    Hi, guys with South Bend lathes seem to really be loving their lathe, yours is very nicely restored and maintained.
    Metric is in town, mainly with cars now.
    Thanks, Pierre

    I understand now what you are saying about using pins to space the bushing after thinking about it. I have to make up completely new pieces to fit my compound screw/cross feed screw and the New Era Dials. Pins would hold it true compared to the 2 screws. Maybe if there were 4 screws it would be better but that's probably overkill. I have a different method I'm going to try since I have to make my own pieces anyway. The details of what you do machining is a big help.

    I can totally relate to the "eye's going" thing... for me was 43. eyes gone over night. like it's always too dim and blurry. Sucks when you need them for detail work.

    The dial looks to be smooth, you did great work on it it might also be that the new/old stock was made to great quality standards as well? You display great preparation before starting the actual work, it appears to be a rare form of patients these days. As vintage micro machinists (metric machines and tools) we rebuild or refurbish as needed our machines ourselves, and I cannot tell you how having a lot of new/old stock and stock we bought along the way for the past several decades came in handy for us anyways. We are new to your channel and you make really easy to follow videos, thank you for that.

    I wish you had a video for how you did the cross feed, I bought a set of New Era Dials yesterday. They are for another type lathe but I was assured that all I had to do is is make new adapters for the SB 13". I don't know if there are prints or just copies of what's needed for putting on a SB. I'm going to try and make them work from what I saw you do with the compound. If it looks like I'm going to screw them up I'll sell them off, too difficult to come by and very pricey. Thanks for doing half of it anyway. Big Help

    • @BasementShopGuy
      @BasementShopGuy  4 года назад

      Both were pretty similar. One thing though, make sure you find a way to space the bushing out - equally. I think I used pins.

    • @paulgreenlee190
      @paulgreenlee190 4 года назад

      @@BasementShopGuy I'm not sure what you are referring to but it will make more sense when I get the dials sometime today or tomorrow. I don't know if I'll have a set of prints to go by because these New Era Dials were for another brand lathe. I'm sure by watching your videos, I think you are the only machinist that actually showed the steps you went through to put the dials on. Your video on making a new compound screw encouraged me to order the stock and make one for my lathe. I'm dealing with some chatter unless I use my tail stock. I was using carbide inserts but don't know the parameters, so HSS is what I'm going back to. Just got a notification on a new video from you so it takes priority, I want to see a turret lathe in action. Thank you for all the time and work you do to help the Hobbyist learn and grow having fun with a lathe

    Really nice job and great upgrade to the lathe. Good trick making the collar and milling the 1/8" hole for the 1/8" pin. I was concerned that 1/2 the material to be drilled out would be steel and the other 1/2 aluminum that the bit would "walk" into the aluminum side... Nice recovery.... Fred

    • @BasementShopGuy
      @BasementShopGuy  9 лет назад

      Fred - yeah, it worked even better on the Cross-Feed dials. The more difficult part was drilling the screw-extender to dimple it so the grub screws can bit in. That, you had to be real careful as the bit could walk all over the place. Glad you liked the video, too!

    Pretty amazing little job of mechanical engineering getting those planetary gears to mesh in such a precise fashion to render to reading for an equal distance. I now see that I wouldn't need anything so fine for my use...have you ever thought about selling your original dials, or even leasing them until I can make a simple set? PM me if you want to talk turkey ;) Those originals look epic compared to my micrometer thimble sized dials, LOL! Thanks for the great video, Aloha...Chuck

    Basement Shop Guy. Great video. Good looking dials. These will make life easier. Also I was very impressed with you cinematography . Your camera skills match your machining skills. Good video, excellent camera work.
    What kind of camera were you using. Some guys on You Tube have good videos but the camera work is very much lacking, yours was spot on. Like the dials. Thumbs up.

      Hi Ron - the camera is a Canon Vixia HF M50. It's a pretty nice camera, especially in low light, which is important in the basement. And yeah, I've been watching a lot of videos and trying to do the things that I myself would like to see. Thanks for the kind words, I'll keep em coming.

