Man, I have seen a lot of Lathe Restoration Videos, and I mean A LOT. I have probably watched 250 - 300 of them in the last couple of years, and I have seen some damn good ones, and some not so good ones, but you take the cake Brother. I've watched 3 of your Southbend Restorations just today, and I've never seen anyone do as good of a job as you. These probably look quite a bit better than they did the day that they rolled out the Factory Door. I would bet money that they weren't polished anywhere to the extent that you have done them. My Hats off to you. I know if I ever get ready to restore an old piece of Equipment/Machine that you will be the person I will be seeking advice from. I'm getting ready to purchase a PM-1640 TL just like yours, but man I would love to have one of these old Lathes also some day in this kind of condition. Maybe a Hardinge Toolroom Model, or a Southbend. These are absolutely beautiful. I've been following you on IG for a while now, and we've had a few conversations about Lathes, but I really just started watching your Tube channel today. Been "binge watching" all day. I used to “buff” die cast for chrome plating back in 76, that’s gravy compared to steel, brass, etc. Went home dirty every day ! Your attention to detail makes this SB a museum piece. Yet accurate and ready to go to work ! You’ve done a very nice job ❤️👍

I trained to be a machinist in high school ( Boston technical high class of 1964) the south bend lathe is a mechanical work of art ! after I graduated I got a position as an instructor's assistant for the next school year. I was responsible for all the machinesin the shop. It was one of the best times of my life ! I really enjoyed your video & would like to get one of these beauties of my own

The best lathe I ever ran was a South Bend. Somewhat larger and more modern. Probably a 1970s product. It was a 17 inch "Turnado". Had everything, Dunmore toolpost grinder, taper attachment, steady and follower rests, quick change tool post block, Bausch & Lomb digital readout with presets, 3 jaw cam lock Chuck with hard and soft Jaws, 4 jaw, coolant, metric thread cutting gear, cone center, live center. That's all I remember for now. I ran it every day for many years. 40 hrs a week anyway. I loved and respected that machine. Good times.
This kind of restoration is a work of art. It takes a lot of courage just to begin a project like this. Very good documentation and beautiful work. Thank you for undertaking this and sharing it.
DucDucSTFU Thanks! Yeah the 13" is a staple in plenty of shops and most schools. I got lucky with this one. But I only buy a machine that has great potential. I'd rather pay up front for a mechanically-sound machine, rather than track parts down or pay to have things re-conditioned.
Wow! You did an impressive job on restaurating that Southbend! I can imagine it took a lot of patience to remove all the old paint, rust and grease to make shure the new paint won't fall off after two months ;-) You converted a workhorse to a jewel - Congrats!

I'm in the process of overhauling my 1942 SB 13". It's long over due and I'm doing it to keep it operational not for a beautiful resto-job. It amazes me how much effort went in to the production of these machines. The new ones are just cast boxes. I'm not pulling the bed off the base, I'll clean it in place. My taper jig is missing and I think the tail stock is too far out to save. But I make bicycles with this machine and It has served me well over the past 12-years.

It looks great! Doesn’t look like you did any scraping... good if you didn’t have to. I recently got a lathe just like yours, only from late 70’s. It needs a lot of scraping. I’m about to start a video series on that. Cheers.
I reckon if the South Bend Company was looking to contact someone to “restore” one for their showroom ......... you’d be the Man Very nicely done right down to the oil caps and the finish on the brass too. Great idea on the oilers too
Wow this is some beautiful work and great attention to detail. Love every bit of it. And she turned out gorgeous. I bet she's a pleasure to work on. I've just started a restoration on a 1939 colchester master 6 inch lathe. She's in terrible condition and was very un loved. But have a long long way to go. But after watching your video it gives me confidence to make my lathe hopefully just as nice. But am not looking forward to the headstock removal and all those gears. Love what you done with all the buffing and polishing . Must of taken some hours to get high polished surfaces like that. Can I ask did you do anything before the buffing . Hey Brad, Abom79 sent me here, I absolutely love your restoration of this lathe. I'm new to the whole machining interest and in fact I've never even see a lathe in person, but I somehow stumbled onto Abom's youtube page and now I'm half way through the Saturday Night Special series, and that was after I watched like 20 of his other videos before discovering the SNS. Anyway, I'll have to subscribe and check out some of your other videos. Man I think I missed my calling. I mean don't get me wrong, I love being an electrician and Maintenance Mechanic for the University of Washington, but this stuff is fascinating!!!

