    Great tutorial! I have just subscribed to your channel today.
    This man has audible voice and explains the tutorial so well. In this tutorial, he did not just dive into the channels. He even explained what a channel is like when dark turns to black. On the other hand, when he used a dodge tool with range selection of shadow, he even showed that it will only affect the dark areas and not the white/highlights.
    You have explained it so well. It was easy for me to follow along. I'll be checking your site, too. Really, great job!

    I've been having a hard time cutting out dark hair with busy backgrounds and this is exactly what I Needed! So many use blondes for tutorials and not dark hair so I can't figure out how to mask with dark colors on dark backgrounds. Thanks

  • @PhotoshopTrainingChannel
    @PhotoshopTrainingChannel  11 лет назад

    Yup, it is. as a photographer, compositor, or artist, you should always try to make your life easy. Why use a busy background if your going to mask hair. Think of green screen in movies. They make it easy for the artist to "key out" the actor by using a solid color.

    Hello Jésus, this is the best tutorial I have seen so far. However, even if you're using photoshop cc, you can still get to the old refine mask command. To do that, go to select and scroll down to select and masks workspace, then, hold down shift(option) key and click on select and mask. You will see refine mask. Hope this helps.

    first get all your images in one document (you can go to File > Place). Then add a layer masks one at a time to all the layers. remember, if you paint with black on the pixels it will hide them, if you paint with white, it will reveal them. Just paint way what you dont need and use the move tool to move around your layer and place it where you want it. Hope this helps!

  • @PhotoshopTrainingChannel
    @PhotoshopTrainingChannel  10 лет назад

    Kent, It all depends on your image, but if it's a clump that it's not necessary, just mask it all out! you don't need to keep all the original hair. Most pros never do! Also, try painting it brown, like I did in the video, that might help. Good luck!

    While I do appreciate your time investment in creating this tutorial, why do all you tutorial folks, on this particular subject, anyway, always use solid color backgrounds? It makes no sense to teach something that doesn't have real-world value, at least for those who have no control over the original image's background. Show us how to remove complex, multi-colored backgrounds where the subject is a woman wearing complex, multi-colored clothes that are similar in color to the background colors.

    • @PhotoshopTrainingChannel
      @PhotoshopTrainingChannel  8 лет назад +28

      George, Thank you for your comment. Professionals compositers shoot their subjects in a plain background because it's easier to mask of course. Much like movie directors use greenscreen to make their actors easier to mask and place them in other backgrounds. "Real-world" compositers do shot their models in plain backgrounds, that is why every single professional who makes tutorials uses solid backgrounds in their tutorials. It's an industry standard.
      Of course there are times when you have to mask a subject from a busy background. That is not the norm, but when you do have the project, then you have to realize that there would be a lot of things that you simply cannot mask, and will have to be left out.
      You may even have to split the image into pieces to mask different areas individually. The reason that you don't see tutorials like this is because it would be so specific to each image that it wouldn't work for yours. The techniques that solid background tutorials show, are the same that you would use on a busy background, but of course, you would have a lot more limitations, and you would have to disregard more content.

    • @dafringe
      @dafringe 8 лет назад +17

      Yes, I realize the value of shooting with a solid color background and appreciate why it's done that way. My frustrations are just boiling over in that I am forced to learn this technique on an image that is not conducive to learning. I may just have to use the entire image and feather the edges, which won't look near as good as removing the background. Thanks for the tutorial, though, and for taking the time to respond.

    • @omarandstuff
      @omarandstuff 7 лет назад +2

      Thanks to this tutorial I've learned how to use channels to my favor, how to using "levels" so I can quickly left out as black levels below the desired, thanks to this i just learned how can I work around my image so I can give contrast between what I'll mask and what I'll left out, I pretty much thanks to this have achieved what you want George just it will take some more time and creativity.

