I needed this for Illinois' extortion roa-- I mean, toll roads! :)
This may work for surveillance cameras but, not traffic cameras. Tags have a chip that is read by the cameras. I verified this when I drove in an express lane with temporary new car tag and got a bill in the mail. It's the same technology police cars have to scan for expired tags, warrants, stolen car, etc.
With police now on the lookout for these, one would need a really sneakily-designed visual 'stealth' one to get away with it. If it only covers part of the plate (i.e., the lettering segment), then shading/color contrast with the rest of the plate will give it away, as would any visual lettering distortion from looking at the plate at a ground-level side angle. And at night, there would need to be no unusual extra reflectivity from headlights behind one's vehicle.
I assume that the only way to get caught with this, is if you're minding in your own business and a cop stops behind you at traffic lights and notices this. Otherwise, how will a cop know?

If your car has the physical space around the area your tags are mounted, you might be able to make a motorized version of it that moves into place as you approach a toll gate. Then retracts itself after you've cleared the gate. But you didn't hear that from me 🤫 ;)

When I worked as a motor officer in California, Steve Jobs (Apple) would drive his Mercedes two door roadster around without the plate. It was just a fix it ticket anyway, and he didn't want people knowing his license plate. You could always go that route.
Doing so in Spain and getting catched by a traffic cop (who could easily notice just by looking at the plate and moving a bit around) means a 6,000€ ticket, 6 license points (out of a maximum possible 15 points) and car impounding for illegal license plate alteration. Not a very good advice here.

Maybe a cutout of it the size of your plate and have a similar setup with the flip plate wire relay etc but instead this slides over your existing plate and can maybe be held on by some strong neodymium magnets to withstand the wind draft then of course the string or whatever you want to use for the pulling action probably some thin metal wire
We have red light cameras but they are wise to this - the camera that takes your tag pic is positioned so you are straight ahead of it instead of at the steep angle you showed. You know someone is nabbed when you see the flash go off. I'm surprised they don't use speed vans around here.
There's this super-reflective spray-on stuff that is completely clear until it's hit with direct light, such as sunlight or a camera flash. You can also turn on your headlights and let your license plate lights shine on it.
@@trinitytigner I'm not sure. I have seen online somewhere. It comes in a spray can. I have driven behind someone that had it on their plate. When not in direct light you can see the number clear as day, but as soon as light hits it, you can't see a thing.

In some states, anything over your plate including a clear cover will get you a ticket. And when the officer sees what you have your car is impounded. Just walking by your car a cop will see it.. so your cost can be over a thousand dollars.