ToolGuy Patients Tool guy. You'll get there ;) I've been through that with three South Bend lathes, a Bridgeport, SB drill press and now a SB grinder as well as my new surface grinder.
I strip the paint with mr. muscle oven cleaner. Derusting is either submerging (large) parts into a tank of molasses or for smaller stuff, evaporust. And c'mon, is there ANY other better color than South-Bend-Gray? LOL
The Grey or Gray is a wonderful color......I am finding my bed [under neath] and other areas are painted tan, and it sure does not look like a repaint job....my machine is from 1939 , an 8113 C......just bought and wanting to get in tip top shape, I am very surprised at the .003 run out on the Victoria [England] 3 jaw chuck......makes me happy.....and very little wear on ways near headstock.......Best Wishes, Paul down in Central Florida......
Hi mate. This one looked to be in a slightly better condition than the other two. However this one had more parts it seems. After all that work, do you have a problem using it? I don't know if you have thought about it, but soda blasting might be cheaper and quicker than the old nasty burning paint remover. It does not work on rust though. Do you re-chrome stuff, or is it all polished? Anyway, an other great project. Well done!!!!!!!! Kind regards, Marcel.
Wow I've driven by where this machine came from like a million times. It's off the southern Parkway exit for my home town. Apparently there's an E&S auto care place where it came from now. The next time I drive by I'll be sure to look over that way. Too funny!
Don, this paint was matched by a Benjamin Moore dealer in PA. I brought the end-gear cover and he matched it by eye. Then dialed in the perfect shade. See the different paint-blots as they go around the original sample in the video. The paint is Alkyd Enamel. I just googled this: "benjamin moore alkyd" and lots of hits. This was the paint I used on my Heavy-10 (video as well). Also suggest a membership on the forum I listed. Very helpful. Keep me posted.
I sure wish I could (had the talent) restore my 1950's SB 14" tool room lathe to look like this! Yours is truly beautiful to see looking like new- That was my plan when I bought it but as everyone knows life has a tendency to get in the way sometimes

I have a 1960 South Bend 13" x 72" Lathe. I'm too old to ever learn the steps and methods of making mine look so good. All the extra work you did paid off big time. Your lathe is a show piece, I have watched this video several times and always learn something by doing so. Could you please tell me when you painted the lines on the graduated dials how you removed the paint without disturbing the satin finish on the dials? Did you redo the satin finish on the graduated dials when restoring the Lathe? I understand that South Bend subbed the Graduated Dials out to a contractor, it was some type of "Vapor" process. I'm not sure if an amateur, me, could do this process at home. Thank you for a great video.
To mark the witness marks, you have to paint the dial black. Let it sit for a while, then use thinner on a rag. Wipe off with a flat object, which will leave the paint in the grooves. That satin finish it pretty durable. They call it "pickled" and yes, I believe it was a vapor process.

I sprayed some quick drying black spray paint, then immediately, wiped it off with a t-shirt. Keep wiping, while keeping your finger stiff, to not push into the witness marks. There will be some residue. Once dry, you can then use a rag with mineral spirits to remove the haze - again, keeping your finger straight. Hope this helps...
Nice job,, l love to buy and restore vintage tools also,,, have a 12 inch atlas myself, not the quality of south bend except for it has timkin bearings, I sanded and polished all the metals no paint,,looks cool,,, just picked up 2 - 6 inch lathes,, a 109 and 101 both for 400, and yesterday a Rockwell wood lathe, I'm lathe obsessed now,,,
I've watched hours of these restoration videos. Two stand out. A Brazilian video of the restoration of a large air compressor. The man actually has to make tools to work on it. A little better than that, the 13" South Bend Lathe. For craftsmanship, attention to detail, vision, patients you have to give it to BasementShopGuy. Note: With the South Bend Milling Machine, it's a match set. How do you acquire skills like this?

Brad, great video, watched it again for the 3rd or 4th time. I have a 1960 South Bend 13". The rear bushing/bearing locked up. I removed the Spindle, mine has 3 step pulleys not 4. The Capillary Spring Loaded Oiler was destroyed, no way oil could get to the needed points. The rear Oil Tube, Part Number PT255TH2 is flush to the bearing surface not like the front that is above flush to fit inside the bushing/bearing. I think who ever put the rear cap on didn't line it up and the hole in the bottom of the bushing/bearing to fit over the tube and the result pushed it down flush. Do you have any suggestions on how to pull it back up in the correct position? Is there any way to reach it from the underside of the housing? Why would South Bend offer a part number if you couldn't get it out. Maybe it is not usable after it is removed, I don't know but you might have an idea that would help me correct it. Thanks
Very nice restoration Brad. One thing to keep in mind it is not advisable to solder high power wire because if some how the circuit gets hot the solder is the first one to give and wire will get loose springing uncontrollable. This is a double safe method. After the primer coat do you know that kind of putty they used originally? Radu
Hey Brad, where did you get the new south bend name plate stuff, I am restoring a 10L and it is missing the lubrication chart. This is my first restore so I am wondering where to find a few things. Do you happen to know if Grizzly has the QCG plates, lube chart plate etc.
I would love to do the same thing once I get a larger shop. I'm wondering though--did you send the bed out for refurbishing? I've read that re-grinding those flame-hardened beds gets really expensive pretty quickly...and then there's the scraping or grinding of the saddle and tailstock that goes along with that as well. Wonderful restoration though--just beautiful!