    Brad...quite nice, I like the dual dials. Do you have the metric change gears set up--you must keep Ted in business. Also, I noticed your mill and tail stock chucks, have you gone to all none key units. I need to get a hold of Steve W. and get some acme rod for the compound on my 10L. I will also put a large dial on it while I am at it. I rebuilt the cross slide completely with a big dial before.
    Hope the family is well, I am glad to see that you aren't employing forced child labor in the shop any longer...maybe because all the dirty jobs are completed, HA! Happy New Year to you my friend. Keep making big things little with all them'thar machines and be safe. Eric

      @BasementShopGuy  9 лет назад

      Hey Erik. Great to hear from you. Yeah all keyless chucks for me. Not really a decision but I just found 2 deals on nice Albrechts and couldn't pass up. The shop has grown since we last spoke (check out the videos). Take some pics or video of the screw rebuild - always love to see that kind of stuff. Hope all is well with you too!

    Hey Brad,
    Pretty impressive! I too have a Heavy Ten like yours with a shit load of tooling! Mine was built in the late thirties and has the tag stating it was built for the war effort. Being former Navy Seabee, kinda special to me!
    I would like to do a dial upgrade as well. Did I understand you correctly that the ones you installed are no longer available?
    And what kind of setup do you have on the spindle to hold the chuck? Looks kinda odd.. Do you not have the 2 1/4x 8 thread mount?
    Regardless, looks beautiful, and sounds pretty good.
    Nice job on the upgrade!!
    Razor!

    • @BasementShopGuy
      @BasementShopGuy  9 лет назад +1

      Razor,
      Yeah those dials are no longer available *(to my knowledge). Was lucky to find them. My spindle (was) a threaded spindle, until I found an NOS D1-4 cam-lock spindle. I machined the check backplate as well. Now THAT'S a video I should have made. *shakes head in dissapointment*

  • @b3nsb3nz
    @b3nsb3nz 9 лет назад

    I have the same lathe, but yours is almost too pretty to use, great job on the restoration. I part off with it high speed all the time, I have found much more success when using power feed and parting, it keeps the tool pressure more consistent than feeding by hand and seems to work just fine.
    Did your lathe come with that cam lever for the feed, or did you make\buy one? I have that dang star knob thing and its annoying.
    Thanks for sharing.

    • @BasementShopGuy
      @BasementShopGuy  9 лет назад

      It (did) come with the clutch toggle-knob. However, it (didn't) come with the cam-lock spindle. I bought that (NOS) and machined the cam-lock backing plate that holds my 3-jaw. I'll have to experiment with the parting because I see so many others doing it, that it makes me think that something isn't adjusted quite right. Thanks for the info, I'll possibly make a video on it?

    Hi,
    I just picked up a 1`3" South Bend this week. It is a Turret model. I got it for a good price. I enjoyed watching your videos. My Lathe is in the garage and I am taking it apart to bring it to the basement. I can't seem to figure out how to take the belt off. My other lathe you took the pulley off but on this it seems like it goes through the bed? The Belt is in great condition. I figured if anyone would know how to take it off it would be you. Does it get spliced?
    TY
    Charlie

    • @BasementShopGuy
      @BasementShopGuy  9 лет назад

      Thanks Charlie. My belt (does) have the clips and connecting pin, so I just pull the pin and the belt separates. If yours is a serpentine belt, you can remove the spindle to free belt, but it still remains in the bed, so unfortunately, you'll have to cut it. Let me know how you make out ;)

    • @keys4692
      @keys4692 9 лет назад

      BasementShopGuy TY for your response. My belt is thin. Can I put clips on mine.?
      TY
      Charlie

    • @BasementShopGuy
      @BasementShopGuy  9 лет назад

      Yeah. You'll need the clips and the tool to do it. Search TubalCain's video on lacing a belt. Real good info on the process and tool.

    • @keys4692
      @keys4692 9 лет назад

      BasementShopGuy Well I cut it. First I tried to put acetone where the slit was. It didn't work so I cut it. LOL Yeah I saw that about lacing when I did my other lathe. I ended up threading it with the SB trim your lathe method. This belt is to thin to do that to. Guess I will get a new belt when I am finished.

      Keld - Ahh, the dutchman pin.... *sighs* It was tricky. Fortunately on the cross-slide, I found a way to master it by putting the ball crank on the screw, then pulling it out a little to act as a drill-guide. Worked perfect and came out clean and snug. Thanks for watching!
