When working with the alpha channel, you can also use the brush tool with the brush set to a contrast blend mode like "Overlay". That will darken blacks or lighten whites really nicely, depending on which foreground color you use, without causing problems on the other end of the tonal scale. Also, the "Select Color Range" option can be helpful as an alternative to blend-if.
After watching complex explanations on other photoshop "tutorials", I always go back to your channel to verify it in the most simple way possible. Yours always work. thanks

Yes, this technique works great when you have a perfectly blue sky and nothing else in the photo is blue. I've tried this technique with other photos and it didn't work well.
Actually the technique works regardless of how much of the blue exists in your photo - just add a mask to a duplicate layer as stated. GotGame: Do you all really want him to waste his resources to make a 10 second video? Because that's all it would require and would be an extreme waste of time.

Don't bother with any other Photoshop channel. This is the best of the best. Jesus makes all his tuts so easy to follow. These techniques may not work for every photos but the ones it does make selections easy. Contrast between the background and foreground is key. This contrast can be by colour or luminosity.
The blend if just blew my mind .. I have been doing it all wrong lol. I Just found this video searching through tons of tutorials to explain these tips on cutting out complicated images and I must say I am very impressed!. Great tutorial. I've been learning about advanced selection techniques for a while and have used the 'blend if' technique but had no idea about the results you get when you convert the layer to a smart object. This was a gold nugget for me. Thanks. Hope you make more tutorials like this one.

I just moved up to this latest Photoshop from a long time with CS-3. I never felt I needed the more advanced tools for my style of work. This stuff is way over my head. I am Subscribed but I will have to look for your videos that will ease me in. Good work. I think if I copy your videos into VLC Media Player I should record them to pause more easily and access them better.

There is a color selection tool as well so you can select everything with certain colors. learned that as well after using manual selection ;)

You can use two layers. So duplicate the layer and then use one layer to bring back the blue areas that you want with a mask.

You pick up an easy photo, do the same trick with complex photos then i will admit your are an editor

Use it in situations that work. There is no one size fits all in editing. Give the man some credit.