I have seen camera blocking filters on the license plate. In the area where I live, if stopped by police and there is any type of lens or window on the plate the fine is $280 for the first offense. If not removed within 24 hours and stopped again the fine will be double. The third time the fine is doubled again! After some time the vehicle will be towed and held till all the fines are paid.
If stopped by police. The emphasis on IF. I haven't been stopped by the cops in ~10 years and I drive approximately 2500 miles a month - most of it on a highway at 80-90 mph, if possible.
Got pulled over late at night in Western New York as a DWI test and his excuse for pulling me over was because I had a clear cover protecting my vanity plate. Was told just a clear cover is illegal in NY.
To the point of how to make it better add explosive bolts to the license plate holder so that you can release it if you're going to get pulled over by the police just for testing purposes.
Wait so dumb question lol. With the naked eye you would be able to see it normal as if noting were there? And also how would this do at night with headlights? Would it bounce back and look kinda funny or all normal?
What about a hinge hidden behind the plate at the bottom and a hidden pull cable like off a bicycle brake going to the drivers position. Pull when required then return. Plate flips down, can't be read. Then flip it back.
If the stripes would be horizontal it wouldn’t be visible from straight angle either You can actually make yourself invisible to security cam by wearing some sort of pattern shirt, too !
I know this video is a couple years old, but as someone who runs their own ALPR license plate camera... you might prevent the *entire* plate from being visible, which would stop me from getting the entire plate, but believe me... if the police can identify the make/model of the car and have even a partial plate, they can find ya. Also keep in mind, with a fresnel lens, you can't see the entire tag number up high at close proximity, but I'm shooting tags at 130 feet away from the camera at a place where you have to either turn left or right, and there's a good 35 feet of focus. At that distance, the camera isn't elevated that far above. Also, it does still capture with an Ai reader, but if Ai fails to snag the tag, I can go back through frame by frame at 30fps and review. Also-- no, I'm not doing anything bad with this data, and it is completely legal for me to do this here. Two years ago some dirt bag was driving around my neighborhood (fairly nice, crime free area) stealing peoples halloween and Christmas decorations. Haven't had any incidents since I put up the plate cam, thankfully, but in the future.. don't come in my neighborhood doing dumb stuff.
May be put the lense in peices so deflect I on is up down instead side to side. Updown would block cameras from higher up and not be noticable at same level right and left when in another vehicle
This is called electrochromatic glass. This is the only option that is both stealthy enough to avoid detection when not in use, and absolutely effective. The downside (other than it still being a cover) is $$$$$!
almost every speed camera these days have this factored in how the cameras are positioned. they no longer place cameras at an acute angle to capture plates, sometimes the distance can be almost 200 feet before they snap the picture. this puts the plate more square to the camera nullifying the Fresnel effect. might as well put a big smiley face next to your plate, at least someone at traffic control may get a chuckle before they process your fine.
yeah, when he sees it. Emphasis on when. There are not infinite number of cops out there, you do realize that, don't you? There are more of us than there are them.
Yep. There is obstructed license plate ticket (accidentally got dirt or mud on it) and then a more serious more expensive ticket when someone intentionally obstructs the view of the plate to avoid cameras. Maybe it is better to not drive reckless, stop at right lights and pay your tolls. I hate tolls but it is what it is.
Remember that a cop will usually approach your car from the left side. In the daytime it will be apparent that something is distorting the license place.
Any kind of license plate cover in California will get you a citation for defective equipment. Usually $75 fine and then you need to go to a police station to show that the defective equipment (license plate cover) has been removed and corrected.
"But remember, don't actually drive around with one of these on your car." BWAHAHAHA! Sounds like a pharmaceutical ad on TV saying "Don't take Wegovy if you are allergic to any of the ingredients." I love it.
Altering your licence plate is very illegal in most if not all jurisdictions. Although temporary, this method will amount to the same prosecution and penalties as any other kind of plate manipulation. The best way to avoid prosecution and heavy fines is to drive safely and legally. Driving is a privilege not a right.
2 layers of Fresnel lens may block it better. Most modern TV's use a Fresnel lens. Never thought to use it for a purpose like this but I had a 60" Fresnel lens I threw out a couple years ago. Who knew.
What happens if you get into a hit and run accident with someone else that has a blocker? Surely you’d want to know their plate number before they sped off? Good luck with that! That’s my main issue with these things. Sure tolls suck, but there are other factors to consider.
Several states prohibit any type of cover between the plate and open air. Even if it is absolutely clear. So, have a nice ticket if you do it. And of course, you provide Probable Cause to be pulled over.
My brother n law has been riding around without plates for decades. When he gets pulled over he just apologizes, says it fell off and just purchased new screws last week. Usually the cop just makes him put the plate on right then & there. He gets a new vehicle every few years so it’s unlikely the same cop will stop him in the same vehicle. Selling point…. Have a new unopened bag of the mounting hardware in the vehicle. Install plate 👍
Even if it blocks the camera from taking a photo of the license plate, but still takes a photo of the windshield with the registration and inspection 🧐, so what’s the use of having this plastic blocking the cameras.
Here in Alberta people simply use rear mounted bicycle hangers to obliterate the license plate and seem to get away with it, and the stupid thing is that in Alberta only one rear plate is required!
hit send before i finished. the thing about digital cameras is they have a serious problem, they see infrared and ultraviolet where film cameras dont without special filters to do so. what a person needs to do is blind the camera. it takes some engineering but if you can incorporate a very strong emitter that can broadcast a strong infrared signal, this is what the camera will see, a bright flash thats invisible to the naked eye but a warning, it will be visible to a patrol cars dash cam which will likely get you pulled over if noticed.
I’ll just do what my neighbor, and others, have done. Drive around with temporary plates for a year, never bothering to get the car registered. It’s amazing how many I see every day, I guess that’s not a priority for the local police department to enforce.
What happens when a cop comes up from behind at night and the headlights reflect off the plastic? Won’t they just see something isn’t right and pull u over?

That’s a great idea. Your car looks awesome with the thrusters. Dare I say your a Star Wars fan!
I find it a lot easier to take the license plate off for when it’s required

Maybe a cutout of it the size of your plate and have a similar setup with the flip plate wire relay etc but instead this slides over your existing plate and can maybe be held on by some strong neodymium magnets to withstand the wind draft then of course the string or whatever you want to use for the pulling action probably some thin metal wire

We have red light cameras but they are wise to this - the camera that takes your tag pic is positioned so you are straight ahead of it instead of at the steep angle you showed. You know someone is nabbed when you see the flash go off. I'm surprised they don't use speed vans around here.
I heard Clear Grip Tape for skateboards actually works for license plates. Maybe you could test that theory out next?
it doesn't work. i tried it and still got a school zone camera ticket
There's this super-reflective spray-on stuff that is completely clear until it's hit with direct light, such as sunlight or a camera flash. You can also turn on your headlights and let your license plate lights shine on it.
where do i get it from?
@@trinitytigner I'm not sure. I have seen online somewhere. It comes in a spray can. I have driven behind someone that had it on their plate. When not in direct light you can see the number clear as day, but as soon as light hits it, you can't see a thing.
@@trinitytigner rust-oleum reflective spray
That would be noticeable to cars with lights behind you and draw attention.
@@rickolfano39 I don't the average Joe really cares, or even more likely think it's pretty cool. I can see maybe a cop getting behind you at night might be interested, but these days, unless you're doing something blatantly stupid in front of them, they probably don't care either.
In some states, anything over your plate including a clear cover will get you a ticket. And when the officer sees what you have your car is impounded. Just walking by your car a cop will see it.. so your cost can be over a thousand dollars.
Speed scams are liers because they give speeding tickets to people that's not truly speeding, the trickery is setting the speed limit to low for the road.
Greed, Corruption!
I'm all for beating these speed cameras theoretically. it's not fair to collect revenue when a state employee isn't even there. also, there are some shenanigans the transportation department is trying to pull that I think should be countered in the most civilly disobedient manner possible... in theory of course

An array of infra-red LED's also works.

