My colour range option is grey which means I cannot select it

You should be able to see the shadow option in the "select" drop down menu which creates selection to all black areas. Make sure to click the original image layer first and not the adjustments.

Honestly, I am finding that no Photoshop tool is working for this. I have animals in the snow, and I cannot get it right....