I checked with a Benjamin Moore dealer and they never heard of the Alkyd or could not order it. The paint codes will not work in their system they said the paint was mixed that way over a year and a half ago. Ace hardware is the Benjamin Moore dealer in my area. How much was sprayed and how much brushed? You do GREAT quality work that lathe never looked that good straight from the factory.What type of paint store did you buy from? Thank you

Thanks for the paint info. located it in Cincinnati. I also seen the paint info in the video. For the amounts of tint to add was this for ( 1 ) gallon or ( 1 ) quart. I know you mentioned purchasing a gallon and having it divided into quarts. This would be very helpful this paint is expensive per quart but quality cost. Thank you.
i have a 16" south bend lathe . my back gear lever kicks out when turning counter clockwise . is there an ajustment ? our am i doing something wrong ? thank you Jim
Beautiful work, Brad! A couple of questions: It looks like the lathe started out with a threaded spindle nose and then later had a D1-4 nose. What's the story on that, did you replace the spindle? I ask because I have a Heavy 10 and I'd like to retrofit a D1-4 spindle myself. Where did you find the replacement? The other question is, is there a write-up on the 'half-nut oil hole mod' that you did? Is this a problem that's common to Heavy 10's? Thanks for any info, and for the great videos!
Yup, she was a threaded spindle and I found an NOS cam-lock on eBay and jumped on it. There is a link in the description to the entire build thread and I believe some details on the half-nut mod is there. Glad you enjoyed the vidz!!

Hey Brad, Abom79 sent me here, I absolutely love your restoration of this lathe. I'm new to the whole machining interest and in fact I've never even see a lathe in person, but I somehow stumbled onto Abom's youtube page and now I'm half way through the Saturday Night Special series, and that was after I watched like 20 of his other videos before discovering the SNS. Anyway, I'll have to subscribe and check out some of your other videos. Man I think I missed my calling. I mean don't get me wrong, I love being an electrician and Maintenance Mechanic for the University of Washington, but this stuff is fascinating!!!

ToolGuy Patients Tool guy. You'll get there ;) I've been through that with three South Bend lathes, a Bridgeport, SB drill press and now a SB grinder as well as my new surface grinder.

I strip the paint with mr. muscle oven cleaner. Derusting is either submerging (large) parts into a tank of molasses or for smaller stuff, evaporust. And c'mon, is there ANY other better color than South-Bend-Gray? LOL
The Grey or Gray is a wonderful color......I am finding my bed [under neath] and other areas are painted tan, and it sure does not look like a repaint job....my machine is from 1939 , an 8113 C......just bought and wanting to get in tip top shape, I am very surprised at the .003 run out on the Victoria [England] 3 jaw chuck......makes me happy.....and very little wear on ways near headstock.......Best Wishes, Paul down in Central Florida......

This one looked to be in a slightly better condition than the other two. However this one had more parts it seems. After all that work, do you have a problem using it? I don't know if you have thought about it, but soda blasting might be cheaper and quicker than the old nasty burning paint remover. It does not work on rust though. Do you re-chrome stuff, or is it all polished?
Anyway, an other great project. Well done!!!!!!!!

Wow I've driven by where this machine came from like a million times. It's off the southern Parkway exit for my home town. Apparently there's an E&S auto care place where it came from now. The next time I drive by I'll be sure to look over that way. Too funny!
Don, this paint was matched by a Benjamin Moore dealer in PA. I brought the end-gear cover and he matched it by eye. Then dialed in the perfect shade. See the different paint-blots as they go around the original sample in the video. The paint is Alkyd Enamel. I just googled this: "benjamin moore alkyd" and lots of hits. This was the paint I used on my Heavy-10 (video as well). Also suggest a membership on the forum I listed. Very helpful. Keep me posted.

I have a 1960 South Bend 13" x 72" Lathe. I'm too old to ever learn the steps and methods of making mine look so good. All the extra work you did paid off big time. Your lathe is a show piece, I have watched this video several times and always learn something by doing so. Could you please tell me when you painted the lines on the graduated dials how you removed the paint without disturbing the satin finish on the dials? Did you redo the satin finish on the graduated dials when restoring the Lathe? I understand that South Bend subbed the Graduated Dials out to a contractor, it was some type of "Vapor" process. I'm not sure if an amateur, me, could do this process at home. Thank you for a great video.
To mark the witness marks, you have to paint the dial black. Let it sit for a while, then use thinner on a rag. Wipe off with a flat object, which will leave the paint in the grooves. That satin finish it pretty durable. They call it "pickled" and yes, I believe it was a vapor process.