Could you provide a link to the eBay listing where you purchased the Fresnel lens pieces you showed in your video?
I can’t even figure how to take off the plastic cover on my license plate lol, this is dope.
FYI, such frames are illegal in North Carolina.
I think that the plate number can be read , especially by those who operate those cameras, especially with today's technology
LMAO. that would be a great video
Hahaha that's awesome! You need to patent that idea and then sell me your first set..... but only after they've been tested! 😂
@@MakeItHackindid you do it?
Wait so dumb question lol. With the naked eye you would be able to see it normal as if noting were there? And also how would this do at night with headlights? Would it bounce back and look kinda funny or all normal?
I feel like if you get pulled over and a cop walks around your car he’ll definitely see it from that angle.
Cameras still see you, your car and what you are doing..🤷♂️🤦♀️🤷🏾♀️
What about a hinge hidden behind the plate at the bottom and a hidden pull cable like off a bicycle brake going to the drivers position. Pull when required then return. Plate flips down, can't be read. Then flip it back.
I may be mistaken but I think Florida has a thousand dollar fine for deliberately obscuring your license plate.
True
Yes, but you they will have to catch you first. Also he is technically not obscuring anything, The license plate is still visible to the naked eye.
If a cop notices that, and they will, you're getting pulled over to say the least.
If the stripes would be horizontal it wouldn’t be visible from straight angle either
You can actually make yourself invisible to security cam by wearing some sort of pattern shirt, too !
that defeats the whole point might as well just remove the plate
Make sure you put it on correct. Only one side will blur it out.
"Educational purposes" my actions say otherwise 😂
You will get a ticket for using this.
Only criminals need to do this.
Cops with lifted truck be like: COME HERE BOIIII
May be put the lense in peices so deflect I on is up down instead side to side. Updown would block cameras from higher up and not be noticable at same level right and left when in another vehicle
Get one of those glass panes that turn opaque and set it to a switch. You'll have to know where the cameras are though. Don't do this of course lol.
WHAT LENSE ?
And getting caught with this on your car is illegal.
How do you keep those buckets attached?
When a cop sees it you'll get a expensive ticket.
yeah, when he sees it.
I hate tolls but it is what it is.
thats if the cop pulls you over(run from the police)
@@egreen5217that’s great advice. Can’t wait to see you on the news.
$75 is cheaper than a traffic ticket mailed to you.
Y’all are seriously annoying. Stfu. All yall do is whistle blow and complain. Don’t put it on your car. Simple.
Who knew.
Incredible, I learned a lot from this educational video!

I simply don't trust the site you linked to buy these. Is there somewhere else I can get one?
People in Philly just take the plate completely off, smfh
My brother n law has been riding around without plates for decades. When he gets pulled over he just apologizes, says it fell off and just purchased new screws last week. Usually the cop just makes him put the plate on right then & there. He gets a new vehicle every few years so it’s unlikely the same cop will stop him in the same vehicle.
Selling point…. Have a new unopened bag of the mounting hardware in the vehicle. Install plate 👍
Where can the fresnel lens be purchased?
Would this work on a motorcycle
Even if it blocks the camera from taking a photo of the license plate, but still takes a photo of the windshield with the registration and inspection 🧐, so what’s the use of having this plastic blocking the cameras.
Here in Alberta people simply use rear mounted bicycle hangers to obliterate the license plate and seem to get away with it, and the stupid thing is that in Alberta only one rear plate is required!
Now add them all together into the ultimate licenceplate blocker
In Florida they impound your car and a 30 day hold
hit send before i finished. the thing about digital cameras is they have a serious problem, they see infrared and ultraviolet where film cameras dont without special filters to do so. what a person needs to do is blind the camera. it takes some engineering but if you can incorporate a very strong emitter that can broadcast a strong infrared signal, this is what the camera will see, a bright flash thats invisible to the naked eye but a warning, it will be visible to a patrol cars dash cam which will likely get you pulled over if noticed.
I’ll just do what my neighbor, and others, have done. Drive around with temporary plates for a year, never bothering to get the car registered. It’s amazing how many I see every day, I guess that’s not a priority for the local police department to enforce.
The po-po would definitely pull you over if they saw such a plate. They could tell by not being able to see from an angle.
Those are cool however in our area their illegal. Something to do with obstructing view especially with some are yellowing.
When you see old digital TVs on the curb they have Fresnel lenses in them
