charm...
thank u this is very helpful :)