I sprayed some quick drying black spray paint, then immediately, wiped it off with a t-shirt. Keep wiping, while keeping your finger stiff, to not push into the witness marks. There will be some residue. Once dry, you can then use a rag with mineral spirits to remove the haze - again, keeping your finger straight. Hope this helps...
Nice job,, l love to buy and restore vintage tools also,,, have a 12 inch atlas myself, not the quality of south bend except for it has timkin bearings, I sanded and polished all the metals no paint,,looks cool,,, just picked up 2 - 6 inch lathes,, a 109 and 101 both for 400, and yesterday a Rockwell wood lathe, I'm lathe obsessed now,,,
I've watched hours of these restoration videos. Two stand out. A Brazilian video of the restoration of a large air compressor. The man actually has to make tools to work on it. A little better than that, the 13" South Bend Lathe. For craftsmanship, attention to detail, vision, patients you have to give it to BasementShopGuy. Note: With the South Bend Milling Machine, it's a match set. How do you acquire skills like this?

Brad, great video, watched it again for the 3rd or 4th time. I have a 1960 South Bend 13". The rear bushing/bearing locked up. I removed the Spindle, mine has 3 step pulleys not 4. The Capillary Spring Loaded Oiler was destroyed, no way oil could get to the needed points. The rear Oil Tube, Part Number PT255TH2 is flush to the bearing surface not like the front that is above flush to fit inside the bushing/bearing. I think who ever put the rear cap on didn't line it up and the hole in the bottom of the bushing/bearing to fit over the tube and the result pushed it down flush. Do you have any suggestions on how to pull it back up in the correct position? Is there any way to reach it from the underside of the housing? Why would South Bend offer a part number if you couldn't get it out. Maybe it is not usable after it is removed, I don't know but you might have an idea that would help me correct it. Thanks

Very nice restoration Brad. One thing to keep in mind it is not advisable to solder high power wire because if some how the circuit gets hot the solder is the first one to give and wire will get loose springing uncontrollable. This is a double safe method.
After the primer coat do you know that kind of putty they used originally?

Hey Brad, where did you get the new south bend name plate stuff, I am restoring a 10L and it is missing the lubrication chart. This is my first restore so I am wondering where to find a few things. Do you happen to know if Grizzly has the QCG plates, lube chart plate etc.

I would love to do the same thing once I get a larger shop. I'm wondering though--did you send the bed out for refurbishing? I've read that re-grinding those flame-hardened beds gets really expensive pretty quickly...and then there's the scraping or grinding of the saddle and tailstock that goes along with that as well.

I checked with a Benjamin Moore dealer and they never heard of the Alkyd or could not order it. The paint codes will not work in their system they said the paint was mixed that way over a year and a half ago. Ace hardware is the Benjamin Moore dealer in my area. How much was sprayed and how much brushed? You do GREAT quality work that lathe never looked that good straight from the factory.What type of paint store did you buy from? Thank you

Thanks for the paint info. located it in Cincinnati. I also seen the paint info in the video. For the amounts of tint to add was this for ( 1 ) gallon or ( 1 ) quart. I know you mentioned purchasing a gallon and having it divided into quarts. This would be very helpful this paint is expensive per quart but quality cost. Thank you.
i have a 16" south bend lathe . my back gear lever kicks out when turning counter clockwise . is there an ajustment ? our am i doing something wrong ? thank you Jim
Beautiful work, Brad! A couple of questions: It looks like the lathe started out with a threaded spindle nose and then later had a D1-4 nose. What's the story on that, did you replace the spindle? I ask because I have a Heavy 10 and I'd like to retrofit a D1-4 spindle myself. Where did you find the replacement? The other question is, is there a write-up on the 'half-nut oil hole mod' that you did? Is this a problem that's common to Heavy 10's? Thanks for any info, and for the great videos!
Yup, she was a threaded spindle and I found an NOS cam-lock on eBay and jumped on it. There is a link in the description to the entire build thread and I believe some details on the half-nut mod is there. Glad you enjoyed the vidz!!

Hi - yes, that’s a repro gearbox tag. And the man who did it has passed away some years ago. Tom Utley is the new guy who does those tags now.
It looks great. How much of it did you end up replacing? I bet the lead screw costs a fortune new.
New, I'm not sure because you can't really get them new. I got mine NOS for about 3-4 hundred, I think. It was a few years ago.