  • @soh-lofi
    @soh-lofi 9 лет назад +1

    I would NOT GO in depth about the criticism of working on the image with busy backgrounds. As long as your a professional or amateur designer this has to be your routine to get things done in the most easiest way possible by usage of "High Quality Stock Images". PTS You have wrapped a pretty good tutorial and i have learnt a small but a pretty helpful technique of achieving the complex area of hair. Thankyou! Subscribed to your channel & looking forward to see some more tutorials from you. :)

    blacklistnr1, Yes! great catch on 9:55! you do have to lock the pixels! I had it on my notes and forgot to mention it! As you probably saw, I sort of messed up on that part, with the mask, and what layer to pain on.
    And as for the layer and painting over her, the reason I left it on top is that the hair may have some color remaining from the original background, and painting over it will hide it.

    This is an amazing video and I really appreciate you creating and publishing this tutorial. There is no "easy way to mask hair--until you learn." That said, the two methods for masking were simple and easy to follow. Then the final tip on using photo filters to draw the image together really went over the top. Thank you!

  • @rogerbeltz2370
    @rogerbeltz2370 8 лет назад +9

    Yea, it's always much simpler to mask out hair when you have an image with a solid neutral background (in this case, a neutral grey) but try this on the reverse background used in the tutorial.......... a whole different story!

    • @PhotoshopTrainingChannel
      @PhotoshopTrainingChannel  8 лет назад

      Yup. That is why people who do professional composites shoot their subjects in a plain background. Much like movie directors use greenscreen. It makes it easier to mask.

    • @rogerbeltz2370
      @rogerbeltz2370 8 лет назад

      Then why don't you make this fact clear to viewers right from the start?

    • @PhotoshopTrainingChannel
      @PhotoshopTrainingChannel  8 лет назад +4

      Roger, this is an "Advance" video. It's in the title, the first word. If you don't know this basic fact, then you are not advanced. In advanced videos, a lot of things are assumed that the audience knows. This is one of those things.

    • @triciag5324
      @triciag5324 7 лет назад

      So does it mean that this tutorial will only work on a plain background and with dark hair? It should be mentionned at the beginning of the video if so. I am in no way a beginner in photoshop and to me "advanced" would mean being able to extract this kind of hair regardless of color on a busy background too.

    • @anaskaadan7846
      @anaskaadan7846 7 лет назад +3

      You guys are so unappreciative lol. It was pretty obvious from the start of the video that he's using dark hair on a grey background. Extracting hair from a complex background is a nightmare and there is no easy way to do it. Same with light hair on a light background.
      If you don't have contrast between the subject and the background, this technique won't be very useful but the stuff he taught in this video is very helpful and everyone who uses photoshop should know!

      Qldroarfan94 I would be the same tutorial. you would only see me spend A LOT more time doing more of the same. Maybe break it down and segment it into different masks. And if the background is too complex I wouldn't bother with really fine hair, or areas with low contrast. Something that might be different is that I would probably draw in some hair, either by hand, from another picture, or with a brush.

    Awesome tutorial, but for someone who isn't quite as familiar with the keyboard shortcuts, and a windows user, you lost me at 6:40 when you said click control command to make a selection.....That is the biggest hurdle I find with the online tutorials, is that most teachers forget that us newbies are not used to the shortcuts yet! Thanks for the great tutorial. I'm a fan and a subscriber to your channel.
    I have one question/suggestion. When you add the additional layer to beef up the finer strands of hair (14:30), why do you leave it on top of everything else? When I add a strengthening layer I put it *under* the layers with the "real" image data. That way the correct color will always show on top. Also, I can easily sample the photo's hair color and then draw that color right in the same place on the lower "beef-up" layer, ensuring a good color match.

    • @PhotoshopTrainingChannel
      @PhotoshopTrainingChannel  9 лет назад +1

      Darrell Myers yup, that works as well. Actually, I have a video where I use this same photo in a live presentation, and I add the layer under as you described.
